Customer Reviews:
Plenty of Variety.......2004-03-26
The album opens with Mr Loverman, a delightful duet between Shabba and Chevelle Franklin; this is a catchy number with lovely vocal interplay and a lilting beat. Pirates Anthem is a collaboration with Coca T and Home T; it's spacey, with plenty of vocal variation and rhythmic innovation. Wicked is a mid-tempo groove, whilst Woodtop is a more monotonous piece of ragga rapping. Gal Yuh Good is slowish but intriguing with some recognisable words in long reams of unintelligibility. Just Reality has a buoyant beat and innovative vocal techniques while Can Dun is more subdued with a really great drawn out percussive groove and echoing vocals. The light and breezy Ragamuffin with its swaying pop groove is one of my favorites. I prefer it when Shabba sings rather than raps. He does so again on the last song Bad & Wicked in which he ruminates on reggae, ragga and dancehall over an engaging mid-tempo beat. Rough & Ready Volume 1 is a great showcase for the talents of Shabba Ranks with its refreshing variety of styles.

Customer Reviews:
The excellence of this entire guitar masterwork is almost beyond words.......2007-06-04
It is indeed an "album" rather than a group of songs and the feeling that starts with the very first song..... is the feeling you want and that you keep while listening, and any true music lover knows how wonderful that feeling can be.....a constant when listening to this soaring, epic musical genius expression. The eclectic chemistry of this band creates a sound that is almost a rock genre of it's own. I was between college and high school and while I was not addicted to drugs I was addicted to listening to this album, VERY LOUD, every day (for longer than I might care to admit) and on headphones if at all possible, but always LOUD.....because this album has punch, crunch, nuance and beauty that just sounds better louder! Cozy Powell drove the tight rhythm section and Beck danced on and with them all musically like they had always been together. Though I agree that Bob Tench's singing didn't electrify you (like Powell, Beck and Middleton) but he was actually the perfect unexpected touch making this a blend of music that is, as I said, almost a genre of it's own.....and very listenable to both musicians and average music lovers. I'd call it perfect music if I had to name the genre right now! Still sounds fresh and I only wish my 25 year old son, who I am currently writing much about music (and life) for since I've only known hime since he was 18, had seen Beck live with me a few month's ago when it was so good that I often found myself just slightly rocking back and forth and laughing because I had to emote and I was embarrassed to cry any more tears of joy to my former pro musician bro' buddy who sat next to me. Afterward he said, "that's it. it can't get better than that" It was a concert that had it all....as heavy as anything I've ever heard but as tasty and nuanced too, with a James Brown funk thing running through it all that keep everybody happy. That's Beck today....and that is also Rough and Ready. Great lyrics for all but especially a young adult. The double-tracked guitar solo on "Situation" is so fat and meaty and has the most perfect rock tone that Beck gets with few effects....just listen as many times as you can....it is better EVERY time. It's also the only way to know what is truly not able to be said and understood simply because it's just too good!
Loud and Ready.......2007-01-31
This album sounds best played loud! Cozy Powell is excellent here and Beck is off the wall and at his wildest (he was deliriously suffering from headaches due to a recent car accident) yet his tone and playing is accurate.
A Great Comeback For Jeff Beck.......2004-12-17
ROUGH AND READY announced the return of Jeff Beck after a near-fatal car accident, and who could've thought of a better way to do it? Mixing Memphis funk with heavy metal, he adds soulful vocals from Bob Tench, who is as unique in his own way as Rod Stewart was in his. This album is a must have for both R&B AND metal fans.
Jeff Goin Thru Changes.......2004-12-07
This album show Jeff's migration from Rock to Jazz Rock/Fusion. Max Middleton works so beautifully with Jeff. Too bad Jeff let him go after Wired. You can hear Jeff's influence by Jan Hammer in the song "New Ways/Train Train". Word is Jeff changed his direction when he heard Jan on John Ambercrombie's "Timeless" album, specifically the cut "Red and Orange". Give it a listen and have bandaids ready for your ears. Jeff Beck...there is no substitute!
Crank it up with repeated listening.......2004-01-04
Well ,i dug this gem out dusted it off and cranked up the stereo. Guess what ?I really liked it !The music on this is awesome! The first song "Got the Feeling" made my wife and I think of the old "70's"cop shows like "the streets of San Fransisco". The only drawback here is the vocalist.I cant help but think this would have been a monster with a different singer.Although ,if you crank it up with repeated listening,he begins to grow on you."Raynes Park Blues" is worth the price of admission alone. Why was it retitled? It is a very beautiful and moving song.By the time you get to the song "Jody"which is another of my favorites, the vocalist begins to gel.I give this cd 4 stars, one short of classic because of the singer, but it was compelling enough to make me want to write the review. Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy it the way i did.Jeff Beck is simply amazing!

Customer Reviews:
Just dandy!.......2003-10-04
My copy of this set sounds fine--a bit bright and edgy at times but nothing to write my congressperson about. I would've preferred a richer piano sound and modern digital recording, but hey, we can't have everything, especially in this sort of repertoire. These are swell performances of astonishing piano music. In unsympathetic hands, Ives (or nearly any "modern" composer) can sound like so much noodling--not so here. Ives himself enjoyed adventurous (and even incompetent!) interpretations of his music and was hardly fussy with his notation so it's tough to call any one recording of a work "definitive." A tip: look for hell-bent enthusiasm and/or profound mysticism more than any other qualities in Ives performances. You'll find them in this set, in old (and sonically imperfect) recordings like Bernstein's for CBS (now Sony) or the Stokowski performance of Symphony #4, and in the wonderful collection of Ives playing his own music. With Ives, the "critical edition" mentality or perfectionism of any type tend to miss the man's essential aesthetic and spiritual points.
More than a bargain.......2001-07-22
I listened to this set before I looked at the review already posted here; then I went back to listen again, thinking I must have missed something. For what it's worth, I did not detect distorted recording, though there are (as often with Ives) some odd sounds coming from the piano now and then--but I think they are part of it. Mandel's performances of the big works--the two sonatas--are distinctive and powerful. I am not sure I would say he replaces John Kirkpatrick's "Concord," but he stands comfortably in that company as a fine interpreter of the work, and his Sonata #1 is possibly the best I have heard of that work. The many shorter or minor pieces are performed well, so far as I can tell. I suppose it is possible that the earlier reviewer had a defective set, or possibly my ears are just not so finely tuned. I hope, however, that the recorded sound is at least as good as it sounds to me, since I would hope that both fans and newcomers would find this a welcome addition to an Ives collection.
5 Star Performance, 0 Star Recording.......1999-10-12
This is an excellent performance by Alan Mandel who, throughout these 3 discs, shows an uncanny ability to bring out the melody from within even the most convoluted Ives' piece. Unfortunately, most of this recording is distorted and noisy when the playing gets loud. All of the Studies on CD 1 contain distortion well beyond any professional recording I've ever heard (the 2 sonatas don't suffer from the same fate -- they appear to be from a different session). The fact that Vox goes on about their 20-bit digital mastering on the back of the box sure looks like they are "protesting too much". This is all a real shame for Ives fans because Mandel's playing is some of the finest Ives piano performances I've ever heard, plus, here in one place at a great price, are arcane pieces well worth hearing. (It's almost worth getting for that reason, but, in the end, you're stuck with fine music that's distorted and noisy.)
