Magic was created one starlit night in July 1990, when Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and José Carreras met onstage at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome and became the Three Tenors. They eschewed competitive instincts and cooperated in the spirit of mutual admiration to create one of the greatest musical events ever. This concert is an awe-inspiring orgy of the greatest hits for the tenor voice. Domingo and Pavarotti sing perfectly. The audience wins as these vocal supermen compete to seduce the hearts of the audience. One moment Domingo brings thrilling fire and pain to "E lucevan le stelle" from Tosca; the next, Pavarotti rises to heavenly heights in an inspired rendition of "Nessun dorma" from Turandot. Carreras is the competent little brother, one step behind the greatness of the big brothers from opera's Ponderosa. His singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys; but his enthusiasm and passion are unrivaled. Mehta exquisitely captures the largeness of this bonanza through the grandiose orchestra. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

4 out of 5 stars delivery went ok.......2006-11-14

the item was delivered to me on-time and with no problems. however,i was looking for a DVD and not a audio Cd. might be good to clearly differentiate when the product is being advertised or shown.

5 out of 5 stars A knockout performance .......2006-05-28

Like so many of the reviewers here I am not an opera aficionado. But I sensed immediately the night I saw this concert on television that this was one of those 'remarkable' artistic events. Domingo and Pavarotti both have such strength and beauty in their voices that they overwhelm. Carreras adds flavor and enthusiasm.
One of the most remarkable music performances I have seen.

5 out of 5 stars The night that started it all!.......2005-11-02

You can read the technical information about the contents of this CD above. That is not what this review is about. I became intrested in opera about 1 1/2 years ago because of happening upon Mario Lanza. Since then, I have experienced many great truly operatic voices, including the "King," Pavarotti.
If you are just discovering opera, suffice it to say; Buy this album!!! It was the concert that launched the 3 Tenors phenomenon. It is full of uplifting, heart- tugging favorites, and you will find yourself listening to it over and over. Buy the dvd as well. It imparts absolute electricity! I am a young pianist and vocalist, and this concert is truly inspiring to me! You won't regret one penny you spend on this!

5 out of 5 stars Great singing from the three tenors.......2005-06-23

This cd is a must-have for anyone interested in opera - or beautiful singing. And when you're at it - why don't buy the dvd from the concert? It will make you appreciate the cd even more.

First of all I have to comment on the editorial review of this cd. I felt the reviewer is "belittling" José Carreras here by saying he's one step behind the big brothers and his singing isn't as captivating as that of the big boys.....?!?!? Of course I can only speak for myself, but I feel she's way out of line. And I'm starting to wonder if she's been listening to the cd at all? In my opinion you have to be dead not to be touched by his rendition of "Lamento di Federico" and "L'improvviso". If anybody can deliver a line it has to be Carreras. When it comes to his interpretation of "Granada" even conductor Zubin Mehta was gobsmacked. Watching the dvd you can see him putting down his baton and applauding. He even steps down from his podium to hug José.

I have to say I'm not too keen on the two other tenors, although I have to admit I loved Pavarotti's "Torna a Surriento" and "Rondine al nido". The thing about Pavarotti is that he has a great singing technique and he's also in possession of this "push-button" which make him sing a lot of high notes, but that alone isn't enough to stir emotion.

As for Domingo, even if he's giving it all in every song, and his "No puede ser" was great,I think he's a bit too much on the nasal side. He's okay when they all perform together, but his "E lucevan le stelle" is sending shivers down my spine - and not of delight. I'm practically unable to sit still and listen to his solos. If you really want "fire and pain" you should check out Carreras in the Tosca-recording from -80, or his recording from -76. It's really breathtaking and I promise you'll end up in tears!

At the end of this concert the three tenors perform a medley together. Their voices blend perfectly and it's powerful to listen to them giving it all. A lot of people are talking about their mis-pronounciations. I for one, think it only adds to the charm of the performers. Pavarotti has some problems with the English songs (okay, big problems..), Domingo stumbles in the words in the beginning of "Wien Wien nur du allein", and (this you'll see in the dvd) in the same song Carreras is actually reading the text from a piece of paper as he's singing and his facial expressions when getting his head around the German words are really hilarious. O sole mio as an encore is fabulous when Pavarotti pushes his button and shakes out all his high notes.... And I love it when the two other join forces and repeat his stunt to perfection.

All in all this is a wonderful album. And well worth 5 stars.... José alone gets 10 stars!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent. Like summer sunshine. manna from heaven!.......2004-05-28

This CD is terrific on so many levels. In celebration of one of the world's great sporting events - the World Cup of football (soccer to us stateside), three great tenors and one masterful conductor (Zubin Mehta) were brought together in one of the world's great cities - Rome -- for a special evening that we are blessed to have been able to listen to again and again.

The concert was held during the World Cup in 1990 at the Baths of Caracella, which are ruins of the once great Roman baths. In this beautiful setting Luiciano Pavrotti, Jose Carreas and Placido Domingo came together for one of the best CD's ever made.

The singing is exquisite. The passion of the crowd in this live performance should equal the reaction of the listener. This is art at its highest level. It is a celebration of great music, not just of opera, but in my opinion, the soaring human spirit. What power to move the soul! You don't need to be an opera fan to enjoy this music. If you like any kind of music, you cannot help but be affected by the power of this special evening. And what an evening, those in attendance were lucky to have been there!!

The casual listener will already know some of these arias, as they are from some the great operas of all time. However, I believe even the most hardenend opera fan, unless he or she is a real stiff, cannot be helped to be but moved by this music.

It is heavenly! I recommend this CD to you, because in my humble opinion, it will bring sunshine to your heart!!! : )

Back in 1990, three of the world's most celebrated tenors--namely, José Carreras, Plácido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti--combined forces to create the Three Tenors, now celebrated on a best-of CD. They gave their first concert in Rome. The event was recorded and went on to become one of the best-selling classical titles of all time.

This latest release brings together tracks from that night in Rome (including "Nessun dorma" and a competitive rendition of "O sole mio") with music performed in a 1994 concert in Los Angeles and at the 1998 event in Paris where the Three Tenors sang to an audience of thousands with the Eiffel Tower as their backdrop.

The 22 tracks making up The Best of the Three Tenors range from operatic standards, such as the joyful "Brindisi" from La Traviata, to popular songs like "Singin' in the Rain" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" (from Carousel). There are no solos on this disc; each piece is performed by all three singers. And with plenty of applause and cheering to be heard, not to mention the sense of fun in the singers' voices, the disc captures the atmosphere of these extraordinary musical events. --Rebecca Agnew

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-03-18

This is a good recording. If you don't like the 3 tenors, then look else where. It's that simple. These are recordings from concerts where they WERE supposed to show off. This ain't opera. If you want opera, go out and attend one.

5 out of 5 stars The best from the three greatest..........2005-08-11

The first thing we must establish here is that this is not meant to be opera. This is three exceptionally talented tenors enjoying themselves and giving tremendous joy to those listening by singing mostly popular "evergreens" and also some operatic arias. The beauty in music lies in the diversity, in my opinion. One can better appreciate one type of music when one knows about the others. And why should we limit ourselves to listen to just one genre in music. It would be the same as having steak for dinner every day for the rest of your life, wouldn't it? So why should we limit three wonderful tenors to only sing operatic arias for the rest of their lives? If so we wouldn't have "Maria", "You'll never walk alone", "Singing in the rain" or any of the evergreens on this recording and that would be a shame.

There are no solos on the cd. I think I've read somewhere that they felt there had been enough "three tenors cd's" and if they were to release yet another one it would be one containing what the audience demands, the three of them joining forces and performing together in the songs.
The result, in my opinion is highly recommendable. The three voices blend perfectly together. I have to admit that I have a personal favourite among the tenors and that I would never buy an entire recording featuring only one of the two others, but I recognize their talents and -as stupid as it may sound- since they are performing together I can also appreciate the other two. (I like them too, but in smaller doses....)Some people have commented on their problems with mastering the english language. If anything, I think it just adds to their charm. By the way, who is perfect??

The songs on this cd is a mixture of beautiful songs, heartwrenching songs, toe-tapping songs and powerful songs. It's wonderful to just listen to the beauty in the three voices. It's fun hearing Pavarotti pushing his "high-note-button" in "O sole mio" and Carreras and Domingo copying his stunt. I have no idea what they're singing about in "Manha de Carnaval", but boy does it sound romantic...... And "Dicitencello vuie" brings tears to my eyes (even if I'm still left in the dark when it comes to understanding the meaning of the words...) In "Because" Carreras takes my breath away when singing "because God made thee mine, I'll cherish thee...through light and darkness, through all time to be, and pray his love may make our love divine...." (What woman wouldn't like to hear those words..??!?) Their rendition of "You'll never walk alone" should satisfy some of the soccer-fans since it's the anthem of a European football-club and "Nessun Dorma" will probably satisfy the rest of the soccer-fans, being the antheme of the 1998 world soccer championship. In short, there should be something for every taste on this cd.

It's a very "versatile" cd. You can play it almost everywhere. You can sing along to it in the car, you can dance around the house to it while doing your chores, you can put your feet up and unwind after a hectic week. Or you can write an Amazon review while listening to it.... (Feel free to add suggestions of your own here.....)

To make a long story short - a very enjoyable cd!

5 out of 5 stars Just Like the Real Thing!.......2005-07-14

A few years ago I was lucky enough to actually see a Three Tenors concert. The experience was amazing. Later I bought this CD. I was so happy when I listened to it because the CD captures the mood of being present at the concert. I like the variety and every time I play it, I am taken back to my personal experience at the concert. Hearing the audiences on the CD really gets you excited about hearing this amazing trio.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful and moving!.......2004-10-21

I got this CD as a gift and it changed my life! I was always a rocker and liked classical music, but never was much into this genre of music. This album changed all of that. Since getting the three tenors I've found a whole new world out there. Thank you guys!

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation.......2003-07-16

Definitely worth purchasing. It is not an opera CD - it is a concert CD with 3 superb tenor voices that blend together so nicely. A wonderfully entertaining music CD with lots of variety and an opportunity for opera to grow on non-opera lovers. What else can you expect from the BEST. A DVD version would be wonderful.

In the short time since they grouped together a few years ago to form their sensationally successful trio, the Irish Tenors have already put out an impressive array of recordings and DVDs, including some bona fide gooseflesh-inducing live concert performances. So, if you still have the enviable pleasure of discovering these amazing vocalists--or want to turn a friend on to their musical charms--this compilation CD will do the trick nicely. It brings together such classics as "Danny Boy," "Toora Loora Looral," "Last Rose of Summer," and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" (featuring John McDermott)--all rendered with the kind of passionate, heartfelt, and harmonious crooning that is their signature style, whether they're singing as an ensemble or as highlighted soloists. And even if you have the complete Irish Tenors, this anthology includes several numbers not found on their previously released CDs. Hard to think of a sweeter treat for a fan of singing too good to ever go out of fashion. --Sarah Chin

4 out of 5 stars Irish at it's best........2007-05-07

This album is really the number two album from this trio. It is very good and well worth the investment. The five star album by The Irish Tenors would have to be Heritage. Both albums rate high in my book.

So wonderful. So much fun.

Up here in backwash Maine, there ain't much, believe me. But these guys are great. Sincere, care about what they're doing, true artists.

Ah, to go to Ireland again. Well, not unless the price of natural gas recedes!

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Irish Tenors is just that!.......2005-01-22

This recording is wonderful. Ronan's "last Rose of summer" is unique, the Percy French medley shows all three in great voice, Finbar's Maggie is wonderful and the laurels have to go to Anthony for his magnificent rendition of "She moved through the fair", wow!!!!

Well worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Ever wondered what was before Bach, Lully, or Palestrina?.......2007-04-29

During the days of the Renaissance, the madrigal was one
of the most popular musical forms and outputs. The King's Singers, a modern-day all male vocal group, demonstrate the authentic sound of which these 34 chosen madrigals may have been performed. In the Renaissance, in place of sopranos and altos, there were countertenors (men who sang falsetto in a feminine range). That's what these guys do; just listen to the first few and you'll automatically be transported back to this magical and sort of other-worldly time. If you've been to Renaissance fairs, it will make you think of those, too.

The King's Singers offer 34 well-chosen madrigals from composers like John Dowland, Hans Leo Hassler, Clement Jannequin and some composers who wished to remain anonymous. They are grouped by the different languages to show that the madrigal wasn't just the rage in Italy where it had originated but at various other places all over Europe, the hub of the music world. The Italian ones come first, then in English, French, Spanish and German. The best one in the set is "La Guerre" which runs 6 minutes, and is an incredible vocal showpiece. It's even very funny at times.

If you want to hear exactly how Renaissance madrigals sound, this is the real deal.

4 out of 5 stars Serviceable Tchaikovsky Ballet Interpretation by Andre Previn.......2006-12-24

This is a good rendering of three of Tchaikovsky's most well known ballets--Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and the Nutcracker. Andre Previn conducts the London Symphony Orchestra.

The sound is crisp, the orchestra plays handsomely, Previn leads the orchestra well. The Nutcracker, for example, is a nice interpretation and, at Christmas time, adds an enjoyable element to the household as one plays the music.

I would not say that this is an inspired CD, treading new territory in interpreting Tchaikovsky. But it is a well done work and will be pleasing to most listeners.

2 out of 5 stars dull previn.......2005-08-01

i like the playing at times from the london synphony but previns interpertation ruins it.these are great masterpeices that deserve better,iv never liked the way previn does his music to begin with to dull, not a good conductor, and when the london synphony got him in the late 60s he was pretty inexperienced as a conductor of classical music and it shows here

5 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky's greatest music........2002-09-08

Tchaikovsky was one of the most beloved classical music composers. Many of his compositions -- including his piano and violin concertos -- are among the most popular of all classical compositions. But Tchaikovsky's finest compositions were his three ballets, excerpts of which are presented on this CD. And one of the most outstanding conductors of Tchaikovsky's ballets is Andre Previn. My first recommendation would be to get complete performances of all three of Tchaikovsky's ballets. However, those who wish to sample the highlights of these masterpieces can do no better than this outstanding -- and bargain priced -- CD. This is some of the greatest music ever written by anyone, beautifully performed by a master of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars A new musical Christmas tradition.......2004-12-14

This recording was my first experience with the Trapp Family Singers (other than knowing the story from The Sound of Music). I cannot state how pleasently surprised I was.

First of all, the technical quality of the recording is extraordinary. The selections were originally mastered between 1951 - 1953 by Deutsche Grammophon. Yet, despite the early dates, they sound like they were recorded yesterday.

The performances are even more extraordinary. The a capella settings of these traditional Christmas songs are rich in harmony and performed with a clarity rarely heard today. Of particular interest is the Michael Praetorius setting of Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen (Lo how a rose err blooming), Deck the hall with boughs of holly, and the Bach setting of Lobt Gott, ihr Christen alle gleich.

The family is conducted by Dr. Franz Wasner and the enclosed booklet offers a wonderful history of the family by writer Steven Ledbetter.

Overall, this recording has quickly become a new Christmas favorite of mine. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Songs from Many Nations - Flawlessly Sung.......2004-10-14

The first 18 tracks on this CD are from an LP of the same name that was a family favorite of ours since the 60s. The vocals are very precise, with noticeable German accents (especially on "Jesus Rest Your Head"). The Trapps, directed by Fr. Wasner, perform songs from their native Austria, including the hauntingly beautiful Scheibendudler (a kind of solemn jodler). Some listeners may not much like their rendition of traditional English or American songs (Deck the Halls, Jesus Rest Your Head). The less familiar Latin and foreign songs are a real treat. Favorites are "A la Nanita" (Spanish), Nu ar de Jul Igen (Swedish), and "Zu Bethlehem Geboren" (German). Most songs are done a capella, although there is recorder accompaniment on one or two. A songbook containing the first 18 songs with music is available from Amazon. All in all, a fine recording and great change of pace from the more usual Christmas music.

This beautiful CD of music from the 13th to 16th centuries in France, England, Spain, Italy, and the Low Countries finds the all-male Orlando Consort centering their attention on texts having to do with the garden and flowers. They open with a beautiful chanson by Machaut and his unique technique of playing melodies and texts off one another simultaneously to make a stunning blend--an ideal floral arrangement, if you will. The Virgin Mary is often referred to in floral terms, so many of these works are religious in nature, and there's a terrific motet by Brumel from The Song of Songs. Tempi and textures vary, so that there's never a sense of tedium. The CD comes with a grandly illustrated booklet, filled with reproductions, in brilliant color, of Medieval and Renaissance art. The idea, the music making, the presentation are all ravishing; this is already one of the best CDs of 2006. --Robert Levine

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Original but flawed concept.......2007-06-18

In this very visual CD, to some extent pre-empted by their earlier recording entitled 'Food, Wine and Song' (HMU907314), the Orlando Consort present a rich and varied programme of music spanning more than 3 centuries (c.1250-1590), both sacred and secular alike. The concept is original and interesting, accompanied by 2 lucidly written essays by Sir Roy Strong and Susan Hitch, and even a Medieval-inspired garden design by Christopher Bradley-Hole, for the horticulturally enthusiastic (to 'turn...into reality' or for 'picturing...in your mind's eye as you listen to the music', liner notes p.15).

However, this striving to present an 'original' concept results in a programme which in truth is only partially successful. Many of the texts draw upon allegory, particularly in the various settings of the Song of Songs (tracks 7, 12, 14, 16, 17, 21 and 24). In Medieval interpretation (and analogous to the tradition of 'amour courtois'), the Song of Songs was seen as alluding to the relationship between the Virgin Mary and the adoring believer, hence the strong association of such texts with the feasts of the Ascension (August 15) and Nativity (September 8) of the Virgin. Elsewhere, conventional symbolism portraying Mary as the 'rose' who bore Christ (tracks 5 and 18) is exploited, and 2 pieces - Trebor's 'Passerose de beaute' (track 4) and Agricola's 'Royne des flours' (track 9) - draw upon religious allegory whilst being simlutaneously placed within the courtly love tradition.

Susan Hitch briefly touches on some of this (p.12), but its significance in the context of this programme is overlooked - that rather than imparting much information on Medieval and Renaissance Gardens (which at any rate would be difficult for the texts based on the [pre-Medieval] Song of Songs, written c.350-200 B.C.!), most works shed more light on Medieval/Renaissance allegorical conventions (see below 1*). This in turn affects the performing context. The bold assertion that the music recorded here 'must once have been heard in the open air' and 'would have found its setting in 2 contrasting garden styles' (liner notes, p.8) seems problematic, particularly for the sacred works - intended for ecclesiastical performance and in any case unlikely to have been performed as minimalistically as here (see below 2*).

The performances themselves are generally tight, both in ensemble and intonation, although occasionally the top-heavy vibrato results in readings which are a little saccharine (and probably anachronistic). In all, despite the originality of the concept, this CD is not a patch on earlier recordings by the Orlando Consort which are both more polished and programmatically more convincing - in particular, 'The Mystery of Notre-Dame', 'Dreams in the Pleasure Garden' and 'The Saracen and the Dove'. If you've not come across this group before and can forgo the flashy packaging, these 3 discs are well worth discovering instead.

*1 - In addition, flowers were associated with youthfulness, hence the correlation of the theme with 'amour courtois', evident in many of the texts here (see tracks 1, 4 etc; also prose examples such as Le Jardin des Nobles, Paris BN MS fr193)
*2 - This is especially true of the Spanish works - a document preserved in Seville Cathedral dated 1586, possibly written by Guerrero himself, not only confirms the importance of instrumental participation (cornett, shawm, recorder, dulcian), but even states that 'hearing the same instrument always wearies the listener' (see Robert Stevenson, Spanish Cathedral Music in the Golden Age, 1961, p.167)

5 out of 5 stars The Constant Gardener.......2007-05-14

Gardening is not one of my strong points. Actually I hardly notice them, unless we are talking about the legendary English ones or one of the marvelous Versailles. In this particular case, gardens are not only wonderful, fine and well maintained. They are medieval. And the music of this CD is most becoming to their beauty.

I have to confess that though I am a profound fan of sacred early music I am not equally attracted to the somehow light mood of the secular scores of the same period. This Harmonia Mundi compilation, though secular in subject, achieves a musical result of the magnitude we experience in sacred works: Soothing and meditating. Accompanied by a booklet full of gardening information and exquisite pictures.

In short, a magnificent and remarkable work. And not without reason: Paradise Lost was actually a garden...

4 out of 5 stars Precise performances of festive music.......2006-08-11

This anthology of early Christmas music provides a refreshing alternative to traditional seasonal releases, introducing the newcomer to these works with a representative and well contrasted programme. The performances - by a much reduced Oxford Camerata - are carefully executed and well-balanced, if perhaps not authoritative, and a bargain at this price.

From a musicological viewpoint, there are, however, a few points worthy of mention. Firstly, it must be admitted that there is a certain degree of artistic licence with the title "Medieval Carols" given the inclusion of 2 Renaissance works in the programme - 'Riu, riu, chiu' (from 'Villancicos de diversos autores' [1556] but here craftily attributed to "traditional") and 'Gaudete!' (correctly indicated as of 15th century origin, but in fact here performed as in the extant version from 'Piae Cantiones', 1582). In addition, whilst the 'Agincourt' carol may draw attention to the varying functions served by the Medieval carol, it is textually at odds with the rest of the programme (commemorating Henry V's famous 1415 victory there). Lastly, it seems a shame that here - as on so many other recordings of pre-Baroque Christmas music - texts and pronunciation are modernised, a fact exacerbated by some peculiar word-underlay in some of the editions.

Still, the CD is well worth owning for the music alone (particularly at this price) and goes some way to reminding us that Christmas is more than merely a secular family occasion.
