Customer Reviews:
good for what it is.......2004-10-03
I feel that I needed to bump up the rating for this album. All the people who gave it bad reviews actually wanted to hear Van Halen, well, I say, buy a Van Halen album! This CD is what it is, a very well done piece of techno/electronica done to the tune of Van Halen. What else would you expect when it's put out by Cleopatra records? This is what Cleopatra records does when they put out a Tribute albums, the majority of their bands are techno/electric and or goth, which are all excellent for their respective genres.
The songs on this album inpaticular are refreshing takes on the classic Van Halen songs, they may not have great vocals, but this is a Tribute, not a Remix album. Some people must been expecting a remix with the original vocals, they need to look at a music dictionary once in a while. Although I would not reccomend this disc to any true Halen fans, I would highly reccoment this album to techno/electronica fans and Cleopatra fans, which is what I am. I was very happy with this purchase, and that's exactly why I gave it a 5 star rating. This album has entertained me, and that is the purpose of music.
Close...but not quite.......2000-10-20
First of all, I think that the concept of this album is really cool. I don't understand all the bad reviews saying "This is just remixes of old VH." Of course it is...that's the whole point. These are the people who shouldn't even be interested in buying the CD. If you're not open to electronic music, don't even consider this CD, because you will just be disappointed. I, on the other hand, knew exactly what I was getting into when I bought it and will review it as such.
The problem I have with this album is the cover bands doing the songs. There is one underlying theme in most of electronica: no vocals. They aren't traditional songs with verse and chorus, and unfortunately sound pretty bad when someone tries. In almost all of the songs on this album, the beats are really cool. They experiment with the guitars and the song melody real well. The problem is when the vocals come in. They just sound out of place with all the techno in the background. The best song on here is Hot For Teacher because they don't try to sing all the lyrics. It is the type of song you would hear at a club and think, "That sounds like they were trying to do Van Halen."
I'm not recommending the album, but this is not because it is electronic VH. I think that a remixed album with songs "inspired" by VH tunes would be a lot better than VH covers with a beat in the background.
Not very good at all.......2000-08-22
Despite reading the other reviews and listening to some of the songs on Napster--I would suggest that you download some songs to preview as well--I decided to go ahead and purchase the CD. It truly is not very good at all. I do not understand why metal bands decided to do electronic versions of Van Halen songs or why Bruce Kulick produced it. Nevertheless, I felt that it belonged with my VH collection.
Why?.......2000-04-30
The 1st question I asked myself after one listen was 'Why did I buy this?' The second was 'Why did they make this album?' A techno tribute to Van Halen? That may not be such a bad idea. But, why are there heavy metal artists doing it? The songs hardly resemble the originals, and to me, the CD defeats it's own purpose. They should have just done a techno album of original music - I would have probably liked it better.
Not to hot for remixes.......2000-04-23
Let me start of by saying I love VH, techno music, and remixes of songs. However this Cd is soo butchered its like a crappy DJ made this for his first ever remix set. The techno over powers the lyrics in more than one song. There are only a few songs that have the entire lyrics in them , otherwise they are just poor cuts and loops. If you were to seperate the techno and the covers you would have two good seperate cd's.Dont get me wrong I liked the versions of "Runnin w/ the devil"and "Unchained" not much more than that though. Maybe next tribute will be a little better, lets hope.
