While the Yardbirds graduated three of the greatest guitarists in rock history--Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page--during their 1963-68 existence, the group's best work came during Beck's '65-'66 tenure, which produced nearly all their hit singles and virtually everything found here. (Notable exception: their debut hit, "For Your Love," which Clapton was barely audible on anyway.) From the cat scratch fever of "I'm A Man" to the guitar-as-weapon solo in "Mister, You're a Better Man Than I," Beck rewrote the lead guitar textbook, and on one of the few songs recorded when he and Page were in the band together--"Happenings Ten Years Time Ago"--they foreshadowed the sound of '70s rock. --Billy Altman

5 out of 5 stars This is where the roots took hold.......2006-11-12

I was reading through the reviews I saw where someone called the Yardbirds 'leaning towards pop rock.....I am sorry but were you there in 64 cause I was and when I saw the Ybyrds at the Hulabaaloo on Sunset Blvd there was no Jimi, no Carlos, no Janice, Bealtles there were and Stones there were but put them in club with Ybyrds and you had no contest the Big Boys had singers and writers and genius but blazing ear-shattering blistering blues rock well like I said no contest. Clapton, Beck, Paige was it lucky chance? Not hardly it was the best seeking out the best. Get this CD and you hold the root structure and 'first fruits' of all we treasure today. I recently saw Velvet Revolver in S Fla and I was whipped back 40 yrs blazing searing ROCK great vocals freight train bass and drums but what I saw back then was in club of maybe 150. Own this CD as a show of graditute for those that gave us Hard Rock and remember we too have roots.

5 out of 5 stars So, Cool.......2006-08-18

Being a huge fan of sixties music, I find this CD very appealing in terms of content, originality, and style. This group boasts three of thee greatest guitarists in the world; Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. Their blues inspired wailings make this group stand out above other groups of the same era.

This music is gritty and raw and because the sound production wasn't really great on this particular album, it sounds a lot darker and moodier than maybe it's supposed to be. I'm not a musician and I have no idea about the technical aspects of music, but having been raised by a musician, I know in my soul how things should sound.

If you're looking to improve your music collection you really can't go wrong with this little gem. I know a lot of people gave it four stars and I'm not trying to disuade you from reading their reviews, but I really think (and feel) that if you want something loud, boisterous and completely cool, this CD is waiting for you.

Peace...

4 out of 5 stars Yardbirds - 'Greatest Hit,Vol.1: 1964-1966' (Rhino/WEA).......2006-07-08

Total of eighteen tracks here, most fans should recognize these cuts, like "For Your Love","Evil Hearted You","Shapes Of Things",the boot stompin' "I'm A Man","I Ain't Got You","Got Love If You Want It" and so on.With all the Yardbirds compilation CD releases out there, this one is a pretty good pick,I thought.I realize there are certain tunes you likely remember that don't appear on this CD,but keep in mind, this is Vol.1.Semi-recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Mother Lode for Second British Invasion.......2006-02-16

The Yardbirds were one of those great 'first British Invasion' groups whose primary claim to later fame is the fact that they provided the breeding ground for the stars of the 'second British invasion' lead by Cream, Traffic, and others. The thing which is so easy to forget is that groups like the Yardbirds, the Spenser Davis Group, Manfred Mann, Them, and the Graham Bond Organization were such fertile breeding grounds because their stuff was darn good itself.

I love it when I see contemporary commercials come up with songs from these great early bands, and listening to this album shows us just how important the Yardbirds were in their own right, not just as the launching pad for the careers of Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Paige.

This is an essential album for any survey of rock roots!

5 out of 5 stars Good stuff .........2005-06-21

Will there be a volume 2? hard to tell with Rhino .. I hope they put "Over Under" on there ,and Jeff's Boogie .. which was left off the Raven compilation .

4 out of 5 stars This was has some major holes for a "greatest hits" album.......2003-06-29

The Yardbirds are certainly one of the most unstable British rock groups of all time, reflected by the fact that it produced three of the greatest guitarists in history: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page. It is mostly because all three started out with the Yardbirds that the group is regarded so highly even though they only had a half-dozen Top 40 hits in 1965-1966: "For Your Love" (#6), "Heart Full of Soul" (#9), "I'm A Man" (#17), "Happening Ten Years Time Ago" (#30), "Over Under Sideways Down" (#13), and "Shapes of Things" (#11). I provide the list to show the shortcomings of this 25 track collection from Repertoire. You get only four of their top six hits and there are several "hits" collections which rectify this problem. True, most of those are multi-disc collections, but we are talking about one of the pivotal rock 'n' roll groups of the Sixties.

Although the Yardbirds started off doing covers of R&B and Blues songs they eventually turned to the moody pop-rock that would define their sound as Clapton, Beck, and Page experimented with sounds that human beings could produce from an electrical guitar. Along with the Byrds, the Yardbirds were the pivotal pioneers in terms of psychedelia, so they are one of the rare groups whose impact outweighs their music. You should have a solid Yardbirds collection in your music library, but this is just not it. Trivia point: the group's original guitarist was Anthony Topham, who was forced to leave the group by his parents (he was 16 at the time) and was replaced by Clapton, an art college classmate of lead singer Keith Relf.

4 out of 5 stars An unexpected gem -- the Yardbirds at their finest hour.......2002-04-11

I first bought this compilation on cassette in a record store's discount bin back about 1985. I think I paid a whopping two bucks for it at the time, and that in conjunction with the fact it was on a label I didn't know existed didn't leave me expecting much in the way of sonic quality... but this collection blew me away.

I had that tape in almost constant audio rotation -- even after the cheap German cassette housing warped after sitting on the front seat of my car one summer afternoon. Even then, I would still pop it in the cassette player now and again, keeping my fingers crossed that it would still play. The tape finally expired on a cross country trip in the summer of 2000 -- hopelessly wedged in the cassette deck of our rental car. Fifteen years wasn't a bad run, though.

I have since purchased many Yardbirds compilations, but none of them have approached the stripped down genius of this collection. The sound is crisp, the track order flows beautifully, and there's a wonderful mix of live and studio cuts.

However, this collection's crowning acheivement is that it boasts the single best version of "Train Kept A Rollin'" that has ever existed -- Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page playing simulanteous lead guitar while two versions of the song's lyrics are also song simultaneously, coming together to sing the chorus in unison. Brilliant!

This collection features the band at it's peak, before Keith Relf wandered away into inebriated oblivion.

"Ladies and gentlemen, good evening, it's time for bird-merizing, yard-merizing, in fact -- most blues-wailing Yardbirds. Here they are one by one ... Five live Yardbirds!"
