5 out of 5 stars Ouch! My Ears!.......2007-03-30

To better understand Jeff Beck's Music, you must better understand Jeff, first. Considered by many to be the best Rock guitarist of all time, he didn't always receive the recognition that he thought that he deserved. Having to step in as a replacement guitarist for Eric Clapton when he joined the Yardbirds may have fanned the flames in the beginning. And after pioneering in Distortion, Feedback, and Fuzz Tone, he dropped out and formed his own band, but before the TRUTH album was released, Jimi Hendrix came to town and stole some of Jeff's thunder, doing exactly the same things Jeff was doing on stage years earlier with the Yardbirds. If that wasn't bad enough, Jeff had a fit when he heard those early Led Zeppelin records. His good pal, Jimmy Page, stole alot of his ideas and drove them into the ground! (By the way, whatever happened to "Pagey"?) So Jeff really had an ATTITUDE by the time BECK-OLA was recorded. There's alot of Thunder and Lightning on this record! Perhaps those Zeppelin Lps helped steer Jeff in this direction after all, because it was a complete departure from the TRUTH album. BECK-OLA has a Live feel to it, and alot of noise, too. There was alot of tension within this group at the time, getting ready to explode, and it did. Too Bad.

4 out of 5 stars Beck-Ola Redux.......2007-03-07

Look, I've reviewed this incendiary slab of raw power at least twice for amazon (the US edition from 2000 and the UK EMI from 2004 on which this version is based), and to keep it short and simple: Jeff Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart, Nicky Hopkins, and Tony Newman's 1969 classic gets better with age, presages skronk, grunge, hard rock and "metal" (without the illusion of control), and injects funk into its punk: the Stooges' "Funhouse" meets Led Zep circa disc one of "Pyisical Graffiti"... The unparalleled, explosive, apocalyptic intensity of the former crossed with Zep's musicianship (but utterly lacking Page's innate sense of calculation, which is partly why the JBG aren't "classic rock" radio staples). 1968's "Truth" was of course the template for the Zep debut, but this is something altogether wilder, crazier, a go for broke recording that seems to end violently, suddenly (the tape splice at the end of 'Rice Pudding' famously appropriated by the Beatles on "Abbey Road"). Crank this loud enough, pedal to the floor (Beck's band fits the idea of the guitarist's passion for racing souped up cars) and you might imagine that splice is an inevitable power outtage.
Ok, more in the other "Beck-Ola" reviews, but here's the rub: I'd swear this is cut from a different master from that 2004 (UK) EMI edition, which features the very same bonus tracks. There's a smokey haze in here, a subtle air of containment that gets in the way - this Legacy edition smolders, but it lacks the fire of the EMI, that reaches right out and scorches you through your speakers.(The bonus cuts, all worthwhile, interestingly sound the same - hence my feeling that the UK and US 'original masters' are different. Other indications include the fact that the timings vary by a few seconds on at least a couple songs). The difference is right there on Beck's vicious SKWAAAOW emitted right before Wood's phat bass solo on "Spanish Boots" - he's in the room with you on the EMI.
This is wild, truly "alternative" stuff, the inevitable violent crash was right around the next hairpin turn: "Beck-Ola" was recorded in April '69, the JBG was in pieces by the end of July, Ron and Rod off to the Faces, Hopkins to the Stones and the Airplane, and Beck of course battered and bruised in a real car crash, caused, it is rumored, by a hallucination he experienced in which he BELIEVED Vanilla Fudge was revealed to be rock 'n' roll's great white hope and where his very own destiny lie.
Oh well, click on over and get those two UK Beck Group classics while they last!

5 out of 5 stars No Sophomore Slump.......2007-02-09

Beck-Ola (1969) Jeff Beck's second studio album.

Before Led Zeppelin came along and blew everyone away, Jeff Beck had helped create that hard and heavy blues sound with "Truth", and here, on the almost-as-good "Beck-Ola", Jeff and the gang play it loud and don't look back. Whether it's a cover of an old song or something completely new, Beck finished the sound that he had started on the previous album and, unfortunately, watched as his old bandmate rose to levels of super-stardom.

The album kicks off with a cover of the Elvis classic "All Shook Up". Rod Stewart's vocals are incredible, and the heavy riff planted by Beck, not to mention the skillfully played bass by Ron Wood and piano by Nicky Hopkins, is awesome and practically danceable, making a sort of boogie-rock. There is also the instrumental "Girl From Mill Valley", written and performed mostly by Nicky Hopkins. While not a standout track, it is certainly easy on the ear, the only song on the album like that. Next is the big rocker and cover, "Jailhouse Rock". Sometimes I think that Beck and Stewart should have just gone through Elvis's catalogue and covered his songs, because both of them are excellent.

The extra tracks are also interesting, though the sound quality isn't all that great on the alternate takes of the covers. It doesn't bring the album down, but it would have been nice if they could have been restored a bit better. In the end, "Beck-Ola" is a huge triumph for Beck, and is the last album to feature Stewart, Wood, and Hopkins. Internal conflicts would dissolve this group before they could become even greater.

5 out of 5 stars this is your dady's rock n roll.......2007-02-03

What made these musicians famous is brillant, and crystal clear. This is the group that brought an 18 yr. old rod stewart to the states and taught him how to put together the music and the show to go with it. This is the group that gave birth to Cactus, the american version of Led Zep. No where else have I been able to appreciate Ron Woods as the consumate rock bass player then on this album. Without the work of nikki hopkins and ansley dunbar to carry the engine this could not have been the high performance vehicle it was. And last of all and best of all is Jeff Beck at his young best. Want to play lead guitar? Learn every lick on this recording and you might be ready to learn some Jimmie Hendrix. Hendrix and Beck are twin suns in the same universe, the rest of us just get to watch!

5 out of 5 stars Rock the remasters!.......2006-12-30

Along with it's predecessor Truth, this is the one-two punch of blues butt kicking that Jeff Beck unleashed on the world in the days before Led Zeppelin exploded globally and buried rock and blues in an avalance of heavy-handed overkill. This new release with the excellent inclusion of Sweet Little Angel is worth the replacement of your oldie, especially at the budget price. It's pretty much the same format as Truth, e.g. blues covers and what not, but there is great original stuff in Plyth and Rice Pudding (check out the riff stolen by Hendrix for In From the Storm) as well as some fun and grooving covers of stuff made famous by Elvis. The liner notes again have some good Beck wit and guitarists will find plenty of coursework to learn and master.
So many "experts" are quick to mention Stevie Ray, Clapton, Page, Van Halen, and Jimi as the big guitar gods, but if this guy isn't one of the first names out of your mouth, then you really don't know what you're talking about.

4 out of 5 stars this deserves a lot more praise.......2006-11-01

This album was always knocked b/c of the over influence by Jan Hammer. That assessment is so inaccurate since the knock on Jeff Beck is that he cannot write songs, carry a band, and act as a frontman. He always needed a collaborator...enter Jan Hammer.

What is Beck's best works but "Blow by Blow" and "Wired" ... Jan Hammer influenced works?!

This a showcase of musicianship and Hammer's keyboards enhances the guitar playing, it does not detract it.

"Freeway Jam" is extended from what it was in the studio. As much as it is a guitar song, it needs heavy keyboards. It is a great rendition.

"Fool moon boogie" and "Earth" are groove tunes that allow the guitar and keyboard, trading back and forth, to establish and carry the rhythm.

"Scatterbrain" is a genuine jazz (not fusion) song.

"She's a woman" takes a Beatle's song and turns it on it's head utilizing its basic form to showcase innovative musicianship.

"Blue Wind", the closer, rev's up everything, goes for the jugular, and rocks, rocks, rocks! It takes teh great studio song and opens it up in every direction.

Beck's greatest success was in the 1970's, when he played his fusion stuff. Why would a live album, reflective of his most successful period, not be considered triumphant?

I highly recommend this.

4 out of 5 stars Brief, But Entertaining.......2006-06-12

An excellent album to introduce someone to fusion. Some live albums of this nature can go on forever, and you can easily loose interest. But with this recording there is an excellent choice of material to show off both of these two geniuses.

4 out of 5 stars I saw this show!.......2006-03-31

I saw this band, playing this set, in Perth, Western Australia god know's how long ago, I knew I wasn't old enough to drive...
Remembering that all this music was done 'live' before click tracks or on stage sequencers, this was amazing.
Some of the most amazing synth solos and comping from Jan Hammer, one of the true stylists, at his most dexterous...And Jeff Beck (with whom I wasn't really familiar at the time, though I knew he was a heavyweight...) is the perfect partner. This band had an unusual and angular sound that I haven't heard anywhere else.

This cd captures a unique moment in time with some amazing players at the peak of their abilities.

Great and exciting stuff.

4 out of 5 stars A great live album thats too short.......2006-02-12

Jeff Beck is the best guitarist on the planet and has been for a very long time.
What you get here is an abbreviated version of him live.
His song selection is not the best, but Freeway Jam which is one of my all time favorite Beck songs is included.
You also ger Scatterbrain and Blue Wind.
She's a Woman the old Beatles song is also included.
Jeff Beck at this time was playing some of his best guitar and his solo instrumental career was taking off.
The songs with the Jan Hammer Group to me are very average and infact distract what Beck is trying to to.

Unfortunately this is his only Live album from his instrumental era. I truely wish he would release a DVD of himself in concert for those who either havent seen him live or would like to see him live on DVD.
The idea was good, the Cd is too short and not up to snuff.

4 out of 5 stars Eggcellent!.......2003-03-23

This is an album worth buying. Being a 42 year old Fusion Fanatic, I'm extremely picky about what I listen to. I have a mature, well-round "musical taste-bud" and let me tell you, if you're looking for excellent Jazz Rock Fusion guitar work that's smoothly integrated with snazzy, smooth, and highly listenable keyboards, this is the album you have to buy!

5 out of 5 stars Rod and Jeff at their Greasiest! Recorded Loud to be Played Loud!.......2007-01-31

This is when Rod was a hard rock belter and Jeff was a crazy wildman of the Gibson Les Paul. The energy here makes up for the lousy sound, I think they blew a few microphones here with the volume.

5 out of 5 stars Par excellence~.......2007-01-08

I must admit I am very biased toward Jeff Beck. There are many fine guitarists, but to me Jeff Beck is the best. With Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass, you've got a supergroup that puts all the rest, to shame. Backed up with the battery of Nicky Hopkins on piano, and Tony Newman on drums, there are no bad tunes on this fantastic album.

While the World focused its attention on Led Zeppelin, the Jeff Beck Group was afforded little attention in its short shelf life. With tunes like "Jailhouse Rock", "All Shook Up", "Plynth", and "Rice Pudding" it's flying by the seat of the pants time. My only gripe is the recording sounds a bit "ragged" around the edges. However, it stands the test of time. I'll take Beck, to Clapton, Page, Holdsworth or Van Halen any day. Buy this CD, and you won't be sorry. And while you're at it, listen to how Nicky Hopkins genius augments their sound beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars great album!To short........2006-11-13

This album is classic beck but its to short.and most of the material is not original.but there are some great led zep style songs but this is much better guitar.and the jeff beck group was out before led ripoff zeppelin.

5 out of 5 stars an odd situation.......2006-08-08

On one hand, there's little original material here, but on the other: "The Plynth', perhaps the best thing Beck -or- Stewart have done, let alone done together...and although many find the instrumental "Rice Pudding" to be a bit meandering, I don't, and find it's loose structure to contain some of the best band interaction in all of rock. These two tracks alone bring this project up to '5'.

4 out of 5 stars Not his finest, but an excellent record, very much worth having.......2006-01-07

I do agree with some of the previous reviews that this is not one of Jeff Beck's very best recordings. It's not becuase his playing is off. It's not because the musicianship isn't there. It's not because the singer is "several steps down" from Rod Stewart (Bob Tench certainly is NOT in this reveiewer's opinino). IMO, it's not one of his greatest simply because the material is a bit weak and unfocused, though there are a few gems here.

Ice Cream Cakes is a tremendous rocker with one of JB's all-time coolest breaks, firmly establishing him as the man who took up where Les Paul left off. Whammy bar pyrotechnics, outrageous string bends, mashing strings into the pickups...Jeff pulls out the stops on this tune. Bob Tench's soulful vocals add a great touch and Max Middleton follows the fade out with a sort of trippy/jazzy Fender-Rhodes solo.

The band dusts off their cover of Glad All Over and Jeff adds some excellent funkity splunkity fills that are just right. Great work by drummer Cozy Powell as well.

Another cover, Don Nix's Going Down, is a classic. Middleton's intro, tinged with a gospel feel is absolutely perfect. Tench does a great job with the vocals here too. Jeff's solos on this song are fun but, IMHO, somewhat cliche and disjointed relative to much of his other guitar work.

Definitely Maybe is one of the best songs on the record, without a doubt. This instrumental features an incredibly beautiful and emmotional melody line, acompanied by an equally gorgeous harmony. I saw them perform this back in about 1973 and Bob Tench strapped on a Les Paul to accompy JB with the harmony. It was without a doubt the show-stopper and the best song in their performance. It's on this song, that JB really cemented his reputation as an innovative slide player.

Some of the other songs are quite good too, but these four make the albumn worth having. No "maybes" about it!

4 out of 5 stars This makes me glad all over.......2004-12-24

This was The Jeff Beck Groups fourth album. Two were released by the original lineup of Beck, Ron Wood, Rod Stewart, and the drummer whose name I can never remember. the third album was released by this lineup which included Steve Cropper of the MG's and it was called Rough and Ready, this being the fourth called simply The Jeff Beck Group. This is a concederable step up from Rough and Ready, because while that album had a few decent tracks it was for the most part a weak, and porly recorded album. This album is no Truth or Beck-Ola but it is still good. Jeff Beck was critizied for the song selection he chose and for his chosen guitar arrangements, they were unline anything the guitar world had ever heard before. But if you ask any guitar player who knows any thing about guitar playing like my self they will tell you Beck is one of the top five guitar players the world has ever seen! Through his whole carear Beck used out of this world guitar tones sounds and riffs, sp why should this album be any different. This album features some of Becks most inspired lead playing of his carear, and Steve Cropper played some of the best rhythm of his.

On this album the vocalist is no Rod Stewart in fact he is several steps down the ladder from Mr. Stewart, but it's ok because he gets the job done. The album opens with the concert favorite 'Ice Cream Cakes' which is a mid tempo guitar driven blues songs about how good it is to be in love. Next is 'Glad All Over' which is classic Jeff Beck and concedered one of his all tiem best songs, with sharp leads and a great driven piano line. 'Tonight I'll Be Staying With You' is a slower drown out blues song, and in my openion it is the best song on the album, great guitar work by Beck and Cropper. Next is 'Sugar Cane' which is kinda funky and jazzy at the same time and it shows Becks amazing use of the Wah-Wah pedal. Its one of my favorite love songs of all time, I dont see how anyone could not like this song, truly a great song. 'I Cant Give Back The Love I Feel For You' has a killer slide guitar solo by Beck it is really really cool, this song has an electric sitar which adds a nice touch to the crazy feel of the song. Next is 'Goin Down' which also offers some really good slide and lead playing by Beck but it comes across as a bit contrived to me and tthe lyrics are really rpetitive, so its not a strong point on the album, well for me anyways. 'I got To Have A song' is a really nice almost pop song, which could have very well been a hit single if released, this is anoter one of those songs that I dont see how anyone could not like. Then we slide right into 'Highways' which is a slow but yet very powerful blues song driven by Becks amazing use of power chords and strange and sometimes wacky leads, I really enjoy this song becuase the guitar sounds like nothing else Beck has ever recorded. The Albums closes with 'Definatley Maybe' which aside from having a really cool title is one of Jeff Becks better known songs, and for good reason its one of the best songs he ever recorded, his use of the slide never sounded better then here. 'Deffinatley Maybe' was the song that got Joe Perry of Aerosmith interested in laying slide guitar.

This album is a showcase to what an amazing guitar player Jeff Beck was back then and still is today. Many people dont like this album because it didnt compare to Truth, and all i can say to that is what does? Nothing, Truth is one of those albums that will stand on its forever. But this, Jeff Beck Group is one of the finest pieces of blues/rock in the history of the genra, so do yourself a favor and pink up this amazing album.

4 out of 5 stars One of Beck's Most Underrated Works........2003-12-30

As most everyone knows who lived through the wonderfully creative period of rock music that lasted from 1964 through, approximately, 1975, there were only about a handful of critics who had credibility in terms of being able to review and critique music, in any genre, adequately during said period. Most critics bashed this release as being "Over the top" and criticized Cropper for being out of his depth as a producer here. There was much made (Negatively) of Beck's choice of material and his guitar arrangements on this record. Personally, as a player for over 30 years myself, I think this CD offers some of his most inspired and lyrical playing, and I have listened to just about everything that Beck has released over the last 35 years. The tones he is getting out of his strat during numbers like "Going Down", "Ice Cream Cakes", "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You", "Highways" and "Definitely Maybe" are unlike anything he had ever done up to that point and, quite frankly, unlike anything he has done since. His sense of dynamics, harmonics and innovative phrasing are astonishing here for a record that was made in 1972. His command of both right and left-hand techniques is truly awesome as well. You hear Beck two-hand tapping here six years before Eddie Van Halen was doing it in clubs in Pasadena. You hear multi-layered electric guitars, electric sitars and acoustics (Although Sparingly) beautifully performed and mixed. Beck's slide playing is inspirational here as well, as is his wah-wah touch. Granted, the songs aren't singer/songwriter classics for the most part, but the reason you want to own this CD is for Beck's truly inspired and, at times, truly demented playing (Which is a good thing!).
I think Cropper's production is solid and Ron Capone engineered the tracks with a good understanding of what he was dealing with.
In Beck's Group, Max Middleton's keyboard playing is as good as it gets in this genre and Cozy Powell lays a decent groove and plays with authority when needed.
However, it is Beck who truly shines here.
Just like the critics who chastised Miles for his early to mid 70's forays into Acid Funk, all of a sudden there is a renewed interest by those same critics in that music today as being ahead of it's time and visionary. The same can be said for Beck's explosive and jaw dropping display here. When re-examined, I think many critics who blasted this release in '72 will now acknowledge that these guitar arrangements and performances by Beck are quite unlike anything from that era - controlled chaos and mayhem by a master reaching to push his own creative envelope beyond what anyone was doing at that time. For Beck fans or, more importantly, guitar fans in general, this CD is a must have. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Beck Does It Again.......2003-12-26

Practically all of Jeff Beck's albums are marvelous, and this one is certainly no exception. After the lackluster ROUGH AND READY album in 1971, the second incarnation of The Jeff Beck Group created an excellent rock album. The vocals are good. Bob Tench isn't quite as talented as Rod Stewart, but he still does a good job on most of the album.
"Goin' Down" has got to be one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. A somewhat boogie-ish tune, the groove is irresistible and Beck gets to lay down some devastating guitar work. "Ice Cream Cakes" is the perfect album opener, and an overlooked classic. "Glad All Over" almost sounds like Motown or something, but it's still a fun song. "Sugar Cane" just flat-out rocks, and "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" is a soulful Bob Dylan cover with melancholic vocals and ever MORE melancholic guitar lines.
Jeff does two instrumentals here, both of which are astounding and packed with emotion. "I Can't Give Back The Love I Feel For You" is quite lovely, but "Definitely Maybe" is absolutely Heavenly. It features the most beautiful slide guitar that I've ever heard in my life. Absolutely glorious.
"Highways" and "I Got To Have A Song" are only average.

But the rest of the songs make up for it!

5 out of 5 stars one of my two favorite beck albums.......2003-10-14

this album and rough and ready were two of my very favorites during the early seventies when they were issued and have remained near the top to the present. i love bob tench's vocals, max middleton is superb on keyboards and while in the forefront, it strikes me beck doesn't overplay in this group format. even with the greatest guitarists less is sometimes more (listen to "goin' down" on rough and ready to hear what i mean). i would advise you if you don't have this cd, get it while you can. i believe rough and ready, which is my favorite of the two, is no longer readily available, which i personally find unbelievable but i assume just not enough folks are buying these classics.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Jeff Beck album, but...........2005-08-10

Others are correct - this is not a Jeff Beck album, so don't expect it to be. However, Upp were a good little band in their own right and in particular had an excellent really funky, tight rhythmn unit in Kevin Copley and the aptly named Steven Amazing on bass. I was listening to alot of music at the time and it's certainly fair to say that there the bass style was well ahead of it's time - especially for an english (I think!) white guy. There is of course some excellent guitar playing from JB on the album - remember that this was done in the Blow By Blow era and really fits in with his style at the time. It is certainly another piece of evidence that JB is the only guitarist who ever really knew how to use a voice box properly!
So, worth it for the guitar playing & bass player & drummer, although you might find the singing and seventies synth sounds somewhat an acquired taste.

3 out of 5 stars Jeff Beck As Producer.......2002-12-20

Upp were a three pice keyboard/bass/drums outfit that caught Jeff Beck's eye in the early 70s. He agreed to produce this debut LP and recorded some guitar solos for them too. It is first and foremost an UPP recording and should not be listed under the name of Beck. His contributions are pure Beck and fans should have this CD in their collection for his playing alone.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money on this........2002-08-01

I picked this up used. Jeff Beck may be playing on it, but it is definitely NOT The Jeff Beck Group. The vague liner notes say 'Jeff Beck Band'. I think it's someone's demo of their songs. No good. Buy any other Jeff Beck album. 0 Stars
