5 out of 5 stars A treasure.......2007-07-12

I recently made a mix disc of my favorite Kansas tunes, and the majority of songs came from Masque. This is such a diverse album - pop, hard rock, prog, and all these styles work together well. The music is exhilarating, the lyrics are interesting and the musicianship is stunning. They really listen to each other while they play so they sound like a band, not like a solo artist with backup musicians. Also, there are two powerful vocalists, who alternate singing on different tunes, and their harmonies kick butt. Hard to believe this was recorded in 1975... more proof that killer music has no expiration date. This is such a treasured disc that should be in every music fans collection.

5 out of 5 stars another great album.......2007-07-07

This album is their third and was released in October 1976. When I first heard this is was a bit strange. The album is a bit disjointed, but still a pleasurable listen. It Takes a Woman's Love is an OK song, but not a very good opener. It's basically a simple three minute song they thought the record company wanted since they bugged the band for something they could make a single out of. Oh well. Two Cents Worth is a great little song that I always liked. Lyrically it's a great piece of self examination.

Icarus is a song I always liked, but as with a few of their other songs I prefer the live version. All the World is a song about dropping the hate and just being tolerant. It's a bit sappy I guess, but still a good song overall. Child of Innocence is a rocker that I wish they would have played live more often. This is another well written and well played song that ranks as one of my favorites.

It's You is a short little love song that kind of has the same feel as the first song. Recorded for use as a potential single (it didn't happen). LOL! Mysteries and Mayhem is a straight out rocker that really smokes. The several live versions i have of this are also awesome. The Pinnacle is a great ending to this album. This song has so many different bits and sections but it always seems part of a whole.

The bonus tracks here are a bit disappointing. There is a live version of Child of Innocence here. Even though I saw it was a rehearsal recording i wasn't prepared for the sound quality. They must have had a great concert performance of this somewhere they could have released instead. Oh well. It's still nice to hear them play it 'somewhat' live. The other tracks is a demo of It's You. This is nothing to get excited about and it only has a bit of a different intro and alternate parts.

Now to the sound. The original CD I had of this sounded terrible. It was hissy and heavy and just sounded like it was recorded through a damp sponge. This version however is freakin great! This truly does sound like a completely new album. All the instruments are cleaner and clearer and well mixed. The organ is more audible and the bass is deep and colorful. Even the vocals are better. I would recommend this just based on the sound quality.

So this is easily 5 stars. Buy this and give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Kansas - May Be Their Best Album.......2007-06-20

This may be my all time favorite Kansas album. To me it combines the best of what Kansas is all about with shorter rocking songs and epic progressive rock. My all time favorite Kansas composition "The Pinnacle" closes out the album. For some it may be overly melodramatic, but for me it is everything I love about progressive rock. Every band member shines on the track and Steve Walsh turns in one of his all time best vocal performances. The buildup to the dramatic climax of the piece still gets to me every time I listen to it. The rest of the album is also great. The two commercial straight ahead rockers "It Takes A Woman's Love" and "It's You" are both simple, but great little tunes. "Two Cents Worth" and "All Over The World" are two of Kansas more underrated compositions. You never hear them mentioned when people talk about their favorite Kansas tracks, but they are both great. Not really prog rock, but not really straight forward either. "Icarus - Borne On Wings Of Steel" has become a Kansas classic and again showcases Walsh's incredible vocal range. "Child Of Innocence" combines heavy rock with prog again with everyone in the band gelling perfectly. The trade off lead vocals between Robby Steinhardt and Steve Walsh totally compliment each other. "Mysteries And Mayhem" serves as the first half of "The Pinnacle" story and has remained a concert favorite for years. "Masque" did not sell as well as the previous album and certainly increased record company pressure to come up with a hit, but for me this is as good as anything the band did. If you are a Kansas fan and never picked this one up, the album should be an essential part of your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Here is "Two Cents Worth", enjoy this fine recording!.......2007-06-03

As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am frequently asked to write and speak about various rock recordings from the 60's and 70's.

Kansas in the later years was often maligned for being "Corporate Rock." An unfair slam because it should never be the style of music you are judged on but the particular record in question.

"Masque" was a bit before the anti-hype and it is a necessary album in ones collection. Some don't like "It Takes A Woman's Love" as the opening track. I could see the validity to that. Please don't misconstrue where the song is located as being a throw away tune. It fits into the scope of the project. "Icarus" may be the best moments on the disc with "Mysteries And Mayhem" and "The Pinnacle" right there for the ride.

If you have been holding off on upgrading Kansas in your collection, the bonus tracks should win you over!

Once you have listened to "Masque" several times there is always the first record and "Song For America" waiting for a nice home.

Thanks and always be well,
Craig Fenton

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Album Description

Ernest John Moeran (1894-1950) was born in London and studied at the Royal College of Music, and later under John Ireland. A man of piercing intellect and originality, he was essentially a miniaturist who nevertheless produced some outstanding larger works, like those on this classic recording. Moeran was found dead in the River Kenmare in 1950, a victim of heart failure, and his music seemed soon after to pass into oblivion; however in recent years it has enjoyed a great revival of reputation and there have been numerous recordings. These readings by Sir Adrian Boult are the most famous Moeran recordings ever put on disc.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ireland with a Twist.......2007-07-01

Moeran is an important figure in Britsh music wriiten between the wars, yet anyone coming to Moeran's music for the first time would notice that most of his recurring themes are unmistakably Irish. This is due to his Irish ancestry, and this shows in Moeran's own words when he said, the Symphony in G minor was written, " among the the mountains and seaboard of Co. Kerry."
Mostly Moeran writes his own folk tunes that are scattered through all his works, and more to the point these tunes are no artificial contrivance, but seem to naturally belong to each each movement especially in the symphony, and in his other works. The influence of Vaughan Williams is strong, but Moeran is not merely a follower. His musical harmony is diatonic with a modal flavour suggesting of folk-song.
This Lytita issue is essential for those interested in this composer. While the Naxos disc of Moeran's symphony in particular is impressive, I suggest listeners start with these classic Boult interpretations first.

5 out of 5 stars indispensible 20th century British classics.......2007-06-20

Thanks to Lyrita, we now have definitive performances of E.J. Moeran's Sinfonietta & Symphony in G minor available on cd. I've owned these performances by Sir Adrian Boult on vinyl for more than 30 years & can attest to their enduring greatness - both are under-rated works of genius that deserve a very wide audience. One listen to the magnificent sweep of the Sinfonietta will leave the first-timer wondering why there aren't at least a dozen first rate recordings of this work. (There are fine performances on Naxos by David Lloyd-Jones, & by Vernon Handley on Chandos; however, this LPO reading under Boult is the one to have.) It is a singularly original work that is modern, completely approachable, melodic & uplifting - I can't think of anything else in the repertory that's quite like it.

The Symphony in G minor is another masterpiece of 20th century music that is relatively obscure if measured by the number of recordings or orchestral programmings. The writer of the liner notes accompanying this disc observes that "it may be argued that the Moeran Symphony is among the five or six most original compositions in this genre to appear between the two world wars." Too bad he doesn't mention what those other "five or six" works are, but in any event he is placing Moeran's symphony in very high company & I agree. Works of stature like Walton's first symphony (composed in the early 1930's) come to mind, & I think Moeran's symphony is at least its equal in greatness, even though it is completely dissimilar. Unlike Walton, Moeran remained within familiar British territory by incorporating folk themes into his work, but he elevated this material to a whole new level. Like the Sinfonietta, the Symphony is "serious" music - but Moeran put musical enjoyment first & thus every moment of it is eminently listenable & rewarding.

This disc receives my highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Anglo-Celtic Orchestral Gems deserving of a wider audience.......2007-05-15

If you are drawn to the work of British classical music composers like Vaughan Williams, Holst, Bax, (all of them, not surprisingly, folksong collectors; as was E.J. Moeran)and if you appreciate the nature music and sonic landscapes of Sibelius, then the symphony on this CD may very well become a favorite. As inspiration for his masterpiece, Moeran drew almost exclusively on the countryside and oceanside vistas surrounding Kenmare, County Kerry, Ireland--a favorite haunt. The result is a persuasive evocation of environment and mood; both forever changing, and evolving throughout this work. The piece is also something of an elegy for friends lost during WWI. So there is a tangible sorrow, at times;but also astonishing, unforgettable beauty and richness. As with the aforementioned Brit composers, folk song is artfully woven into the composition. I also hear a slight Stravinsky influence in some of the tonalities (don't wanna scare you off, though!; so I will just add the whole piece is pretty accessible and easy on the ear) and a bit of a Brahms influence in some of the string writing.I do seem to occasionally get very excited by certain symphonies: even so, this one is in a class of its own. This is desert island British Classical music for me...and cheaper than a trip to Southwestern Ireland. Recommended with all possible enthusiasm!
A note on the recording history: Both the Boult (very good sounding early 70s analog)and Handley recordings of the symphony are excellent modern performances. If your ear is not offended by late 30s mono recordings, I highly recommend Leslie Heward's premiere recording of the symphony which Dutton Labs issued in an excellent remastering in the early (19)90s; coupled with an equally desirable premiere recording of John Ireland's piano concerto as played by Kathleen Long. Well worth digging up.
Moeran's Sinfonietta is also a work of considerable appeal, composed during his 1944 rush of creativity; except that here the inspiration appears to be the Radnor Forest in Wales. The Boult performance of the Sinfonietta largely holds its own with that of Beecham and Norman Del Mar. These are works well worth discovering!

5 out of 5 stars A Great British collection.......2005-10-05

This CD features several particular composers who have written pieces of music that are quintessentially British: Jeremiah Clarke, George Frideric Handel, John Stanley, John Eccles, Henry Purcell, William Corbett, Edward Elgar, Arthur Sullivan, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst and Thomas Arne. The pieces here are triumphant, celebrating that particular period of Empire when the British ruled vastly such that the sun never set upon it - one of the key elements of such triumphant music-making, particularly for the time, was the use of brass and trumpet. Some of the later composers included here draw on inspirations from these earlier times.

One of the featured performers on this collection is John Wallace, who was principal trumpet of the Philharmonia Orchestra since the 1970s; he founded the brass ensemble, the Wallace Collection, ten years later in 1986. In 2002, he became principal of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, Scotland, and the Wallace Collection gave their last performance shortly thereafter. However, the Wallace Collection lives on in performances on CD such as this one, performed with William Boughton and the English String Orchestra. Other tracks are performed by Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by Alexander Faris and the English String Orchestra conducted by Stephen Darlington.

Pieces here are very familiar to anyone with an interested in British national composition -- pieces such as the Water Music by Handel are very famous, as are Holst's 'Planets' and Sullivan's (of Gilbert & Sullivan) 'Pinafore'; other pieces, such as Clarke's 'Trumpet Voluntary', are similarly famous even if their composers did not achieve the 'brand recognition' that Handel did. All of the composers here came from the period spanning the late 1600s to the late 1700s, when music was as often written for music halls and public performances as it was for royal events and commissions.

The performances here are uniformly upbeat and well played, with little by way of blemish save the occasional drop and surge in levels (as often becomes the case when recording music with sharp brass elements).

One can envision theatres full of people waving Union Jacks while this plays, and many of the pieces have a quality about them that speaks directly to the time and place of Britain.

5 out of 5 stars If you like Baroque music, buy it; it is excellent.......2005-06-29

If you like Baroque music, buy this 2 CD's BOX SET; it is excellent. Clarke, Handel, Purcell, Corbet and so on are very well played. The orchestration is very good, the quality of recording is excellent. Remember that Baroque music uses mainly a single trumpet, few other brass instruments, some woodwinds and very few drums. It is very easy, elegant and pleasant to listen. When I got married in 2003, I have chosen only Baroque music for the ceremony and the banquet because Baroque music is so lovely, so delicate and so sweet. Even if you have never heard or you think that you have never heard Baroque music, buy this CD; I tell you, you will not regret your choice because it is really an excellent CD. You have my words.

5 out of 5 stars Desert Island Early Music Disc.......2006-03-19

I actually heard this on Ohio State's Radio Station, WOSU, way
back in the summer of 1971, I'd just picked up my dog from the vet's, there was a thundershower going on, and this fantastic
album came on the air. I was immediately entranced with it, and
immediately bought the LP. It was out of print for many years,
and so last summer when I was in Seattle for Cycle One of the Ring, I was overjoyed to see a copy of this at Tower Records;and
instantly purchased it.

This is quite possibly one of the best Early Music discs ever
made, bar none. In fact, I believe it set off the Early Music
Revolution-without it, there might be a much smaller interest in
Early Music due to living history enthusiasts, such as the SCA
(Society for Creative Anachronism), Renfaire devotees, and others.

This is the germinal album that started it all: it was the first time that a historical movie had been accurately scored
with the music and instruments of the timeperiod-and David Mun-
row's Early Music Consort's lively interpretations galvanized
a belated enthusiasm for Early Music that continues to evolve
to this very day.

In short, BUY THIS ALBUM-it is a classic. And wonderful to listen to. An added frisson is the Song by King Henry VIII him-
self, "Pastime With Good Company," in his younger days he was
quite the all-round renaissance man, jouster, writer, composer,
athlete, and his music is pretty good, too.

As a companion album to this, I would highly recommend one of the other David Munrow albums to start with, Two Renaissance
Dance Bands, which is LP format was known as Music of the Court:
Music for King Henry VIII and Elizabeth I." This contrasts the
dance music heard at both courts, and the times, also a desert
island early music disc.

In short, BUY THIS DISC!!!!!!!!!!!It kicks musical Uknowwhat!!!

It completely shatters the old, long-held belief that Early Music was dull, dull, dull. Far from it. It was every bit as
lively as anything from the 18th, 19th centuries, and our own.

5 out of 5 stars I'm thrilled to find this is now available on CD!.......2006-01-02

I first received this album as a gift way back in the early 70's, when I was an eleven year old Henry VIII fan. It is often thought to be the score for the BBC six-part series The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, but was actually the score for a spin-off movie by the same name, also starring Keith Michell as King Hal. The six-part series actually did not have much music in it (low budget).

This album has excellent examples of early music, performed on period instruments. It features one song written by Henry VIII, as well as many authentic period pieces. There are a couple of "cheats" - a setting of a poem purportedly written by Anne Boleyn in the Tower before her execution, and a Robin and Marian ballad which was written specifically for the movie, but the rest is authentic and authentically performed. The weakest part of the album is a poor choice in counter tenor, who performs Pastime In Good Company and the song made from the Anne Boleyn poem - he has problems with pitch and diction. Otherwise, the album is purely thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-12-30

This CD is actually a re-release of an old album not from the TV series but actually from a spin-off movie. The TV series is titled, "The Six Wives of Henry VIII". The movie was called "Henry VIII & His Six Wives" (which, unfortunately, was never released on video or DVD here in the states, but may be one day). Regardless, this music from the film is a wonderful example of Tudor and Elizabethan music played on authentic instruments by on of the greatest early music scholars and musicians, the late David Munrow. This is an excellent CD for fans of early music and anyone who wants to experience the true sounds of the period.

5 out of 5 stars It's on the mark........2004-12-16

I saw the mini series on PBS and I now own the videos. I believe it is on a box set of DVD's too. The music on this CD is the soundtrack to the series. If you loved Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson playing Queen Elizabeth back in the 1970's you will definitely love this series. The music and the acting are so incredibly good.

5 out of 5 stars another great gerard schwarz cornet album.......2006-02-02

Once again I am amazed by a great Gerrard Schwarz album. I own all of his albums and bought this one right away. I think he is quite possibly the most musical trumpet/cornet player ever to play alongside Maurice Andre. This album is great, and there are many more albums featuring these great players that should be re-released, such as "Festival of Trumpets" with the new york trumpet ensemble. Nontheless this album is a must pickup for any music enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Normal Repertoire....but EXCELLENT!.......2005-09-27

I didn't know what to make of this CD before I bought it, and still haven't totally figured it out as I was listening to it, but I did find it very enjoyable. "Turn Of The Century Cornet Favorites", as this CD is titled, seems to be a misnomer...I didn't recognize one selection among the 19 tracks contained, but that may be the greatest appeal of this CD for any cornet player, brass player, or aficionado desiring some relatively unknown, but well-played, music from a bygone era. As I was listening to the CD, images of the turn-of-the century came to mind. I imagined sitting near a gazebo, while a community band and soloist performed on a summer's eve, or perhaps at a pavilion at the World's Fair. Having played french horn and other brass instruments in my youth, I was familiar with the names of Clarke and Arban (who wrote a celebrated Cornet Method still used today in many colleges and conservatories), and some of their better known compositions. But I have to admit, this materials was all new to me. For anyone wanting to supplement their brass CD collection with recordings not found anywhere else, this CD will do very nicely indeed. The playing by cornet player Gerard Schwarz in amazing, with technique to burn and a beautiful tone to match. Kudos also goes to the outstanding accompaniment he receives from the Columbia Chamber Ensemble. Also, please see my review of "Footlifters" (another winner), part of the Brass Masterworks series on Sony. Keep them coming.

5 out of 5 stars This is Music.......2005-09-20

You would be hard pressed to find any recording that exhibits greater qualities of lightness, motion, and beautiful phrasing than this one. Add to that Schwartz's beautiful tone and flawless technique, and you have the perfect model of how these cornet solos should sound. I write as a trumpet player who has played quite a bit in this style.

Susan Graham has firmly established herself as one of our leading mezzos in opera and recital. Her voice, infinitely varied, perfectly focused, and produced, has the mellow glow of burnished bronze, but at the top she narrows her vibrato to give it a brighter, more intense quality. This live recording of her Carnegie Hall concert last April combines total vocal control with the spontaneity and excitement of a performance--complete with audience reactions--and displays her stylistic versatility, her charm, expressiveness, and communicative projection to brilliant advantage. The program features two German song cycles and several groups from her signature French repertoire. Brahms' "Gypsy Songs," one of his numerous Hungarian-influenced compositions, use texts derived from Hungarian folksongs and deal essentially with love and yearning. Graham captures all their changing moods, from melancholy to exuberance, making the last one soar ecstatically, but sometimes loses their simplicity in mannerisms and over-inflection. Alban Berg's "Seven Early Songs" on texts by various poets, written long before he became an atonalist, are super-romantic, amorous, dramatic; only the two final ones harbor hints of his future style. They are sung with rapturous inwardness. Four songs by Debussy on his own descriptive, pensive verses are calm, dreamy, mellow, caressing; four by Poulenc on poems of Apollinaire are satirical parodies; one is a bravura patter-song. Two songs by André Messager and one by Moises Simons, taken from their operettas, are basically cabaret songs and grand fun; they give Graham a fine opportunity to show the lighter side of her artistry. The encores include a serious song by Reynaldo Hahn, a humorous one by Debussy, Mahler's "Liebst du um Schönheit," a love song he wrote for his wife, and the first performance of a song written for Susan Graham by Ben Moore: a hilarious spoof on the fate of a mezzo condemned to sing trouser roles--with quotes from them--when she longs to be a "Sexy Lady." --Edith Eisler

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Susan Graham is a True Recitalist.......2004-12-16

Though not usually one for true live recordings that include audience applause and response, SUSAN GRAHAM AT CARNEGIE HALL works well on every level. Not only is she in top form (as is her collaborator Malcolm Martineau at he piano) vocally and interpretatively, she demonstrates here an obvious rapport with her audience that is magical.

The repertoire here could not be more varied - and successful in every portion of this recital. Graham's voice has that ability to move from her usual mezzo soprano range into the lyric/spinto range with the greatest of ease. The Brahms 'Zigeunerlieder' are full of zest and sparkle. The Debussy 'Proses lyriques' are sensually liquid and Graham's French diction is as perfect as it gets: the Poulenc cycle feels so very natural for all its underlying difficulties. The too rarely heard Berg 'Sieben fruhe Lieder' are elegant and involved and the Messanger and Simons highlight Graham's ease of strolling through unknown works, making them sound so familiar.

Encores are included and for once "thank goodness!" Susan Graham has a special affinity for Reynaldo Hahn and she has mad 'A Chloris' her very own. For the Mahlerites she offers 'Liebst du um Schonheit' (including a comment to the audience) and a Debussy song and a witty ditty written for her by Ben Moore - just for fun.

The audience fortunate enough to have been present during this live recording on April 14, 2003 have now a living memento. For the rest of us that magic is fully contained on this very special recording. Grady Harp, December 2004

Guitar-centered instrumental albums too often fall prey to the very musical virtuosity they intend to showcase. But ex-Living Colour axman Vernon Reid mostly succeeds here with a democratic musical approach that makes the diverse framework for his typically fluid fretwork often as compelling as the soloing it supports. Abetted by bandmates Leon Gruenbaum (keyboards), Hank Schroy (bass), and new drummer Don McKenzie on this second Masque album (and third Reid solo-oriented project overall), the guitarist explores everything from the space-thrash of the opening "Game is Rigged" and more faithful reggae of "Flatbush and Church Revisited" to unlikely covers of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" and Radiohead's "National Anthem." While the guitarist gives unusual creative leeway to his bandmates throughout, Reid claims the album's central theme as his own: a multi-faceted musical autobiography that variously evinces itself on the traditional fusion of "Afrerika," the languorous jazz cool of "G," and the neo-classicism of "Prof. Bebey." --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars some good tunes, but for the most part it's just noise.......2007-02-15

The Good
Meaty guitar runs and cosmic effects command "Game Is Rigged." Reid and company put a unique spin on Radiohead's "National Anthem" and Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence." Not having heard the Radiohead song, I can tell you that the Depeche Mode song is a lot darker and slower. Reid throws in his own little embellishments throughout the track. "Flatbush and Church" mixes piercing guitar runs with church organ, but somehow comes out with a reggae feel. "G" is where the group really leans on the progressive elements. Fuzzy guitars, driving keyboards, and warbling effects control "Mind Over Mind."

The Bad
I have every respect for Vernon Reid as a guitarist, but he's tried way too hard to be different and unique on this album. Some of the effects that he uses are truly things I haven't heard before, but to layer them over each, as well as the other eclectic instruments, does not make for a good musical composition. In other words, the playing and tones are great and different, but they don't make a good song when put together.

The Verdict
I was a fan of Vernon Reid's work in Living Colour, but his latest solo album just doesn't do it for me. Besides not sounding anything like I remember him, Other True Self has some good tunes, but for the most part it's just noise.

4 out of 5 stars A Nice Mix of Styles and Sounds.......2006-12-22

Vernon Reid is a hard one to classify. His guitar playing is capable of bringing in many unique sounds and styles and this CD has them all. My personal faves are the covers of Radiohead's "National Anthem" and Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence".

Jazz fans, rockers, and lovers of world music will dig this one. I recommend it to everyone.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing misfire.......2006-08-16

I'm a big VR fan, and I found this album a curious disappointment. It lacked the focus, drive, and fire of his previous two releases with Masque. With the exceptions of Flatbush and Church Revisited and Enjoy the Silence, I found the performances and compositions/ arrangements to be weak and uninspired, utterly unlike the live performance I saw shortly before this release. I hope he finds his footing again with the next Masque or LC album.

5 out of 5 stars Vernon Reid is my Favorite Guitarist!!.......2006-05-12

Ok....I have been a huge fan of Living Colour since I was a senoir in High School and I just saw Vernon Reid's solo show last year in London and I was blown away. I love this new album. He even does a cover of Radiohead's "National Anthem." It's really a great cd to have and he puts on an equally great live show.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing CD.......2006-05-10

If you want guitar playing, musicianship and songwriting then this is as good as it gets. Vernon Reid returning to his roots on this CD and it makes for a deep, meaningful album. If you like Living Color you may or may not enjoy this, but you cannot deny the talent and creativity in this CD ...give it time.
