great love songs.......2006-10-30
The Naked Dutch Painter is a perfect song. I rank it up there with Suzanne by Leonard Cohen. Like Cohen, Stew has this word-weary, Euro sound, kind of 60's, kind of intellectual. There's really no one else out there like him.
Finest Songwriting Around.......2005-02-09
What's this one-star "Not all it's cracked up to be" review? S/he's a "music lover"? What kind of music???? I can't tell you how many people I've turned on to Stew's wonderful Naked Dutch Painter CD. The songs are bright and inspired in the great tradition of intelligent pop balladry. Does this so-called "music lover" know what kind of crap is out there that really deserves a one-star? What's a matter, did Stew not tip you enough one night at Denny's?
Storytelling is the true test of a Singer/Songwriter.......2004-03-10
Stew is a storyteller first and a singer/composer second and that is OK because he's decent at that as well. I say decent because if he were any better than he was now than I would have a tough time paying attention to his lyrics and I'd get carried away in the music. The music is occasionally excellent accompaniment, and usually passable, but that's all that it has to be. The stories that he tells are interesting and he knows that the characters he presents are the high points and not his singing voice necessarily. He has no pride when it comes to his songs, at least that's the impression this CD gives me. This is a CD that you truly listen to. One thing that doesn't make sense to me is why there are bleeped out portions on the live tracks and yet he curses on "Naked Dutch Painter." Kind of odd if you ask me. Sometimes the portions where he talks to the audience about why he wrote a song and what it's about is very pertinent to the piece and it helps the CD ease along knowing what he tells you. I haven't listened to any of his music before this album, but this has to be a high point in his career.
Not all it's cracked up to be.......2004-01-24
I'm sure Stew is extremely entertaining Live, and he is a great storyteller/humorist/troubador.
I first heard of Stew in an NPR interview for this CD and was intrigued enough to pick up a copy.
Most of the reviews for this CD must be written by his hard core fans who have seen him perform live and are reliving the experience through the CD.
The lyrics are well thought out, and there is humor that you will enjoy sharing with your drinking buddies once or twice. But, there's no reason to put it in continual rotation on your CD player.
Listen to the samples - musically, they will remind you of a Childrens' record (lyrically, they'll remind you of a locker room).
If you feel you must buy a Stew CD and you aren't already a fan, start out with the first CD - Guest Host, which I feel is a little more commercial and stands up better to repeat listening.
One of my FAVORITE CD's of ALL TIME.......2004-01-03
I enthusiastically urge everyone to get this amazing and unique CD! (as well as any of Stew's, or the Negro Problem's, other discs). The songs are catchy, funny and witty-- my favorite tunes keep changing! If you like this, you're in for a big treat, because his other 6 or 7 cds are filled with gems: a musical gold mine. Stew is my favorite 'active' songwriter.

Customer Reviews:
Leave well enough alone.......2006-06-16
Something was lost in this stripped down version of Rickie Lee Jones favorite songs. Most of the songs were better in their original version. Here they sound plaintive, with only a melancholy ring of their former selves. I suppose she was looking for something deeper, but she had already found it in The Magazine, a beautiful blend of heart felt songs that showed what a great songwriter she is.
Living it up.......2005-10-09
This is a lady of considerable talent, as a unique lyricist, a musician, and fetching expressive vocalist. Ricki Lee Jones' lyrics always capture me with the puzzles she builds, casting her songs with odds and ends of the people in her life, and using slang and insider terms. The lyrics evoke thrown together parties in back street dumps, full of fun and consequences. Her voice has the cracky vulnerable sound of both seduction, hang-over, and mourning.
I gave the CD 4 because I actually like the full recordings with back-up musicians and back-up vocals, but here she collects her finest work and the lyrics come out of the speakers and grab you in this format.
"The Horses" remains one of her most beautiful compositions and makes a strong beginning to this CD. Much like her song "Magazine" the undertone of sadness is broken with a drifting catchy melody.
"It Must be Love" and "Young Blood" certainly come off diferently without all the background musicians supporting the efforts. These fast moving works, like "Living it Up", "We Belong Together", and "Chuck E's in Love", have such a casual live-and-let live lacidasical luster.
"The Last Chance Texaco" has some of the most powerful, clever and revealing lyrics Ricki has written. I found the lyrics to be jam-packed with double and triple meanings.
"Skeletons" remains such a tragic and sad piece of work. Like many of her songs, folks on the edge get by with little but hold together through it all by holding onto each other.
The CD is longer than most CDs as Ricki puts 15 of her best works in non-rushed style all in one package.
a great, very original CD that rewards multiple listenings.......2004-01-13
Naked Songs was my very first experience with Rickie Lee Jones, having been highly recommended by a good friend a few weeks ago. I refrained from starting with the more logical choice of her first album "Rickie Lee Jones," as I suspected that that friend might give me that CD for Christmas (I was right). As a result, it is possibly that my rating is skewed because this is my first contact with R.L.J. and therefore I am rating her against all the other music I've heard, rather than against herself. I cannot speak to the quality of "Naked Songs" in comparison to her other work, but I will say "Naked Songs" is one of the best CDs I've ever heard.
As others have noted, at first I was put off by her voice. Initially, it seemed too loud and a little annoying, but the rhythm of "Young Blood" and the lyrics and melody of "Altar Boy" caught me, and I kept listening. It took a couple of times through the CD, but I have since fallen in love with CD. The more I listen to it, the more I fall in love with other songs that I used to be tempted to skip over and am now instead tempted to put on "repeat." Without a doubt, this is a CD that bears multiple listenings and grows rather than shallows the more you hear it, in my opinion the sign of true quality in a record. Most notably, the songwriting, in terms of both lyrics and music, is incredible throughout.
Rickie Lee Jones is an artist worth looking into. I'm sorry that so few people today seem to have even heard of her. I find myself wanting to make friends sit down and check this CD out. Hopefully you will give her music a chance as well.
uncovered.......2002-05-13
i thought it was funny -that the one star review, the person from Maine, who said that they thought the musicians on this record hadn't practiced. that is probably true, seeing as it's a SOLO record, and there were no other musicians!
uh?
One of the things that are valuable about this recording is that you can hear traces of roots, and that's always fun. I hear little Curtis Mayfield in Youngblood. And the solo interpretation of Flying Cowboys, which was so great with the band, is very moving here on twelve string. all the emotion in the world springing up suddenly, and then the calm, odd, amazing voice just speaks the words. an uncomprimising spirit, this really is naked songs, and not just solo recordings.
Rickie Lee Jones is an acquired taste. So I acquired.......2002-04-13
At first, her little-girl voice can be a bit off-putting--at least I used to think so. Jones herself once commented on the first time she ever heard her own recorded voice in a studio demo; "I sang 'Nights In White Satin' and when they played it back, it sounded like the young Michael Jackson singing 'Nights In White Satin'." But this live set shows that this lady has a gift for songwriting, as well as a gift for choosing offbeat but great cover material to do (such as the finale "Autumn Leaves"). On her "Pop Pop" effort, she does a killer version of the jazz classic "Dat Dere"--I suggest you look that disc up while you're on "dis here" site. But the blockbuster on this album is the gritty "Altar Boy". The one-woman/ one-guitar version of it here, sung in a hushed voice, focuses you more on the lyrics than its original on "Traffic From Paradise", where the scraping pizzicatto strings might tend to get in the way. And it's especially relevant today, given the boom in media coverage of sex abuse by clergy nowadays. So don't let first impressions of Jones fool you--this lady with the childish voice can sing and write with attitude. After all, Neil Young and Tom Waits both have technically horrible voices and look at their stuff. Listen to what she sings instead of how she sings it, and you're more than halfway there.

Customer Reviews:
A solid album, but beware.......2007-05-02
I order this album here recently, and it is a Japanese import, but it's not in a digipak miniature sleeve, and I don't know when this version was released. It is not state of the art remastering; it sounds a bit thin and high-end heavy. It's a standard jewel case with a simple insert that reproduces the original LP cover. A separate insert is a plain white paper folded to a 5X5 that has the lyrics printed in Japanese and English. Looks pretty cheesy but I'm glad to have it. Just beware if you get this version you will probably be disappointed. At this price, I'm not going to reorder it, and I am keeping what I have. Naked Songs is very hard to find on LP, so I'm just going to be satisfied.

Album Description
Recorded mostly in a spare bedroom, "Naked" is the offspring of the music industry's new breed; a modest, accessible pop record made for peanuts. Skip surrounded himself with people he trusted and proceeded to get the sounds he heard in his head onto disc. He tapped first-time producer Jonathan Kingham to produce and The A-Team (Evan Brubaker & Troy Glessner) to mix. Ironically, despite his small town style, "Naked" has a sound that is decidedly urban.
"Naked" fuses drum loops and tight acoustic guitars with pulsing bass lines to deliver songs that make you both forget and remember at once. From the anthemic opening track "You Don't Know Me Anymore" to the soft atmospherics of the title track, Skip shifts effortlessly from an angry dismissal to a subtly suggestive come-on. His voice is the focus of his music, his lyrics a balance between poetry and raw emotion that walks the tightrope of the tragic loss of his daughter; he infuses each song with an energy and intensity that is both compellingly original and achingly familiar. The end result is a musical mash of Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, and Bobby Womack.
Customer Reviews:
"Naked" and Loving It.......2002-12-25
This album is a journey from the first song to the last. There's a power to Skip's lyrics that just grows on you the more you listen. Rarely do you find such a great combination of incredibly powerful messages supported so well with beautiful music. His voice carries clear to your soul. Whether you play "Naked" on a quiet Sunday morning, or crank it up when you're feeling like it - this album speaks to you where you're at. Well worth the money. Check him out live sometime - it's amazing.
further beyond rage.......2002-12-08
Having just been through a breakup myself, I understand the pain Skip is expressing through his poetry and prose. His music, however, does not dwell on pain but is beautiful acoustic pop listening. CD's are never as good as the real thing, however, the real thing doesen't happen every time I get in the mood.
Wonderful CD........2002-12-05
I don't know what this guy in Redmond is saying. Obviously they should keep their opinions to themselves! This record is fantastic. I've seen Skip Peri several times live and this record is wonderful in comparison. I hope Peri continues to make records this intense and moving.
Naked.......2002-11-19
Naked is one of the best albums in my collection. The songs are haunting, the kind you never want to turn off. I rarely am able to listen to such personal lyrics conveyed with such power. It has a place of honor in my car. Skip Peri is a beautiful artist. I highly recommend his work.
Overproduced and Underwhelming.......2002-11-18
Even though I'm a huge fan of Skip Peri, don't buy this CD. You're better off waiting for him to release something worthy of his considerable talents.
This CD could have been so much more than it was. Make no mistake, Skip Peri is one of the Seattle area's best singer/songwriters. In his solo live performances, his impassioned rendition of these original songs is riveting and evocative. However, nearly every drop of Peri's emotion is wrung out of these songs by the overdone production on this album. For those of you that have not seen him live, he is ten times better in person than he is on this disc, and I heartily recommend seeing him live, as I will continue to do.
Hopefully, one day he will release an album that won't have the life produced out of it.
