An excellent and frequently astonishing album, Quadrophenia is both more ambitious and less accessible than Tommy, the first and most well known rock opera. At its simplest level, Quadrophenia is a coming-of-age story with an awesome soundtrack. The album features some of the Who's finest material, in songs like the enraged "Real Me," the cynical "Punk Meets the Godfather," the wistful "5:15" and "Sea and Sand," and the powerful "Love, Reign O'er Me." The songwriting (courtesy of Pete Townshend) is top-notch, as is the production (the Who actually managed to use synthesizers in an original manner, something few rock bands can aspire to). The mix of powerful songwriting and skillful composition makes this one of the Who's finest moments. --Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
The Who's best album...........2007-07-06
This is my favorite Who album, and their last great album. There were moments of brilliance on later albums (most notably Face Dances, the best of the Who's post-Quadrophenia output), but this is the last album where they really were The Who. This is a grand epic that is much more coherent and far more down to Earth than the rather pretentious Tommy. This is Pete Townshend's masterpiece. He wrote all the material (the only Who album in which he did), and I love the credits on the album where it says Townshend plays "remainder". The CD booklet is now restored, with a series of great photos, and the short story that accompanies it. Townshend is a pretty good prose writer, and I would like to see a book or two by him, if he's ever inclined. The synthesizers here work very well, Daltrey's vocals are some of the best of his career, and this is the last Who album where Keith Moon was Keith Moon. He is on fire throughout the entire album. His playing on The Real Me makes puts all modern drummers to shame. The Who would slowly deteriorate after this (drugs, more drugs, the road). This album rarely gets mentioned in the arena of great rock albums, which is horrible, as it is one of the best albums ever made. It's very underrated, and it's my favorite Who album.
Out of my brain on the 5:15.......2007-07-05
I think that this is my favorite Who alblum/CD. It follows up the Rock opera theme from Tommy with a Mods vs. Rockers thing. My favorite tracks 1. 5:15 2. Dr. Jimmy 3. Love Reign over me. I have to admit that I was pulled in by the use of this music in the Adam Sandler/Don Cheadle movie 'Reign over Me'. But hey, I don't smoke cigarettes (any more) because they smoke -em in the movies. It's ok to buy 40 year old music they include in soundtracks.
Better than Tommy!.......2007-06-27
While Tommy is instantly enjoyable, Quadrophenia is the one you will keep coming back to. The music very much reflects the darkness of the story and gives it a timeless feeling. This is one of those discs that your favorite song constantly changes because there are so many good ones. Townshend at his most introspective and for me his best work.
Mods and Sods ( * * * * 1/3).......2007-06-22
Writing this review in June 2007, I realize that I became the fan of The Who that I am now just over one year ago. I am not sure how I managed to keep them on the periphery for so long. I think that I always found several of their best-known songs - such as "Magic Bus", "Squeeze Box", and "Who Are You?" - to be skimpy and uninspired, while albums like Tommy and Quadrophenia seemed self-indulgent and overblown. Who's Next seemed perfect to the point of being the exception that proved the rule, so it was pretty much the only Who CD that I kept around (along with a cassette of greatest hits). Although I will probably always feel the same about the previously mentioned singles, I have recently decided that The Who's two rock operas are more ambitious than self-indulgent, and more fully-realized than overblown.
In 1973, The Who were huge, and not just in terms of popularity. Sure, Quadrophenia was their fourth consecutive top five album in the US. More importantly, however, their musical scope had grown immensely since their debut in 1965. Having finally recorded an entirely consistent record in 1967 with The Who Sell Out, Townshend began to think in terms of expanding the limits of rock 'n roll, rather than working within them. Having done so with Tommy - which made the rock opera respectable - and Who's Next - which did the same for synthesizers - he had plenty of momentum. Still, attempting a second rock opera meant taking quite a chance. (Jethro Tull, another one of the most popular English bands of the early 70s, had recently suffered a severe backlash for releasing two LPs in a row consisting of a single album-length piece.) But as with Tommy, if any band could pull it off, then The Who could.
Quadrophenia, like Tommy, told the tale of a young man struggling with psychological problems. In this case, it is Jimmy, who suffers from a four-way split personality. As a young mod, he very well may have run with the type of guys who would become The Who, and subsequently became a fan of them. Thus, the songs on this album serve not only to tell the story of Jimmy, but of the band itself, as the songs "The Punk and the Godfather" and "Helpless Dancer" reference Who songs which were mod anthems. Jimmy tries desperately to keep up with fashion while living in his parents' house ("Cut My Hair) in order to avoid living one of the workaday lives of those he sees around him ("The Dirty Jobs", "Helpless Dancer"). Eventually, he tires of being disappointed by all the things that he hopes will make him happy ("I've Had Enough"), so he takes trip, literally and figuratively, to the beachside town of Brighton ("5:15").
Alas, he discovers that "here by the sea and sand/nothing ever goes as planned". He hits bottom when he encounters a former mod whom he admired so greatly years before who is now working as a bell boy. Thus, he has to spend each day licking the boots and running at the heels of the authority figures he once rebelled against. Despondent over the idea that what happened to the now bell boy could also happen to him, he sinks into the quicksand of drugs and alcohol ("Dr. Jimmy"), and starts to behave without regard to rules and consequences: "What is it? I'll take it/Who is she? I'll rape it". Quadrophenia ends with Jimmy's fate uncertain, as he stands on the beach in the rain, arms stretched upward to the sky, one imagines ("Love Reign O'er Me").
Musically, Quadrophenia and Tommy have similarities and differences. Both include three instrumentals, but none on Quadrophenia is as long as Tommy's 10-minute "Underture". Tommy features the leitmotifs of "See me, feel me..." and the "Pinball Wizard" chords, and Quadrophenia's songs are tied together by the "love reign o'er me" lyric and the beautiful synthesizer that underscores it. One important difference is that Quadrophenia consists entirely of full-length songs, whereas Tommy included several songs that were less than a minute long. This was also the first album in which Pete Townshend wrote every single song. Although John Entwistle's occasional contributions had always been a nice touch, they certainly aren't missed here. Rather, he concentrates on his bass, which bubbles near the surface of each song and sometimes even boils over. Keith Moon clobbers his drums as usual. Roger Daltrey sounds magnificent on the album's more bombastic numbers, while Townshend sings lead on the album's more tender moments, "Cut My Hair" and "I'm One". Who albums were always group efforts, and Who's Next had found the band performing as rock 'n roll musicians rather than simply players. Quadrophenia continued this trend.
Quadrophenia's story isn't developed quite as well as Tommy, and also not quite as entertaininng or interesting. The songs and the music, however, put it just a notch above their first rock opera. It is a downright majestic piece of work, and although it may be tough to take in a single listen, it is well worth doing so. But even if and when one doesn't, s/he will still find several great Who songs to return to regularly. Although Quadrophenia is not their best album, it does show that The Who were still in brilliant form two years after the release of their masterpiece.

During the '70s, Tommy went from being the Who's finest hour to excessive pop-culture cliché--precisely the sort of bloated musical albatross that fueled the decade's punk and new wave reactionaries. Consequently, director Frank Roddam imbued his 1979 version of Quadrophenia (Pete Townshend's 1973 introspective ode to teen angst set against the English mod versus rocker clashes of the early '60s) with a conscious sense of scale and humanity. Unlike the often embarrassing Tommy film spectacle, the band's musical presence on Quadrophenia is both concise and surprisingly fresh. They contribute three new songs ("Get Out and Stay Out," "Four Faces," "Joker James") that help flesh out the story and cut much of the original material down to its musical and emotional essence. Credit Who bassist/film musical director John Entwistle (who'd no doubt perceived the sharp musical changes just then happening around him) with stripping Quadrophenia down to size, in the process underscoring his thunderous, cascading bass lines; Pete Townshend's slashing power chords; Keith Moon's maniacal drum fills; and Roger Daltrey's vocal power. After Tommy, less was indeed more. --Jerry McCulley

Quadrophenia ~ The Who.......2007-01-12
I bought this CD for my husband. It was not exactly what he expected. He was surprised it was a soundtrack. We both loved the music and various artists on it.
Great sampler.......2006-02-04
I Bought this on cassette in Madrid in 1980 and was completely blown away by it...excpet i at first misstook the wind on I am the sea for tape hiss...anyway this is a great re-mastering (I think, because the sound is cleaner somehow) of the best of the Quadrophenia songs plus a few that were not on the original, as well as some great Mod favourites. There is not one weak song on here.
QUAD SONGS FROM THE SOUNDTRACK.......2005-05-19
Yeah great sound on all these tracks. Its a shame the whole album ain't here,I mean the whole regular album of course. It seems tempting to me to hear beefed up versions of other songs from the original WHO album, like CUT MY HAIR and QUADROPHENIA would have been nice or even the ROCK would have been cool.I must say I don't miss the rest of the movie soundtrack songs by the other artist that where left out with the exception of HI HEELED SNEAKERS by whoever I don't remember. But JOHN'S bass just rock's out on all of these tracks. He will be sorely missed if the band decides to tour again.Losing KIETH was one thing and still calling it THE WHO,but losing JOHN is quite another thing.Well that said this disc has other WHO songs that at the time of release where unheard of(GET OUT AND STAY OUT,JOKER JAMES,AND FOUR FACES)all work well. And of course the 2 openers which date back to the high numbers era are always a blast too.To sum it up THE WHO are the greatest, enjoy
The Who's BEST.......2003-08-03
"Quadrophenia". What can I say? I was late coming to The Who. I won tickets, while I was in high school, to see the home-town premiere of "Tommy" the motion picture. The Stockton Theatre, Stockton, California, 1975. I was 17. I won tickets from my favorite radio station, KJOY, wow! by phone while getting ready to go to school one morning. I was the fifth caller (or whatever). My best friend Brenda and I got super-stoned on a couple of joints of local homegrown and went to see "the premiere". It was like nothing I'd ever seen before. Jesus, did you see Tina Turner? F'ng intense! I was an instant Who fan, for life. "Quadraphenia"? Was something special. I thought it was written for me; a sound track to help me deal with my teen-aged life; to manuever through the rocky shoals of teenhood and early adult-hood. Bless you Pete Townshend. When I read that a movie was made, I checked my local paper daily for a local release date. When I found a listing in my local paper, I cried. Yeah, I cried because this album meant so much to me. I saw it 3 times in the week that it played in Stockton, again at the Stockton Theatre. This album is brilliant. It helped me through so many bad times. Listen and learn, learn to love your life and learn to love the genius of Pete Townshend.
Good Moments But Go With The Original.......2003-05-18
I bought this record back in the early eighties. There are several great songs(Dr. Jimmy, The Real Me, The Punk And The Godfather, 5:15). I also enjoy several of the songs contributed by other artists such as She's So Fine, Da Do Run Run, and Be My Baby.
However the new who tracks Four Faces, Joker James, and Get Out And Stay Out are inferior additions when they replace missing tracks like Cut My Hair, Drowned, The Rock, and The Dirty Jobs. Also cutting only 34 seconds of Helpless Dancer is oh so annoying. What is the point please?
If you like the early sixties at the end of the CD, you might want to pick this version up. Otherwise go with the all Who Quadrophenia.

In my opinion this is superior to "Tommy". A truly breathtaking adventure in the lifes of mods and rockers(which did exist in england). Townshend has put together a powerful album. The Mobile Fidelity GOLD CD is the topper.

P.S. Must be listened to at maximum volume!

OK it is the same record that most Who fans have but at the time it came out in thie edition, the sound was still somewhat better than the horrible standard CD you could find. Too expensive though.

The Second Rock Opera.......2004-11-17
1972-Here we find guitarist Peter Townshend coming up with another brilliant rock opera about a young boy named Jimmy in 'Mod' times, who takes heavy doses of speed (don't ever try it) and is kicked out of his own house. The album was released in 1973 and reached #2 in the charts, being prevented from reaching #1 by Elton Johns "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, incidentally on the same label.
1985-Here we find MCA releasing Quadrophenia on CD, which is the one featured here. Released as MCAD2-6895/DIDX-351/2 (mine is DIDY-351/2). This was released as a two disc set in two seperate jewel cases (unlike the new version that is a double jewel case). This version is currently out of print and is hard to find. Look for this version anyways if you want a challenge. It took me about 3 years to find this version!! If you just want it now, get it here, or get the new version

Quadrophenia - The Most Commonly Overlooked Who Record.......2006-04-22
Pete Townshend is a genius. This album can be interpreted any way you like - as a suicide story, a coming-of-age tale or just a jumble of events that reach a beautiful, however LOUD, climax.
There is not enough room on the whole Internet to give Quadrophenia all the credit it deserves. Musically, it is simply amazing. Upon first hearing, the two instrumental tracks, "Quadrophenia" and "The Rock" could be mistaken as identical, however the latter is a much more complex, shattering piece, with two overdubbed time signatures so that with each repeated playing, the listener gains something from the track - there is always something new to listen for. At exactly one minute, twenty-four seconds into the track, four tiny piano notes punctuate the "Is It Me?" section; absolutely heartbreaking every time. Special mention should also be made of John's french horn in the "Love, Reign O'er Me" part (4:54 into the track) - amazing.
But enough of "The Rock". Pete's original idea was to present to the world an opera concerned with the history of the band. Hence, an aspect of Jimmy's "quadrophenic" personality is allotted to each member, and each has his own musical theme. "Helpless Dancer" (Roger) is a dramatic, angry attack on the hierarchy of the postwar English workplace; "Bellboy" (Keith) is an amusing document of the Mods/Rockers skirmishes on the south coast which led to the eventual demise of the Mod movement (not too sure about Keith's vocal parts, though); "Is It Me?" (John) is a beautifully sung plea for identity tucked away amidst the violent, frighteningly powerful "Doctor Jimmy"; and...
"Love, Reign O'er Me", Pete's theme. Shattering. The first time I heard this I wasn't sure whether to scream, vomit or just die; I was overwhelmed. The most amazing piano introduction (Pete - not Chris Stainton or even The Great Nicky Hopkins), beautiful, orchestral synth work (PT again), Roger's helpless scream, before, finally, an explosion of noise from The Who's brass and percussion sections fades into a poignant silence - does Jimmy die or doesn't he?
The prog. rock style of Quadrophenia, however, is not for everybody. For recent Who converts, I would still recommed Tommy over any other of the band's works. For many longtime fans, however, the "spiritual journey" and the relationship that everybody feels with Jimmy at some point in their lives is what makes Quadrophenia so timeless and likeable.
Finally, the actual recording aside, this album is priceless simply for the beautiful packaging. The front cover idea, conceived by Roger, shows a Parka-clad Jimmy, his back turned, with the band's four faces reflected in the mirrors of his Vespa GS. Inside is more handsome black-and-white photography depicting his home life, target sweaters, ivy league stripes and, of course, Brighton Beach; and a showcase of Pete's additional flair for writing - truly, as Ken Russell put it thirty years ago, "a modern Shakespeare".
Incredible Album By One Of The Greatest Bands Ever..........2005-09-12
In my opinion "Quadrophenia" is one of the best rock albums you've never heard. A few singles make it onto radio now and then, but in my opinion this is one of their best efforts ever and is much better than "Tommy".
"Quadrophenia" digs much deeper into the psyche of Pete Townshend, and inside the liner notes the record is dedicated "to the kids of Goldhawk Road, Carpenders Park, Forest Hill, Stevenage New Town and to all the people", so you know the record is personal and filled with meaning. Passion and power fill this record and drive the lyrics home.
"The Real Me" rips it open and wakes up the listener to what's taking place. "Cut My Hair" delivers the strongest track, showing the inner turmoil going on in the narrator's head. The next tracks, "The Punk And The Godfather" and "I'm One" show the aspiration and attention sought by the voices on this album.
"Drowned", "Doctor Jimmy" and "The Rock" bring it to a frantic crescendo, with "Love, Reign O'er Me" taking it home in almost operatic style.
This literally is one of the best records I've heard and certainly would be on the stranded island list.

The way the sdtk should be.......2000-03-01
The Motown side and non Who stuff were lousy. The CD in the US thankfully has just The Who songs. John rerecorded all his bass parts with an Alembic bass. The three new Who tracks with Kenney Jones on drums sans Four Faces which has Keith Moon on the drums are good too.
The Definitive Version?.......1999-12-29
The reviews posted to this release all concern the May 94 edited soundtrack for the Quad film which Amazon offers at a reasonable price for a single CD. By the way, there is a Japanese double CD release that includes all the material on the original soundtrack LP.
On the other hand, the limited edition import is part of the 12 CD Who series from Polydor in Japan (POCP 92001/2). As a double CD it costs more, but has the extra touches expected in the Japanese series, such as the miniture cardboard LP cover, and a section from a Who discography. Whether this is worth the extra cash probably depends on how fanatically a collector the reader is.
How to rate the music on the Who's second rock opera remains a struggle as it has since its release in Nov 73. The opening storm can sound like The 101 Strings Orchestra instead of the brash band of Can't Explain or Pinball Wizard. The band puts any fears to rest very quickly as it hits 11 on the amps very quickly--and stays there for most of the album. Therein is the problem: Was this a studio effort that the band hoped would quickly translate to a road show as a replacement for Tommy? For technical reasons, that didn't happen. (Personally, I think the band gave up on it too quickly when touring in 73.) Despite some amazing tracks, the relentless balls out approach deprives the album of variation to make the overall sound more interesting. Just listen to Sell Out or Who's Next (Both 5 stars in my book.) in contrast.
That said, Quad is one glorious wall of sound that other bands can only dream about. Even if it failed to turn into an instant replacement for the earlier rock opera, Quad has too many excellent songs to be rated less that 4 stars. Understandable why many 'younger' Who fans rate it as their favorite, Quad also gave notice to older fans that Pete wasn't about return to three minute pop masterpieces. One interesting puzzle that hangs over Quadrophenia: What changes would Kit Lambert have advised if he had remainded Pete's foil at the time of this recording?
Quad can't be ignored, but ultimately doesn't have the warmth and ready access of The Who's very best work, so it just misses out on a fifth star. Essential all the same for any serious rock fan.
Remastered Quadrophenia songs have more oomph........1999-11-23
The omission of the Motown songs is no great loss to me. In fact, I don't even care about the film so much. But the remastered versions of the Quad songs are _much_ ballsier than the originals. This is due to bassist John Entwistle re-recording the bass parts with an eight-string bass, wiping some superfluous keyboard parts, and restoring some great Keith Moon drum parts. Thus, "5:15" sounds like the hit it should have been, and "Bell Boy", "Doctor Jimmy", and "The Punk Meets the Godfather" are even more dramatic than before. The only miscues are his decision to fade "Love Reign O'er Me" instead of using the gong ending, and using a conventional ending for "The Real Me" instead of the "me-ME-me-ME-me" vocal ending. An optional purchase for casual fans, but a solid pick for real Who-heads.
We are the mods!.......1999-08-06
The film Quadrophenia and the album were catylysts for a whole new generation of mods (myself included 4 years ago) in Great Britain during the late Seventies and now again in the late 90's. I would recommend any fan of this album visiting one of the UK's mod events (scooter rallies or musical evenings) and would also advise getting hold of the live recording of Quadrophenia at Hyde park in London which features Phil Daniels as the voice of Jimmy.
Saudades do vinil.......1999-05-01
Ok, isto já é demais! O disco deveria ser encarado como trilha sonora e acaba sendo um "quadrophenia" (assim mesmo, caixa baixa) reduzido. O original, pelo menos, continha James Brown e Booker "T" & the MG's.

This album is simply their best, they where all in their best musical moment. You will be able to appreciate the best drums ever played by a band on this album, their guitar and vocals... simply outstanding.
