Van Morrison reputedly wasn't crazy about the idea of a greatest-hits package, and this set's haphazard programming--which leaps from period to period, style to style, tossing in two key singles by his mid-'60s band Them--speaks to his lack of involvement. Still, it rivals Moondance as Morrison's most popular album, and for a reason: like that classic, it offers one deeply soulful, spiritually and musically thoughtful track after another. Much of his more "difficult" work is ignored here; in fact, Best of... gives us an intriguing picture of a Van who's almost eager to please. --Rickey Wright --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Navigating Van Morrison's extensive catalog since 1993 is a formidable task even diehard fans might not want to attempt. The Irish icon has flirted with blues, jazz, country, pop, Celtic, and his own style of indescribable into-the-mystic spiritually-oriented poetic folk on his numerous releases, making for quite a thorny culling assignment. So the EMI brass were probably ecstatic when the singer took the job himself. He weeds through a dozen or so albums released since Volume 2's mile-marker, and adds a clutch of previously unavailable mixes, rarities, and live tracks. The result: a nearly two-and-a-half-hour, 31-track double-disc set as sprawling, eclectic, and tenacious as Morrison's vision and discography. From occasionally rambling but spirited duets with veterans Bobby "Blue" Bland, Junior Wells, Georgie Fame, Lonnie Donegan, B.B. King, the Chieftains, Ray Charles, and even Tom Jones to concert versions of hits such as "Moondance" and an impressive take on Sinatra's classic "That's Life," along with hidden gems like "Steal My Heart Away," this is a beautifully assembled and sequenced collection. It presents most of this multitalented auteur's facets and softens his often crusty exterior by showing his appreciation for the journeymen that helped develop the trail that Morrison then blazed in his own distinctive style. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

The new 2-CD collection, compiled by Morrison himself, offers a comprehensive overview of his later material. The set's 31 tracks include previously unreleased collaborations with Tom Jones and Bobby Bland, as well as duets with John Lee Hooker, B.B. King and Ray Charles.

4 out of 5 stars Great selection.......2007-07-12

I won't call this definitive, but the collection's got some previously unreleased and seldom heard numbers that merit the price and hype. This is a very listenable CD that's something you can just stick in the changer and let it play. Definitely worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Continuing writers block.......2007-07-10

Despite having most of this already I paid out my money and what did I get? A reasonable overview with some obscurities, one of which "Blue and Green" is worth the cost on its own. While the music is all first class the compiling has created some jarring between tracks. I've always loved The Skiffle Sessions album but Lost John between Leaves Come Falling Down and Tupelo Honey sounds bizarre. Nearly all the tracks he has re-recorded are done better in their original incarnation and one gets the feeling that with this, the movie "best of" and the country abomination Pay The Devil before them that he has nothing to say at present. I love Morrison's music and sincerely hope there is more of it to come, its now been a fair number of years since there has been an album of original material and he is overdue for his muse to return.

5 out of 5 stars The Legend Continues..........2007-07-04

This 'Best Of' is a must for any Vanatic (Van fan)... but more importantly it is a must for anyone who thinks Van's career ended in the 1970s... all the tracks on "Vol. 3" are from 1993-2005 - Van's later writing and singing are well represented on this compilation and with a superb supporting cast of John Lee Hooker, Ray Charles, Tom Jones, Carl Perkins, Lonnie Donegan, Bobby "Blue" Bland and the great Georgie Fame as they come along for the journey...

Van is still a mighty force in a world that needs more soul and less pop.

5 out of 5 stars Rock the gypsy in your soul.......2007-07-03

An amazing compilation of Van Morrison's enchanting and haunting melodies. Although I am not a big jazz or blues fan, he has managed to put those two elements together in a way that is a lyrical treat. The melodies are addictive and very catchy. As he has matured, his renditions of some of his earlier works are performed now with more conviction, passion, and confidence than ever before. Van is an extremely talented musician and lyricist that successfully impacts music for the ages. I could listen to Van Morrison 24/7.

5 out of 5 stars Ancient Highway.......2007-06-29

Van is his element, you won't hear this almost 9 min track on
any broadcast radio station in the US.
I have quite a few of the tracks on other albums over 60% but
didn't hesitate on this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Van the man..........2007-06-22

There's no organization to the music on this cd which has always been one of the great joys of a Van Morrison release where one song seems to lead to another and the sound as a whole is like listening to one inspiring arrangement but even with that in mind this collection is wonderful. Rather then having one large spiritual experience, you get 20 small spiritual miracles. Because to me, Van's music has always been so full of soul it is like a spiritual ride.

5 out of 5 stars Always a writer of songs ...it's raining and i have this on..........2007-01-27

These are awesome..good album.

I like them as much as Philosopher's Stone, In the Midnight, Precious Time, Back on Top, When the Leaves Come Falling Down.....Rain check, These Dreams of You, Golden Autumn Day, Reminds Me of You, High Summer....opps there is my favorites list.

I'd recommend listening to Van. He's a poet. He's able to say what I'm thinking. And I'm going to see him one day because I have a ticket to go to an upcoming concert....like his concerts.Glad he comes to LA. So this is just a CD to get me in the mind frame. But even without that I'd listen to these. I guess I can IPOD my favorites now....

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL.......2006-11-10

This is my favorite CD ever. I have bought it for many friends as gifts, and they all love it! He is the best!

5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2006-08-14

I had this disc once before and it was stolen. Loved it so much I had to buy it again. I wish it cotained Tupelo Honey and Into the Mystic. Other than that I love this disc . I recommend this to anyone. Whether you are a big fan or just only know a couple of his songs. Lively and uplifting. Great for traffic jams.

4 out of 5 stars Wondering why they call this guy Van the Man?.......2006-07-15

Then you obviously don't own this CD. Fix that sometime soon. Any album with Brown Eyed Girl and a bunch of crappy songs is still worth a purchase, but you get lots more: Three good songs by Them (garage-band anthem Gloria, Baby Please Don't Go, Here Comes the Night) and several great songs by Van himself: the aforementioned Brown Eyed Girl, Sweet Thing, Moondance, And It Stoned Me, Domino, Jackie Wilson Said, Cleaning Windows and the previously-unreleased Wonderful Remark especially stand out, though there's more.
Still, it's not perfect. I don't care how popular Have I Told You Lately is, I don't like it. In my mind it's a sap-fest from someone who isn't really sappy. Same with Queen of the Slipstream. Get rid of these two, as well as Dweller on the Threshold and Warm Love. Swap in Madame George and Caravan. Then you'll have the true Best of Van Morrison.

Compiled by Morrison himself, this 1993 collection focuses mainly on his work from 1984-1991. Representing a period during which Morrison scored very few popular hits, the majority of the record's 15 tracks are probably fairly obscure to people other than diehard fans. Nevertheless, this is a vital introduction to Morrison's later, more idiosyncratic material. Many of the songs are marked by an intense, spiritual longing and deal on a very mature level with Morrison's quest for religious fulfillment. For instance, "Real Real Gone" (from 1990's Enlightenment) and "In the Garden" (from 1986's No Guru, No Method, No Teacher) play like an inspired hybrid of gospel and Irish folk music. Somewhat inexplicably, Morrison also includes two songs from his mid-'60s group Them, a cover of John Lee Hooker's "Don't Look Back" and a cover of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue." --Ian Landau

3 out of 5 stars Best of Van Morrison Vol 2.......2005-08-09

It was fine-for the two songs that were worthwhile!

5 out of 5 stars spiritual journey.......2005-03-12

This album leaves contempory gospel in its wake.Van alone knows he has to put his heart where his mouth is.This is an intensely beautiful spiritual journey, from the mystical Coney Island to the deeply moving, When will I learn to live in God.Subtlety and sublime : In the Garden. The album would be worth the money for these tracks alone

4 out of 5 stars This is a great album.......2005-03-07

WARNING: the music that Morrison played in the 1980's is different from his 70's music. Fans of that period may not like this period as much. Personally, I prefer his 80's albums (and hate the 90's stuff)

This compilation is an overview of Morrison's music with his new record company from 1984 to 1991. His previous 1980's Warner Brothers albums - Common One, Beautiful Vision and Inarticulate Speech of the Heart - aren't represented here (the best tracks from these underrated albums would make a cool compilation).

This isn't really a 'best of' album as it misses radio friendly songs like 'Tore Down A La Rimbaud', 'Ivory Tower', Youth of 1,000 Summers' and 'Someone Like You'. Also, four songs from this period are on Best Of Vol. 1. (which is a very poorly sequenced compilation of brilliant songs - for every great song another deserving song is missing).

This wonderful collection, with songs selected by Morrison himself (a maximum of 2 songs from each album), has only a few minor mistakes that are easily fixed with the CD player programme mode.

The first 5 songs are great and the sequencing is perfect. The sixth song, 'I'll Tell Me Ma' from Irish Heartbeat - his Irish album -seems out of place. After the 2 previous slower songs an uptempo song is needed, but a jaunty Irish jig isn't it. The next song, track seven, the poetic 'Cony Island', also doesn't fit. Here, the song is sequenced close to two other 'poetry pieces' - track five 'A Sense of Wonder' and track nine 'Rave on John Donne'. Perhaps it's too much poetry in too short a time frame. Because of this the track doesn't shine like it did on the Avalon Sunset album where it seems *much* prettier. On the original tape of Best Of 2 this song was at the end of side 1. Now it's just stuck in the middle of the disc.

The next 2 songs are great, especially the live and extended version of 'Rave On John Donne'; he may flub a line and his sax solo isn't the best (I an not a big fan of his sax SOUND) but the band is great and, after he introduces them, I wish the song went on longer.

Next up is the other mistake: 2 songs from his band Them. These are cover versions, aren't compatable with the rest of the allbums sound and aren't among the band's, or his, best work.

The remainder of the album is great. The song 'One Irish Rover' was a revelation to me. It's from his No Guru, No Method, No Teacher album. I must have listened to side one of that album the most (think vinyl) or didn't appreciate the song because it was burried at the end of that long album, but in the context of Best Of Vol. 2 it really shines and seems a much more powerful song.

The song 'Hymns To The Silence' is worth the price of admission and justifies this purchase. The style and sound of that song fits in perfectly with the other songs on this collection. The original album of the same name is a 2 disc collection of gospel, blues and jazz that I really dislike (God knows, I've tried to like it). Personally, I think that Hyms To The Silence is the only GREAT song on that entire double album. Get it here and save the cost of a double CD.

The last song on the album, 'Evening Meditation' is really nice, but it sounds better on the original album as track 3 and not burried at the end of an album as it is here. Side 1 of A Sense Of Wonder is one of my favorite Morrison sides because it was the first Morrison album (think vinyl) I ever bought.

To summarize, when I put on this disc I edit out tracks 6&7 and 10&11; all of the tracks fall into place perfedtly. If I want to hear more at the end I don't play 'Evening Meditation' and put on side 1 of A Sense of Wonder.

This is a great album of his under appreciated 80's work.

5 out of 5 stars OBSCURE BUT BEAUTIFUL.......2003-10-28

What this album lacks in cohesion is compensated for by its charming stylistic variety. The two cover versions Don't Look Back and It's All Over Now Baby Blue stand out because they do not overtly reflect Morrison's contemplative side and they date from an earlier era, but they are beautiful and moving too.

The other songs are music of deep spiritual yearning in various styles. These include the catchy pop of Real Real Gone, the spoken poetry and social commentary of Rave On John Donne, the poignant childhood reminiscing of Coney Island, the gentle, evocative strains of Sense Of Wonder and the engaging gospel sounds of Hymns To The Silence.

I would have also expected to find the track Be Thou My Vision from the Hymns album here, as it is a passionately numinous listening experience but the artist was the compiler and this selection is his personal choice.

The fact that these tracks are relatively obscure only enhances the listening experience, proving that some of Van's least commercially successful work has grown in stature down the years and that his output has been consistently excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Volume 2 is mostly a "magical mystical tour".......2002-07-17

Wonderful music from Van "the Man" - and I agree with other reviews that it does provide an excellent introduction to Van's music from the 1ate 1970's - 1980's period. I loved his volume one greatest hits, but of the two, I actually prefer to listen to Voume 2. "Real Real Gone" is a great track, much like some of the more famous hits from Volume 1 and I do like the two songs from "Them" but it is Van's mystical, spiritual music on this album that I rate as Van's very best stuff. "Coney Island's" calming music provides a background for Van's prose and this is a delight no matter how many times it is played. This song is followed by the wonderful "Enlightment" - from the opening chords that remind me of the dawning of a new day to the end of this song, we hear beautiful music and the yearnings of a poet in search of the meanings of life. "Rave on John Donne/Rave on Part Two" captures Van live at the gran Opera House in Belfast - great song. I like all of the tracks on this album, and the fact that I haven't heard them so much through the years is actually a plus (Brown-Eyed Girl was one of my favorite songs as a teenager, but I have heard it SOOOO many times, you know?) Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars WARNING: Not a Real Van Compilation.......2006-09-07

If you're looking for an intro to Van the Man, don't start here. There is no Moondance, no And It Stoned Me, no Sweet Thing, no Madame George (at least not the familiar version), no Cypress Avenue, no Domino, no Tupelo Honey, no Wild Night, no Jackie Wilson Said, no Gloria. Essentially, this is an excuse for Bang Records to cash in on Brown-Eyed Girl. These tapes have been reissued over and over again in a million different formats since their original release in 1968. The REAL best of Van Morrison, twenty songs long and containing all of the aforementioned songs but Tupelo Honey plus a few more, makes for a good intro, plus Astral Weeks is nothing short of mindblowing and Moondance is good. Buy those instead.
