5 out of 5 stars Classic Heart!.......2007-05-07

While this album was not met with critical acclaim, it still ranks as one of my all time favorite Heart albums. I was glad to once again add it to my collection. I think I still have the vinyl!

3 out of 5 stars The End of an Era for Heart.......2007-01-16

When this record came out in 1980 it ushered in a new era for Heart. The hard rocking lead guitars, lush vocal harmonies and mellotron of the first 3 albums were gone. The mature writing and dynamics of the impressive and inspiring "Dog and Butterfly" album also disappeared. Instead we get one step forward and two steps backwards.

This record has some strong cuts, like "Even it Up", "Strange Night", "Bebe Le Strange" and "Rockin' Heaven Down". All are well-composed, well-played songs - more blantantly commercial than the band had done before, but very enjoyable to listen to. There are also some tracks that just don't succeed - like "Break" and "Down on Me". The former being a fast paced wordy "vent" and the latter being a derivative, albeit competently performed blues track. These two tracks strike me as the real downers on the record - it's kind of like finding a fly or hair on your steak in a restaurant - one or two little things are so bad they affect the entire experience of the record. They aren't terrible songs, but they just don't fit in. "Raised on You" is reminiscent of a Christine McVie Fleetwood Mac track and "Pilot" is a nice acoustic composition. "Sweet Darlin'" is a nice ballad.

This CD is for fans only, and even as a fan I often find myself skipping around a bit. The album sold pretty well due to the hits "Bebe Le Strange" and "Even it Up", but the group started losing its fan base at this time and the worse was yet to come. After perfecting such a unique sound from 1976 through 1979, the regression of the band on this disc is jaw-dropping and I defy anyone to listen to "Dog and Butterfly" - the previous record and think that this is some kind of natural progression - regression would be the right term, but that's insulting to the band's first records. If you are a Heart fan you probably already have this CD. If you aren't, save your money and buy "Dreamboat Annie", "Little Queen" or "Dog and Butterfly".

The liner notes are basically worthless - no mention of any of the band turmoil that surrounded the recording sessions, no reflections on the recording - just a few quick comments on the tracks. There is a quote from Nancy Wilson mentioning the impending march of the souless corporate rock era that started to envelope the music industry. I'd say that era started with this release. The bonus track "Jackleg Man" sounds like "Break Pt.II" and it's good that it was left off the original album. Oh, and we also get a live version of "Break"...

5 out of 5 stars SEATTLE'S OWN HEART ENTERS THE EIGHTIES WITH ANOTHER GREAT ALBUM!.......2006-12-29

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece album entitled "BEBE LE STRANGE" by one of Seattle, Washington's great pride and joy's and own daughter's, the legendary great HEART! This album was originally released in 1980 on vinyl/LP and cassette on the Epic Records label in association with CBS Inc. I purchased the original release of this album on CD and the matrix or ID number is EK 36371. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

Again, What can I say about this legendary album and the legendary great band that recorded it all those years ago! Rock n' Roll was going through some major changes! As we all know, 1980 would be the year that the mighty Led Zeppelin's career would come to an end due to Drummer and founder John Bonham's sudden death in September! HEART, on the other hand, STILL had something to prove! HEART contained one of Rock's GREATEST female voices that would have made their ancestor's such as Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Stevie Nicks extremely proud! Every single great female Rocker would give us some of the finest moments in Rock n' Roll history! Janis would give us "Me and Bobby McGee," Grace Slick would give us "White Rabbit" and Stevie Nicks would give us "Rhiannon!" Its only appropriate that HEART or Ann Wilson would give us "Rockin' Heaven Down!" It would also be on the fifth album that sister's Ann and Nancy Wilson would finally let loose and deliver one of the greatest rock anthems in the whole history of Rock n' Roll! In my opinion, "BEBE LE STRANGE" is an outstanding and brilliant album! Every single song track in this album is great!

I will list and briefly review all the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Bebe Le Strange," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great HEART ROCKER! This song kicks a*s! I love Ann's angelic yet strong and powerful Lead Vocals in this Rocker! I love the musical arrangements in this Rocker! Great song!) (2.) "Down On Me," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great HEART slow Rocker! This sounds like a song that Janis, Grace and Stevie would sing! Ann sings this number with such beauty and grace that she'll have you grasping for air and begging for more! I love it!) (3.) "Silver Wheels," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great slow HEART number! I love the acoustic guitar arrangements in this song! A beautiful Nancy Wilson acoustic number indeed!) (4.) "Break," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great HEART ROCKER! This song kicks a*s as well! Ann really lets loose and belts out this song to the MAX! I love this song dearly!) (5.) "Rockin' Heaven Down," (A GREAT HEART ROCKER ANTHEM! ONE OF HEART'S GREATEST AND ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS IN ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY! THIS SONG KICKS SOME SERIOUS A*S! Ann Wilson's blistering merciless Lead Vocals sound so beautiful and raw that she opens and splits the heavens in order for the gods to hear this Rocker! I love this song so dearly!) (6.) "Even It Up," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great HEART ROCKER! Ann lets loose on this number as well! What a great Rocker in deed!) (7.) Strange Night," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great HEART ROCKER! I love the electric guitar riff arrangements in this one! The music blends beautifully and perfectly with Ann's blistering and merciless Lead Vocals! Another song I love so dearly!) (8.) "Raised On You," (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great HEART ROCKER! This sounds like Nancy Wilson singing this song, am I wrong? You almost can't tell them apart! Either way, Nancy's voice sounds angelic and beautiful as well! This song kicks a*s and Rocks! I love it!) (9.) "Pilot" (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great slow HEART ROCKER! I love the acoustic arrangements in this number! If there was a female angel in heaven that sings with such grace and beauty, it would sound like Janis Joplin. It would also sound like Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks and Ann Wilson! If you were to add all four of these combinations together, you would have ONE HELL OF A SINGER! Forgive me for forgetting many of today's great female artists! There are many that deserve to be mentioned as well!) and (10.) "Sweet Darlin." (Outstanding! Brilliant! Superb! Another great mellow HEART number! Ann sings this song with such emotion that she shakes this song to its foundations! Another great song I love so dearly! A great song indeed!) I apologize deeply for not reviewing the last two bonus tracks in the newly Remastered Recording series! I promise to review them ASAP so please bear with me and stay tuned. Overall, THIS IS ONE HELL OF AN ALBUM! Every single song track in this album is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!

As you can see, this is definitely a treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable part of his or her personal music collection. This priceless gem will always be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, The HEART legend doesn't end here either! If anything, IT IS STILL ONLY THE BEGINNING! Heart has persevered and has still continued to entertain us with their own blend of their special magic which has lasted to this very day! I know for fact and I feel confident that HEART WILL ALWAYS BE HERE IN ROCK N' ROLL TO STAY, NO MATTER WHAT! A job well done! Again, Here's to you Ann and Nancy and to the bandmembers too! Keep persevering! Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. HEART RULES! Long Live Rock n'Roll! Rock out always and take care. Forever in Rock, J.L.

5 out of 5 stars Bebe Le Rocks.......2006-11-30

What can I tell you. Heart has been my favorite band since their debut album, Dreamboat Annie came out. Well we lost a member in time to record this album. Original guitarist Roger Fisher pulled the last straw with the band in Oregon while touring under Dog & Butterfly. Much like the Fleetwood Mac relationships that tore that band apart: Michael (drums), Roger (guitar) and Nancy were all apart of the original line-up being less one member. They soldiered ahead and delivered.

This album is probably the most ROCKIN album they have ever released. Not their best album but certainly in the top four albums of their career.

I saw the tour, bought the shirt, recorded the live broadcast from Ft. Worth off the radio back in the days of it's initial release.

This album smokes. For those of you looking to make your own best of CD taking song from all the albums they have ever released, the songs you must include from this album are:

Bebe Le Strange
Down On Me
Silver Wheels
Rockin' Heaven Down
Even It Up
Pilot
Sweet Darlin'

Not to ditch the other tracks. Certainly a special mention for Strange Night.

As a true Heart fan, essential CD's to own are unquestionably:

Dog & Butterfly
Dreamboat Annie
Little Queen
Magazine
Bebe Le Strange
Desire Walks On

Alot of people mention Brigade as one of there very best albums. Well speaking from someone who has been loyal since day one, I have to say Brigade is the album I listen to the least. That whole 80's thing with Heart was good, but not great. Too commercial, Heart kinda lost their way a little in the 80's (yet that was the most successful time of their career. Outside songwriting, seasoned musicians (Ann, Nancy and Howard were the only ones left from the original six member band in the eighties) and too much polish lead Heart away from the raw rockin' and airy beauty of the original line-ups compositions.

Any way you stack it up, 70's, 80's, 90's and since, Heart have givin the world something very special and original. No one has or will ever do what they did.

Here is what baffles me more than anything, The Pretenders are in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame and Heart is not. I throw my hands in the air and scratch my head on that one.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Heaven Down.......2006-04-14

Bebe Le Strange is one of Heart's strongest albums. While only garnering gold status,it is a true rock success, with very solid and entertaining material. Now in this new package it is offered with two added gems, "Jackleg Man", and a live version of "Break". Nancy really shines on this record with her instrumental "Silver Wheels", and "Raised On You", while Ann gets down and dirty with "Rockin' Heaven Down", "Break" "Strange Night", "Bebe", and "Down On Me". "Even It Up", the album's single is not one of my favorites, but is also a true rocker. "Sweet Darlin'" and "Pilot" are beautiful ballads that are performed as only Heart can and will fill you with sheer bliss. This album is a must have for any Heart fan.

4 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars - Heart begins their forgotten transitional era.......2005-04-17

Bebe Le Strange (1980.) Heart's fifth album.

By 1979, Heart had released four albums. On every album, they demonstrated excellent musical ability and diversity. They were one of the few bands of the day that could do both hard rockers and folksy tunes, and practically everything in between. But with the transition from the seventies to the eighties, the music industry was fast changing. Many of the classic seventies rock bands attempted to change with the times - and very few succeded. Following the transition between the times, Heart basically disappeared from the charts (although they'd resurface in a big way about half way through the decade.) Read on for my review of Bebe Le Strange, Heart's first album of the eighties.

As my review title states, this is first Heart's transitional album between two periods. And accordingly, you get plenty of diversity here. There is plenty of classic seventies-style rock that you had come to expect from the band in that decade, along with some of the folksy tunes. But what really makes this album stand out is the new elements that the band incorporated into their sound starting on this album. Nancy Wilson's guitar playing here is faster and more aggressive than what you had heard on earlier albums - the guitar work here is comparable to that of many of the early punk rock bands that were popular in the day and age. This, in many ways, serves as a premonition of the band's popular mid-late eighties material. This album's diversity is arguably its greatest strength. Unfortunately, though, the album was not one of the band's more popular releases, and the album never achieved the same kind of popularity as, say, Dreamboat Annie or the band's 1985 self-titled smash. The two albums that followed this one up gained even less popularity and are relatively unknown. This album marks Heart's entry into a new decade - and it didn't get half the audience it deserved.

Three of Heart's classic albums - Little Queen, Dog And Butterfly, and Bebe Le Strange all got remastered and rereleased. And the new versions of the albums feature expanded liner notes, track-by-track commentary, and even some rare bonus tracks! Do yourself a favor - if you don't have the albums yet, get the remasters.

Bebe Le Strange was the beginning of a new age for Heart, and despite it not being one of the band's larger commercial successes, it was still a very strong release. Although I wouldn't recommend this album for a fan who was just getting into the band, I would certainly recommend it to any tried and true Heart fan.

3 out of 5 stars not bad.......2004-03-27

This is a nice album. Unlike what others said, it is not the best album ever made and it isn't even the best Heart album. This is Heart's fifth album and is probably their fifth best. I don't see how anyone could compare this to the monster Dreamboat Annie, or even Dog and Butterfly.

This album has three very good songs. Sweet Darlin' is a cross between rock and folk, which Heart does just about as good as anyone. Straight Night is a good straight ahead rocker-something that Heart does well sometimes, and sometimes not so well. Down On Me is a blues number, which is really a new area for Heart. It is always good to see a group explore and experiment and be successful at it. They should have continued doing more of this.

Raised On You is one of the few songs from the first five albums with Nancy on lead vocals. It sounds as if the band is trying to copy Fleetwood Mac (Christine McVie), with a little Grateful Dead (Donna Godcheaux thrown in). Nancy would eventually become the center piece of the band as Ann would gain wait and Heart went after the MTV crowd.

The rest of the songs are mediocre to bad. Bebe le Strange and Even It Up sound just like any other rocker Heart did on the first 4 albums.

Note that Roger Fischer left the group just before this album. His departure does seem to have a little impact on this album. His absence will really be felt in later albums. I always hated him. What was he doing with Nancy, when I wanted the Wilson sisters all to myself.

5 out of 5 stars Heart: BEBE LE STRANGE (1980).......2004-01-04

In 1979, Heart went through a lineup configuration, where they had fired Roger Fisher from the band. The band's lineup now features only: ANN WILSON (Lead and Backing Vocals), NANCY WILSON (Vocals, Acoustic & Electric Guitars), HOWARD LEESE (Keyboards, Electric Guitars, Backing Vocals), STEVE FOSSEN (Bass), & MICHAEL DEROISER (Drums), and then signed with Epic Records, after leaving Portrait Records. In February of 1980, Heart released their fifth album entitled, BEBE LE STRANGE, the album that most fans would agree to be Heart's last greatest album. Well, this album is incredible, but it is certainly not their last greatest album.

BEBE LE STRANGE
The first single from the album. This is a great hard rocking tune. I enjoyed seeing them peform this live on VH1 Classic on their 2006 concert. Ann still has that incredible voice.

DOWN ON ME
Not bad.

SILVER WHEELS (Instrumental)
Not bad.

BREAK
The second single from the album. This is a great song. I remember hearing it for the first time when I saw the video on VH1 Classic. From that point on, I loved this song.

ROCKIN' HEAVEN DOWN
Great.

EVEN IT UP
The third single from the album. Hard-a** rocking tune. On the same concert I mentioned earlier, Heart peformed this song with country-western singer, Gretchen Wilson.

STRANGE NIGHT
Great.

RAISED ON YOU
Great.

PILOT
Awesome.

SWEET DARLIN'
The fourth & final single from the album. Not that great.

Do not expect this to be Heart's last greatest album because Heart went to release greater music in the mid-80s. So, stick around.

5 out of 5 stars Great albums by Ann and Nancy, le bebes strange.......2003-06-09

Until they emerged with the Heart album and the lineup that took them to new heights, Bebe Le Strange was the hardest album the Wilson Sisters and company came up with, and it proved that they were some really strange bebes.

The title track, a fan's tribute to a rocker, is a down and dirty rocker with a fiery and quick punky riff inbetween the chorus and the verse and is not only the best song on the album, but one of four (count'em, FOUR!, rockers.)

The slow "Down On Me" is pure fiery blues, and the guitars that accompany "You get so down/down on me" resemble the guitars on The Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." Ann's vocals are really powerful throughout the number.

The brief instrumental "Silver Wheels" is played by Nancy Wilson before erupting into the second great rocker, the breakneck "Break", which has a riff like Black Sabbath's "Paranoid." It seems to be against the rigid strictures of the corporate mindset: "I got no more respect for the big man/Pulling me down to what he understands/... No one is going to tie me to this machine/Giving me formula force fed dreams." There's an interesting reference to one of their earlier singles: "After a while, there just ain't no more magic, man." A little injoke there.

After starting with a slow guitar, "Rockin Heaven Down" goes into power rocker mode after the title words are sung.

I don't know why they chose "Even It Up" as the single. It's good enough, with a catchy enough riff, but I can think of three or four other songs that could've done better. The song has Ann demanding her man, who has clearly been using her, to pay her back for what she did for him. The horn section in this song is courtesy of the Tower of Power group.

"Strange Night" shares contention with "Rockin Heaven Down" for hardest song, as Howard Leese's really snarling guitar attests to. Wild night too, if the guitar's evidence

With the exception of Michael Derosier on drums, "Raised On You" is Nancy Wilson's show all the way, vocals included, in this splendid little piano rocker which is their version of Fleetwood Mac's "Say You Love Me." The message behind this song can be summed up in these lines: "Let's go tell the world/to quit turning cold/Just let me be raised on you."

That is followed by the light acoustic "Pilot", a theme about finding love analogous to a pilot finding a place to land: "Pilot I fell through/From the blue/I just flew into you."

"Sweet Darlin" is one of Heart's best ballads, and a piano one. This one is Ann's baby, as she Ann played bass, drums, alto flute, tambourine, as well as piano and acoustic guitar. Oh yes, she wrote the song as well. It bursts into power ballad mode at the bridge. "Engines were screaming..." in reference to a flight she has to take, but I wonder if that mirrors her own heart at the love she has found.

Songwriter Sue Ennis co-writes seven of the ten tracks here--the three exceptions being "Silver Wheels," "Raised On You," and "Sweet Darlin." Probably their second best pre-Capitol album after Dreamboat Annie.

5 out of 5 stars Raised on Heart.......2003-01-03

Bebe Le Strange is one of the albums that made me a more serious musician. Listening to Nancy Wilson on the song "Raised on you" raised a few questions in my mind. Who is really the masterminds behind the heart sound? Ann and Nancy truly deliver what I want to hear on a record. "Silver Wheels" captivated me the minute I heard it and now that's one of my favorites to play on the guitar. Probably my favorite song off of this record is "Strange Night" which is great to listen to on a road trip. "Sweet Darlin" is Ann Wilson's voice to the max it's really gorgeous. Please if you are into good music..get this CD.

If you have never really listened to Heart, then buy this 3-CD box set containing their earlier works. (and their first CD Dreamboat Annie) Although not listed on the list of tracks listed by Amazon and a previous review, these three CD's do contain two bonus tracks on each CD for the loyal Heart fan. There is also a very low price on this set compared if you bought each CD separately. Buy this CD set and "Kick It Out!"

5 out of 5 stars Great albms, but be warned - these AREN'T the remasters.......2005-06-27

Little Queen (1977.) Heart's second album.
Dog And Butterfly (1978.) Heart's fourth album.
Bebe Le Strange (1980. Heart's fifth album.

One of my all-time favorite classic rock bands is Heart. Of all the rock and roll bands I have ever listened to that have female members in the band, Heart is by far my favorite of the bunch. Over the years the band has experimented with many rock and roll sounds, and rarely failed to please their legions of fans. It's not surprising to see that the band's material still gets heavy rotation on classic rock and eighties rock stations on a regular basis. In recent years, this box set was released, combining the Little Queen, Dog And Butterfly, and Bebe Le Strange albums. Read on for my review.

This is exactly what it says it is - it's a box set that combines three of Heart's classic albums. You can now get these three great albums in one place, for one low price. What you get in the set are Little Queen, the band's major label debut. Combining folksy, melodic elements with pop rock, the band broke into the mainstream with this release. The album features the hits Barracuda and Kick It Out, some of the best work the band has ever done in my opinion. Secondly in this collection is the band's fourth album, Dog And Butterfly. I personally feel this is the best album in this collection, and overall the band's best seventies album, tied with their classic debut Dreamboat Annie. The album represented a sort of peak for the band, because it was essentially the all-time high for their classic seventies sound, and would also be the last album to use it. Finally in this collection we have Bebe Le Strange, the album on which the band began to change their sound. At this point in time, hard/punk rock and new wave were beginning to break into the musical mainstream, and starting with this album, the band began a sound shift in an effort to maintain their audience. With this release the band would fade into obscurity until making a comeback with their self-titled album five years later. Bebe's a great album, even if it was never one of the more popular ones. Unfortunately, there's a huge problem with this set - these are the ORIGINAL CD RELEASES, not the remastered versions. The remasters feature, rather obviously, remastered sound quality, but they also expand the liner notes greatly and add in plenty of previously-unreleased bonus tracks. THOSE are the definitive CD releases of the albums, but if those added bells and whistles don't appeal to you and you're just interested in the albums themselves, this box set is a great deal.

Despite the release of remastered versions of these albums, the box set of all of these albums remains pretty readily available in stores. This means that if you're looking for it, it shouldn't be too tough to find. And if you just want the albums and don't csre for bonus tracks, this is for you!

And there you have it. Many bands have had releases like this, that combine many of their classic albums together and greatly reduce the price - it's almost like a "buy two get one free" deal. If you're thinking about getting one of these boxes, though, you may want to make sure it has the remastered versions of the respective band's releases, if such versions exist. Either way, these boxes are a better bargain than buying an artist's albuns separately. No Heart fan should be without these albums, and this is the fastest, easiest way to get them - that is, IF you don't want the remasters.

    5 out of 5 stars 3 Great Discs.......2004-02-26

Three classic Heart CDs that should be in every fan's collection. "Little Queen" and "Dog and Butterfly" are two of their best, hands down, and the only thing I would have done differently is to either add "Dreamboat Annie", or switch it with "Bebe Le Strange". Bebe is a good album, but not up to the quality of those other three (in my humble opinion, of course).

But.... be that as it may, it's a boxed set with three awesome discs. Ann Wilson's vocals with Nancy's guitars, and that is pretty darned hard to beat. Pop them in and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars All three albums a must have for all Heart fans!.......1999-12-29

I own all three cds and enjoy listening to them. All three cds showcase the vocal talents of Ann Wilson. And of course, the music is great. From hard rock to acoustic numbers. I don't know which style I like better. I highly recommend these recordings.
