4 out of 5 stars Cassette replacement.......2005-08-02

I love all of Meatloafs earlier work. Being that my new car has a CD player and not a cassette player is the reason for buying this disk.
I love to crank up the volume and listen to the bass.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation for the Meat Loaf beginner.......2004-04-13

Looking for a place to start your Meat Loaf collection? This is it. Though no-one should be without "Bat Out Of Hell", and this omits the best track from that album ("For Crying Out Loud"), it is nevertheless an ideal place to kick off your quest for Meat Loaf greatness. The five "Bat Out Of Hell" tracks that make up the majority of the album are, predominantly, the rock classics, with "Heaven Can Wait" and "For Crying Out Loud" having missed the cut. Regardless, I don't think anyone can turn down an album that contains "Bat", "Hot Summer Night", "Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad", "All Revved Up" and "Paradise By The Dashboard Light".
The non-"Bat" tracks, however, are where the album really starts to show Meat's true brilliance. From "Dead Ringer" comes not only the title track but also the hit singles "Read 'em And Weep" and "I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us". The latter in particular is a true highlight, a seven-minute spectacular that rips along in a brilliant combination of piano and bass.
Contributions from Meat's third and final album with Epic are also present - "Midnight At The Lost And Found" and "Razor's Edge" are both familiar to Meat Loaf fans, and are in fact two of his best tracks in general. Though "Midnight" is a hugely underrated LP, the songs from it are top notch.

I originally got the vinyl version of this, and other than a slightly different arrangement, it also contained the brilliant "Modern Girl". This track really SHOULD have appeared on the CD as well (if you read the back cover closely, you'll see that it was meant to), but it made way for "Lost Love". This track was the b-side to the 12" version of "If You Really Want To" (First single from "Midnight") and is brilliant. Though not as good as "Modern Girl", it is definitely one of Meat's better efforts and it's criminal that it missed out on an appearance on "Midnight".

All up - if you're looking to start your Meat Loaf collection, this is the ideal album with which to do it. Grab "Rock 'n' Roll Hero" while you're at it for his best stuff with Arista and you've got the ultimate combination.

SONGS OF NOTE: Dead Ringer For Love, Midnight At The Lost And Found, You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth

5 out of 5 stars SOME OF THE BAT AND MORE.......2003-05-20

The criticism against the Loaf is that his brand of theatrical rock is overblown schlock rock, but what counts is how the melody and the words come together, in any popular musical genre. Rock is anyway known for excess, and that includes Alice Cooper, Queen and Marilyn Manson. I love Meat Loaf on the soundtrack of the Rocky Horror Picture Show and I love his solo recordings. This hits collection includes five hits from the zillion selling Bat Out Of Hell album: the title track, Two Out Of Three Aint Bad, All Revved Up, You Took The Words and the mini-operetta Paradise By The Dashboard Light. The rest of the songs is of the same quality - blistering melodic rock - and my favorites include Midnight At The Lost And Found, I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us and Dead Ringer, a duet with Cher. There's no substitute for the BOOH album though so I recommend you get it. It remains a classic of dramatic overblown theatrical rock with each song a classic. For those who want a wider selection of Meat Loaf's late 70s and early 80s output, this album is ideal.

4 out of 5 stars WHERE IS "LOST LOVE".......2002-10-03

HITS OUT OF HELL, ROCK AND ROLL HERO & THE VERY BEST are the Best of all the Meat Loaf albums - ALL the Meat Loaf albums!
But one thing - PARADISE is not the last song on HITS OUT OF HELL That credit goes to LOST LOVE (a song by unknown) which has mysteriously never been on any Meat Loaf album...
I reckon it's an outtake from MIDNIGHT... but why?!
If you find HITS make sure the last song is LOST LOVE
Because that is the reason why the album's worth buying!
Whoever's selling these shoddy versions of HITS with PARADISE as the last song should be made to pay!

5 out of 5 stars You don't need to sleep on this one!.......2000-07-28

Meat Loaf is the most versatile singer/actor working today and I would feel equally thrilled watching him perform live or going with him to lunch and a football game. This cd differs from "Bat Out Of Hell" in that it is missing two songs from that one (Heaven Can Wait and For Crying out Loud) but it has 5 other songs (Read 'Em and Weep, Dead Ringer For Love, Midnight At The Lost & Found, I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us and Razor's Edge). All are great songs, but of course the ones by J. Steinman are some of the best rock songs of all time.

I guess that is why "Bat out of Hell" has done so well. If it was reissued today with a little publicity, It would go into the top 10 again.

"Paradise By The Dashboard Light" is comparable to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" both in style and composition and both songs belong in anyone's top 10 all time rock songs.

It is rumored that "Bat Out of Hell III" is in the works and I certainly hope so as I would love to buy a new cd the same time everyone else is buying it instead of 20 years later.

Product Description

XUK's velvet-lined debut double album featuring guest performances from Los Angeles punk/pop bands The King Cheetah, Bang Sugar Bang and Billion Stars. Additional piano by Los Angeles singer/songwriter Elly K. 21 songs include two covers - Wild World (Cat Stevens) and Janine (David Bowie). The songs sound new yet familiar almost as if they are well-known classsic rock songs that have been around for years.

5 out of 5 stars A work of art. The originals blow the covers away........2006-06-25

David Bowie is good company to strive for and in 'Janine' Simon and the crew of XUK not only blow the original away, but in honest retrospective show that the cover is one of the weakest tracks on the first 'side' of the album. Not because it is in itself weak, but because the original works with telling lyrics written by Simon Holden, are that much more powerful and dynamic than might be expected in a DIY effort. The music itself, speaking of dynamic, makes you believe in classical string instruments again if you've been losing faith. Violas are made to soar in rock arrangements in a refreshing revealing of the player's emotions and love for what they do... and that is really what is at the heart of this double album's success (and I do call it a blazing success)... not for a moment do you believe that any less then their best and most driven efforts were poured into each and every song. With stand outs like "Unzip" and "New Way" opening the first side, songs that should already be playing on college radio stations across the country, and soon enough national/local radio stations. Then there are songs like "Crashing in a Jet", quirky songs that, despite their lyrics that almost dare the listener to fall out of the trance caused by the in depth lyrics of all the songs up to that point, make you really listen to the song and realize that it's point is just as valid and 'important' to XUK as any other. It is important, too. This album needs a label, indy or otherwise. This album needs to be heard by the masses, so fans... spread the word.

4 out of 5 stars Like meeting an old friend & not wanting them to go..........2006-05-25

The sound and style are earcatching. The more you hear the songs, the more you want the albums to repeat. One day I am going to catch them live. I'm like one of the reviewers above, I feel I know them already and they're great friends. Love the stuff! To all those who are cathing their tours? I am as jealous as hell!!

5 out of 5 stars xuk rox sox!.......2006-04-27

The first Unzip of the CD is a thrilling anticipation of more musical treats to come in XUK's double CD feast. XUK's lyrical prowess leads the listener through musical themes not with a leaden leash, but rather a gentle coaxing that seduces and tittilates eventually leading to an aural climax at the end of the aptly titled last track, Tear it Up. This CD keeps things exciting and relaxed, while always leaving the listener wanting more. What I like most about Love Hits are the songs comfortable unpredictability. They feel as if I've been listening to them for years, yet with every new spin I catch myself feeling the newfound giddiness of uncovering hidden treasure. XUK rocks my socks!

5 out of 5 stars love this vintage.......2006-04-27

rich, harmonious, full-bodied, melodic, sing-along, dance; song-after-song in this generous offering of two discs makes me feel so happy to be listening...

5 out of 5 stars XUK Today?.......2006-04-26

OK, so I lent this CD out to a friend and I haven't received it back yet. Wanting to be able to play it again. 'New Way' (I think that's the title) has some lyrics that have infused wisdom of some of the one-word codes that have ensued through the spoken language of English slang. 'Unzip' is a great song to play when first starting a trip in the van or car or truck and is featured as the first song on the CD. Haven't yet gone on a road trip to node down with the full two CD version and hope to reach that opportunity and experience. Glad that I purchased the CD yet also want to be able to hear it again so I must get it back from my friend so as to promote more positive, fun, and (I think Simon might like this word) luscious CD.

till then
Robert

    3 out of 5 stars Unnecessary.......2001-06-28

Does it get any more cheesy than Meat Loaf? "Bat Out of Hell" was one of the greatest tributes of teen cheese that will ever be produced, and it will remain a rock classic for just that reason. "Hits Out of Hell" is just stupid. All the good tracks from "Bat Out of Hell" are here ("Bat Out of Hell," "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad," "Paradise By the Dashboard Light," etc.), but they're surrounded by drivel from two other Meat Loaf albums. The "Bat Out of Hell" tracks remain good, but why would you want them out of the context of "Bat Out of Hell" when you don't really get anything else to make it worth your while?
