Van Morrison often comes across as brusque and gloomy, which is hardly a bad thing. Indeed, one would be hard-pressed to come up with a more dire album than Morrison's masterwork, Astral Weeks. The brooding Belfast bard tends to lighten up, however, when he's in the company of musical forerunners and peers, as evidenced by 1994's A Night in San Francisco (with John Lee Hooker, Junior Wells, and Jimmy Witherspoon) and '96's Tell Me Something: The Songs of Mose Allison (featuring Allison, Georgie Fame, and Ben Sidran). Here he reaches back to his skiffle youth, bringing aboard Lonnie Donegan (to skiffle what James Brown is to funk), trad-jazz bandleader Chris Barber, and Dr. John for a performance of '50s favorites. Skiffle, which was a brief craze in those pre-Beatles days, is a resolutely upbeat mating of jazz, blues, and folk, so you find Donegan and Morrison bellowing the lyrically downcast likes of "Frankie & Johnny," "Goodnight Irene," and "It Takes a Worried Man" as if they didn't have a care in the world. The result is an album that some would consider forgettable... if they could only shake those catchy tunes that keep running through their minds. --Steven Stolder

The quintessential geezer album, Van `The Man' Morrison moonlights alongside Lonnie `Chewing Gum On the Bedpost' Donegan and brontosaurean trad-jazz trombonist Chris Barber on this revival set of retro-Limey chicken-picken folk songs. Recorded in Ireland last year, the proceedings are appropriately exuberant; Donegan's antiquated nasal bleating is a fitting adjunct to Morrison's squalling bluff and bluster on cranky old folk/blues tunes like Goodnight Irene, Outskirts Of Town, Frankie and Johnny, and Muleskinner Blues. While Morrison and Donegan honk and holler the simple traditionals like ropy old farmyard geese, the raw energy of the big ... six-piece backing band (Dr. John tickles the ivories on Good Morning Blues and Goin' Home) carries the load, injecting the right amount of steely twang and jangle to make these skiffly old dustballs chug down the track regardless of whose ego is bouncing by.

Skiffle Me Back To Alabama.......2002-04-30

Whenever I want great (eg. amazon five-star) truck-drivin' music, the first place I search is amazon "truck-drivin". Of course, this was my connection with Van Morrison's Skiffle Sessions. You wonder why?. Well, here's why: I don't own a truck, but I do own a Van. When I entered "Van Drivin Music", amazon returned The Skiffle Sessions. I've got to admit, it's the finest 53 minutes of van drivin music I can remember. I loved it and I bought it. Every time I hear the Ballad of Jesse James, it reminds me a little bit more of Jesse's birthdate. It really gets to me. Tom

a new convert.......2002-04-06

I have never before owned a Van Morrison recording. I am a long time devotee of blues, folk and bluegrass and never have I experienced all three on one recording. If you can sit perfectly still while listening to this gem, you'd best call your doctor. For me this is kind of like discovering a new author and then reading everything he or she has published. I tried to read my e-mail in the office this morning but couldn't concentrate on it until all 15 tracks had played. I've never heard of skiffle but I love it.

Skiffle 101.......2002-01-27

I bought this CD because I buy every CD that Van Morrison releases. I have to admit that I was oblivious as to who Lonnie Donegan & Chris Barber were and what exactly "skiffling" was. I was quickly impressed with this CD (Van doesn't even appear right away). It's just good, clean, toe tappin', knee stompin' fun. Clearly, Van was enjoying getting back to his roots with a couple of masters of skiffle.

I'm still not sure I'd know a skiffler if I bumped into one in a well-lit alley, but I can vouch for this CD being worthy of purchasing for any devoted Van fan.

NENA at her BEST.......2001-12-26

For anyone who likes NENA and her more guitar based stuff, it doesn't get any better than this. On this CD she presents her old hits and songs from the latter album "wenn alles richtig ist, dann stimmt was nicht" (if everythings going right, then something's wrong)in the best manner that NENA really knows how, she rocks it!! Lots of guitars and even a slight double basedrum, great!! I went to about 10 concerts in the last 2 years and one was better than the other. Too bad that some of the other songs that she played are not on this CD. If you like NENA or German Music, then this is a must.

A stunning Nena CD.......2001-06-29

This is a sensational Nena CD. Prepare to be blown away! 5 stars aren't enough for something this exciting. If you're a Nena fan I wish I could reach out from your screen and shake you and say "buy this now!". The white circle on the CD cover says something like "in her best form she rocked 40,000 people with her greatest hits". This CD presents an entire concert at the Rhine Stadium in Dusseldorf in 1998.

This is the second live Nena album and most of its material covers her latest pop album WENN ALLES RICHTIG IST, DANN STIMMT WAS NICHT. One extremely unique highlight of this live album is the live duet between Nena and Hartmut Engler( the lead singer of the German pop music band Pur ) with the Pur band performing as well. The two German singers sing the original Pur song "Lena", which is modified to "Nena" and adjusted for the duet, so that Nena sings in the first person instead of the second person point of view and the second person instead of the first person point of view in the original song. Of the other 13 Nena songs in this album, 5 come from her album WENN ALLES RICHTIG IST, DANN STIMMT WAS NICHT( "Was hast du in meinem Traum gemacht", "Wenn wenigstens Sommer waer", "Dann fiel mir auf", "Das ist normal", and "Es ist in Ordnung" ), 1 comes from her album JAMMA NICH( "Jamma nich" ), 1 comes from her album BONGO GIRL( "Was immer du tust" ), 1 comes from her album WUNDER GESCHEH'N( "Abschied" ), 1 comes from her album FEUER UND FLAMME( "Irgendwie, irgendwo, irgendwann" ), 1 comes from her album ?( FRAGEZEICHEN )[ "?( Fragezeichen ) ], and 3 come from her album NENA( "Leuchtturm", "Nur getraeumt", and "99 Luftballons" ). As Stephen Sondheim's new shows become fewer and further between, tribute concerts have become a popular way to fill the gaps. Among others, there was Sondheim: A Celebration at Carnegie Hall in 1993. There was Sondheim: A Celebration in 1997. Now there's Sondheim: Tonight's Celebration--err, make that Sondheim Tonight, a live London concert, and a mixed bag it is. Longtime Sondheim followers will enjoy Len Cariou's brief return as Sweeney Todd, the reunion of the cast of Side by Side by Sondheim, and the appearance of British singers Cleo Laine, Maria Friedman, and Michael Ball. On the other hand, Dame Edna Everage (a.k.a. Barry Humphries) provides a revised "Ladies Who Lunch" that is best skipped. Most notable are the recorded premieres of two instrumental works Sondheim wrote as a student, A Very Short Violin Piece and the more interesting Variations on a Theme (Katie Malone) for solo piano. This two-CD set clocks in at a generous 139 minutes, but over a half-hour is monologues and reminiscences (all separately tracked, thankfully), and another 16 minutes is pleasant but undistinguished orchestral arrangements. No doubt the concert was more entertaining to attend than to listen to on CD, but the Sondheim completist should find something of interest here--or at least get a fix while waiting for Wise Guys. --David Horiuchi

There is something for everyone on this CD!.......2002-08-15

Stop with the Dame Edna insults! She performed with the blessing of Mr. Sondheim - helped sell tickets for an excellent charity - and thrilled both the audience and cast. The cast members filled the wings to hear the Great Dame! The audience was in stitches. The London Philharmonic was in top form. And while one reviewer may not like Michael Ball - he has legions of fans that do love him. Julia Mackenzie's Barcelona is awesome! Admittedly I am biased about this CD - but rest assured, there is something for everyone on this recording. And the sales of the CD benefit the Alan J. Lerner Cancer Charity!

Hardly ideal, but nice instrumentals.......2000-07-07

It seems to be a long held maxim that, although the Brits adore Sondheim, they often have little idea how to perform his work. This concert recording of Sondheim's work (I expect that there will one day be more concert recordings of Sondheim's work then cast recordings), with one or two exceptions, seems to bear this out.

The most enjoyable performance on this album comes from the musicians. The opening overture and the Act II Entr'acte, as well as a lovely arrangement of two songs from Pacific Overtures, are given a delightful treatment by the London Philharmonic. Two instrumental obscurities written by the young Sondheim, a violin sonata and a piano theme, are capably played in what I believe is their recorded debut.

And then. I personally can live with Dame Edna's twisted rendition of "Ladies who Lunch," but Michael Ball's tortured singing is a taste which I have not yet acquired (although he does provide one of several amusing anecdotes between songs). Most of the remaining performances are quite forgettable, and although there aren't any major clunkers as there were on the LA cast recording, there aren't any major redeeming performances either.

If you're a Sondheim fan, you've probably heard all these songs done better. It's a bit frightening that the most enjoyable parts of a Sondheim concert are the bits between the songs.

Sondheim is my fav....but sheesh!.......1999-12-23

There have been SOOOO many excellent concerts of Sondheim's work....and this ISN'T one of them. Many people hate Dame Edna's LADIES WHO LUNCH, well they are unaware that it is a joke! Maria Friedman disgraces all of Sondheim's beautiful work, as do many of her co-stars. Please consider another compliation of Sondheim's work.

This CD set perfectly showcases the greatness of Sondheim's music and lyrics. As a bonus, it has the privilege of Dame Edna singing The Ladies Who Lunch like it has never been sung before or ever will be again. It has to be heard (and to laugh with and enjoyed). A must for all theatre and music lovers.

I am a devoted Sondheim fan but these discs try my loyalty. Dame (or is it Damn?) Edna is an insult to Sondheim and his music. Now I know why they waited so long to release these discs.

More of a souvenir for the converted than an enticement to the uninitiated, Live Around the World is a double-disc dosage of Vital Information, the jazz-rock vehicle that former Journey drummer Steve Smith has cultivated since the early 1980s. Recorded in club-sized venues in Sydney, Toronto, Chicago, and Amsterdam, the group leans on jazz and traces of R&B as its principal benchmarks, bringing to mind an evolved, slightly edgier Chick Corea Elektric Band minus Eric Marienthal on saxophone--no surprise, really, given guitarist Frank Gambale's in both units.

The four-man Vital Information's selections are regularly sweetened by the Hammond B-3 and accordion of former Santana keyboardist Tom Coster (bassist Baron Browne rounds out the foursome, replacing Jeff Andrews). Coster, in fact, is the primary instrumental focus of many selections and even contributes a subdued accordion version of his Santana hit, "Europa." The group's clever take on Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick" surfaces here as an energetic fingerpainting exercise by Browne (supplemented by a soulful Hammond rave-up by Coster) before the tune becomes recognizable in its final 45 seconds--without a single Bonhamesque workout on drums from Smith. Several selections are attractively performed ("Swamp Stomp" and "First Thing This Morning" are treats), though the group never fully catches fire (Gambale in particular) until the 15th track, "Over and Out," the closest the band gets to full-throttle fusion on this package. When this record came out I immediatly bought it without thinking it twice. I am a Jazz/fusion enthusiast so Vital Information is one of the bands in my map. The album has some strong points but also some weaknesses. I appreciate Gambale' s playing and the exceptional musicianship from all the guys. Coster is such a talent! His musicality is nothing less than amazing. But in the end this album is really not that much in my opinion. Apart from Europa (here in a splendid accordion version), twe two minor blues Mr P.C. (Coltrane) and the Jazzy Moby Dick (Led Zeppelin), Take eight and few other moments I'm not completly satisfied with the music. It's too flat. These guys can do a lot better than this in my opinion. Probably is the material that does not shine. Where we come from was not their best album for I am concerned and this live is almost completly based on that material. In the end this double live is a little disappointing. I still prefer Uzeb live '90 which in my opinion still eats this live in a single bite. Anyway sometimes I enjoy listen to this album but it's a little less than what I was expecting from such tremendously gifted players.

Just Listen To This.......2002-02-27

"Live Around The World We Come From" is a double CD that captures Steve Smith's Vital Information in concert. This is the second time that Vital Info has been recorded live and is the better of the two. The band performs all types of music: The Creole influenced "Swamp Stomp", the Jazz of Ornette Coleman's "Happy House", the atonal romp that is "Cranial Jam" are all a part of this eclectic mix. Some highlights from the first disc are a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Moby Dick". The center piece of this version is the Baron and not the drumming of Smith. The other members of the band follow Baron's bass lines and improvise over them. The end result is a very different sound than the one that Zeppelin originated. "First Thing This Morning" is another great tune and is one of Frank Gambale's best compostions. Frank has always been an amazing guitarist but this song demonstrates that he has made leaps in the composition side of being a complete musician. The song itself has a catchy melody and the band is brilliant throughout. The end of the piece has Baron and Steve improvising around the song's groove and is simply awesome. The second disc has a couple of show stoppers as well. "Over and Out " is a showcase for Mr. Gambale's impressive sweepicking technique and should amaze most guitarists. The often covered John Coltrane masterwork "Mr. P.C." is the last live song on the disc and also the most blistering. Tom Coster has an amazing hammond solo and Gambale picks up the baton and runs with it. The song then has Gambale, Coster and Smith trade fours until Steve Smith performs a jaw dropping drum solo that will knock some paintings off of your walls. Also incuded on these discs are a couple of studio songs that are also very good and may provide a hint of things to come. Vital Information is one of the, and to some the, best Fusion bands currently touring. Buy this and see why for yourself. Highly recommended.

it's almost like being there.............2000-10-09

this a wonderful reminder of seeing the band in lovely buffalo n.y. at the tralfamadore two marches ago or so. one of the things that makes this even better is the extra bonus studio cuts included within, soulful drums originally recorded by joe dukes on jack mcduffs screamin'. it's kind of an update and just as greasy, highly recommended. the other big highlight for me is steve's solo on mr.pc, a textbook of keeping the form and blowing over the changes. do yourself a favor and pick this one up, you'll be glad you did. then play it for a friend who also loves great music, he'll owe you one.....

If you like extremly intense, super fast guitar work, this is for you! The Dr.Sin bonus is pretty good, but Yngwie's playing is right on the money. This CD covers a fiarly broad amount of his material, so there is a little something for everyone. One of my favorites is "Rising Force". This track is especially impressive bescause of all the long arpeggiated runs he does. Another highlight is his true "Guitar Solo". He incorporates a lot of bits and pieces from his songs and some classical improvisational stuff to really set things on fire. This is a must have! My advice though, is to save yourself a lot of cash and buy the recently released "DOUBLE LIVE" set. It does not have the Dr.Sin opening act bonus, but all of Yngwies stuff is the same. And to top it all off, the mix is even pretty good. Happy shredding!
