Customer Reviews:
Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Customer Reviews:
Very well played live album.......1999-06-09
This album, somewhat of a sequel to "Made In Japan", features a 'matured' Deep Purple. The vocals do not quite match the raw power of early Deep Purple, but the guitar work is excellent as usual. The rest of the band does as well a job as they did in the 70s. This is recommended for serious Deep Purple fans, but not for casual listeners.
No, guys, you don't have to be perfect, but..........1999-05-30
Nobody's Perfect resides in the lower echelon of live DP albums; it's coffin-mates include Last Concert In Japan and California Jamming (relegated there, to be sure, due to poor sound quality). But Nobodys' Perfect comes from an uninspired period in Purple history, when Blackmore and Gillan were not getting on, and the '80s albums they were supporting were not exactly setting the world on fire. On this release, the song selection is not bad, it's just that the invisible x-factor that makes my favorite band so magical is hibernating. Blackmore plays with a "who cares?" attitude, hit-or-miss is being generous, and he sounds like he's playing through a 10-watt Crate amp. Lord and Paice retain some dignity, of course (the beginning of "Knocking at Your Back Door" is good fun), but Glover is absent from the mix, and Gillan's voice sounds shot. He also mumbles very incoherently between songs (I'm an American, so maybe there's some British-isms going on I just can't fathom, BUT, I understand him very well on all the other albums and love his racy banter on the Paris '85 video). This is the type of album bands usually release to fulfill contractual obligations. If there are any redeeming points, it's the packaging (beautiful Pink Floyd-like cover, plus a rare photo of Ritchie sitting with his parents!), and also the "Hush '88" remake (ironic, huh? I used to hate this rendition and now I kind of like it).
Perfect Title.......1999-03-26
As the title says "Nobody's Perfect". It's just the record company trying to squeeze a few more dollars out of us die hard DP fans. Ian's voice is shot. I've seen the band since this release (without Ritchie) and Ian's voice is better then this album and Steve fills Ritchie's shoes nicely. The rest of the band has still got it. It just goes to prove that grey don't mean dead.
Disappointing live versions of classic studio cuts.......1999-02-02
Any time a group attempts a live album there is the risk that the music, rather than become more powerful, will lose vitality in the live translation. Such is the case here. Deep Purple has a number of live collections that work well - Made in Japan for example. This is not one of them. These live versions come across as uninspired and, in some cases, downright lazy. Unless you are one who desires "everything" put on CD by Deep Purple, spend your money more selectively among their other offerings.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

Customer Reviews:
What's with the bad rep for this one?.......2006-08-27
It's really good. It provides live versions of three songs from "The House of Blue Light" that as far as I know have not been recorded live at any other time. "Perfect Strangers" and "Knocking at Your Back Door" both rock as well. Sure, some of the classics, such as "Highway Star" and "Strange Kind of Woman" have been done better, but as far as I'm concerned, this is the best live performance of "Smoke on the Water" ever recorded. Most of the other classics are pretty good. It's not Made in Japan, but it wasn't supposed to be either. Buy it.
Nobody is perfect, but Deep Purple come close..........2006-05-11
This album is a great souvenir of Deep Purple's 1987 "House of Blue Light" world tour. The line up for the '87 tour: Richie Blackmore - Guitar, Jon Lord - Keyboards, Ian Paice - Drums, Roger Glover - Bass and Ian Gillan - Vocals.
There are so many gems included on this 2 disc re-mastered version, and it sounds good and rocks very nicely in that Deep Purple fashion. The highlights are "Strange Kind Of Woman," "Dead Or Alive," "Perfect Strangers," "Hard Lovin' Woman," "Bad Attitude," "Child In Time," "Smoke On The Water" and "Hush" (studio new recording).
I believe there's so much pressure on this legendary band (because they were so popular, powerful and famous back in the 70's) that anything they do in the "reunion" era (1984- ) seems to be taken lightly, ignored or simply written off as a band over the hill and this is simply bull****. Aren't the AC's to ZZ's way over the hill? And why are they given the royal treatment? Heck, some of Deep Purple's best stuff has come out since the reunion, including 2005`s "Rapture of the Deep."
But anyway, if you are just beginning a Deep Purple collection, especially the live albums, start with the classic "Made In Japan," that's probably the greatest live album ever released in my humble opinion. Nobody's Perfect is simply a high-quality live album from a really great tour.
Saw this Tour....Blew Me Away...Remaster Kicks @$$.......2005-07-15
I am stunned at the 1 and 2 star reviews....Of course this isn't Made in Japan...stop comparing them....jeez! the remaster version of the cd is great...they chose great performances from this tour as opposed to the confines of 1 concert...Why ON EArth would anyone have a problem w/ that?? Amazing!! Anyways this is late 80's DP....and it's great....assuming you have the 70's stuff..This cd finds the band in a playful mood, silly banter, false beginnings ie) intro jams that add to the flavor and feel of the cd.....The performaces are excellent...a bit rusty in certain places but has anyone heard Zeppelin live?? Who cares......The songs from House of the Blue Light and Perfect Strangers are better than the album versions arguably...
A studio version of Hush is thrown on at the end....also great stuff.....DP had fun on this tour, this cd proves it...they don't seem to be taking themselves as seriously, are a bit older and more laid back... This cd is totally recommended to those hard core DP fans that aren't MAde in Japan freaks.....to me this is a fresh take...I saw the show in Irvine, performances from it are included on here.....it was to this day the best concert I have ever been to, as well as my buddies I went with....but they were on acid......
Classy version of Child in Time.......2004-06-28
After reading so many average reviews of the album I was not sure if I should pick it from the rack. As a hard core fan I did end up picking the CD and am I glad I did.
As said by some of the other reviewers Gillan seems to show less interest on this album. It could be because of the tussle at the time with Blackmore. On 'Strange Kind of Woman' Gillan tries to instigate the Man In Black into the Screaming and guitar solo alternates which Blackmore seems to kill rather than build up. Gillan then cleverly converts and moves the song into 'Jesus Christ Superstar..', wonderfuly done.
Though The album lacks when compared to 'Made in Japan', there is enough energy in it to sound exciting to me.
The great part of the album are the rare live versions of three 'House of Blue light' songs 'Bad attitude' Dead or Alive' and 'Hard loving Woman'.
The editing of the album is not great as a lot of Gillan's talk with the audience fades in and out.
But the clear winner on this album is the best live version of 'Child in Time' where Gillan covers up for his lack luster performance with more edgy lamenting and screaming giving the song a new feel. There is nothing extra on the other older hits like 'Highwaystar', 'Black night' 'smoke on the water' or 'space trucking'.
The icing on the cake is the live rendition of 'Hush' by Gillan.
Don't get this one.......2004-04-16
On my 2-CD redigitized version the sound is quite good. All the best stuff is here. However, there are more wasted bytes on between-track banter. That's not the worst thing about the album though. One would expect such an excellent rock classic as "My Woman...." to receive its full due, but it doesn't. Somewhere after a few bars, the song is abandoned for a senseless lonesome take-off on Buddy Holly. Go figure. Deep Purple has much better stuff out than this.

Light hearted, fun, poignant, charming. Highly recommend........1999-04-01
Including songs from the light hearted and fun to the poignant, this CD is a treasure that should not be missed by those loving the classic Broadway musical sound. Two voices (Karen Ziemba, currently Roxie Hart in Chicago, and David Garrison, currently in Titanic) and a Steinway piano partner in this recording, and the blend of Ziemba's and Garrison's voices is perfect. The versatility of Ziemba's voice throughout this recording is most impressive, In addition to being an extraordinary dancer, Ziemba once again proves herself an exceptional singer. Garrison is terrific as well. If you like "darker" musicals, avoid this. But if you want to hear an up-tempo musical score that will make you tap your toes and if you want to hear two voices that can be listened to again and again with the same initial pleasure, get this recording.

a flawless soundtrack.......2000-10-11
This CD is a lot of fun. It brings back many memories of growing up. If you like to reminisce about the good ol' days, you should definitley check this soundtrack out. Good flick-great disk.
its all that.......2000-10-03
This soundtrack is soon to be a classic. All the old favorites are here-Taylor Dayne, Boy George, Cher, Elton and more. Patti LaBelle is the queen! The name game is fun to listen to with friends, trying to sing along. This CD is great fun!
Absolutely Flawless.......2000-10-03
This is a great soundtrack! There's not enough Boy George around these days, and I can't get enough of Elton John. I love those divas Taylor Dayne, Cher, Patti Labelle and Geri Halliwell. Drama Kidz do a great job as does Jellybean on making songs that are truley enjoyable. Recapture the feeling of the "Flawless" movie for yourself with this great soundtrack. Do yourself a favor and order it here today.
FLAWED.......2000-09-18
This had a mediocre mix. I would have given this 2 stars, but Shirley Ellis' idiotic "Name Game" cost this cd a star. I have hated "the name game" since I was three and find it sheer torture. It is idiotic, unpleasant, highly irritating and has nothing in the world to recommend it. I would rather hear the train whistle and construction trucks than the "Name Game." I wouldn't wish Shirley Ellis on anyone.
almost flawless.......2000-04-17
This is a really good soundtrack. Planet Love by Taylor Dayne is excellent. When the Money's Gone, G.A.Y., Can't Stop Love, all deserve to be classice dance floor stompers. My only complaint is the rest of the songs are simply soundtrack fodder. Worth getting for the tracks listed. Definately worth the money if you are into club music. P.S. Half Breed is not a remix, it is the classic version. I was very disapointed Amazaon had it listed as a remix

The heart of the musician shines through.......2005-10-10
There isn't a song on this CD that could not and should not be a stand-alone hit. Beautiful music. Beautiful lyrics. The voice of Danny Tate should not be absent from any music lover's CD collection or life.
Great CD.......2004-05-12
I was looking on Amazon to see if Danny Tate had released any CDs lately. Unfortunately not. This CD is really fantastic and it deserves a follow-up. I bought it back in 1995 when it came out and listened to it over and over. I especially liked playing it on road trips with friends. They would always comment about how much they liked the songs and ask who the artist was. It was guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.
The songs cover a good range. From rockin and fun to slow and bluesy. The lyrics are well written also. Good story telling with a nice play on words. All in all, a great CD that still gets time in my CD player (and I have a lot of CDs!). It's really disappointing that Danny Tate hasn't released another CD.
I see that Amazon lists a lot of these CDs in their Used section for a cheap price. Do your ears a favor and pick one up for your collection.
A Tasty Treat.......2003-09-20
This is a seriously overlooked solo artist. Danny Tate is an extremely talented and much recorded songwriter, but most of the country has not been given the opportunity to enjoy this man's own recordings. Danny Tate's songs have been recorded by the likes of the Smithereens, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Jeff Healey, and Rick Springfield to name a few. Danny's voice can go from velvety smooth to raw and gritty in the blink of an eye. There's so much variety on this disc from the crooning vocals of Dreaming, the Van Morrison influenced Do It All Over Again, the funky soul groove of Price of Love, to the beautiful ballad Still A Fool. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some quality tunes, and if you're feeling really self-indulgent, don't miss out on his first self-titled release.
