The Eagles exploded on the charts in 1975 with One of These Nights, the first of four straight albums by the band to reach No. 1. The album was their most varied to date, with the discofied title track, the stately waltz "Take It To the Limit," and the tough, cynical country rocker "Lyin' Eyes." The album contains a couple of unusual numbers as well, including Bernie Leadon's psychedelic banjo showcase "Journey of the Sorcerer" and "I Wish You Peace," which Leadon wrote with his then-girlfriend, future first daughter (by virtue of her parents, Ron and Nancy Reagan) and nude model (courtesy of Playboy), Patti Davis. --Daniel Durchholz

3 out of 5 stars decent.......2007-05-24

Starting with this album, this is where I felt the Eagles became more inconsistent. It's also one of those albums where the better songs are the ones you probably aren't as familiar with, such as "Journey of the Sorcerer" and "Too Many Hands". Those are probably my favorite two tracks. I also like "Take It to the Limit" after all these years.

I don't care for the title song at all, though. The rest of the album is passable, but nothing to really wow me either. Pick up the Eagles debut instead.

5 out of 5 stars The Eagles' fourth album and second megahit.......2006-12-18

By 1975,when this album was released, the Eagles were already one of the best-selling arists of the 1970's. The band was still fulfilling their Asylum Records contract, which they landed in or around 1972. That year, the band put out their self-titled debut. DESPERADO followed in '73,ON THE BORDER followed in '74,then this album followed, then 1976's HOTEL CALIFORNIA followed. After HC,the band took a studio break which gave them time to work on the 1979 release of THE LONG RUN. Top 20 hits from this album include the title track,AFTER THE THRILL IS GONE,TAKE IT TO THE LIMIT and LYIN' EYES(later released on the URBAN COWBOY movie soundtrack in '80). Between this album and HC,the band had enough hit material for a compilation,THE EAGLES' GREATEST HITS,released in early or mid-1976. The other songs are good.

1 out of 5 stars Does anybody besides me hate this band?.......2006-12-05

It's been a while since I bashed the Eagles, so I thought I'd get back in action. Anyway...
Three of the most annoying Top 5 ihts of the '70's can be found on this disc: the title track, a crappy uptempo/pseudo-dance song that's even more annoying than Hotel California; the brainless Lyin' Eyes; and especially the sophoric, overly-orchestrated Take it To the Limit. I don't know how ANYBODY can put up with this group, but if I hear one more Eagles hit on the radio...

4 out of 5 stars Last great album before they tread down the road to balladeers. .......2006-09-16

Aside from the following review, the most important note I'd offer on this CD is the sound quality. It's slightly inconsistent. There are a couple of songs where the highs are lacking and the song sounds muffled, the best example being my favorite song on the CD, "The Hollywood Waltz." There are a couple other songs that are affected to a lesser degree, but there is some inconsistency. I anticipate remastered versions of all their CDs, but especially this one. That said, my review: I've always loved the Eagles' earlier albums/CDs because they were edgier and more multifaceted. You could always count on some solid guitar work, a little southern flavor, and, yes, some gorgeous ballads. To be fair, some of my favorite songs by the Eagles are just that- "Peaceful Easy Feeling, Best of My Love," and "Hollywood Watlz (from this CD) stick out the most up to this point. But those songs were never at the expense of what made them the Southern Californian sound stalwarts they'd become. Solid rocking songs like "Outlaw Man, James Dean," and from this CD the title song and "Too Many Hands" fit that mold to a tee. And going down the unbeaten path was not beneath them neither, as songs from previous CDs like "Bitter Creek" and "Ol' 55", or from this CD gems like "Journey of The Sorcerer" and "Visions" would indicate. So mellow sounds like "I Wish You Peace" and "After the Thrill is Gone" come as no surprise to this CD as well. That was always the appeal to the large demographic of a fan base that they had built. But the Eagles like so many in rock history couldn't resist (and who could fault them) catering to what seemed to appeal the most- their "soft rock ballads." That in itself isn't so bad. They were as good at that as anyone. But Infusing Joe Walsh into the nix didn't guarantee a rocking angle. It may have given them one solid Walsh rocker of a contribution in "In The City." But future CDs included less and less of such tunes. Instead they offset their ballads with "power ballads," the very ridicule of so many bands in the 80s. In that, this CD was the turning point for the Eagles. Though their following was to grow exponentially, they lost many who were fans of their earlier works after this CD, or at least became less appealing in their eyes. For lack of a better comparison, handing the reigns over to Don Henley- who was good at what he did- did for the Eagles what giving Phil Colliins more and more input did for Genesis. It didn't make for bad music, especially initially, but it went more for pop radio play. After "One of These Nights" if they didn't produce ballads, they produced mere pop, with rare exceptions. In that, "One of These Nights" holds a special place in my heart, starting off with a non-stop, seven song assault of various flavors. Again, I don't dislike their future ballads. They're some of my favorite songs. But their identity depended too much on that for appeal, as the make-up of their concert demographic would indicate. I challenge anyone to play this CD, then play "Hotel California," and "The Long Run":. Though they'd include songs of the Eagles original identiy, while appealing, I've always considered songs like "Heartache Tonight, New Kid In Town," and "The Long Run," as pop at best, While songs like "Greeks Don't Want No Freaks" and "Disco Strangler" are simply unusual. Some would call that selling out. I don't necessarily go that far. But they had strayed far from their many angled sounds of past albums. Like most bands the Eagles had evolved. Whether that was for better or worse is purely subjective. That this CD was the last of it's kind isn't. I own all of their CDs, though I didn't buy the milquetoast "Hell Freezes Over," nor any of their subsequent "greatest hits" reincarnations. I like them all on their own merit, I simply liked it when they also used to rock a little more.

3 out of 5 stars Too laid-back.......2006-06-11

How contradictory is that The Eagles' first album completely recorded without Glyn Johns is nearly a yawn considering they had quit working with him because supposedly they wanted to get more into rock and roll than he had allowed them to. Also wry is the fact that, while inferior to the underrated On The Border, One of These Nights would be more successful. You can rarely trust the public's opinion.

Now with the songs:

-One Of These Mights. While having a cool bass/guitar intro, a nice solo and amazing falsetto vocals by Randy Meisner, the song drags on a little and if it were a minute shorter would gain a lot.

-Too Many Hands. The only Meisner/Felder composition ever is actually pretty good. Nice acoustic intro and vocals too, again by the former. The twin guitar solos are effective as well.

-Hollywood Waltz. A bit weak and mostly accoustic song. At this point on the cd you start to yearn for some rock and roll, largely absent on it.

-Journey Of The Sorcerer. No one else in the group wanted to include it on the album but its writer (Bernie Leadon) yet it's one of the most interesting tracks on it, mainly because of its experimental nature and also the fact that it's instrumental. Something rarely done by The Eagles, if you don't count on the 48 second Doolin-Dalton from Desperado.

-Lyin' Eyes. Too long and instrumentally boring. Catchy though.

-Take it to the limit. I don't love this one - a too soft ballad. One more time the saving grace is Randy Meisner's vocals.

-Visions. The only Felder-sung track on an Eagles album. More rocking than anything else on it so it sounds like belonging to another cd.

-After The Thrill Is Gone. Not a lame ballad but how many of them already on the cd?

-I Wish You Peace. One of the worst songs to ever find its way to an Eagles album. Bland and unimaginative - you may fall asleep while it plays. I like all other Leadon's contributions to The Eagles but if this is the best he had to offer at the time, his departure was good news on the creative side.

In a nutshell, you may llike this album a)if you are an Eagles nut and b)if you love mellow music to death. Though keen on most of what The Eagles put out, this album leaves me yearning for some fire. I even prefer The Long Run. At least the drums sound like they're supposed to and not like cardboard boxes and there's much more rock and roll than in all the One Of These Nights album.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent panorama of transcriptions.......2007-03-08

Is there any other pianist like Earl Wild? For over 60 years he has proven to be a performing giant, making critics swoon and audiences enthralled. His recording output is even more epoch-making; his preference for peppering some odd obscurities into such recordings is a blessing. But his discography is not as significant as his phenomenal interpretations of what he plays. His ability to render Thalberg, Godowsky, Beethoven, Chopin and Rachmaninov with absolute poise, ravishing passion or thrilling bravura is what makes his recordings such a treasure. So I was enthusiastic when I first saw this particular recording, piano transcriptions that I knew would be given the best artistic treatment.

While there are a few common pieces here (Kreisler-Rach's Liebesleid and Strauss-Tausig's Valse Caprice No. 2), most of these are Wild's own piano transcriptions. His selection of pieces to transcribe is both perplexing and exciting at once: Saint-Saens, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Faure, Rachmaninov, Bach and Chopin. Throughout the entire disc, Wild is spiritually absorbed and technically brilliant. There isn't a single piece here that seems lackluster after Wild's poetic phrasing and refined virtuosity operate together.

I think the most notable works here are the Saint-Saens, Handel, Chopin, Pabst and Rachmaninov. Although I've never heard Saint-Saens's Le Rouet d'Omphale symphonic poem, Wild's engrossing and virtuosic transcription conjures exorbitant drama and lyricism. The central section is rather simplistic for its repetitive theme taken through different keys, but it is still gorgeous and powerful. I found a comment in the liner-notes most interesting regarding this transcription: "As a model Earl Wild does not use Saint-Saens' own rather spare piano version, but returns to the original orchestral score, incorporating many orchestral effects into his 1995 transcription."

Wild's transcription of the Larghetto from Chopin's PC No. 2 enables the piano to exhibit all of the nuances of the orchestral version. But upon hearing it, one forgets that an orchestra was even involved in the first place. It sounds like an original Chopin work, even with the noticeable difference in the agitated central section which once relied on orchestral tremolos. It would be an understatement to say Wild translates the music marvelously to solo piano. In Handel's Harmonious Blacksmith variations, Wild showcases a meticulous pianistic reproduction and doubly impresses with his exuberant performance. The Rachmaninov song "Midsummer Nights" is a rousing and passionate piece that sounds like an original piano work from the Russian master. But Pabst's Tchaikovsky paraphrase is the main blockbuster, full of beautiful intensity and exquisite reinventions of Tchaikovsky's grand themes from Sleeping Beauty. The last piece I'll remark on is Wild's own Reminiscences of Snow White, a peculiar endeavor that leaves me with mixed feelings. It wasn't my favorite piece because it sounded rather banal at times; one might even use the stereotype "elevator music." But relistening to it many times at least reveals to me that Wild superbly unifies Churchill's Disney themes. And he is in his prime when he embellishes the themes with dazzling flights in the style of a 19th century virtuoso. While the rest of these pieces deserve commentary, I think they pretty much speak for themselves.

Bottom line: This repertoire may not look interesting at a first glance, but I implore the reader to sample this. You'll not only find hidden gems (Mozart-Backhaus, Strauss-Tausig and Pabst) but also some glorious transcriptions from Wild's pen (Saint-Saens, Handel and Chopin).

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Grammy winning CD.......1999-12-03

This CD is a reissue of the 1996 SONY disc which won a Grammy (Wild's 80th birthday album). The Grammy awards do not always select the best CDs, but in this case, they really picked a winner. These is one of the finest piano discs in years, and will likely become a classic. Wild's own transcriptions dominate the disc, and they show true originality and charm. I hope Wild records a follow-up to this album with Ivory Records, which has produced a large number of classic piano discs recently. A must have for anyone who enjoys the piano, or the lost art of transcription.
