Queen - Greatest Hits V.3

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Though at first glance a third Queen hits collection might seem to stretch the bounds of credibility, upon reflection this collection may well be the most revealing and compelling of the lot. Gathered from disparate late-career band and solo projects as well as Freddie Mercury tributes with guest vocalists filling the shoes of the band's late singer (Elton John dramatically on "The Show Must Go On," George Michael playfully over-the-top on "Somebody to Love"), it's a collection that coalesces into a thematically and musically satisfying whole. Though oft criticized for their unapologetic excesses, Queen's brash infusion of rock and blues with operatic drama and scale (deliciously exemplified here by "Barcelona," Mercury's duet with diva Montserrat Caballe) was unique. III isn't so much a collection of hits as a well-paced, lovingly compiled homage to Freddie Mercury and his distinctly arch artistic vision. --Jerry McCulley --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

This and the other compilations in this DECCA series are excellent. Much thought went into the choices of recordings, with high caliber artists performing the selections. If only all compilations were this good . . .

      4 out of 5 stars Queen's aspect on Apostacy.......2004-04-02

since I dont see anyone coming around to pin this down - lemme do the
honours by stating this then -- -- moral standards are often associated with
the things of God, and the source for the concept of God - the book that
we've come to know as The Bible. In moral codes such certain human
behaviours are imposed while certain things such as homosexualtity are
condemned there in. I never heard of anyone realising this speaking of the
band Queen - in their debut album they have a wonderful novelty-like tune
called "Jesus", which thus pertains to -Jesus; it sounds as a curio given
with the entire album itself (teemed with the sophomore Queen II album)
being that they're part of the band's earliest works. The said song have a
feel for a song as if coming out from the flower power movement and the
stuff that you could associate with HAIR. However convincing enough that the
song do not refer to anything blasphemous nor profane, the track "Mad The
Swine" which is included in the re-issue of their debut album and not
included in the original release comes as an antedote  to all that "Jesus"
have seem to have promoted salutatorily about all that Christ is imposed
for. A certain kind of tourette like summary within a song is found on May's
"The Prophet Song" from the A Night At The Opera album. Further evidence of
this directly Christ-rejecting stance encountered from the band are found in
the songs "White Man" (fr A Day At Races); "Bicycle Race" (fr JAzz ~ you
know the lines...); and later on "Who Wants To Live Forever", which scorns
nothing more but the whole theme of eternal life as implied in the Bible,
from the soundtrack to the film HIGHLANDER (ie. A Kind Of Magic  album) -
which is a  theme prevalently scattered all across the storyline in the said
movie; and "I Want It All" (fr The Miracle), down to the title track of
Innuendo (see the indicated Bible passages stated below in reflection to

this). It's down to the latter note of "Too Much Love Will Kill You" perhaps by
that then upcoming demise of Freddie Mercury due to his illness that the
topic of eternal life might not seem to be considered as irrelevant at all,
but is rather relevant not to be scoffed at. And furthermore, with the lines
from the song "The Show Must Go On" where Mercury sings 'I guess I'm
learning... I'll soon be turning...' maybe Mercury have finally realised the
error of his ways by reaping out the consequence of it all, so much so with
all of what the scriptures would have to say, but by then in Freddie's
case - it's late. All dead, all dead and gone, dead on time he is. It's a
death on two legs kinda thing - and needless to say (and yet i say it such)
: now we all miss him.
Furthermore, the said song by the way is also featured here culled from a live performance on the FREDDIE MERCURY TRIBUTE CONCERT by the band ramming it up with a heavier level, featuring vocals from what lameness that I'm sorry to say so have come over by old age from no other than the King of Faggotry himself, Mr. Elton John.
      Romans 1:18-20, 24, 26-28; 6:23 Revelation 21:6-8

5 out of 5 stars a great compliment to the first two greatest hits.......2001-01-28

This is a great album. The remakes of older songs and the new songs and the guest artists make for a great listen. Track 3 "Barcelona" is, in my opinon, the best song on the album, it features Mercury singing along with a great opera singer. "Too Much Love Will Kill You" and "Las Palabras de Amor"(the words of love) were my other favorites. Since rap isn't really my thing I didn't like Wyclef Jean's remix of "Another One Bites the Dust", but the other tracks more than make up for it. The album is rounded out by the original recording of "Those Were the Days of Our Lives" and finally "Thank God it's Christmas".

The recordings were great, they are all studio recordings and not live(at least I can't hear any background crowd chatter in any of them). I say, a must own for any one who calls themselves a Queen fan.

--Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Stay with me on this one............2006-06-22

As with any greatest hits compilation, Queen's third volume neglects the true essence of what I believe Queen music to have been (which for me is represented best in the band's first six studio albums, from their dazzling eponymous debut {1973}to the undeniably cool News of the World album {1977)) but, when taken into full account that this is their third installation of chart-toppers (which, surely has to be respected in itself?), the songlist on this volume immediately appeals more to me as a dedicated fan then any of the songs that appeared on the previous collection, Greatest Hits II.

Remember, a greatest hits will never truly represent a band in its (in this case, glorious) entirety, and I stress that the aforementioned studio albums would be my recommended purchases for the new listener, however, Greatest Hits III was my first Queen album, and it quite simply got me hooked, and suprisingly it remains one of my favourite listens. You see, the (to put it simply, mediocre -sorry hardcore Queen fans -) output of Queen in the 1980's was such a far cry from the potential this band could have achieved, and whilst this compilation isn't exactly a showstopper, it is preferable to me because it bizarrely seems to work as a studio album. It draws heavily from the band's last studio album, (which amazingly was put together in the studio using the remaining Freddie Mercury vocal tracks after his death in 1991) Made In Heaven, which certainly had a darker vibe musically, as well I suppose literally, with Freddie having gone and all. This 'darkness' (which harkens back to their earlier albums, most notably Queen II) transpires seamlessly on to this compilation, and other than the remaining 80's songs not on GH2, the tracks that do feature Mercury were all mixed after his death, which make his departure from the music here all the more obvious. It's this vibe that makes this album so startling.

That said, the songs on this volume need to be commended. The Made In Heaven material is really the best of this album, highly polished (which in this case actually works for once...) and undeniably sombre good, strong songs, whilst the remixes provide the familiar listener with a new take on old favourites, and the solo tracks from Freddie and Brian are much appreciated. You can make of this album whatever you like, but it's one of my favourites simply because of what it stands for... This is Queen's last Greatest Hits. Enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Some good songs, but over all a strange selection........2006-06-19

Queen is my absolute favorite band, but this is a very random selection of their songs, with many things that don't belong there at all. For instance, I don't see why anyone would want to hear Elton John singing "The Show Must Go On", not that I have anything against him, but all Queen songs were meant to be sung by Freddie. Same deal with George Michael singing "Somebody to Love", he isn't a bad singer, but he is not Freddie. "Under Pressure" rag mix is just ruining the original song and is completely pointless. Also, I've never found "The Great Pretender" and "Barcelona" to be especially good songs, and "Heaven for Everyone" was sort of overblown. However, "You Don't Fool Me", "Princes of the Universe", "Thank God it's Christmass", and "These are the Days of Our Lives" are all excellent songs. I think that absolute essential Queen cd set to have is "Greatest Hits 1 and 2", and after that if you're a die hard fan like me, you should start collecting the albums or just download the other songs you like from Itunes. A third greatest hits cd would be very hard to make while still pleasing everyone at the same time, because when it come to all of Queen's songs that aren't on "Greatest Hits 1 and 2", there are lots of varying opinions. Even so, if I had to make a third greatest hits cd, it would contain the following songs.

      1.Spread Your Wings
      2.You Don't Fool Me
      3.Stone Cold Crazy
      4.Sheer Heart Attack
      5.The Hitman
6.These are the Days of Our Lives
      7.Princes of the Universe
      8.Get Down, Make Love
      9.'39
      10.Rock it
      11.Dragon Attack
      12.Flick of the Wrist
13.I'm in Love with my Car

2 out of 5 stars A far cry from the cream of Queen's greatest talent.......2006-04-18

This indeed a rather lacklustre offering. Most of the tracks are a far cry from the cream of Queen's greatest talent.
Some of my less favourie songs together with some no-so great 90's remakes.
Concerning the Queen/George Michael remake of Somebody To Love , I think it is abominable to replace Freddie Mercury with George Michael as lead singer-he simply cannot fill Freddie's shoes but then again Fredddie Mercury was Queen.
The only songs here really worth having are Under Pressure (Rah Mix) - Queen/David Bowie , Barcelona - Freddie Mercury/Monserrat Caballe , Too Much Love Will Kill You , You Don't Fool Me , Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love)and These Are The Days Of Our Lives . I would re-package Queen Greatest Hits 3 as following:

      Keep Yourself Alive
      Liar
      The Fairy Feller's Master-Stroke
      Stone Cold Crazy
      Dear Friends
      '39
      Love Of My Life
      Tie Your Mother Down
      Spread Your Wings
      Let Me Entertain You
      Rock It (Prime Jive)
      Las Palabras De Amor
      Tear It Up
These Are The Days Of Our Lives
      You Don't Fool Me
      Barcelona
Too Much Love Will Kill You

1 out of 5 stars Only for money..........2006-04-09

Queen's story stops with album "Made in Heaven", this is my opinion.
All cd's and live performances after 1995 are only to make money.
I'll love Queen's music and Freddie forever... and I really hope that Bryan, Roger and John will stop.
This Greates Hits is useless and without sense.
