The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

It was only a matter of time before SpongeBob Squarepants became a star big enough to pull off a concept album. Where so many other megawatt celebrities, be they living and land-based or fictional and sea-dwelling, can get all high-minded and grand when cobbling together a theme for their music, though, our man Sponge proves he's as humble and porous as ever on The Best Day Ever, a 26-track bonanza that delivers us into WH2O studios for a "live broadcast" from Bikini Bottom. Under the phony programmatic direction of snazzy DJ Al Bacore (get it?), SpongeBob & the Hi-Seas--a motley assemblage of characters including Plankton, Squidward, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Pearl, and Sandy--trot out 13 songs between often gut-busting station-based interstitials (in one, hapless caller Patrick can't figure out he's supposed to turn down his radio to hear). The music and lyrics, if not the intentionally doofusy vocals, are inspired: Brian Wilson (how did they get him to agree to this?) sings backup on "Doin' the Krabby Patty," Flaco Jimenez lends Latin flair squeezebox-style on "Barnacles!," and Tommy Ramone of the Ramones hammers out a punkish percussive number on "Ridin' the Hook." Through it all, even when he's baring his soul in a heartwarming serenade to his tighty whiteys, SpongeBob's nice-guy persona sets a friendly, happy tone: the mood, loud and clear as a seal's bark, is pure best-day-ever celebration; the master of ceremonies works his yellowness, squareness and general dim-wittedness to masterful effect. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever!.......2007-05-27

Get ready for an amazing experience that will change your listening habits....then put on this album. The first song is a mind-blower! "The Best Day Ever" seems like a cute little summer fun song but after you get into it you realize that musically it's really heavy! This is like a Beach Boys song that sucks you in with it's cute little beat and lyric and then knocks you out with it's musical sophistication.
The next song is "Employee Of The Month". This is pure power-pop. The Who circa 1966 meets The Turtles.WOW!!!
"Under My Rock" is sung by Patrick. This is classic garage-rock. Rave-up at the end reminds me of The Count Five.
"My Tighty Whiteys" is simply the best song and best production that has been released since the hey day of the Brill Building. Again...this seems simple but it's super sophisticated! My vote for best bridge since "Wouldn't It Be Nice?". Andy Paley and Tom Kenny are a great writing team! This is what's missing from pop music!
There is something for every pop music fan on this album. Guest stars include...Brian Wilson , Mandy Barnett, Nino Tempo , Tommy Ramone, Flaco Jimenez, James Burton , N.R.B.Q., Tommy Morgan , Jerry "The Geator" Blavett
etc..
I never get tired of this record. It's on in my car all the time. I've given it to all my hip friends and they all love it , as do their young kids and their stoner , college-age kids!
It's a HIT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever!!!.......2007-04-03

We went to a live performance by Tom Kenny, Mr. Lawrence and the guys who made this record down at Amoeba Records in Hollywood. It was fabulous!! The songs are WONDERFUL!!! If you want to get into a good mood, buy this album! The songs are like 60's beach music, which is a perfect fit for Spongebob. My favorite song is Employee of the month, but I also love Plankton's "You Will Obey!!" with it's explosion at the end. The whole album is done like a radio show. My daughter loves to say AAAAL Bacore!!! Who is the Tuneful Tuna, a dj. This CD is great for the entire family and I give it my highest recommendation.

One of the most popular touring acts of the '70s and '80s, the Beach Boys nonetheless found sales of their new music disappointing for much of those decades. Their Brother Records imprint was stamped on some of the best albums of their "mature" period--Sunflower, Surf's Up, and the one-of-a-kind The Beach Boys Love You--but earlier classics such as "Surfin' U.S.A." and "Good Vibrations" remained their most popular work. This third volume of greatest hits collects 20 Brother cuts, including the occasional chart success ("Rock & Roll Music," the twice-released "Sail On, Sailor," "It's OK," "Getcha Back"). A few lesser-known winners ("This Whole World," "Long Promised Road," "Honkin' Down the Highway") provide welcome highlights. Still, the inclusion of one too many remade oldies on the disc's second half underscores the Beach Boys' loss of creative energy by 1980. --Rickey Wright

4 out of 5 stars SURFING WATERS BOTH DEEP AND SHALLOW.......2006-03-06

THE BEACH BOYS are one of those bands that have provided the soundtrack to my life. Growing up in Southern California, their music really does become a part of one's experiences. For instance, I can't hear 'Help Me, Rhonda' or 'The Girls On The Beach' without recalling my years of bodysurfing the waves near Santa Monica's lifeguard station #26. 'Good Vibrations' automatically transports me back to Santa Monica High School - located conveniently 2 blocks from the Pacific Ocean. (Sometimes the sound of the surf called more insistently than the school bell did.) Samohi's official school song, 'Hymn Of Praise' written by Ken Darby from the Class of 1927, starts out, "Oh Samohi, dear old Samohi / Queen of the setting sun / For you we toil, for you our banners fly / We win for you when victory's won!" But every pep rally I attended from '74 through '77 ended more "excitationally" with...

Good, good, good, good vibrations
(oom bop bop)
I'm pickin' up good vibrations
She's giving me excitations
(oom bop bop)

'In My Room' humorously reminds me of the time in 1986 when I found it on a jukebox in a Reno lounge and drove every other patron out of the place with it. I was in the bartender's doghouse, but what are ya gonna do with a liquidated cowboy who wants to hear 'In My Room'.....18 times? And while the richly melancholic 'The Warmth Of The Sun' is my all-time favorite Beach Boys song, there is a lot to be said for many of the tracks found on this compilation.

This is the final part of Capitol's Beach Boys Greatest Hits trilogy series. This one - which features 20 of The Boys' late period minor hits and nonhits - will be ignored by the casual Beach Boys fan, and that is an unfortunate mistake. True, these "leftovers" were recorded and released after the height of the band's popularity and creative success according to the music critics, but the Beach Boys, though they had largely moved away from their gorgeous and complex trademark vocal harmony arrangements, were still making some magic music. And some of it as sensitive and more intense than anything that preceded it.

For every lightweight and silly 'SUSIE CINCINNATI' and 'PEGGY SUE' on this collection, you'll also find a brooding 'TIL I DIE', or nostalgic 'DISNEY GIRLS (1957)', or yearning 'SURF'S UP.' No, we didn't need another version of 'ROCK AND ROLL MUSIC' or 'COME GO WITH ME' and yet, I'd hate to have missed out on the world-weary, but defiant 'LONG PROMISED ROAD', or the intricate protest song, 'THE TRADER', with its catchy movements that force my toes to tap or my feet to stomp.

Some of these songs, being more melodically subtle and lacking that instantly recognizable sound of The Boys' early hits, will require a bit more patience from the listener, but with time, that open-minded patience will certainly be rewarded. Of course, 'SAIL ON, SAILOR' you probably already know (I invented my pen name while it was playing through the sound system in a Coco's Restaurant); the lovely 'GOOD TIMIN'' is reminiscent of that lush harmonizing adopted from The Four Freshmen during The Beach Boys' infancy. And the well-chosen closer, 'CALIFORNIA DREAMIN'', with its urgent tenor sax solo actually eclipses the classic Mamas And Papas version. (Yeah, I couldn't believe it either!)

If all you desire is a balanced career retrospective of some of The Beach Boys' best music on a single disc, then go with 'Classics: Selected By Brian Wilson'. But the REAL fan will want the 3-part Capitol compilation series: 'The Greatest Hits, Vol 1: 20 Good Vibrations'; 'The Greatest Hits, Vol. 2: 20 More Good Vibrations'; and this disc, 'THE GREATEST HITS, VOL. 3: BEST OF THE BROTHER YEARS, 1970 - 1986.'

[*This review is dedicated to my new friend, the surf-riding, beach bike path-riding, and book-writing, MYSTICAL MARY. Evidently she was too shy to approach me on the beach bike path in 1989 to ask, "Riding my way?" She waited seventeen years and until I was living in Airheadzona, and she in Joisey, before saying anything to me. However, Mystical Mary is one of my favorite living writers, and I think you're going to be hearing about her before too long.]

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Group Ever.......2005-01-02

California Saga. When I first heard it in my early twenties I was shocked. I bought two or three copies of "Holland" and wore them out. Glad I finally got this cd with some of their very finest music. It's sad that they were on the decline by the early seventies, but what they left was amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Ed Glasner is an Idiot.......2004-08-13

The guy clearly knows not of what he speaks. This disc covers some of the most adventurous music the Beach Boys recorded. That they weren't exactly "hits" in chart placement certainly doesn't diminish their value. Indeed it is because of people like Ed Glasner who completely misunderstand the work that this music wasn't more financially successful for the group.

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting Look At An Interesting Time In Their Career.......2004-07-20

By the 1970s', The Beach Boys' career had gone downhill. Once a surefire toop 10 hit machine, their singles barely made the top 30 and their albums fared even worse. So a hits collection from this time period may seem like an odd product. But it's a good way to explore this underrated period in their career since it includes several underrated gems and besides, one song here did manage to it the top five.

The first half (tracks 1 - 11) covers1970 - 1973. This is when they recorded much of their best material. Songs like "Add Some Music To Your Day", "This Whole World", Bruce Johnston's lush "Disney Girls", Brian Wilson's chilling "'Til I Die", Carl's magnum opus "The Trader" and the robust "Sail On Sailor" all could've been bigger hits than they were. "Surf's Up", the title track from their 1971 masterpiece, is the best song here. Starting off with an urgent vocal by Carl, it soon drifts into Brian's 1967 demo of the song, with its eerie piano and Brian's somber vocal.

The second half (tracks 12 - 20) covers 1976 - 86. It starts off with their huge comeback hit, a cover of Chuck Berry's "Rock And Roll Music". It was good but the Chuck Berry material should have ended with "Surfin' USA" and "Fun, Fun, Fun". The next song, "It's OK", was the single released after "Rock And Roll Music". While it wasn't as big a hit (Billboard # 29), I like it better. It's fun and orginal. "Honkin' Down The Highway" is a great Al Jardine number with a cool drum intro and a nice, spacey intro. The 1978 cover of "Peggy Sue" is surprisingly good. Unlike other covers, they stay in vein with the original recording and they succeed. Had this song been released during their heyday, it could have been a bigger hit. But you can't judge a song solely on its chart performance. 1979's top 40 hit "Good Timin'" is, in my opinion, their last masterpiece. With their harmonies evoking earlier songs like "Surfer Girl" and Carl's impassioned vocal, it truly is a marvelous studio creation. By jumping ahead to 1981, they leave out the number 12 hit "Beach Boys" medley, but that would be unnecessary since all of those songs made it onto "Greatest Hits, Volume 1". Instead, we get their cover of the Del - Vikings' 1957 hit "Come Go With Me". The song, a top 20 hit, is better than the original because of the harmonies and its beat. "Goin' On" is an odd number vaguely sounding a bit like Queen's "Somebody To Love" with its rising/fading/rising again/ading again and so on and so forth harmonies. "Getcha Back", a top 30 hit from 1985, is a great combination of old Beach Boys with modern sounds, its drum intro eminiscent of Dennis Wilson's. Finally, there's another pgood cover. "California Dreamin'" (with a haunting 12 - string guitatr provided by Byrd Roger McGuinn) is in vein of the Mamas and Papas hits.

Overall, a good collection that I recommend to all music fans. You will find yourself listening to it more than once. Also get their studio albums, inclduing "Pet Sounds" and "Friends"/"20/20", as well as both their boxed sets.

2 out of 5 stars Either Love It Or Hate It.......2004-01-19

Admittedly, I really used to like this album. It was this album that got me into The Beach Boys' music. I used to play it all the time in my car. Then, as I got more and more into their music and I heard stuff from "Pet Sounds", "Friends" and "Sunflower", I realized that this album was nothing more than a cheap way to cash in on the success of The Beach Boys.

For a greatest hits collection, the song selection can hardly be beat - "California Girls", "Surfer Girl", "Fun Fun Fun", "Wouldn't It Be Nice", etc. There all here. But the complaint is for what's not here. With 10 tracks that equal a running time of about 20 minutes, there was enough room to include "Little Deuce Coupe", "Shut Down", "Surfin' Safari", "In My Room", "God Only Knows", "Surfin'", "409", "Little Saint Nick", and "Sloop John B." to make it a much more complete collection of hits.

If you want a single disc collection of The Beach Boys' greatest hits, then seek out "Sounds Of Summer". It has all 10 of the tracks on this cd, as well as 20 other hit singles. It also has better sound and liner notesby an experienced rock and roll researcher. Take my advice (and the advice of every other reviewer who gave this a one or two star review) and skip this album.

5 out of 5 stars A cheap collection of classic songs.......2000-12-31

That one star review really annoyed me. All this is is a cheap way to obtain ten of the Beach Boys classics on one CD. Their early surf period is when they did their best songs, after that Brian Wilson's creativity fizzled. I'd rather hear Fun, Fun, Fun, Barbera-Ann and Wouldn't It Be Nice than stuff like I Can Hear Music, Kokomo or Then I Kissed Her. These are pure classics, and to be honest if you think such a veteran band, now lacking all three Wilsons, would be able to match these records if they re-entered the studio, you're living in cloud cuckoo land. These could well be among the band's ten best songs, though why God Only Knows isn't hear I don't know, and for such a low price..... But hey, I was forgetting- 'About 90% of this album is from the early 60's surfing career, plus a few songs from Pet Sounds'. Aside from the shaky maths of that statement, teh fact is their best songs were from said early surf period, and almost everything after Pet Sounds was tripe. 20 Golden Greats is a better set, but for the price this is an ideal introduction.

1 out of 5 stars You can't cover the career of the Beach Boys in 10 songs........2000-11-27

As of this year, the Beach Boys have been together for 39 years. They have put out around 50 albums, not including greatest hits albums such as this. One of their albums has been called by MOJO magazine the best album of all time. All of their founding members, and two of the later members have put out solo efforts. They were in the top 5 best selling bands of the 60's, and have had many hits outside of the 60's. 10 songs?

If you want a greatest hits for the Beach Boys, try the Good Vibrations box set. That is about 8 hours of music, and it isn't nearly big enough. The best thing you can do is buy all the albums.

If you only want a slight intruduction, try something else. Anything else. About 90% of this album is from the early 60's surfing career, plus a few songs from Pet Sounds, the crowning achievement.

Capitol needs to learn to stop all these stupid greatest hits packages, and pressure the band to stop living off nostalgia and make a CD. At least Brian is still being productive, the genius that he is. It would be really cool if he formed a band.

Good luck Brian, and everybody out there, stay away from this and go buy Pet Sounds.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL But Short.......2000-02-28

The first BEACH BOYS tape I ever heard! It's a wonderful tape (and I'm mad because there are two tracks on the CD edition that don't come with the tape--you see, I don't have a CD player....) But wonderful songs that really brighten your spirits, no matter how short it is!

2 out of 5 stars Great Music But A Really Short CD.......1999-10-04

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The strongest collection of their hits.......2003-03-22

So many of their songs are well known, and not just to those who were raised on this music, but to people of all ages. Part of the reason may be that surf music is inextricably linked with the sixties - you won't find any modern equivalent.

Here you get the classic songs they wrote themselves - California girls, Fun fun fun, Good vibrations, Little deuce coupe, Help me Rhonda, God only knows, Darlin', I get around and Wouldn't it be nice to name just a few - together with songs that they covered in their own unique way - Do you wanna dance, Then I kissed her, Sloop John B and Cotton fields.

There have been plenty of compilations of their music down the years and will be many more. Given the number of classic songs they recorded, picking just thirty inevitably means that some great songs get left out. Yet, this compilation is as good as any you are ever likely to find. For absolute perfection, I would have preferred In my room or Bluebirds over the mountain (perhaps the best two songs not included) to Caroline no, but this is a minor quibble.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of the Beach Boys on One CD.......2002-11-24

To find a CD with 30 hits of the Beach Boys was very hard, until I found "The Very Best of The Beach Boys". The sound is excellent and al the songs that are included here, are excellent too.Starting with "Good Vibrations", "California girls", "I get around", and ending with the great "Kokomo", each and every one of the songs will move us to another time, in the sixties or even in the seventies. And here is included too one of the finest and more beautiful songs ever wroten... "God only knows". I only miss two or three songs from the Beach Boys Album "L. A"., that I guess they had to be included here. But, even so, this is collector's CD, and I'm so glad that I have it.

5 out of 5 stars best of the beach boys.......2005-10-02

i am sure most beach boys fans will have all these songs considering this is the umpteenth repackaging of them. However i have to give it 5 stars because these are timeless.Leading off with "fun, fun, fun" and finishing with "be true to your school"you can't help but sing along, tap your feet,& dance in your seat. The only thing maybe they could have differently was replace "surfer girl"with 1 more uptempo song.I love the song but the other 9 songs are mid-uptempo tunes,so the ballad doesn't seem to fit as well as another uptempo song would.
