5 out of 5 stars Great advice for safe dating/courting/friendships.......2007-04-11

This book was life changing. Coming out of an abusive situation which led to a divorce, I knew I needed help if I were ever to marry again! I figured that it was best to figure out why the abuse happened, as well as what I had done wrong in my choice of mate. This book was SO insightful that I wish it had been in print before my first marriage.

As it happens, I got into a dating relationship much sooner than I had expected. I had figured that I needed at LEAST 2 years to regroup before even planning to begin dating again. "Fate" had other plans. I got into a very bizarre and abusive dating relationship with a man who was unlike anyone I had ever known in that he manipulated me, lied, and had the gall to accuse me of trying to control him! Soon I began to feel those awful, trapped feelings from before.

I kept trying to step back and just slow things down (since he wanted to date me AND someone else at the same time and I happen to think one should be patient enough to date only one person at a time for the sake of other people's feelings). Part of the reason it felt so exhausting was the way he would talk about really wanting to marry me and then in the next breath tell me about a date he planned with the other gal he was just starting to see. When I challenged him about the hypocrisy and cruelty of playing with my feelings, he would accuse me of being controlling. When I tried to just be "coffee friends" until he decided how he felt about the other gal, he would accuse me of being controlling and not wanting the best for his son and himself. God had to finally wrest him away from me by having him dump me without telling me and then find out in a month or so that he was planning to marry yet a different gal in 4 months. Praise God for His mercy AND for THIS BOOK!

After the fact I read this book and it was like a bolt of lightning sending me back to reality. NO, it hadn't been wrong for me to tell him how I only felt comfortable dating one person at a time and only dating people who felt the same way. YES, I had been right to be bothered by the "little" lies he told me about his whereabouts. And YES, I was really wrong to have felt so desperate that I was so unattractive and getting old so fast (at 44--LOL) that I was not taking the time to think things through and to insist on an equal footing in our relationship.

I have given a copy of this book to several people, including to my own handsome but single sons:) One of them only barely escaped from a very controlling girl when she began to press him to change his college plans and get married a year early, before graduating from college and before having a very clear idea of what first job he wanted to pursue! He feels SO free having applied the principles of this book.

My story has a happy ending in that several months after the end of that nutty relationship I met a very honest, polite, considerate, generous, kind, affectionate, hard working man who just adores me:) It was a whirlwind romance, but the RIGHT kind. We are coming up on our 4th wedding anniversary and the 5th anniversary of our first email and first date. God is good and this book is the kind of great advice one would hope to get from BOTH one's mother and father (if one were smart enough to LISTEN to them--LOL).

I recommend this as essential, insightful reading for guys and gals from age 12 to age 100! If you follow these guidelines I can almost guarentee that you will NEVER get yourself into another abusive relationship. Just make sure that YOU are the same kind of person that the book discusses so that you may bless your date as well as he/she may bless you! Happy dating:)

This is ALSO a great book for picking out your friends! These authors have written several other great books such as Changes That Heal, Boundaries, Boundaries in Marriage, Boundaries With Children, and a book which I think is called 12 Things That Can Drive You Crazy. God bless you!

5 out of 5 stars A must-read in today's dating scene.......2007-02-28

This is a great book. If I try to tell you all the reasons why, I'll just end up copying it word for word. So I will attempt to highlight a few of the book's strengths. First, I liked that it doesn't make dating bad ipso facto. A lot of dating is sketch in this day & age but dating in and of itself is not, and can, in fact, be good. The authors, who are both Christian psychologists, illustrate how dating is a helpful aid in the marriage discernment process, and how at the same time, it can be a tool for our own personal spiritual growth.

It is balanced between evaluating the person you are dating and evaluating your own character and what you bring to the relationship. It is sometimes tempting for Christians to seek perfection in a date/future spouse, but the authors help the readers to refocus their sights on righteousness, not perfection, reminding us that we need to take the logs out of our own eyes before we deal with the specks in others.

The book is nicely organized into 4 parts: You and Your Boundaries, Whom Should I Date?, Solving Dating Problems: When You're Part of the Problem, and Solving Dating Problems: When Your Date Is the Problem. As an added bonus, there are Take-Away Tips at the end of every chapter that summarize the main points just outlined.

I know for my part that this book has helped me understand past relationships, as well as discern for the future. It is a welcome antidote to the prevailing theories of love, sex, and relationships. I recommend it without reservation.

5 out of 5 stars Safeguarding the sacred soul of self and others.......2007-02-21

This book, now abridged in audio, cuts to the heart of relationship issues. Fundamentally, in relationships, many problems surfacing years into the future, can be prevented by focusing in on our own and our prospective mate/date's spiritual character and ability to grow. This book tackles the fundamental reason that many relationships do not suceed, a failure to establish the boundaries that safeguard the most precious soul. It is a book to give, to read and to ponder, about valuing the self and others as sacred creations.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2007-02-11

Dr. Cloud's book is excellent! He uses easygoing conversational language that keeps the reading light. I am reading and discussing this title with my girlfriend and it has led to some fun/interesting conversations. Through sharing this book we have learned much about each other, grown individually and grown as a couple.

The author also uses caring language and helps you understand mistakes you may have made or continue to make in relationships. Dr. Cloud may confirm your thoughts and leanings or give you better and newer understanding of why we do what we do in our dating relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book...no matter how long you've been dating...........2006-10-25

I was sort of peeved that I didn't read this book sooner, definately could have helped me avoid so many relational disasters. Some parts of the book were painful but oh so necessary to read. It helped me make real changes in my thinking and behavior and gave me a terrific insight into what to look for in those I date.

I read and RE-read so much of this book, it's pages are dog-eared. You won't regret buying this one. It helped me greatly. I'm now happily married and my husband and I both read this book prior to finding each other. Needless to say, we had much to talk about when we did finally meet and this book was at the center of it.

5 out of 5 stars A powerful message for our generation.......2007-06-14

As teen myself, with a heart to challenge my generation to excellence, Zach Hunter is a warmly-welcomed voice of vision, maturity, and biblical truth. His book speaks to his peers right where they are, and inspires them higher.

To the previous reviewer: Zach has demonstrated the ability to work with others to accomplish social good without compromising the convictions that motivate him to act. That is to be commended, not criticized.

3 out of 5 stars Great concept, but too preachy.......2007-06-04

When I first heard of Zach Hunter and sought out this book, I was very impressed by his cause and ambition. That remains unchanged after reading. He truely is a great role model for the up and coming generations. However, I was discouraged to find so much reference to religion, god's plan, and passages of scripture throughout the book. I understand this is where Zach must get his strength and values, however he needs to make it clear that even an athiest can be passionate for social justice. He should just stick to the historical and sociological implications of slavery, rather than try to convince the reader what a "true christian" he is.

5 out of 5 stars Zach is my new hero.......2007-03-16

Never has such a bold message flowed with such simple power. Zach will change your life but more importantly it will change the lives of the hundreds of thousands of slaves living in despair. This is an easy-to-read and easy-to-live message filled with quotes, testimonies, and straight up wisdom from 15year old. Zach is one of my new heroes.

4 out of 5 stars Porpoise Diving Life March Book Review.......2007-03-13

[...]

Staying true to our March 2007 PDL theme ([...]), I think it's safe to say that this young man has laid down his net and is moving headlong into some pretty powerful "follower-ship." Just in case you were wondering, Zach wants to end slavery and human trafficking in his lifetime. He's making a huge difference by creating awareness of a very dire crisis in our world, speaking before thousands of people and simply stepping up to the plate to do his part.

Zach's book is a very engaging and educational read, though it always feels true to the style of a normal 15-year-old. Yes, it's geared toward a younger generation, but the beauty of his writing style is that any normal kid his age (or any adult, for that matter) will see himself/herself as a potential agent of change. Because he's not lofty in his approach, what he's done comes off as doable for the rest of us too.

If you have kids, you'll want to buy this book--if only so that Zach can be an inspiration to them. And maybe in the process, we'll have more kids like him springing up to embrace a hurt world (I think everyone would agree that this would be a good thing). Even if you don't have kids, buy this book and you might be surprised to find his passion is contagious enough for you to change the world, too.

5 out of 5 stars Really cool book.......2007-02-20

The author seems like a down-to-earth, normal 15 year-old. Oh, yeah -- and he wants to end slavery around the world in his lifetime. Only problem, there are 27 million slaves in captivity around the world. Zach communicates with passion the stories of people who have inspired him to lead a global effort to fund the rescue of slaves. Young people will be similarly inspired; adults will be challenged and educated, we all may be changed. Get this book for every kid you know -- this generation will believe they can change the world.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars definitely worth reading.......2007-02-20

My fiancee and I are in the process of using this book for our pre-marital counseling. It is good, it definitely has some good suggestions and is very thought provoking. Some of the exercises in the workbook are a bit rigid and unclear but overall I have found it to be great. Covers a variety of topics from communication to misunderstandings to intimacy.
A good investment.

This is a great book. Because its written by a couple, it is logical for both men and women. It gives you a very realistic of marriage and what to expect. It's not preachy, just practical.

5 out of 5 stars Learning about each other.......2007-01-10

You will definitely need the actual book to use the workbooks. My fiance and I have been working through the lessons and are about halfway through the workbooks. The best thing about the exercises is that there are so many things about my future wife that I didn't know, especially in regards to how she thinks and feels about certain aspects of life. We are becoming closer as we're beginning to understand each other at a deeper level. I'm learning more about how women communicate and how they really aren't able to come to grips with exactly how we operate either. The exercises vary from childhood influences to budgeting to love languages. We look forward to each time we work through the lessons. I highly recommend them for any couple preparing for marriage.

    Book Description

The model of the traditional family is breaking down, children barely into their teens are experimenting with sex, and half of all marriages in developed countries end in divorce. In Love, Freedom, and Aloneness Osho explains why these phenomena are happening and how they can actually be viewed as a cause for celebration rather than worry. In a post-ideological world, where all the old moralities are clearly out of date, we have a golden opportunity to redefine and revitalize the very foundations of our lives.iterally starting fresh with ourselves and our relationships to others, and defining fulfillment and success for the individual and for society means understanding the new realities of our basic condition. Until we learn to live by ourselves and withourselves, we will deny ourselves the possibility of finding love and happiness with someone else. This book is a provocation and a guide for that fresh start.

5 out of 5 stars Osho is great for 3.5 reasons.......2007-03-26

I love OSHO. Yes, he is a very smart, interesting, and well-spoken guru. Let's all rejoice that he wrote so many books.

Here are the 3.5 reasons why OSHO rules and you should really get this book.

    1. Osho is funny. He'll have you cracking up as you learn about how to be a master in bed or how to be less needy.

    2. Osho reminds us that the Universe is naturally nice and wants us to be happy. Wow, that's so simple by easy to forget.

    3. Osho gets us to do something instead of just think about it. Do something and learn how it feels. That's true learning.

3.5 Osho teahces us that it's beautiful to be alone. So enjoy it!

5 out of 5 stars Read This and be FREE.......2007-01-05

This book is now my "the one book I'll ever need".
Osho does NOT try to convert you. Pah! He invites you to know yourself and be free and this book has totally redefined my old, sick ideas about love. My beloved and I are happier now than ever.. truly... open your mind and sprout two wings-"aloneness and love" ; ) I'd love to have cases of these and walk around tossing them to strangers., friends, neighbors, lovers and YOU.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for healthy relationships.......2006-08-15

This book describes and educates what a healthy long term love relationship looks and feels like. Many people do not have any idea. Instead of wanting a relationship out of "neediness" people can experience a "fullness to share."

5 out of 5 stars Hopeless romantic? Try not to read this book.............2006-02-17

I haven't finished reading this book (3/4 of the way), but i decided to give back to the community that has assisted me so much with my choice of books..... that and Amazon have a new 'bullying' system of getting reviews out of customers. Anyway, this book is really an eye opener. All the ideas of love that i got from books, films and even my parents now seem so silly and strange- like, where did they get them from? Osho explores what the general public see as love (romantic love), and another love that gives the impression of being a religious love at the get-go (i say that because i've always seen 'unconditional love' as something for the saints and celibates only), but is actually the most important love that we actually need in our lives. A selfish love that is actually unselfish. I wonder how relationships would be if we all possessed this type of love for ourselves..... would we even waste our time on relationships? Probably, not if they're the type that bring attachment. Osho discusses why most relationships and marriages are doomed from the beginning. "Let there be spaces in your togetherness"- very deep quote. He does not bring an authoritarian tone to any aspect of love; all he wants us to have is understanding..... understand the laws of existence and then do what you want.

His views on sex are amazing, just like his views on religion. I suspect both views were responisble for most of the controversy surrounding him- Increase sexual freedom while reducing religion (especially Christianity)? I think Bush and a few teleevangelists would probably not think twice about killing him on live tv if they got the chance. But he's dead so they can't. And his words live on.........

I'm probably a poor reviewer, but do not let that stop you from reading this book, if you ever wondered if there is more to love, or if you want understanding on why people still risk all for love even though it never seems to last (with one partner)
this is definitely the book for you. Just remember to soak everything in before putting on your worn out rationalization cap. Logic is not everything.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful period now begins of your reading and seeking........2004-01-16

If you are new to Osho then you are in for the most beautiful period of your reading and seeking. Although this seems a bold statement, I feel it is understated. In this one book one will learn a lifestyle that is natural and flowing. There are no rules, no golden gems of a 10 point plan. What you get is how to balance a lifestyle of meditation and love. The polarities. Aloneness and relationships. To seemlessly dance between the two. The style is very flowing like a conversation. This is no accident. The book is put together from talks that Osho has given. Some 5000 hours of recordings have been taken. If you loved Eckhart Tolle's the power of now and wish for more reading of that quality, you will find Osho books equally as good. I've read the full 6 books of the insight series. All are brilliant. I recommend Sex matters highly as well. Osho Zen and Osho Tao are also brilliant. However, if I was asked to recommend one essential book for someone new to Osho it would be Love, Freedom and Aloneness. It's hard to really review Osho because you are not quite sure what's really going on. Just by reading you feel something is happening. That something is a resounding "A-ha" to it. I've read carlos Castaneda all of them, I've read most of Stuart Wilde's books which I thought could not be surpassed yet Osho has done this with ease. With Osho there is no fighting within. You start with were you are and remove things very gently. He loves to bring a gentleness to the way you treat life and especially yourself. I've never thought of brushing teeth violently. However, when you compare that to brushing teeth gently, you begin to understand how you treat yourself. A small violence, but still it is there. Osho takes you on a journey of Man, politics and religion, he unravels the contradictions and the subtle cunning under-current of our politicians and religious leaders. He cannot unravel the mystery of life, he embraces the mystery and uncertainty. What I have noticed when reading is the fluidity of the words, sentences and chapters. You know that there is no-one there. Osho stepped aside many years ago. The words are straight from the great unknown, without filters, pure and brilliant. He was a truely brilliant, intelligent man and yet highly evolved in his spirituality or religiousness[not in the sense that we normally associate with this word. Uncluttered with religious dogma.] as he liked to often use. Once you read his biography you will come to know why you perhaps have not heard much about this man. What he has to say in his books, if understood and applied, will make each person a tower of immortal strength that no force on earth will be able to control. That's why the man was banned from so many developed countries towards the end of his life. His words are all there to lead you to becoming enlightened without an intermediatory. This would be a state of such peace tranquility and blissfulness, that the thought of becoming enlightened doesn't scare me any more.

    Book Description

Social visionary Joseph Chilton Pearce’s indictment of cultural imprinting as the cause of humankind’s cruel and violent behavior

    • Refutes the Neo-Darwinist assumption that violence is inherent in humanity

    • Identifies religion as the sustaining force behind our negative cultural imprinting

    • Shows how infant-adult interactions unconsciously block the creative spirit

We are all too aware of the endless variety of cruel and violent behavior reported to us in the media, reminded daily that in every corner of the world someone is suffering or dying at the hands of another. We have to ask: Is this violence and cruelty endemic to our nature? Are we, at our foundation, really so murderous? In The Death of Religion and the Rebirth of Spirit, Joseph Chilton Pearce, life-long advocate of human potential, sounds an emphatic and convincing no.

Pearce explains that beneath our awareness, culture imprints a negative force-field that blocks the natural rise of the spirit toward its innate nature of love and altruism. Further, he identifies religion as the primary cultural force behind this negative imprinting. Drawing from recent neuroscience, neurocardiology, cultural anthropology, and brain development research, Pearce explains that the key to reversing this trend can be found in the interaction between infants and adults. The adult mind-set effectively compromises the infant’s neural and hormonal interactions between the heart and the higher evolutionary structures of the developing brain, thus keeping us centered primarily in our most primitive and defensive neural foundations, generation after generation. Pearce shows us that if we allow the intelligence of the heart to take hold and flourish, we can reverse this unconscious loss of our true nature.

5 out of 5 stars It's a pick recommended for any spirituality collection.......2007-06-09

The Death of Religion and the Rebirth of Spirit: A Return to the Intelligence of the Heart could've been featured in our New Age column but deserves wider mention here for its far-reaching survey blending philosophy, religion and sociology. The study begins with a survey of violence in human society and the question of whether cruelty is part of human nature - and argues that the roots of human behavior aren't violent, but a cultural imprint. Chapters use recent neuroscience, cultural anthropology and brain development research to explore the violent trends, spiritual understanding, and how to reverse violence to achieve a higher level of being. It's a pick recommended for any spirituality collection - particularly at the college level - strong on added cultural analysis.

    3 out of 5 stars I've been here before.......2007-05-13

I have been reading Joseph Chilton Pearce for years beginning with "Crack in the Cosmic Egg". His work has been very valuable to me because he explains the spiritual search in ways that are understandable and not all woo woo. This book seemed to me to pretty much cover territory that I was familiar with from previous books. His ideas about the proper birthing and raising of children are important and probably will never have a wide following because of the strength of cultural ways of doing things (another topic that he is very good on). I think this book would be very interesting to someone who had never read any other of his works.

5 out of 5 stars Manifesto of a Spritual (R)evolution.......2007-04-12

Beware! The photo of the author on the book jacket is deceptive. It pictures a soulful, Quaker like grandfather--when all the time the contents of his book are loaded with intellectual hand grenades aimed at the very heart of our culture!

I began writing this review in the usual manner, underlining a phrase here, a word there, scribbling little notes at corners, on the edge--you know, the usual. But after a couple pages I saw that practically every word, every phrase was highlighted, and that there were copious notes all over the place. The book contains so much knowledge, so much insight, and addresses so many of the most vital subjects of life--that to attempt restricting myself to a few ideas here and there seemed almost sacrilegious.

And in the most positive sense this book IS sacrilegious.

In his call for humans to approach the next step of evolution, JC Pearce challenges us to overcome the greatest obstacle to that evolution--our very culture based on organized religion and orthodox science, that in turn arise from humanity's apparent need for PREDICTION and CONTROL. The author is such a master of phraseology that he'll have you convinced in a matter of a few pages that, yeah, they really ARE holding us back.

Pearce is no mere iconoclast--he skillfully demonstrates that the natural replacement for these cultural misconceptions exists and has existed all around us from the beginning of our collective jump from chimp to human (via the common shrew we are now told.) The author illustrates the power & biological source of both the individual & collective creative process, and how they interconnect in "fields of mind." We go along with the author on a developmental human journey from pre-natal conditions, thru birth and from there to the many stages that, where they should release ever higher levels of freedom & pleasure, in reality bind us ever tighter to conformity, frustration & social violence.

And never fear--just because THE DEATH OF RELIGION is a mental revelation, it's a pleasure to read. The writer's source material is life itself & is a record of every day situations and their evolutionary potential.

Reading THE DEATH OF RELIGION allegorically feels like lifting a boulder from one's very soul.

This is one of the most relevant books of our time.

    It's a stunning achievement.

    Product Description

A book that claims with such clarity that 'physical' reality is merely an illusion that only exists in our brain. Fantastic? Sure it is. But David Icke's idea, presented in a way that everyone can understand, is a life-changing exposure of both the illusion we believe to be 'real' and the way this illusion is generated and manipulated to imprison us in a false reality. Icke says we 'live' in a 'holographic internet' in that our brains are connected to a central 'computer' that feeds us the same collective reality that we decode from waveforms and electrical signals into the holographic 3D 'world' that we all think we see.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Freeing........2007-05-19

A helpful reminder of the Reality of the World. I love to read things that affirm the Truth.

3 out of 5 stars Lizards, Jews, Bush and the News!.......2007-04-20

If you have ever read any of David Icke's books, you may feel that the first half of this book is just a rehash of some of his other works. Edited down a bit, but not quite enough for my liking.

Like some of the other reviewers, I really have a hard time taking someone seriously that talks about lizard people! But then I turned to page 166 and lo and behold there was a picture of David standing there in the nude, with his Lizard dangling down!!! Sheesh... I'm a believer now! And on top of it I'll be having nightmares about it for the next year!

I must admit though, he did a real good job on religion bashing. And explaining to the reader why spirituality and religion just can't co-exist in peace. He not only hammered away on Judaism, Christianity, Islam and the Catholicism, he also took a good shot at the New-Agers.

Also this book explains why the Education and Health Systems are detrimental to man-kind. What is wrong with society. And how the Illuminate are behind it all.

I kept finding tid bits of information in the book that I already read in other books. The other books may have given a more in-depth look at certain subjects, but by reading this book you will avoid having to read countless other books.

If wasn't for the Lizard people and David's Balls, I would'a gave this book 4 stars!

3 out of 5 stars Hits and Misses.......2007-02-08

The Hits with this book for me involve references to the Holographic Universe, by Michael Talbot, and Castaneda, and the whole idea of the world as illusion, or matrix, which I believe carries much weight. I think that ultimately Icke has changed the focus in this book from previous ones to the more positive idea that Love is the greatest reality. I agree! Without knowing it, I think, Icke in his words echoes many concepts contained in Yoga, Buddhism, and (especially, I think) Gnosticism (his reptiles sounds a lot like the archons, his matrix the creation of the gnostic Demiurge).

The Misses are big, though. How is it that Icke says that the way out of the matrix is by simply understanding that we are Infinite Consciousness... and presto: we're free! Yet at the same time, he dedicates two entire chapters to demonstrating that all religions and new age movements are simply mechanisms of division and control on the part of the Matrix itself? I think he is spot-on when he points out that religious literalism and fundamentalism cause little more than strife and division, and that religious legalism can easily become fanaticism. But if Icke actually did his homework and investigated the mystical and esoteric teachings contained in some of the religions he dismisses as hogwash, he would see that many people have worked much, much harder at understanding the nature of reality than he has, have even transcended the ego, illusion, the matrix, if you will, achieved gnosis, theosis, Union with the Infinite, enlightenment, etc, and have left us practical methods for doing the same. These methods are to be found in the many paths of Yoga, Christian Mysticism, Buddhism, Sufism, and others.

I loved how the book stretched my mind. I loved how it analysed the global deception reality in a metaphysical, holistic, time-and-space-transcending manner. But by dismissing all religions and new age movements with a single stroke of his pen, he is, in my opinion, dismissing some of very means of achieving what he claims is the solution to all of this : Infinite Love.

With respect to David Icke and his courage for coming forth with his thoughts and research, he leaves us with no practical instructions for waking up to the greater consciousness of which he speaks. For that, I believe we should turn to the mystics, within and without religious traditions, to find the way.

5 out of 5 stars David Icke is a Mastermind.......2007-02-04

David Icke is producing mind-blowing work. Simply put, Mr. Icke is one of the most important voices on the planet today. Carefully researched and brilliantly written, his insight into political, social, and economic problems will wake you up from the dreamworld you once thought was real.

All of David's books are phenomenal, but this is my favorite. If you are ready to start your journey of higher consciousness, "Infinite Love..." is a wonderful place to start. Wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Good when it stayed on the subject of the title.......2007-02-03

I enjoyed the insights of Mr. Icke's on the truth of infinite love as the true nature of reality, and how we are being controlled by others to prevent us from seeing this. However, I always find the "reptilain illuminate" thing very naive. Similar to other belief systems, I see it as trying to find someone to blame. But there is no more evidence to reptilains then to jesus being the only begotton son of God. That being said, I do think there is much truth in it fundamentally.

Many of us like the idea of tofu better than the reality, and few of us know how to cook with it. Chef Deborah Madison's This Can't Be Tofu addresses such qualms, offering 75 recipes for this healthful (high in protein and low in salt, fat, and calories) food. Madison knows that tofu can be delicious, and provides recipes for a wide range of dishes that glorify its fresh milky taste and yielding texture--or that use it to make other foods (like mayonnaise) better for us. Beginning with an introduction to tofu varieties, Madison then discusses tofu purchasing and basic preparation techniques such as draining and pressing, which make tofu a useful flavor medium. Quick and easy tofu recipes like Seared Tofu with Chives and Peppers follow, along with formulas for tofu-based appetizers, salads, soups, stir-fries, curries, and pasta, among other fare. Particularly winning recipes include Spring Rolls with Shredded Cabbage, Mushrooms, and Tofu; Red Pepper and Miso Soup with Tofu and Black Sesame; and Sautéed Asparagus with Curried Tofu and Tomatoes. Madison also provides breakfast recipes like Scrambled Tofu with Herbs and Cheese (and ones in which tofu takes the place--without imitation--of sausages), plus a group of tofu sweets, including shakes and smoothies. A short section on accompaniments, such as Sweet Potatoes Baked with Oranges, concludes this comprehensive introduction to an ancient food that Madison makes modern and newly delicious. --Arthur Boehm

    Book Description

One taste and you'll say, "This can't be tofu!" But it is....

Nutritionists, doctors, and food authorities everywhere are telling us to eat more tofu. It's an excellent source of high-quality protein and calcium. It contains no cholesterol and is very low in calories and saturated fat. So why don't we eat more tofu? Because for too long tofu has been used as a substitute for other ingredients. Why turn tofu into a beef substitute in a burger, or pass it off as "cheese" in lasagna, when it is delicious on its own?

Now, in This Can't Be Tofu!, award-winning and bestselling author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone Deborah Madison shows how to make tofu taste great and be the star attraction in 75 stir-fries, sautés, and other dishes. Pan-Seared Tofu with Garlic, Ginger, and Chives, Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Curried Tofu Triangles with Peas, and Pineapple and Tofu Fried Rice are just some of the innovative recipes in this inspired collection.

3 out of 5 stars What does it look like?.......2006-12-05

I purchased this book as a gift for a friend that recently decided to become vegetarian. I am unfamiliar with tofu and tofu cooking, as is she, so I thought it might be helpful to have a cookbook with tasty meatless recipes. Mind you, I haven't tried any of the recipes in this book, they may be delicious, but what I found disapointing is THERE ARE NO PICTURES (except for the three on the cover.) I hope the recipes in this book taste more appealing than the book is to look at.

5 out of 5 stars Such Tasty Dishes!.......2006-11-18

Love the variety if offers, from breakfasts to desserts. Each time I sit down to plan my meals for the week, this one is right by my side. Anyone accustomed to flavorful meats seeking alternatives will love this book. Also the perfect size; not cumbersome to have in the kitchen.

5 out of 5 stars Great recipes - good enough to forgive the title.......2006-06-07

I was bothered by the title of this book, which implied strongly that tofu is a thing that must be disguised or improved, requiring the proverbial "spoonful of sugar" to be palatable. I bought it anyway because flipping though the recipes looked very interesting, and I reasoned that if the author really felt that way about tofu, she probably wouldn't be writing a tofu cookbook... right?

I've had the cookbook for a few months and probably made about a dozen different recipes so far. Every one has been a hit with me and with my family. Two of the soups have have already become family standards. My favorite is one with Thai red curry, coconut milk and butternut squash. I'm a big fan of Thai food and could make this soup every week if I weren't committed to variety.

I haven't tried any of the sauces, but not a single recipe I've tried has been a dud.

5 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this book.......2006-06-02

I have had this book for a couple of years and I cook from it frequently. It is true that many of the recipes call for frying, but the tofu is usually pan-fried in a very small quantity of oil. There are many Asian-inspired recipes, which doesn't bother me, because I find them all to be delicious. The recipe for Asian stock is great and it lends a lot of flavor to the dishes that use it. The szechuan tofu and green beans (which uses the mushroom soy sauce that one reviewer mentioned) is worth the small investment in a bottle of such an odd ingredient and the recipe is so good that I have gone through a big bottle of mushroom soy sauce using it only to make that one dish! And while it is true that some of the recipes are not vegetarian or vegan, I just want to add that I have been a vegetarian for a long time and I own dozens of vegetarian cookbooks, and for some reason the best ones are written by people who are not vegetarian!

5 out of 5 stars Great Tofu Cookbook.......2006-03-14

I bought this cookbook after checking it out from the library two times in a row. It was so good, I wanted one! In fact, it was so good I bought two, one for me and one for my best friend.

Most of the recipes are vegetarian, and can be adapted to vegan if needed. The entire book is worth the price for the soy chorizo recipe. It is excellent.
