Book Description

Mending the Ties That Bind

Divorce; disputes over inheritances, family business, or elder care. Rifts over marriage partners, career choices, or sexual orientation--these are just some of the many ways that even close families can break apart. Yet this all-too-common and often devastating family problem, and its emotional fallout, has gone virtually unaddressed…until now.

In this remarkable book, Barbara LeBey, an Atlanta attorney and former judge, who herself suffered and resolved a family estrangement, shares the stories of people from every walk of life and of every age and race, to show how such rifts often begin and how they can usually be resolved.

Working closely with two family therapists, LeBey offers a set of tested guidelines to help you approach alienated or angry family members, deal with your own issues, and mend your broken family relationships--even if you think it may already be too late.
Compassionate, practical, and full of rich insight, this book is a beacon of hope and healing to which families everywhere will turn again and again.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Necessary Book.......2006-07-11

I have read almost every book on this subject of family estrangements, and this is the first one that gave me the necessary tools to mend my estrangement with my brother. Instead of beating him over the head with the reason for our three year disconnect, I bought tickets to a kids' play and met him there with his kids and my kids. The children were so happy to be together that my brother forgot to be angry with me for not backing him one hundred percent during his divorce. This book was the magic I needed. It straight out said "don't rehash" and find something you and your estranged relative can do together besides talk. Brilliant!

5 out of 5 stars Great Suggestions.......2005-07-30

I used the author's suggestions to mend an estrangement that I have had with my sister. We hadn't spoken for nearly five years. I arranged to see her at a family event, never raised the issue of dissent, smiled, told her how much I missed her and asked her to forgive me for being unkind. I never really knew what it was that triggered the estrangement, but decided an apology must me in order. She tried to ignore me, but I then asked her to go to a play with me. I said we would just sit next to each other for a few hours and see what came next. To my surprise she accepted. We are now on speaking terms, and hopefully will be seeing each other more in the future. This wonderful book, Family Estrangements, taught me how to break the ice. What a good book! I highly recommend it. The author's stories are all told from the perspective of the one who wanted to mend the estrangement, hence they may appear one-sided, but that was obviously not the author's intention. The people who mended their estrangements did so with a myriad of good techniques. Use them and get back your loved one.

5 out of 5 stars What a Godsend!.......2005-06-17

I have had an estrangement from my son for the last few years. I have shed many tears missing him. His wife refused to allow him to see any of the members of his family. No matter how many times I tried to re-connect, I was rebuffed. I was hurt and angry, even to the extent of calling him a wimp. Once I read this book, I realized that I was doing everything the wrong way. I tried several of the author's suggestions. Happily, I am now in touch with my son. We speak on the telephone and we e-mail. Hopefully, we will be together soon. This book was a Godsend.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Self-Help Book.......2005-06-10

Though I am not usually a fan of self-help books, this one is chock full of great tips for opening a closed door. Though the subject is heartfelt and serious, the author has added just the right amount of humor particularly in her titles and sub-titles to make the book a pleasure to read. For anyone who needs to learn how to find the way home, read this book cover to cover. There's so much good stuff in every chapter regardless of the reason for your estrangement.

1 out of 5 stars How To Please Mommy or Mommy in Law.......2004-11-16

This book is a waste of paper. The author has her own obvious agenda. After reading just pages of each chapter the author's propaganda and emotional warfare is evident throughout the book.

I bought this book to help with my own situation. As the future daughter-in-law I was most interested in Chapter 4, which is about in-law relationships. Ms. LeBey portrays young women who are assertive in their daily lives as "manipulative" of their future husbands. She accuses all daughters-in-law of attempting to cut off communicaton between adult sons and their families. She calls this "alienating wives and enabling husbands" Ultimately, she describes the daughter-in-law in a most unfavorable light, blaming the assertive woman for standing up for her rights to be treated well. Meanwhile, LeBey portrays the parents-in-law as mere victims of the horrible daugher-in-law and her efforts to thwart their involvement in their sons' life. --Get Real Lady!!!! In fact she doesn't touch on the emotional stuggles parents face when their sons marry. She doesn't look to see how mothers-in-law could welcome the new family member--instead she focuses on how the new daughter-in-law is set against the sons' family.

I think if the parents-in-law were as benign as LeBey asserts then their would be no problems when families blend. I do not recommend this book. It is clearly written and meant for one side only. It focuses on using over-emotional language to elicit blame to certain parties within the family relationship. This book is clearly LeBey's attempt to cope with her own family estrangement. She absolves the parents of any responsibilty within the changing family unit for setting appropriate boundries and expectations.

My advice instead of wasting 3 dollars like I did is to go to a therapist and see how you can cope with the family rift yourself. The therapist will be able to see your situation from the perspective that you are coming from, whereas this book is written for mothers and fathers of adult children who still want to manipulate their children.
