Book Description

Based on the breakthrough understanding that virtually all headaches are forms of migraine--because migraine is not a specific type of headache, but the built-in mechanism that causes headaches of all kinds, along with neck stiffness, sinus congestion, dizziness, and other problems--Dr. Buchholz's Heal Your Headache puts headache sufferers back in control of their lives with a simple, transforming program: Step 1: Avoid the "Quick Fix." Too often painkillers only make matters worse because of the crippling complication known as rebound. Step 2: Reduce Your Triggers. The crux of the program: a migraine diet that eliminates the foods that push headache sufferers over the top. Step 3: Raise Your Threshold. When diet and other lifestyle changes aren't enough, preventive medication can help stay the course.

That's it: in three steps turn your headache problems around.

5 out of 5 stars Helped give me hope.......2007-06-13

I can only say good things about this book. It is written clearly and easy to follow, but packed with information. Reading the case histories was like hearing my own story. Since March 14, 2007 I have been on the diet and off of caffeine for the first time in 40 years. I no longer use Excedrin Migraine which I always previously carried or any other pain relief except for Tylenol and plain aspirin. I have had headaches since I was nine years old and I am now 58. During the past year the severity and frequency of headaches increased such that I thought I was going to be chronically ill and bedridden much of the time. I have not had a very severe headache since two weeks after completely getting off caffeine. I do still have mild headaches about 15 days out of 30 that I treat with tylenol and plain aspirin. About every two weeks I have a headache where I need to also rest for a few hours. I can't believe I can count on my body again. Plus, I still have the option of more improvement if I go to step 3 which is the preventive daily medication. Thank you Dr. Buchholz very much. I was sad about being sick and in pain so much and I feel so much better now.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2007-06-11

Dr. David Buchholz' book "Heal Your Headache" is an excellent book.
1. it is set up like a 1-2-3 manuel
2. you just follow his advice and start at step 1
3. it's completely safe
4. his language is straight forward and written with humour

After experiencing migraines for the last 30 years I finally have confidence that this book is going to work for me and for others. Stick to avoid the food triggers and you make progress. His formula about the layering of triggers is an eye opener.Recommended!!

5 out of 5 stars Get rid of your migraines.......2007-06-07

Before I got this book, I was averaging a migraine practically every day. Dr. Buchholz's book has reatly reduced the frequency and the severity of my headaches by following the right diet with no prescription medication required. One of the things that I really enjoyed about reading the book is how well it describes the feelings of someone who suffers from migraines. It seemed like he was describing me to me, so that made it much easier to follow the recommendations. The book and the treatment gave me the confidence not to be intimidated by my headaches any more. On a final note, if you don't feel an improvement in the first month, be persistent, and the results will come. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars The Solution.......2007-06-06

This book's advice worked for me. After years of headaches and migraines, I am almost completely free of them, except when I eat something that sets me off. Even then, I don't pay nearly as much as when I was abusing Excedrin and triptans. The best part of the book--eliminating rebound inducing drugs--is right on, and just doing that has made a huge difference in my life. The diet is harder, but through trial and error, most people should be able to eliminate most of their triggers. And, I found that the drugs I was taking made me more sensitive to foods, so getting off the meds made me less likely to react badly to what I thought were foods that made me get a headache in the first place. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars If you suffer from chronic headaches, read this book!.......2007-05-19

I heard the author, a respected Johns Hopkins neurologist, interviewed on National Public Radio, made a note that I should read his book, and after two more bouts with killer three to five-day headaches, ordered it. His prescription isn't easy to follow--what you eat contains substances that trigger your headaches and you may have to cut some common foods from your diet--but his description of why the common medical wisdom about migraines, sinus and allergy and other chronic headaches is wrong makes a tremendous amount of sense. I am following his advice, and so far, no headaches. If you suffer from debilitating chronic headaches, you must read this book.

    Book Description

Population surveys tell us that the headache is the most common indisposition of humankind. While most adults are able to take the problem instride, recurring headache or migraine in childhood can carry more serious implications. Despite this, there has been no major study of the subject for over twenty years. Professor Barlow’s book admirably fills this gap. The book starts with a section on classification and epidemiology, then deals withgenetics, pathogenesis, and precipitation factors of attacks. There is a thorough chapter on the expression of childhood migraine, and the periodic syndrome is fully defined and discussed. Another major section deals with complex and complicated syndromes and other serious problems such as seizure, stroke and syncope. There is a useful chapter on the treatment of juvenile migraine, and the final two chapters deal with the causes, evaluation, and investigation of symptomatic headache. Dr Barlow illustrates his text with over fifty detailed case histories of his own patients, spanning over twenty years of practice.

    Book Description

Twenty-eight million people in the United States suffer from chronic, recurrent, often disabling headaches-half of them forgoing medical attention in favor of analgesics that do nothing to prevent the next one. In Breaking the Headache Cycle, the authors-migraine sufferers themselves-present the integrated Headache Reduction Program (HARP) they developed at the Princeton Headache Clinic. Based on the central insights that the predisposition to headaches is a sign of an unusually sensitive nervous system and that drugs are only one component of the most successful treatment plans, this remarkable program instructs readers in a range of techniques, including - how to relieve the pain of migraines - how to detect and ward off oncoming headaches - how to prevent migraines from even threatening The innovative solutions detailed in Breaking the Headache Cycle range from simple breathing exercises and dietary changes to support groups and the latest medications. In this thorough and accessible guide, the authors promise new relief for those already being treated for recurring headaches and for those who currently suffer in silence.

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!.......2007-05-17

Since I have suffered from headaches all my life, I have eagerly read any book I can get my hands on that may lead to some relief. This is the first book that I can truly say has SOLVED my problem! For many years, I have had almost-daily headaches and even as recent as Feb 2007, I had 2 to 3 headaches a day (a total of 46 headaches that month alone)! I took Zomig to get relief. It's effective and very expensive but I also knew I was taking WAY too much medicine. This book is full of great information about the hows and whys of migraine headaches and also many, many suggestions of options to break the pattern and get relief. It's very practical, easy to read with stories of other peoples headache histories. As I read it, it seemed they were writing about ME and my headache history. Two very powerful suggestions from that book that changed my life: the deep breathing exercises when I am feeling stress and a low dose of amitriptyline, as prescribed by my doctor. Because of this book, I can truly say - I NO LONGER GET HEADACHES!
If you have recurring headaches - you MUST read this book!

4 out of 5 stars one of the better headache books.......2007-05-07

second most effective book. the information in the book is right on. The best book is "Heal Your Headaches".

5 out of 5 stars Breaking the Headache Cycle: A Proven Program for Treating and Preventing Recurring Headaches.......2007-03-13

I've had migraines for 20 years. I've been to several doctors and 2 headache clinics. I learned more from this book than anywhere! Very informative.

After reading case histories, it was nice to know that I wasn't the only one feeling this way. I found a lot of myself in this book.

Excellent book! I've already recommended it to a few friends with migraines.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resouce.......2005-09-22

I liked this book because it actually gave you specific steps to take to decrease and avoid getting migraine headaches.
It was written by someone who has dealt with migraine headaches. I would love to go to the clinic that they offer.

5 out of 5 stars Migraneurs, do yourself a huge favor and read this book!.......2005-02-02

This book ("Breaking The Headache Cycle") is superbly-edited, very well-written, and immensely helpful to anyone looking for relief from migraine. I've read about ten or so books on this subject; this is by far the best one. Another book ("The 1-2-3 Program" by Dr. Bucholz, I believe) is pretty good, but it's a distant-second when compared to this book by Dr. Livingstone and Ms. Novak. So, fellow-migraneurs, do yourselves a huge favor and get hold of this book! The authors are migraneurs themselves, thus making them uniquely-qualified to provide the insider's guide on this subject; and they give you information and help you can trust.

5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information, Written by One Who Knows Our Pain.......2007-04-23

Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches is a wonderfully comprehensive resource for those who suffer from Migraine and Headache, and for their family and friends. As a Migraineur of 41 years, I thought I had a fairly good grasp of the multiple and sometimes baffling aspects of Migraine. But Teri Roberts' book taught me a great deal more about the medical, personal and social issues surrounding this disease. A Migraineur herself, she has not only fought lengthy battles with Migraine but has also put the experience and wisdom gained from those battles to excellent use by generously providing us with this resource.

Far more than a source of technical information (and it does not short the reader in that regard, either), Living Well With Migraine offers constant encouragement and practical strategies for coping with the oft-uninformed medical community; with the fallout surrounding employment, family and friends that sometimes occurs when a debilitating illness strikes; and most important, with our own emotions of fear, discouragement, and depression.

Above all, Living Well With Migraine offers real hope, and there is no better anodyne than that.

    5 out of 5 stars Continuing Education.......2007-01-20

As a migraineur, I was not aware that migraine headaches are so varied and have now been given names. This information has alleviated my stress and described my types of migraines so accurately that I no longer fear I have meningitis or a brain tumor. Also, I have delayed applying for a disability for over a year because my symptoms do not match the designation criteria as per the US Social Security office. I now see however, that it is possible to apply, with medical verification, and obtain monetary relief for my suffering.

4 out of 5 stars Great resource for Migraine sufferers.......2006-11-15

This book answers many of the questions I had when trying to help my young son cope with his migraines. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information.......2006-11-11

If you are a Migrainuer or part of a support system of a Migrainuer (family members, friends, or even part of the medical team) you will find the information in this book very helpful. Being a Migraine Disease patient, I found this a wealth of information. I was able to use information found within to discuss different meds with my GP as optional treatment with preventatives, abortive, and rescue pain meds.

I would suggest this book to everyone, Migrainuer, family members, friends, or even part of the medical team that would like more info or just to be able to understand just a little of what this nuerological disease can do to someone and their life.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2006-09-22

Finally a book that really explains things without talking above our heads or oversimplifying.

5 out of 5 stars Magnesium works on headaches!.......2007-05-17

This is a simple to read book with such a simple solution to migraine headaches. My headaches have almost disappeared. Literally I was getting headaches daily. I am delighted that I read this book...I have shared it with many friends and at my next annual with OB-GYN, this will be a big topic with me.

5 out of 5 stars The Magnesium Solution For Migraine Headaches.......2007-03-26

Easy to read and easy to understand. I have already followed the directions and have stopped having migraines. I have been battling them for 20 years. The book should be a must read for anyone with migraine headaches. Magnesium is a lot cheaper than most medicines and all doctors.

    4 out of 5 stars Migraines.......2005-10-12

This book is short and to the point; very informative and makes sense. It seems apparent the author is well versed in the subject of migraines from a personal as well as a professional point of view. Recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Magnesium can relieve migraines and many other ailments, please read below.......2005-07-18

Dr. Cohen's book does the public a great service in discussing the importance of magnesium for relieving migraines. However, as Dr. Carolyn Dean discusses in her very important book The Miracle of Magnesium, magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the major factor -- in many other severe illnesses including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, diabetes, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problems. Unfortunately, the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium to some degree and many are severely deficient. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked by orthodox medical doctors, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation. While I recommend Dr. Cohen's book, I recommend even more highly Dr. Dean's more comprehensive (but easy to read) book The Miracle of Magnesium. Getting the right level of magnesium can not only mitigate a large number of seemingly-unrelated ailments, it may save your life.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Guide to an Overlooked Cause of Migraine.......2004-10-13

Migraine sufferers have to put up not only with the pain of their headache, but also with the inability of conventional medicine to do much about it. Drugs are potent, only work patchily and have nasty side effects.

This useful little book looks at one probable underlying migraine cause -- magnesium deficiency. Dr Cohen describes how up to 75% of Americans are deficient in this mineral and as a consequence are sick in many ways. Doctors are widely ignorant about magnesium and, in the pharma-culture that predominates, think of drugs as first resort rather than last.

Dr Cohen reviews many of the lifestyle factors that seem to provoke migraines, many of which deplete the body's magnesium stores.

Prudently, he does not claim that correcting the magnesium deficiency will cure all migraine headaches. However, he provides impressive evidence (evidence that your doctor will respect) that a high percentage of patients will get relief.
This eminently readable book has guidance on the types of magnesium available and how to find the right dose for you.

Of course, from the anthropological point of view, humans were not designed to have migraines or take supplements. As a nutritional anthropologist, I would prefer people to restructure their lives, notably eating habits, so that migraines disappear. Having said that, for those migraine sufferers who cannot manage the complete program, the insights in this book could transform their lives.

    5 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed it!.......2005-11-15

I found the different cases that Dr. Johnson discussed to be very enlightening, especially the cases on fibromyalgia. My Mom has suffered with this terrible disease for years. I thought that he really hit the nail on the head when he decribes the fibromyalgia patient in Chapter 8. I only wish I could get my Mom to see Dr. Johnson. She lives in L.A. and Dr. Johnson's office is in WI.

    5 out of 5 stars My Experience..........................2005-08-31

I heard this author on the radio, so I ordered his book because I have suffered with fibromyalgia for the past 6 years. I thought the book gave some good information, so I called Dr. Johnson's office and asked if they could refer me to someone in Boston who could help me. The receptionist told me that someone would get back to me by the end of the day. Later on that afternoon, I received a call from the author himself. He told me that he had a good friend that practices in Boston and that he would help me get in to see him as soon as possible. I have an appointment set up for next week and I am looking forward to feeling better.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book with Good Info.......2005-07-19

A patient of mine gave me a copy of this book and asked for my opinion. He has been suffering from dizziness for the past seven years. I am a family physician and have referred this patient to numerous specialists over the years. I have never heard of a "chiropractic neurologist", but I found this book to be very informative. In the first two chapters the author explains his path to health after he had suffered from migraine headaches for many years. I enjoyed the case histories in many of the chapters and found some of the treatments interesting. I say "interesting" because I may not agree with all of them. I placed a call to the author to ask specific questions concerning my patient and I was impressed with his grasp of what could be causing the vertigo. I recommended my patient to this author and I will recommend his book to you.

5 out of 5 stars Help for the Hopeless.......2005-04-12

I suffered with fibomyalgia for 18 years before my family physician (yes, you heard it right, as in M.D) handed me a copy of this book. I read it in one day which is probably the fastest that I have ever read a book in my life. I finished it on a Sunday and on Monday I called Dr. Johnson's office to schedule an appointment. I became a patient even though it was a one hour drive one-way to his offfice. That was 6 months ago and I can honestly say that this is the best I have felt in the last 13 years. I have more energy, I am sleeping better than I have in my life, and best of all, I am free of pain. Sure I get minor aches and pains like everyone else if I over do it, but I finally feel "normal" again for the first time in years.
This book is right on the money and if you suffer, then you have to read it!

    5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!!!.......2005-04-12

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gave me hope that I can get better. I hope that I can find a Chiropractic Neurologist in my area that cares about his patients as much as Dr. Johnson. I did not understand why I was suffering from constant pain and light-headedness until I read this book. I really identified with a number of the case histories that were presented in the chapters on migraines and dizziness. Although there were some big words used, the author explained them as he went along. If you suffer from chronic pain or dizziness, I highly recommend "What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work?"

Food can't cure headaches, but avoiding certain foods may prevent them, according to author David R. Marks, medical director of the New England Center for Headache. Some foods commonly trigger headaches in some people. If you're a headache sufferer, eliminating those foods from your diet is a sensible second step towards managing headaches. (The first step is to see your doctor to determine if there is some underlying condition that is causing the headaches.)

The key is to go on an elimination diet that avoids trigger foods such as most cheeses, chocolate, nuts, certain meats, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, MSG, caffeine, beans, out-of-the-oven yeast products (e.g., pizza, yeast breads, doughnuts), alcohol (especially red wine), ice cream, olive oil, and many, many more. If you were left to your own devices to figure out what's left after eliminating all these foods, you'd probably give up within a day. But Laura Marks has done the work for you, putting together 100 recipes that contain none (whew!) of the forbidden foods. The Headache Prevention Cookbook's recipes aren't bland or boring. They include Hearty Potato-Mushroom Frittata, Crepes with Spinach and Cheese Filling, Eggplant "Caviar," Corn and Carrot Chowder, Linguine with White Clam Sauce, Garlic Chicken, Cornish Hens and Wild Rice with Apricot Sauce, Asian Ginger Beef with Broccoli, Seafood Curry, and Angel Food-Strawberry Delight.

The authors suggest that you follow this diet, using their recipes and others you create yourself, for at least two months, and see if your headaches go away. Then gradually reintroduce the foods you avoided, one per week, so you can track which foods are your personal headache triggers. Once you've figured that out, avoiding those foods permanently can be your ticket to a headache-free future. --Joan Price

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-29

My husband is trying to eliminate tyramines and other migraine triggers. I was hoping to find a cookbook that would help us create meals that tasted good, were healthy and safe.

This cookbook misses the mark on several fronts. The worst thing is that it takes a very conservative approach to what is safe to eat. Most recipes included items that we had concluded were not safe or were borderline (determined from researching several different reliable sources). In the initial stages of testing out whether or not tyramines are triggers it is especially important to have an inclusive list and not make exceptions.

The second factor were the recipes themselves. There was very little here that would allow you to make an actual meal and no guidelines on how you would do that.

Third, as another poster pointed out, the recipes are not generally healthy, high in fats and low in vegetables and fruits. This could be compensated for if the rest of the meal were healthy, but without any guidelines it would be difficult to do.

I am hoping to find another cookbook but in the meantime I have been adapting recipes with quite a bit of success. Maybe I'll write a cookbook when I'm done!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for headache sufferers.......2005-03-17

I had headaches almost daily for about 30 years and FINALLY did something about it. Between this book and the "1-2-3 Program" book, I've eliminated about 98% of my headaches - headaches I thought were incurable.

With almost any headache prevention book, you will be told to go on an elimination diet to rid yourself of foods that can trigger headaches. This book has many recipes for folks like us (you're reading this because you have headaches, right?)

For a life with significantly reduced pain, the price of this book is negligible. Buy it, you won't regret it.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed with the content.......2004-12-09

There are some really good recipes in the book but I was disappointed that so many recipes contain foods believed to be migraine triggers in them. If you are trying to restrict your diet completely from migraine triggers, most of the recipes will not meet your needs without many modifications.

    1 out of 5 stars Unhealthy Recipes.......2004-08-20

I'm betting that the recipes in this book are tasty. They are full of fat, salt, and sugar. I had expected more from a couple of physicians. Part of getting rid of my headaches has been learning about proper nutrition. I've been learning to cook healthy foods. This book was a major step backwards for me, so I returned my copy. I would suggest finding Dr. Mark's list of foods to avoid, which can be found online, and just avoid those foods. Personally, I've avoided those foods, but significantly reducing my daily sodium intake was much more effective in reducing my daily headaches. Joel Fuhrman, M.D. says that sodium is very bad for headaches. He is the author of Eat To Live and is a board-certified family physician who specializes in preventing and reversing disease through nutritional and natural methods. Eat To Live is a must-have book about health and nutrition, in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Words that Heal.......2004-01-24

Heal Your Headache is a practical book with many insights about why people suffer from headaches. David Buchholz makes concepts easy to understand without pretending that he knows everything. This book really gives the reader the power to choose his or her destiny. Buchholtz sets the framework, backed up by medical wisdom and real life stories, to help the reader find out the cause of his or her own headache troubles. The charts showing what can cause headaches are perfect for quick reference. The sample menus in the back make preparing meals easier. I recommend this book to anyone who is a headache sufferer of any kind. Why go through needless tests when the power is in your hands?

5 out of 5 stars all about lifestyle changes.......2005-06-11

If you are looking to cure your migraines, you may want to check this book out. Since my sister has been getting migraines for the last 16 or so years, I have been telling her some of these things to get rid of them. Now that I suffer them as often as she does, I can't say that I have practiced what I preached, but I do believe that Zuzana Bic has the right idea of prevention through changes to your lifestyle. Basically, eat better, reduce stress, and get regular exercise. But she goes into detail to help the reader understand the physiology of the migraine disease and how changing your lifestyle will effect your migraines. If someone just told me that I needed to change these things, I would want to know how this would work. This book tells you. I do plan to follow her advise, and I like that it is not an elimination diet.

5 out of 5 stars Migraines for 30 years, until reading this book!.......2004-03-28

This book is amazing! I had migraines for 30 years until reading this book. Over the years I tried every drug on the market, ending with Imitrex then Amerge. Even with Amerge I started half of all my days with a migraine. Now I have control over them and I no longer have them. Don't think that because you already eat well and are not overweight that the book won't help. I ate a good diet and wasn't overweight... I still had migraines and the book explained why. The Publishers Weekly review statement that "Their program, however, may seem too simplified and too general for longtime headache sufferers" is way off base! It's exactly what long term headache suffers need!

5 out of 5 stars It really works.......1999-09-26

This is a very comprehensive book on headache prevention that ties togheter all the different lifestyle factors like food/nutrition, physical activity, and stress. And what is even better as that every tip and every strategy given by the authors to achieve a gradual lifesytyle modification actually works in practice.

5 out of 5 stars My doctor was wrong!.......1999-09-25

My doctor always told me that nutrition had nothing to do with headaches. Was he wrong! I modified my diet as recommended in the book - less fat, less sugar, more complex carbos, etc. Two weeks later my headaches were gone; After all these years of suffering needlessly. I just could not believe the improvement. I am free ...

      5 out of 5 stars EXTREMELY HELPFUL!.......1999-09-25

I recommended this book to a friend who used to get headaches daily. Now he just continues sending me "thank you" messages -- it must be a very useful book!!
