5 out of 5 stars If you buy one baby name book............2007-06-06

This should be it! The ultimate baby name book. I flipped through lots of name books that were merely dictionaries of baby name books. I read this one so much I cracked the spine!

This book gives you an opinion on the name, ranking, and ten other sibling names that "match"! I have met several people that have children with the sibling suggestions (including myself)! It is amazing! I love it and look at it still even though I'm not pregnant any more!

5 out of 5 stars very helpful! different than other baby books.......2007-06-04

This book was super-helpful to us in picking a boy's name. We just could not think of many, and the lists and descriptions are clever and spot-on. I had a lot of fun reading through this book. It made choosing a name an enjoyable process. Much more insightful and modern than other baby books that just list names. Good mix of traditional and modern names.

4 out of 5 stars The Best Baby Name Book Out There.......2007-04-10

This is the best name baby book I've ever seen, but, with that said, I don't think any baby name book is really going to help you pick your baby's name. At the most it will help you to rationalize the names you already like.

What makes this book great is that it takes a look at names in a whole new way. Not just the derivations or meanings, but also what names "match" that name and what people associate with that name. It also groups similar names together so you can peruse a list of names that you might actually like rather than pour through hundreds of names that you won't like.

Laura Wattenberg is obsessed with names and naming trends over time. If you haven't taken a look at her blog then go check it out; the Baby Name Voyager is a must see!

4 out of 5 stars Different than other baby name books...Does not include any name meanings.......2007-04-06

I am having my third child, and am having a very difficult time picking out a name. Although this book was fun and interesting to read, I still am undecided! What I like most about this book is that the names are categorized into different styles like "New classics", "The -ens", Biblical", "Timeless" etc....although I have not decided on a name I do have a list of names that I am considering now. I took a look at what style categories my other two boys fall under, and am trying to pick a name that shares some of the same categories in hopes that it will sound good. I liked that this book was not like any other baby name book, but I did not like that it did NOT have name meanings. In addition to all of the other information the author has provided, a name meaning would really complete the book, and that is why I only give it 4 stars. If at some point this book includes name meanings I would give it a 5.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2007-03-29

After trying to decide which baby name book to get, I got this one because it had great reviews from other people. As soon as I got this book, my husband took it from me and read the whole thing. It was fun to look at it together and see which names we liked. Though we have some names set already it was fun to see what other names are out there that we haven't thought of. My only gripe with this book is that I wish there were more meanings of what the name stands for.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A lot of names to look through!.......2007-01-10

I thought the book was great and had lots of interesting name ideas. It organzied names alphabetically but also in like-sounding names, names that were pairs, famous people's names, etc. The only thing I did not like was that the pronounciations were not provided. Other than that I thought the book had great ideas, was very organized, and I plan on passing it on to my pregnant friends.

4 out of 5 stars Tons of names.......2007-01-10

As the title suggests, there are a ton of names in this book. I would have appreciated some more depth to at least a portion of the names. However, I really liked the sheer number of names. The names in this book went beyond the run-of-the-mill, most popular names. Some of the names are unrealistic and laughable. Overall, a good book to use as a starting point.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of names..........2007-01-03

Although this book does have the huge number of names that it promises, many of them are just numerous spellings of the same name. I also did notice that the book contains lots of exotic names, and not as much of a focus on traditional names. So if you're looking for a name specific to your heritage (like you're parents are from Vietnam and you want a Vietnamese name), this is a great book. But if you're looking for something a little more mainstream, you may want to go with something else. The one thing that really made me a little mad, though, was that they misspelled a country's name (just so happened to be the one that my baby's father is from, so I noticed). I don't have the book with me right now, but I think they put Tai rather than Thai (as in Thailand)!!! Get an EDITOR!!!

2 out of 5 stars Lots of false information.......2007-01-01

I think the author should have used more reliable sources, there are LOTS of mistakes in the meanings of names. Serves as good inspiration, but before settling for a name from this book one should check the REAL background of the name with a more reliable source.

2 out of 5 stars Too Many Names.......2006-12-28

This book didn't help us decide on a name. I became overwhelmed with the number of names, and actually bought a different book to assist us. Too many names, too many variations and spellings of the same name. It contains a lot of extremely common names.

5 out of 5 stars This book feels like an old friend........2007-05-17

The Baby Name Bible was easy to pick out of the many books of this genre since the cover is so engaging. Upon reading it, I was very relieved to find that, rather than having to plow through name after name in this very substatial volume, I felt as though I were being guided by an old friend who loves everything about naming a new baby and wants me to be just as delighted with the final choice. This is a great gift book!

2 out of 5 stars Destroyed what made "Beyond Jennifer" good.......2007-05-08

The phone book format destroyed what made "Beyond Jennifer ..." worth reading: the thematic contexts and lists of manageable size. Don't bother.

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner from the Baby Name Experts.......2007-02-28

With six children, Satran & Rosenkratz' book Beyond Jennifer & Jason, Madison & Montana: What To Name Your Baby Now has been my favorite resource for coming up with names for our children. Now that I'm pregnant with our seventh, I thought to come see if they had a newer version of this book available and found The Baby Name Bible! I ordered it immediately and wasn't disappointed.

In their above-mentioned book, the authors didn't deal with providing a dictionary of baby names -- in this book they do, along with meanings and origins of names. Their dictionary is comprehensive (but not OVERLY so, so that it's hard to wade through the names), it's fresh, it's interesting and it's funny. But also included in this book -- and what I liked about BJJMM -- are their category lists; lists that help provide the FEEL of the name (things like "If you like Adam, You Might Also Like ...," "Color Names," "Cool Bible Names" and "Star Baby Names."

This book gets a high recommendation from me.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not the best.......2007-06-27

This book did have some "interesting" ideas but it wasn't a very big book so your chances of finding a name that you really like are pretty slim. Especially since a lot of the ideas are totally weird names from video games, celebrity baby names, movies, and even a section with "Grandpa" names for little girls...what? Well, if you're looking for a really uncommon or unusual name, go for it, but I recommend also getting a name book with a lot more choices.

2 out of 5 stars Not cool at all.......2007-06-13

I was a little skeptical about finding a "cool" name in a book called "Cool Names", and I was right to be. I know cool is a matter of opinion, but most of the names in this book are simply ridiculous-- is anyone actually going to name their child Salmon or Experience? This slim book appears to be random lists of words that the authors have grouped into categories like "Spiritual Names" or "Artist Names". If you are looking for a unique name I suggest The Baby Name Wizard, which will tell you about the popularity of a name, if it rising or declining in popularity and identify any pop culture references you may overlook (for example, that you are naming your child after a fish!)

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE these books!.......2007-01-18

I adore the books these authors write; they are my soulmates! I have been interested in names ever since I was a child, and their books totally feed my craving. I love their insightful and intelligent advice, I love their humor, and I love lists! I love knowing WHY people (and celebrities) named their child what they did. Knowing trends is very important to me; I would never want my child to be one of 5 of the same name in her class as I was with "Susan". These books have their finger on the pulse, and also give lots of alternative suggestions to popular names. I love their "So Far Out They're In" type categories. This book is a total winner, and very entertaining, unlike those "encyclopedias" of name meanings. I always lend mine to prospective mothers, and keep an extra copy just for that purpose.

2 out of 5 stars Good for writers; not for parents-to-be.......2007-01-14

I'm a writer, so I'm always on the lookout for interesting names I might use for some characters. I have about three people named Scott, five James's (all men), and a good three or four girls with the name Elizabeth. So I picked this up, thinking it might help me. There are some good ideas for character names in here (Narcissa, Dashiell, and Isolde), but I don't think it's a good idea to just smush a name together for a real person (who in their right mind would name their kid Moon?). Plus, it also promotes giving kids crappy names. What really made the star-rating go down for me was their section on grandpa/granddaughter names. It's offensive that they say names like Marshall, Stanley, Wallace, Gary, Randolph, Theodore, and Sherman shouldn't be used on a boy. It's okay to name a girl Marshall, though! After all, a girl obviously is stronger with a male name! "Rolls eyes". Bull. Giving a girl a name like Wallace or Stanley is nothing short of cruel. These are boy names and should stay that way. The same goes for Elliot. And also, a lot of these names aren't new. The -aden trend is already dated; there are so many Brayden/Caden/Jaydens nowadays. I gave it two stars because I found some good ideas in here for CHARACTERS or PETS! But it's only two because it's also suggesting that it's okay to give your kid a crappy name (or should I say, krappeigh, since creative spelling is where it's at nowadays).

    2 out of 5 stars What-ever.......2007-01-06

This book doesn't have anything unheard of. It has some lame make you own name ideas. Like instead of Anthony it's Anfrony. Lame.

    Book Description

Hilarious, true, and inspirational, Hello, My Name is Mommy is for every pregnant woman and new mother who ever felt helpless and out of control instead of confident and aglow. Lynch taps into her own dysfunctional childhood and fears of becoming a mom to honestly talk real-girl to real-girl about what's really bothering many moms-to-be: -Does a woman's own screwed-up past doom her to repeat the cycle? -If a mommy was raised on raw hot dogs and second-hand smoke can she still be a good mommy? -Kids are kind of germy and gross, but thinking that doesn't make a person a bad mommy -Can a working mommy actually get back to it with Cheerios falling out of the old nursing bra? Dr. Spock may tell moms to trust their instincts, but a Misfit Mommy wants to do everything but. Mommies-to-be who feel like frauds and imposters won't feel alone anymore with this insightful and laugh-out-loud guide.

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Hello, my name is Braggart...........2007-02-21

Sheri Lynch's book is more a display of her achievements with a baby in tow rather than a humorous look at motherhood. I kept waiting for the funny, humorous one liners or stories to make me giggle, but instead found myself bored by Lynch's "look at me and what I have achieved" dribble.

    2 out of 5 stars Too dysfunctional.......2007-01-19

We're all a little dysfunctional and hope to not screw it up, but this book put so much emphasis on Mom's dysfunctionality that it became not relevant to us "normally screwed up" Moms. I was hoping for humor and good tips, this was not the book.

    5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Fit!.......2006-11-29

This is one of my favorite pregnancy/motherhood books! The first time I read it (yes, I've read it more than once in the past month) I laughed out loud the entire time. Sheri has a great ability to talk about serious matters in a lighthearted but helpful way. You won't find a four page list of essential layette items or a step by step guide to changing a diaper but this book has so much more to offer. It will help you discover some pretty profound things about yourself as a woman and a mom, especially if you feel that your own parents fell somewhat short in raising you. It will also help prepare you for the experience of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. I definitely recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a new mom!.......2006-11-10

Great book for during pregnancy or right after the birth of a baby. A funny look at motherhood!

    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read..........2006-06-07

for any expectant mother from a dysfunctional background, even if your father never held you at gunpoint, he just wasn't around, I think you can relate to the feelings Lynch describes and it's entertaining, hilarious at times!

    5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-08

My husband and I find this book very helpful. It is in alphabetical order so it makes looking up a name easy.It also includes everything mentioned like all of the meanings and where the names comes from. It is a great tool other than the internet. Even though we are still looking for a name I am sure we wont have a problem finding one in this book.

    Thanks loads.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, unique names.......2006-03-17

After searching three other baby name books (that each boasted 20,000 names or more - one even had more than 50,000 from around the world) and finding nothing that worked for our first child, I borrowed this book from a friend and found the perfect name. The name my husband and I chose wasn't in any of the other books. The same thing happened to the friend who lent me The Name Book - she has never found her first-born's name in another baby name book.

The meanings in The Name Book are lovely, and the spelling variations allow parents to personalize names to their own tastes. Even though we knew the sex of our baby before she was born, it was still nice to have the boy and girl (and unisex) names listed together - it just gives you more options and it's easier to read.

I'm ordering my own copy of the book since we're expecting our second child this year. (By the way, my lending friend is done having children - but she's keeping the book just because it's so wonderful!)

    5 out of 5 stars Name Book.......2005-09-18

This book is comprehensive in its information, but does not try to be the same as other books with information about proper names. I appreciate the genderless organization, just alphabetical listings, with alternate spellings and nick-names included. Each name has the origin, although I found a few of them to be different from the expected and usual. The meanings and scripture associated with the names are the driving reason for my purchase of this book. I plan to use it as a teaching tool with my students, encouraging them with the meaning and scriptures for their names.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2004-09-14

This is a great book that I have used over and over! Even after picking my baby's name; I still refer to it!! It has over 10,000 names with meanings and orgins PLUS a great spiritual and bible reference for each name!
It's a book that sits on my kitchen counter for easy access!!

4 out of 5 stars Helpful in the naming game.......2002-09-03

The best thing about this book was something that I saw in no other book. One of the ways we were looking at to name our child was to find words (or the meaning of the names for those we were naming for) and finding the hebrew word that meant that. This is the only book with a dictionary in the back of words (i.e., if you look up song, you will find Shira, if you look up Strong, you will find Ethan). So it was helpful when we were looking at naming in that way. There are so many names in here, it is great - not all of them are Jewish, per se, but all names seem to be in the book. It was extremely helpful in naming our child!

1 out of 5 stars dislikes of internet sells.......2001-03-29

I wanted to take a quick look over the internet but the people who programed this site will not let you scan the book for one second. It is sad that you would have to by the book just to look for one sorry thing. And I am ashamed at the situation. And at the creaters of this site for not giving anyone the chance to look before they buy.

      5 out of 5 stars A complete Jewish-American name book........1998-04-26

I found this book to be the best, most complete book of names for an English-speaking parent-to-be of Jewish heritage. Everything is included: English/Anglo-Saxon/American (even some Spanish and French), and of course, Yiddish, Biblical/Talmudic, and Israeli names.

2 out of 5 stars not a book for French beginners.......2005-09-28

I don't like this book, actually i am taking French in college now, this is the textbook for my elementary course. but i don't think it is a book for beginners, there are too much infor in one chapter. and it never makes it clear the grammar points/pronunciation, the CDs read very fast to catch up with.
