Book Description
What would you do to inherit a million dollars? Would you be willing to change your life? Jason Stevens is about to find out in Jim Stovall's The Ultimate Gift. Red Stevens has died, and the older members of his family receive their millions with greedy anticipation. But a different fate awaits young Jason, whom Stevens, his great-uncle, believes may be the last vestige of hope in the family. "Although to date your life seems to be a sorry excuse for anything I would call promising, there does seem to be a spark of something in you that I hope we can fan into a flame. For that reason, I am not making you an instant millionaire." What Stevens does give Jason leads to The Ultimate Gift. Young and old will take this timeless tale to heart.

Not only is this book inspirational and heart warming but also VERY pragmatic.....It creates a road map to newer, more powerful, success filled life...
Sincere Message...Flat Plotline.......2007-06-25
The intent of Jim Stovall, in writing this book, was to share the importance of life's major "gifts" in the form of a story. The author, Jim Stovall, has made many achievements himself; despite blindness, he has authored various books and is Co-founder and President of the Narrative Television Network (NTN).
The story is narrated by Mr. Hamilton, an 80 year-old attorney, who is reading the will of his departed friend/client, Red Stevens, to Red's family members. Red had chosen one of his family members, his nephew Jason, to receive a particularly special inheritance. Each month, Jason is supposed to come to Mr. Hamilton's office and watch a video that his uncle Red made. In this video, Red gives Jason an assignment that he hopes will help him understand the meaning of each "gift". If Jason is able to properly complete each assignment, he will receive 'the Ultimate Gift' in the end. The "gifts" are as follows: Work, Money, Friends, Learning, Problems, Family, Laughter, Dreams, Giving, Gratitude, a Day, Love, and (lastly) the Ultimate Gift. At the beginning, Jason is impatient and obnoxious (which is why Red singled him out for this plan), but he gradually works harder at accomplishing what he had been enlisted to do. Jason comes to better understand the meaning of life through the tasks that he is asked to perform, such as using $1,500 to help five different people, helping out at the 'Red Stevens Home for Boys' for a month, and finding one person who is having a hard time in life that maintains a sense of humor.
While this all may look good in summary, the major flaw of this book is that the characters are lacking in complexity. They appear to merely be placed there for the purpose of illustrating Stovall's "gifts", though the considerate nature of Mr. Hamilton is revealed in his willingness to help his friend/client Red Stevens carry out his final wishes in the elaborate plan made for Jason and the gradual transformation of Jason from an obnoxious brat to a fairly understanding human being are both indicators of real human sentiment. I may be missing the point here, since this book is more about comprehending life's "gifts" than anything else, but the characters in this book seem to be little more than bland archetypes.
So, what does this book offer that you can't get elsewhere? The concept of "The Ultimate Gift" may be appealing to some readers because Stovall decides to descriptively *show* (through a plot) and not merely *tell* what he is trying to convey. If this would've been written in the form of, say, a self-help book, with similar lessons, would it have attracted as much attention? Perhaps not, because then it wouldn't be much different from most of them!
Book review.......2007-06-09
Book content was average. A little predictable, a little boring. I thought it would be more inspiring, however, the message was sweet.
The Ultimate Gift.......2007-06-06
It wasn't my favorite book. I felt that it was unrealistic, even though it is only trying to make a point. It makes its point, which is really just common sense when you think of it--it wasn't anything that struck me as profound. It could be corny at times and it was extremely repetitive. It is easy reading, and is worth a look if you like these kinds of stories.
Great Book!.......2007-06-01
This book is great. It is easy reading and has great motivational ideas. It is a book that you can read over again. I also think it would be a great gift for anyone.

Book Description
As he is driving home from a minister's conference, Baptist minister Don Piper collides with a semi-truck that crosses into his lane. He is pronounced dead at the scene. For the next 90 minutes, Piper experiences heaven where he is greeted by those who had influenced him spiritually. He hears beautiful music and feels true peace. Back on earth, a passing minister who had also been at the conference is led to pray for Don even though he knows the man is dead. Piper miraculously comes back to life and the bliss of heaven is replaced by a long and painful recovery. For years Piper kept his heavenly experience to himself. Finally, however, friends and family convinced him to share his remarkable story.

90 minutes in Heaven.......2007-06-28
This is a very moving and inspirational book to read. Gives you a lot to think about and realize God is real and with us each and every day. Good read.
Simply Heavenly.......2007-06-27
90 Minutes in Heaven: A True Story of Death and Life is by far one of the most inspirational books, I have read in a very long time. Rev. Piper's ordeal after his car crash and the events that follow, keeps the reader engrossed in this book. One of the interesting parts is his reluctance to tell people about the experience, you have to read the book to find out why.
You get to take a view into his life from a short period before the car crash, and then on through, all that has come out of his experiences. I would highly recommend this book, to both believers and non-believers.

Don Piper's 90 Minutes in Heaven.......2007-06-27
I truly believe Don Piper's story about his accident and death and his 90 minutes in Heaven and his return to earth through the prayer of the pastor that prayed continually and sang hymns until Don started singing along with him. There were a great many prayers from fellow church member, family and friends. I bought several of these books and gave them to my children, my friend that just lost his wife and another friend that just lost her son. It brought great hope and peace to these friends.
90 MInutes in Heaven a Delight.......2007-06-19
This book was very helpful to me. I just had a dear friend die of pancreatic cancer and she was only 43. Even though my friend and I are Christians it was helpful to know what heaven is like and that death is only the beginning to a wonderful existence. This book has helped me get through the grieving process.
Miracles Still Happen.......2007-06-17
I am usually skeptical about near-death experiences, but Don Piper's story rings true. The straight-forward language, the constant glory of his recovery given to God, and the many instances of answered prayer in his story are very believable. His view of Heaven was comforting for those who have lost loved ones, but like Don I'm sure, I wish I could hear more!

Book Description
“There are places that I have never forgotten. A little cobbled street in a smoky mill town in the North of England has haunted me for the greater part of my life. It was inevitable that I should write about it and the people who lived on both sides of its ‘Invisible Wall.’ ”
The narrow street where Harry Bernstein grew up, in a small English mill town, was seemingly unremarkable. It was identical to countless other streets in countless other working-class neighborhoods of the early 1900s, except for the “invisible wall” that ran down its center, dividing Jewish families on one side from Christian families on the other. Only a few feet of cobblestones separated Jews from Gentiles, but socially, it they were miles apart.
On the eve of World War I, Harry’s family struggles to make ends meet. His father earns little money at the Jewish tailoring shop and brings home even less, preferring to spend his wages drinking and gambling. Harry’s mother, devoted to her children and fiercely resilient, survives on her dreams: new shoes that might secure Harry’s admission to a fancy school; that her daughter might marry the local rabbi; that the entire family might one day be whisked off to the paradise of America.
Then Harry’s older sister, Lily, does the unthinkable: She falls in love with Arthur, a Christian boy from across the street.
When Harry unwittingly discovers their secret affair, he must choose between the morals he’s been taught all his life, his loyalty to his selfless mother, and what he knows to be true in his own heart.
A wonderfully charming memoir written when the author was ninety-three, The Invisible Wall vibrantly brings to life an all-but-forgotten time and place. It is a moving tale of working-class life, and of the boundaries that can be overcome by love.
Customer Reviews:
Poignant and profound.......2007-06-26
An absolutely wonderful book written by a 93 year old author who captures the very essence of anti-semitism in pre-World War I England through his own childhood experiences. The last chapter is so descriptive and poignant...really tugs at the heartstrings. I hope Mr. Bernstein continues to share his gift of the written word.
Excellent book.......2007-05-28
Wonderfully written. This book surprised me because of its unpredictability. I couldn't put it down. Mr. Bernstein's story is beautiful, it's a wonder why he waited so long to share it.
A read to get you thinking.......2007-05-25
My six member book club read this last month, and all of us, including our most critical member, found this book very enjoyable and enlightening. The inclusion of dialog easily puts the reader in the time period. The tone and style of the author encourage empathy and understanding of both populations on either side of the invisible wall. The author conveys his and his sibling's emotions in the gentlest of ways while the reader easily grasps that at the time they were much more. While not quite a page turner, my attention never lagged and I would have willingly read more. I would have appreciated more wisdom on the overall subject such as was found in Arthur's letter to Lily.
Vivid Memoir.......2007-05-25
Harry Bernstein writes in a descriptive manner that makes all the characters seem to be living right in front of the reader's eyes. The story is so interesting that I could not put the book down until I finished. It was hard to believe that a man at ninety years of age could remember so much detail and emotion back to his early childhood. The book was well worth reading. I look forward to Mr. Bernstein's next book.
Simply Wonderful!.......2007-05-25
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was moved by the characters, who came brilliantly alive. It was fascinating, and heartbreaking and uplifting! It really gives you a glimpse of life as it was. It was almost impossible to put down. I rated this book 5 stars, but I would have rated it 105 stars if they would have let me.

Book Description
A bright, science minded boy goes to the beach equipped to collect and examine flotsam--anything floating that has been washed ashore. Bottles, lost toys, small objects of every description are among his usual finds. But there's no way he could have prepared for one particular discovery: a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera, with its own secrets to share... and to keep.
Customer Reviews:
An incredible concept and well done........2007-06-04
My 7 year old and I loved the book. The illustrations are wonderful and it really inspired thought. However, for the price it was over and done with a little quickly - we spent maybe a half hour on it.
Stokes the imagination.......2007-05-30
Flotsam is a wonderful book. The images are beautifully drawn but that is not the reason for
my excitement. This book allows children as well as adults to become storytellers. Best of all
the story can change with each reading. The three year old in our house has already changed the
his readings at least once if not twice. It holds his interest and mine too.
Flotsam.......2007-05-28
As An Elementary School Librarian, I was amazed with the pictures in this book. A story is told through a series of events with only pictures. The pictures are very detailed and wonderful, It really lets the reader use his or her imagination, and it is a great book to share with readers of all ages.
A Gem of a Book.......2007-05-18
This book is really a treasure. It will make you and your kids think about the ocean, the past, the future, photography, optics, conservation, and the list goes on! Believe it or not, it isn't really for the very young even though there are no words. The ideas the pictures are trying to convey are fairly complex. Even toddlers who can read would benefit from an adult explaining what is going on and how the story is progressing. Still, babies might enjoy just looking at some of the beautiful art. I think you will love "reading" it to your children.
Sharing Aquatic Memories.......2007-05-14
This beautifully illustrated picture book shares aquatic memories across generations of human beings and water creatures. The story opens and closes with a camera found on the shore. And I leave it to you and your favorite child to discover the tale within the pages. The aquatic snapshots are fanciful and entertaining. Great for a child with a vivid imagination.

Psychiatry and metaphysics blend together in this fascinating book based on a true case history. Dr. Weiss, who was once firmly entrenched in a clinical approach to psychiatry, finds himself reluctantly drawn into past-life therapy when a hypnotized client suddenly reveals details of her previous lives. During one hypnosis session his client introduces the spirit guides who have been her soul therapists in between lives. This is when the story really takes off for Weiss, who discovers that these guides have specific messages about his dead son as well as Weiss's mission in life. No, we cannot verify the truth of this story using the limited scientific tools we have available. However, it is hard to dispute that this well-respected graduate of Columbia University and Yale Medical School has discovered a personal truth that has led him to be an enormously popular speaker, author, and leader in the field of past-life therapy. --Gail Hudson
Book Description
As a traditional psychotherapist, Dr. Brian Weiss was astonished and skeptical when one of his patients began recalling past-life traumas that seemed to hold the key to her recurring nightmares and anxiety attacks. His skepticism was eroded, however, when she began to channel messages from the "space between lives," which contained remarkable revelations about Dr. Weiss' family and his dead son. Using past-life therapy, he was able to cure the patient and embark on a new, more meaningful phase of his own career.
Customer Reviews:
Next time I'm calling Dr. Weiss.......2007-06-27
Dr. Brian Weiss has done for the subject of past lives and reincarnation what Dr. John Mack did for the subject of alien abductions; namely, bring these taboo topics into the realm of legitimate scientific enquiry. To rational critics hostile to either man's work I can only offer a quotation attributed to Albert Einstein by way of rebuttal: "What we believe determines what we can learn." As to all those religious zealots who think the church should put Dr Weiss under house arrest along with Galileo for having the audacity to undermine their dogmatic indoctrinations with evidence to the contrary, I offer only the immortal words of Don Henley, who said: "Get Over It!"
For those skeptics who have long questioned the reliability of hypnosis as a tool for this type of enquiry, I would like to offer in evidence the fact that hypnosis is not the only means by which historically verifiable evidence of past lives has been uncovered; my own life being one case in point. While I have always kept an open mind with respect to the possibility of reincarnation, I had always remained decidedly reluctant to explore the matter, even after what happened to me in the spring of 1975.
My girlfriend, who would later become my third wife, was sitting in front of me reciting an 800 year old Greek Orthodox prayer that was reputed to dispel evil and quiet the mind when she was suddenly overcome by a spontaneous psychic vision of a very old, thin and tall monk dressed in red robes. As soon as she described him I was immediately struck by his similarity to what a previous psychic had referred to years earlier as my "very powerful spirit guide." Almost immediately she then reported that his features were morphing, first into a Prussian General, then into a Mongolian Warlord. Next she reported seeing an amorphous blob of grayish-white energy off to my left that she found to be inextricably terrifying.
Several months later she and I decided to take a weeklong seminar in psychic healing and during a class aura reading exercise, in which I was the subject, the entire class reported seeing everything she had seen months earlier, and in exactly the same order and detail. According to the instructor the man in red robes was indeed my spirit guide, the Prussian and Mongolian were personas from two of my past lives, and the blob of energy was a "familiar spirit," an artificial being created during one of my past lives of high psychic development.
This is the point in the story where I probably should have sought the help of someone like Dr. Weiss. Unfortunately, I decided to tough it out on my own. For the next 25 years I was continuously plagued by spontaneous encounters with "psychics" who seemed bent on answering all the questions I was too afraid to ask about the events of these two previous lives, many of them people just like my wife who had no inkling of special gifts prior to their encounter with me.
As the evidence continued to mount I eventually began to realize how the tragic events of these prior lifetimes had in fact shaped both the events and the relationships of my current life. Almost everyone in my current life it seemed, friends, lovers, wives, etc, had played some pivotal role in these former incarnations and had returned to "help" me resolve the issues, whether I wanted to or not.
Aside from the karmic issues that needed resolving there was also a lot of other knowledge to be gained along the way it seemed. Things like discovering my personal role in Genghis Khan's conquests and Germany's involvement in World War I, or how to communicate directly with my Guide, how to control my familiar, what my spiritual dharma was and how that related to my having been initiated into a spiritual brotherhood while still in my teens. I even learned how to defeat the inorganic inter-dimensional parasites that feed on the dark emotional energies we generate when we succumb to the negative thoughts they implant into our minds. Yep, spooky stuff to be sure.
Amazingly, after documenting all these events in my spiritual autobiography, "The Vortex: A True Story of Passion and Karma" I was even able to substantiate many of the events described through historical research. Still, in retrospect, if I had it all to do over again, I would call Dr. Weiss. Something tells me the whole thing could have been handled a lot faster and less painfully with his help.
Maxwell Austin van Lack, Author of The Vortex: A True Story of Passion and Karma
Many Lives, Many Masters.......2007-06-01
Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian L. Weiss, M.D.
The book was very involved and complex in the way of Catherine's thoughts and memories and several accounts of different past lives. Many of the discussion from the "masters" lead Dr. Weiss along a path of answers to his personal life, of which he thought he had no questions about.
The book was inspiring in the aspect of persuasion. It shows readers that with persistence and confidence, you may learn more about life or others than you may even bargain to learn.
It also leads the readers into feeling that perhaps taking advice may be for our own good, and that stubbornness helps no one.
I enjoyed the book. Many Lives, Many Masters was really well designed so that the reader can feel involved in the meetings between Catherine and Dr. Weiss. It is the type of book that readers have trouble putting the book down. The results of the book were as conclusive as they could be, but still left me wanting to further the research I have begun about the theories of past lives.
If you liked the topic of this book, you may also enjoy reading Old Souls, by Tom Shroder.

Why we should make love, not war........2007-05-14
It's unusual to read a book like this written by an accomplished psychiatrist/professional. But I personally had conversations with a psychiatrist friend who was talking generically about his patients in a mental hospital. It was striking to me then that he wouldn't allow his psychic patients to touch him in any way because they frequently were known to 'see' negative aspects of one's future.
Good story, fun reading and with a most important message.
Rah-Rah. Great message and the right one to live by.
Make love, not war.
Life-changing.......2007-05-12
This book is one of those novels that has an immeasurable impact on your life and changes your philosophy, values and priorities forever. I send it to all my friends who are at the point in their lives, at whatever age that occurs, when they are questioning existence and its purpose and what happens after!
Keep an open mind and read it.......2007-05-02
I'm not sure exactly how great an impact this book had on me but it had definitely changed certain aspects of my view of life. I particularly like the scientific approach Dr. Weiss took to analyze the unusual experience he had with one of his patients named Catherine. He scrutinized and evaluated every detail of her past-life memories and spiritual experiences with the mindset of a scientist and for me, as someone who has been trained throughout his whole life to think logically and to take everything with a grain of salt, this approach is much more appealing and convincing compared to those psychic experiences often reported on tv and magazines. I think the most important thing is to always keep an open mind and be willing to listen to differing accounts before you decide whether to believe them or not.
If you are suffering from health problems or the loss of someone important to you, this book is especially suitable for you to read because it may help you overcome the grief or anxiety and find an inner peace that you would have much needed. Hesitate no more, grab this book and be ready for a life-changing reading experience.

The Heart of Change is the follow-up to John Kotter's enormously popular book Leading Change, in which he outlines a framework for implementing change that sidesteps many of the pitfalls common to organizations looking to turn themselves around. The essence of Kotter's message is this: the reason so many change initiatives fail is that they rely too much on "data gathering, analysis, report writing, and presentations" instead of a more creative approach aimed at grabbing the "feelings that motivate useful action." In The Heart of Change, Kotter, with the help of Dan Cohen, a partner at Deloitte Consulting, shows how his eight-step approach has worked at over 100 organizations. In just about every case, change happened because the players were led to "see" and "feel" the change. In one example, a sales representative underscores a sense of urgency to change a manufacturing process by showing a videotaped interview with an unhappy customer; in another, a purchasing manager makes his point to senior management about corporate waste by displaying on the company's boardroom table the 424 different kinds of gloves that the company had procured through different vendors at vastly different prices. Well written and loaded with real-life examples and practical advice, The Heart of Change towers over other change-management titles. Managers and employees at organizations both big and small will find much to draw from. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
John Kotter's international bestseller Leading Change struck a powerful chord with legions of managers everywhere. It acknowledged the cynicism, pain, and fear they faced in implementing large-scale change-but also armed them with an eight-step plan of action for leaping boldly forward in a turbulent world.
Now, Kotter and coauthor Dan S. Cohen delve deeper into the subject of change to get to the heart of how change actually happens. Through compelling, real-life stories from people in the trenches, in all kinds of organizations, the authors attack the fundamental problem that underlies every major transformation: How do you go beyond simply getting your message across to truly changing people's behavior?
Based on interviews within over 100 organizations in the midst of large-scale change, The Heart of Change delivers the simple yet provocative answer to this question, forever altering the way organizations and individuals approach change. While most companies believe change happens by making people think differently, Kotter and Cohen say the key lies in making them feel differently. They introduce a new dynamic-"see-feel-change"-that fuels action by showing people potent reasons for change that spark their emotions.
Organized around the revolutionary eight-step change process introduced in Leading Change, this story-driven book shows how the best change leaders use not just reports or analysis, but gloves, video cameras, airplanes, office design, and other concrete elements to impel people toward positive action. The authors reveal how this appeal to the heart-over the mind-motivates people to overcome even daunting obstacles to change and produce breathtaking results.
For individuals in every walk of life and companies in every stage of change, this compact, no-nonsense book captures the heart-and the how-of successful change.
John P. Kotter, world-renowned expert on leadership at the Harvard Business School, is the author of many books, including the award-winning, best-selling Leading Change. Dan S. Cohen is a Principal with Deloitte Consulting LLC.
Customer Reviews:
Not as useful as "Leading Change" by Kotter.......2007-06-28
Full of anecdotes about how the principles in "Leading Change" were implemented, I found this less helpful than that book in implementing a culture change. None of the scenarios were close enough to our organization to make a meaningful impact on the management team. A good read though, illustrating Kotter's excellent roadmap to change.
Addresses an Often Forgotten Part of Management Studies---People!.......2007-05-07
In this age of data, management is still about people. This book hits that aspect square on the head. It provides a realistic 8 step process for managing change filled with examples that bring the steps to life. The book is primarily written for managers of change, but the concepts can be useful to anyone at any level of an organization that's in a state of change. (And what organizations aren't?) It can be a bit dry at times, but the stories spice it up and make it bearable. Overall excellent content.
Just what we needed!.......2006-07-15
This book hits the "heart" of what many managers miss in planning change initiatives. This helps us remember that change isn't all number and business decisions. It's the people. I was able to immediately apply some of the ideas and resteered a change initiative successfully. Now all of my supervisors are reading and learning.
Fundamentals for helping an organization undergo change successfully.......2006-04-03
This book is the textbook for how an organization can successfully lead with change. I have used the 8-step method with various organizations and successfully 'seen-felt-changed' for the better.
Best Change Management Book I've Read to Date.......2006-02-28
I'm now in a "Change Management" role with my work, and decided to read some texts on the subject to further my understanding of the topic. Of those books that I've read, this one has clearly been the most helpful. Kotter articulates the steps of change in a way that connected with me, and made it real with a number of relevant examples. It's not onerous to read (
<200 pages) but equally isn't "lightweight." While I would never recommend reading only a single book on the topic, I would definitely recommend that this be one of the books you read!

Book Description
"I am so pleased to have written my first children's book and to have my dear friend Wendell Minor illustrate it. I thought it would be a daunting project, but with six grandchildren and eleven stepgrandchildren, I've been telling stories to children for a long time."
-- Mary Higgins Clark
Thomas loved his summer visits to his grandmother's on Cape Cod. He spent hours wondering about the sailing ships of the past and imagining their stories. He dreamed of being on a sailing ship himself. One afternoon after a night of terrible thunderstorms, Thomas finds, deep in the sand, a weathered, old-fashioned belt buckle. When he picks it up, a boy his own age, Silas Rich, who was a cabin boy on a ship called the Monomoy that sailed almost 250 years ago, appears. Suddenly the world of sailing ships is very near as Silas tells his tale.
Beloved and bestselling author Mary Higgins Clark tells a story of mystery and adventure that will transport readers to a time and place beyond their imaginings in her first book for children. Wendell Minor's inspired paintings make a time long ago very real.

Another hit for Mary Higgins Clark!.......2007-05-22
Mary Higgins Clark is a wonderful storyteller and it is very evident with this children's book. Being an avid fan, I purchased the book to pass on to my granddaughter when she gets a little older. The illustrations are beautiful too. It will be a pleasure to introduce my granddaughter to Mary Higgins Clark, through her children's books!!
First rate for MHC's First Children's Book.......2007-05-14
I have been a fan of MHC for years. I was delighted with her first children's book especially since it took place where I spent many of my summers over the years. Am passing this book on to younger readers.
Awesome Children's book.......2007-05-12
I have be a fan of this author for years. This book surpassed all my expectations. What superb fiction for young readers! As always she uses her talent to spark the imagination without all the violence and gunplay of the modern world. I look forward to sharing the next with my children, too!
No younger than 4 year olds for this one.......2007-05-12
I read this book to my 4 year old granddaughter, who loves books and is beginning to read now. The book held her interest well, and I loved the illustrations! It was great to be reading her a book that had an actually story, instead of the standard children's books. She loved the story, and in fact, after we read it, she wanted to start playing out her own version of the story...."Grandma! Pretend that you find a belt buckle in the sand, and I appear as the ghost of the boy who was given it to." She really got into being on a ship back in the days of big sailing ships, and had so much fun with it!
I love Mary Higgins Clark's books for myself, and loved being able to read my granddaughter one of her books that was written for children. I hope she'll write more.
Terrific Children's Book.......2007-05-12
This terrific book is the expected quality of Mary Higgins Clark. It is exciting to be able to share one of my favorite authors with the young children in our family. We all enjoyed this beautiful book and the great story. It is a wonderful addition to a family library.

Book Description
An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable. Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives they've transformedpeople whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed. Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.
Customer Reviews:
a must read.......2007-06-27
This a fantastic book and an excellent read. I recommend it for anyone who is a therapist or physician as well as all of those who require our services.
Creative and engaging.......2007-06-19
Dr. Doidge does what many others can not do -- write on a technical subject in such a way that all can access and understand the subject. Yet he does this in such an engaging and personal manner as to make the subject so enjoyable. I must state, The Brain That Changes Itself should have a wide audience -- as it has applications in "self help," "education," "personal development," etc. To understand the implications of the material in Dr. Doige's book is to expand our own potentials for problem solving and our own growth. Very cool reading indeed. Roger
Fantastic.......2007-06-17
Contrary to popular perception, the brain is actually a plastic organ which can alter its own structure and function even into old age - and the science of neuroplasticity challenges the idea that the adult brain is fixed and unchanging. THE BRAIN THAT CHANGES ITSELF: STORIES OF PERSONAL TRIUMPH FROM THE FRONTIERS OF BRAIN SCIENCE gathers together case histories of people whose conditions had been dismissed as hopeless - including that of a woman born with half a brain which rewired itself to work as a whole. The stories may seem fantastic initially, but all work together to illustrate the flexibility of the brain and its ability to compensate and recover - perfect for any health library.

Astonishing Stories of Damaged Brains Repairing Themselves.......2007-06-15
"The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph from the Frontiers of Brain Science" by Norman Doidge, is an easily readable, enjoyable, and thought-provoking book that gives the nonprofessional an overview of the new science of neuroplasticity--the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections over the life span. We learn that the brain is no longer thought of as being hard-wired, that people are no longer believed to be merely products of their genes and environment, and that damaged brains have the remarkable ability to repair themselves.
Doidge recounts stories of real people who have benefited from advances in neuroplasticity. He gives us just enough background information about each case so that we find ourselves genuinely caring about these people--each person comes to life, like characters in a fine novel. He tells us stories about stroke victims with major physical dysfunction who were able to recover nearly everything that they lost, and then go on to live normal lives again. There is an astonishing story of a woman who lost her balance mechanisms; with help from neuroplasticians, she was able to rewire her brain to use other senses to achieve the same goal. We learn that neuroplastic physicians can design high-technology devices capable of bringing sight to the blind, hearing to the deaf, and movement to the paralyzed. We learn about an utterly courageous woman who, completely on her own, was able to rewire her brain to compensate for a large number of severe learning disabilities. Eventually, she goes on to found a very successful network of schools devoted to the methodologies she used.
The basic concept is simple: the brain can change itself--rewire itself, so to speak. Often it needs only a little structured help to force it into making the new connections.
The implications of this new science are staggering. Imagine retraining the brains of the severely mentally disadvantaged--the learning disabled, the autistic...perhaps even the psychopath--so that they are able to function almost normally in society. Imagine the impact this new science may have on prison rehabilitation, special education, psychiatry, and rehabilitation therapy, to name but a few. This is a truly astonishing new frontier, and Doidge makes the concepts easy and enjoyable. I recommend this book highly.
incredible new technology.......2007-06-08
My own child's life has been dramatically impacted by the Arrowsmith Program described in chapter two of this book. His I.Q. shot up tremendously, he has become incredibly sharp. The best Speech therapists I could find could not help his auditory processing disorder, severe short term memory issues, dyslexia and attention deficit like this program did. Soon, he will be at average or above in all areas and we are only in the program for nine months. Also, I am a remedial reading specialist, with training in many different reading programs, and I could never have accomplished what this program did for my son. Read this book. It could change a child's life, if you pass the info on.(I am just a parent, not employed by Arrowsmith in any way. However, like any parent would be, I am eternally grateful to them.)P.s., their website, is[...] check it out.

Des, Virginia’s slickest gangsta, is about to become a dad when he is charged with the murder of his own attorney. But when Des’s nephew is killed in the high-stakes heroin trade and Des learns that someone close to him okayed the hit, the dyed-in-the-wool gangsta sets aside the Bible for the gospel of the streets–even if it means risking the one person who’s always had his back.

DISSAPOINTMENT.......2007-06-22
This book was horrible compared to the first one.. It seems as if Nikke needs to read her own novels before doing new ones. The character personalities did not match up! a hustlers wife was my favorite book of all time and this was a DISSAPOINTMENT. I was waiting patiently to hear of the beautiful love yarni and des shared but i only got a young minded des which was not him in the first book, and a borin mediocre relationship. I just wish i never read it..

And if you did read A hustler's wife, you don't feel like you are being hand fed the same details from the past book. EVERYTHING FLOWS SO WELL. If you are a fan of fast moving, writing that puts you right in the streets.......then this book is for you!!!
