Book Description
The book contains twenty-three stirring accounts of what life flying as air-crew in World War Two was really like. The writers are a mixed bunch of pilots, navigators and gunners who flew medium and heavy bombers or Mosquitoes. It conveys the terror of being coned by German searchlights over the target, attacks by Luftwaffe night-fighters, catastrophic damage to aircraft and the ensuing struggle to keep the machine airborne on the return trip to base. It tells of the comradeship between the crew and often the humor between them which was often bred from fear.
The gentle and unassuming narratives convey the sense of purpose that these men felt in doing one of the most dangerous jobs in the war. It is a fitting tribute to those that survived and the many thousands who died in the struggle against Hitler's dreadful ambitions in Europe.

Women SOE Agents in France in WWII.......2004-04-25
This is an excellent book. It's a well-researched, highly readable account of 4 women SOE agents in France. Although the book is purportedly about 4 women, there is a lot of general information on the SOE, and detailed stories of many other agents who were involved with he 4 women featured in the story. There is also an account of the British secret service' controversial decision to use agents as bait during the war, sacrificing their own agents' lives and freedom to misinform the Germans.
(...) She went to school with one of the agents who was killed by the Nazis and interviewed many people who knew the female agents herself. She's also the one who solved the mystery of the 4th agent, all acknowleged in Kramer's book.

Book Description
Off We Go...Down in Flame is the story of a WWII bombardier in the air over Europe as a prisoner of war in Romania. Among the many photographs is one of the author's aircraft, SHILAY-LEE, going down in flame over the Danube.
He weaves a gripping story of his capture and imprisonment and the tedium and humor of prison life. One of the humorous episodes chronicles an ill-fated attempt, along with an Australian pilot, to escape from the prison. Almost a full year before the war's end, Altvater and approximately 1200 other Allied prisoners were dramatically rescued and returned to their bases in Italy.
The author tells of his childhood in the Great Depression in New Jersey with immigrant parents: his father, a chemist from Germany, and his mother, a Jew from Hungary. To escape domestica strife, he walked lonely miles to the Newary airport to look at the airplanes. His coming of age years, following his father's death, are also a good read.
This is no flag-waving book. There's no glory here. It tells the story of a badly burned bombardier, parachuting into a field in ememy territory, and finding the morphine styrette missing from his first-aid kit.
Altvater concludes his story with his views, at age 82, on the "insanity of war."
