Book Description
A comprehensive introduction to the materials, tools, equipment, and techniques used to make unique beads with a variety of shapes, colors, and finishes. The straightforward instructions discuss topics that include conditioning raw clay and making simple shapes; producing more complex shapes, such as rounds, canes, and spirals; decorating the beads with foils, powders, and milléfiori; and creating faux effects like ivory, bone, turquoise, marble, and silver. A gallery of beads by internationally renowned artists, hundreds of step-by-step photographs of new beads designed by the author, and a clay gauge that allows one to estimate how much clay is necessary to make a specific quantity of beads are included, making this a comprehensive guide that will provide inspiration, demonstrate the range of effects that can be achieved in polymer clay, and teach beaders how to incorporate these beads into jewelry designs.

Techniques for Creating Beautiful Ornamental Beads.......2007-06-27
This is by far the best book on beads and techniques in polymer clay. Easy to follow directions. Would recommend this be top on your list for next purchase.
P-clay beginners, This is THE book.......2007-06-12
I'm a total polymer clay beginner. There are some really good p-clay books out there. This book is the best I've bought so far. The photos and layout are well-though out, informative, imaginative but not cluttered. The top of the page is a gallery with jewelry made from the various beads being featured. The side margins have helpful hints yet the step-by-step instructions are clear and guides you through everything and I mean everything. I previously bought the Art of Polymer Clay by Lark which is an excellent book but beyond my skill. However, with this book as a companion, a novice will be inspired and encouraged to advance to the more difficult p-clay techniques.
A lot of techniques in one book.......2007-06-08
I own a lot of books and usually they only contain one or two things I find useful. This book provides detail on many differnt techniques that you can use on many different pieces - not just beads. It has a lot of helpful pictures and clear instructions. Some prior knowledge of polymer clay is useful, but not necessary to start using the book.
Making Polymer Clay Beads: Step-by-Step Techniques for Creating Beautiful Ornamental Beads.......2007-05-30
That a wonderful book.
Helpful tTips and Inspiration.......2007-05-25
I am not a beginner to Polymer Clay and have many other books. I ordered this book just in case there was something new in it for me. Well there was, plenty. Even the tip for storing clay was liberating. Why had I not thought of such a simple way of storing my clay so that I could see what was in my stash at a glance? The step by step instructions are really clear and cover some of the gaps not covered in other books. A beginner would be well served by the clear inspirational bead ideas in this book as would a more experienced clayer. The images are clear and the layout is very user friendly. Well done. If you are a bead fanatic this a a great book.

Great book for beginners to experts!.......2005-11-03
This is a super set to learn from and refer back to! If you're a beginner - check it out! There's so much to learn from it!
must have for any lamp worker.......2005-08-04
this set is the best/ most information i have seen for learning to lampwork. packed with information it covers most techniques and even guides the beginner on how to set up a studio, great buy, worth every penny.
The best book in its class.......2003-12-30
If you could have only one book, it would be wise to consider this one. I have been in this industry many years and this is by far the best book I have seen out there.
It's Just OKAY!.......2003-12-24
To the naive public this book is great! Riddled with typos and inconsistant captions this book is not ideal for understanding formal flameworking. The book includes information about the masters and their techniques but trivializes their skill by including no-names and wanna-be's along side. A good amount of important technical information is provided, but through a string of often choppy inconsistant paragraph fragments. This is an excellent PICTURE BOOK leaving a lot to be desired from the academic artisan. Is a great reference for suppliers. In many cases the information falls short of being cohesive and understandable. Recommended for the glass-goer. Recommended for the amateur glassblower (for inspiration). Has popular appeal void of substance.
absolutely amazing.......2003-01-20
It should get more stars than five, the history of lampworking portion of the book is almost worth the price of the book itself. The history portion is only a small portion of the set. I have been doing lampworking for about 3 years now and I search the internet for anything reguarding lampworking often and this book set has tons of stuff I have never seen. excellent.

An excellent overview.......2007-06-22
John Bridge has put together an excellent reference for the experienced and novice tile setter alike, and if you're looking to learn the basics to put together a project for the first time, this book is a must read. John's light, conversational style makes the book a quick read, and as mentioned in another review, the online forum on the author's website is also an invaluable reference.
Highly recommended to those who need a to learn the ABCs of tile.
Tile Your World.......2007-05-13
I bought the bookas a gift for a friend who is quite interested in home renovation technique. She was thrilled by it and judging by her reaction, it must be an informative and well written book.
Everything you need to know!.......2007-02-13
This is the ultimate book for tile setters and for those who want to be tile setters. John focuse on all of the little things that the amateurs don't. focus on. The actual tiling itself is the last thing he focuse on. He will teach you the science of laying different types of tiles. You will learn everyting from floor deflection to room layout to determing the square footage and much more. I even learned of a new underlayment product made by Schluter that does not transfer cracks to the tiles due to structural movement and also a waterproofing membrane to use in shower tile installations! I have learned so much Thank you.
Great book for me - Novice/JOAT.......2007-02-06
We recently built our new home & I used this book & Setting Tile (Fine Homebuilding) to do all the tile work. One of our best & proudest features is the masterbath I built with lg garden tub and oversized corner dual head shower with dual niche all tiled together - We love it. I can't believe I was able to do it all with friends & family and alot of sweat/work.
Saved thousands over best few estimates. I see why the labor is so pricy now....
Recommend both books.
Nice compliment to the TYW forums.......2007-01-19
The book's got a lot of good information. A bit heavy on mud work (which I don't plan to do), but he does at least include an appendix from one of the CBU manufacturers. The website forum's priceless, though....

Book Description
In the hands of an expert ceramist, the once-simple cup can become an extraordinary work of art--as these 500 magnificent examples so beautifully prove. The exciting pieces come from an international array of artists, each with a unique perspective. The stylishly varied collection has a little bit of everything: the cups range from handbuilt to wheel-thrown, practical to sculptural, round to square. Benjamin Schulman's "Stacked Teacup Set" takes a strictly functional approach, while Heather O'Brien's "Dessert Cups on Stand" focuses on aesthetic form rather than usefulness. Annette Gates' "Espresso Shot Cups with Rubies" has a surface design of simple abstract lines and dots of glaze and jewels. Some are whimsical, others starkly conceptual. Every one is a treat for the eye.
Customer Reviews:
great idea book.......2007-01-09
I bought this for a pottery student of mine after she bought the teapot book. Both are great fodder for the potter's imagination, and for me, a wonderful set of examples that get me away from the idea that my own pottery has to be as "perfect" as a wedgwood teacup. The pitcher book will be the next to grace the shelves of my studio library.
Great for Potters and Art Lovers.......2006-12-19
We just opened the pottery area of our store this year. The learning curve is steep: setting up the studio, hiring teachers, choosing clay bodies and glazes, and wheels, repairing kilns and firing other peoples work! So, I have purchased a lot of pottery books recently! This one is very cool. It doesn't teach you how to make anything, but it is a great way to see a huge variety of possibilites. I just love looking through it. There are several cups in there that I want to try to build (when I get better skills). The Lark Ceramics books are excellent resource books-stock your library up with them. You won't be sorry.
500 Cups: Ceramic Explorations of Utility and Grace.......2006-03-23
It is a good reference book for the ceramic artist and collector. It provides wonderful pictures, inspiration, and ideas.
A formidable tour of the art of ceramic cup-making.......2006-02-18
Anyone who thinks there is very little difference between one cup and another would have that notion blown away by simply flipping open any page of this book. When the teacher of a local community college pottery course saw this book, she asked everyone in her classes to refer to it before beginning to design their next cup projects. It opened their minds to some of the infinite possibilities available to practitioners of the potter's craft.
Awesome!!!.......2006-01-16
Lark publishes fabulous books for ceramic lovers and this is no exception. The Cup book is the series' third in my personal library.

Book Description
The first comprehensive how-to book on the topic! Contemporary ceramists have adapted traditional printmaking procedures to transfer images onto clay surfaces. And, with this thorough resource, anyone can take advantage of these techniques in their own home studio—even those with no printmaking background. The simple processes don’t require fancy equipment. Use silk-screen decals with light-sensitive emulsions to create a master image: then cover with glazes, and voilá! Use colored slips for unique monoprints. Work with stencils, relief blocks, or stamps, trying a variety of materials to mark the clay surface. Each method is carefully laid out in numerous photos, and shown on a finished piece. More than 100 images by leading contemporary artists showcase the techniques and provide a wealth of inspiration.

Image Transfer on Clay.......2007-06-08
Looks like many processes will be fine to use on my clay but so far I haven't tried any specific ones.
Excellent reference on the subject.......2007-05-20
Very up-to-date information on a plethora of methods for image transfer on clay. Especially loved the section on laser printing on decals and can't wait to give it a try.
Informative Book.......2007-03-13
Even though it did not have the answere to my specific question, it gave information on other means of achiveing the results needed. Very good source of information.
Paul Scott did this first.......2007-03-07
This is not the first book as the editorial says. Paul Scott wrote on this subject years ago (His is an excellent book).
Something New.......2007-01-10
With twenty years of ceramic work and countless hours of reading, it was delightful to find a book with something new. There are wonderful possibilities to explore, thanks to the inspiration provided in this step-by-step guide. The photographs make it easy to understand and the finished products are representative of what actually turns out. Even a beginner could be proud of the results. I strongly encourage the painterly to pick up this guide. My slab trays have turned out beautifully and they have that printmaking quality that gives them a fine art finish.

The Pottery Barn Design Library was requested by my daughter as a gift for Christmas so I sent for it as soon as I learned of her wish. Pottery Bran is not available in Australia but she has copies from visits to the States and just LOVES it ! She is more than delighted with the Library and said she is savouring it page by page. I have yet to sit and go completely thur it.. Something for me to look forward to.
Great ideas and photos, specific tips.......2007-01-04
The plainly laid out interior paint plans for the entire home was worth the cost alone, but then there are the pictures and ideas, and most of all the license to step outside of the box a little. Love it.
Great book.......2006-07-03
Very informational and has a lot of pictures. I wish I would have bought this one before purchasing two seperate titles, because this one includes them.
Pottery Barn Home.......2006-03-18
I ordered a book Pottery Barn Home. It arrived here much earlier than indicated in the e-mail. However, I noticed that the book had a price sticker from Costco on it (and the price on the sticker was actually lower than the Amazon's price!), so it was obvious that it was a return from Costco. Amazon.com should at least remove the price sticker from another store before reselling them to customers. The book was in o.k. condition, with the dent on one of the corners from transportation.

Book Description
Tree-ear is an orphan boy in a 12th-century Korean potters’ village. When he accidentally breaks a pot, he must work for the master to pay for the damage by setting off on a difficult and dangerous journey that will change his life forever.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2007-05-31
The book I read was A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park. This book was about a potter and a young boy named Tree-Ear. The potter was making pottery and trying to get a commission. Min, the potter, hired Tree-Ear to help him with certain jobs for him around the village. Tree-Ear lived with Crane-Man under a bridge. Crane-Man only had one leg that he could walk on. Min had a wife and one kid, but his kid died. Tree-Ear had been watching Min through a tiny hole in a shed. Once he saw him he knew he wanted to work for him. The setting of this story was in a small village on the west coast of Korea in the mid to late 12th century.
A Single Shard was a tremendous book. I recommend this book to anyone of age 11 or above. This book was full of excitement and was impossible to stop reading. The author, Linda Sue Park, is an excellent writer and I would read all of her books. I think everybody should read A Single Shard.
A Single Shard.......2007-05-22
A Single Shard by Linda Sue Park displays the fictional story of Tree-ear, an orphaned boy living in a twelfth-century Korean potter's village. He is happy living under a bridge with Crane-man, but when Tree-ear accidentally breaks a pot, he must work nine days for potter Min to pay for it. Once he is accepted into an apprenticeship, Tree-ear learns that making a pot is more complicated than he expected. Tree-ear learns many things from master Min, but most of all, he learns about himself. As he is sent on a dangerous journey to the King's Court to show his master's pottery, Tree-ear realizes that his life is about to change forever. He has to learn to adjust to a new home, a new name, and a new life. One thing that I loved about the book is that it is very natural and is something that you could relate to. Also, the book is set back in time, so you can really feel the culture of ancient Korea. I would recommend this book to children age 9 through 12. A Single Shard is a wonderful story of self-discovery, adventure, and hope.
The bookn is awsome!!!.......2007-05-08
I love this book. It is about a boy who tries his best to live his life. He lives with someone who is very old and wise, but soon something bad happebs to his. I recomment this book for kids of all ages even if you are 19. This book is good. Liked it most because it helps you understand that you are not the only one who might have a deah in the family. It in some way kind of helps you deal with it. It also teaches you responcibility. This boys sets off on a journey and deals with killers and people who tried to kill the boy. I really enjoyed this book and think you should rea it to so you can enjoy it just as much as I did.
A Single Shard Success.......2007-04-12
A Single Shard Success
The Newberry award winning novel A Single Shard by Linda Sue Parks is a story of adventure about a boy who went from living under a bridge to learning from and being adopted by the greatest potter in either the state or the country. How could this happen you ask? It took many things: an accident, a debt, a determined kid, an old man's wisdom, hard work, accidental spying, skills, another bad thing, an offer, a long journey by foot, a little luck, good use of wits, courage, more luck, and the death of a very close friend for all this to happen. This all could have happened because as miraculous as it may have seemed this story could really have happened a long time ago in ancient Korea (This story is based on a real artifact that inspired the author).
The main character in this story is a kid named Tree-ear (he was named after the fungus that grows in rings around trees because he went unnoticed even when listening in on a conversation just like the tree-ear fungus goes unnoticed). Tree-ear would have to fend for himself if it were not for Crane-man. One day when he had free time, he went to master potter Min's house to watch him work his potting magic, but Min was not there, so he went to inspect his pots. Min then came back and yelled "Thief". Oh no, Tree-ear had dropped the pot! In return Tree-ear must work for min for nine days. After this Tree-ear begs to work for Min no payment, hoping to learn and become a potter. After not learning anything after a half a year he asks why "Potters teach their sons... and you're not my son." Tree-ears heart was shattered, he had begun to see Min like the father he never had.
When something critical to Min's hopes and desires occurs (a job at the palace) Tree-ear is the only one who can save Min now even after what happened. After the journey ( which was almost a failure) Tree-ear comes back to the village to find his old life, his life has been crushed and Min's the only friend left, but will Min return the favor and help Tree-ear or let his heart destroy him? In the end tree-ear didn't know whether to be happy or sad, he had a new life but his old life (he did like his old life) was gone completely with no hope of recovery.
All in all, I think that A Single Shard is an amazing book with some happy and some sad parts in it and is an over all good book. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has read my review. On a scale of one to ten I would give this book a nine and a half because there isn't a book yet that that is perfect, but this one came close!
Review of A Single Shard.......2007-02-14
The book THE SINGLE SHARD is about two friends who live under a bridge by a stream. There names are Tree -Ear and Crane-Man. Tree-Ear breaks one of Min's pots, Min is a potter in a village called Ch'ulp'o in Korea. Tree-Ear starts working for Min for no pay.
Tree-Ear is the main character in the book. I think Tree-Ear is patient, strong, and consistent. He always brings back rice for Crane-Man. That is a good kid, I think.

Displayed on each page are bowls that reinvent and reinterpret the form, and use techniques from across the globe and through the centuries. More importantly, every piece, such as Kate Maury's wheel-thrown porcelain, Stephen F. Fabrico's slab-built bowl with handles, and Ruchika Madan's stoneware Fruit Bowl, testifies to the artist's boundless inventiveness. Captions give each bowl's size, with details on its material and glazes.

Inspiration from 500 beautiful clay bowls.......2007-05-14
I'm a clay artist who does hand building...My teacher brought in this book to share with our
pottery class. I and the rest of the class were simply blown away by the originality and brilliance of these clay artists. We spent half the class passing the book around and saying to one anothr "how about THIS one?"
None of us wanted to put the book down and get back to working on our own pieces.
The book is quite reasonable in price and I was so captivated by these beautiful photographs that I went ahead and bought the the other two books in the series which are specific to animals and teapots...The photographs on each page are simply spectacular...memorable....something I wouldn't directly copy in my own work, but much of it is just insipirational...and informative. Description of how the piece was fired...the method for it's execution (whether hand or wheel built). These books are a collection of the most original works I've ever seen. Although I don't build animals of out clay, I'm as thrilled to own each book from this series as I am
"500 Bowls".
Inspired!.......2007-04-04
This book is beautifully photgraphed, like all the 500 series books, and weather you put it on your coffee table or in your studio, it lights up the imagination and inspires the artist.
beautiful simple bowls.......2006-12-06
It is the simplicity of the bowl on the cover that draw us in, though it is difficult, as there is no cover credit in the edition I own, to find who that artist is. Deep inside we find that bowl and another by potter/artist Judy Motzkin. Patient searching pays off. This elegant little book, with this elegant saggar fired bowl on the cover is a treasure.
Amazingly different.......2006-11-13
I am astonished that anyone could find this book a dissapointment! Only, not, when I read the reveiws that were not too great were written by people who wanted a more functional or traditional result,perhaps...
I like it.Once again, this book opened up an area in my own artistic approach-to "think outside the Bowl"! If you are an artist,or sculptor that has been at it a good 10 or 15 years,as I am,and you need a new vien to tap, this is a great book to get.Mostly,I found it treated the surfaces, interior or exterior, like a canvas.not a vessel to be filled with cereal or mashed potatoes, but as an object,to be viewed, and give the onlooker an "eyeful" It's again, one of the best in the lark 500 books.
Bowl (n) 1. A hemispherical vessel..........2005-08-21
I have a hunger for bowls. Objects that can hold other objects, particularly food, fascinate me. This book feeds my hunger with beautiful color photos of more bowls than my brain can hold in one sitting. Bowls that make me laugh, purr, gasp with amazement, and covet. Oh how I covet. Bowls that hold other bowls that hold other bowls...
And for the frustrated potter in me, the information on glazes and firing deepens my appreciation of each and every hemispherical vessel. I'll have this one, and that one, and the little one over there...

Book Description
No other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais’ image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality. Sharkus’ painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, with selected artists’ notes.

Great inspirational book.......2007-05-20
As a potter, I love books like this just as much as those with more technical information. I turn to them over and over when the muse is taking a little siesta. Tons of great ideas here for everyone, no matter what your style.
500 Animals in Clay: Contemporary Expressions of the Animal Form.......2007-01-15
Like all the 500 Lark books this one has beautiful photographs and lots of inspiration. If you are an animal lover, and ceramist, like I am you will love it. I would like a little more information about how the pieces are created, but that is rarely the case with these books - still well worth the price.

Great Idea Resource.......2007-02-26
I bought this book and looked through it with post its to label all the interesting teapot ideas I was drawn to. When considering this book, I wasn't particularly drawn to the cover teapot and wondered if I would be disappointed in the authors picks, but I wasn't. This is a great visual resource for my classroom and studio.
As someone else has commented, I would have given this book 5 stars if the author hadn't repeated multiple photos of very similar teapots by the same artist.
teapots galore.......2006-11-13
A beautiful book on contemporary approaches to a traditional vessel.I am not into funtion as I am into form, but what a book! I am glad I bought it.Sometimes,I found that despite my aversion to making utilitarian things, there is so much I do derive from the pictures that I can adapt the notion of form and function to a sculptural work, independent of the notion of tea pot.
art teacher.......2006-11-10
As a ceramics teacher who teaches her students how to build teapots, this book is a wonderful resource. The pictures are great and it helps give students a better understanding of what a teapot can look like.
I'm not a little teapot..........2005-08-20
But if I were a little teapot, I'd be one of the beautiful ones in this book. There are teapots both plain, and beyond description to fascinate, amuse and amaze you. If you know a little about firing ceramics, and glaze technology, the information provided will deepen your appreciation of each teapot. You may find that some of these artists are in your area, and have ceramics for sale. Or if you just like teapots, there enough teapots here in beautiful color photos to sate your appetite.
Beautiful and Imaginative.......2004-03-12
500 TEAPPOTS is an wonderful book and is sure to inspire both potters and tea drinkers alike. It is a wonderful companion to 500 BOWLS. I hope they publish ANOTHER 500 TEAPOTS (BOWLS, too).
