    Book Description

The origins of Clarke County--how it came to be, and why--are examined here for the first time. Historian Warren R. Hofstra not only tells the story of the people who made Clarke County a separate place but also puts the movement for its formation in the context of Virginia and U.S. politics. It is a story fascinating in detail and rich in implication, for the issues that strained old Frederick to the breaking point--local control vs. an expanded federal government, conformity vs. pluralism, agrarian values vs. commercial pursuits--are still featured in the political debates today both regionally and nationally.

5 out of 5 stars Places and times, snatches of melodies in prose........2003-06-26

Charles Jones has a superb grasp of place, and proves it in this book about one place: La Honda, a California town buried in a deep valley and hidden behind and among ancient trees. Writing in the back room of a saloon, living in various places such as a cabin, an old ranch building and a blue tent, Jones writes perceptively about the feeling of his place. He begins "Coming home to a place I had never been before was easier than I had expected ..." Then he unrolls his written tapestry of the people, the times past and present and even the myths of the place. Photographs by Susan Friedman perfectly embody Jones' mobile sculpture of words.

I use this book as a reading selection for my middle school students. It is a great read to teach the genre of historical non-fiction. My students enjoyed learning about the history of education for black Americans and it helped them to appreciate the educational opportunities that they participate in now as Americans.

5 out of 5 stars Seperate but not equal.......2001-04-19

To me this book is one of the best books i've ever read. This book is about the struggles of young african americans and their struggles with education. In 1957 they tried to get black students to go in a white school and they had to walk to school by a wall of soldiers. This book is also good because each chapter is a different story about another persons struggle. This is a very good book.

It's a dream that was old even in Thoreau's time: build a cabin in the woods, escape the city, live life on one's own terms. Like many others who grew up in the back-to-the-land days, David Brill nursed that dream while pursuing a career and living a life that kept him out of the woods and in a climate-controlled office.

Confronted with a disintegrating marriage and a deep well of unhappiness, Brill decided to make good on his desires, purchasing a patch of woodland in the Tennessee hills and building a sturdy home on the edge of the wild. A Separate Place recounts his adventures and occasional misadventures in self-transformation--which included shedding his "Banana Republic khakis, a purple L.L. Bean Gore-Tex jacket, and Birkenstock clogs" in favor of camo (and sometimes no clothes at all) and reacquainting himself with the ways of wind and weather.

"I've learned," Brill writes, "not to underestimate the appetite of a woodstove in winter, and I've developed the aim and precision necessary to drop the splitting maul right into the tiny cracks that will explode a section of seasoned hardwood." He also learned, to gauge by this touching memoir, a great deal about himself, and if his eye is more often turned inward than toward the woods, he still offers plenty of homespun advice on getting by in the forest--and on dealing with loss. --Gregory McNamee

    Book Description

In 1998, David Brill left the stresses and suburban angst of Knoxville and struck out for the pristine Tennessee woods. A Separate Place chronicles his journey to the retreat he created in a 630-square-foot cabin on sixty-eight acres of riverfront wilderness.

Carving out his place in rustic Morgan County, Brill reconnects with nature and returns to a life of greater simplicity. Here, while tending to the nearly over-whelming task of overseeing the clearing of the land and building a home, he lays a foundation for a more fulfilling life, and a deeper relationship with his two daughters. It is also here that he must come to terms with the bittersweet ending of his eighteen-year marriage.

In these candid and moving reflections on nature, work, family, and love, Brill charts his sometimes exhilarating, sometimes painful evolution as a father and as a man. He shares invaluable life lessons-both humorous and poignant-from his adventures with the buddies who come to lend moral support to a midlife mountaineering feat with his brother to the difficult process of making peace with his wife in the aftermath of divorce. Honest, insightful, and wise, A Separate Place will resonate with all those who yearn for a sanctuary of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Getting away is in all of us.......2005-03-05

Brill is my hero. He hiked the Appalachian Trail (which I should have done after college--now a dream of retirement), dreamt of and built his get-a-way of seclusion, and wrote excellent books of both experiences. My dreams exactly! This is a very nice book detailing the problems and joys of fulfilling a dream. Who hasn't dreamt of a simpler life? We can all relate. Indifferent to another reviewer of this book, there are echoes of Thoreau's Walden Pond. Brill quit his high-stress job. He knew there was more to life. Thoreau, too, disagreed with the "modern" life style. He worked only enough to sustain life, and therefore had more time to enjoy the rest of life's experiences. Just thinking about a cabin in the woods brings a feeling of relaxation to me. Just thinking about hiking the A.T. (Brill's other book), with no deadlines, no clocks, carrying only what you need for shelter and food, soaking in the scenery, gives me something to look forward to. Sure there are problems to both; building a house creates many problems, hikers deal with many blisters, bad weather and aching muscles. However, it is these minor problems that make the good experiences even better. If you want to escape a little and live Brill's dreams, read his books. Also along the same lines, and very much recommended are: Jon Katz's book on finding his retreat in the woods, Running to the Mountain; Elizabeth Gilbert's, The Last American; and, Mark Phillips', My Father's Cabin. If you can think of any more, please inform me at john@delbridge.net.

    1 out of 5 stars Run Ladies!.......2004-03-14

David Brill's portrayal of his own divorce is why the divorce rate is 50% in America today. He is obviously a very self-centered and selfish man who is trying to trick the reader into believing that he has done everything imaginable to keep his 17 year marriage from ending. Was this book published to use as toilet tissue?

    1 out of 5 stars Sequel Needed.......2004-03-03

This book needs a sequel written by Susan Brill. One-sided divorce stories need to be categorized either as fiction or self-help which this author obviously needs.

    1 out of 5 stars David Brill....Martyr Divorcee.......2004-03-03

David Brill portrays himself as THE MARTYR in an unhappy marriage. I seriously question this author's motives for having this book published. Any man who would abandon his wife (and 2 daughters) after 17 years by leaving a handwritten note needs his head examined!

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical and evocative.......2003-02-02

David Brill's book manages to beautifully capture a sense of place with his vivid descriptions of the landscape and people of modern-day southern Appalachia. The natural world serves as a lush backdrop to Brill's painful, yet ultimately affirming story of the end days of his eighteen year marriage.

Too many books about divorce offer only a laundry list of practical advice. David Brill lets us in on the truth of the matter, which is that each divorce is as unique as the marriage that precedes it. With a stark honesty that is never maudlin or exploitative, Brill offers readers a deeply personal glimpse into his own divorce journey.

If the story were not compelling enough, Brill's deft and engaging writing is a pleasure to read in an age when a well-done literary memoir is a rare find.

    Highly recommended.

        Book Description

Natives who change residence do not settle in the same places as immigrants. Separate Destinations argues that these distinct mobility patterns, coupled with record levels of immigration from impoverished third world nations, are balkanizing the American electorate. James G. Gimpel examines the consequences of different patterns of movement and settlement on the politics of the communities in which these different groups settle.
Newer immigrants are con-strained by a lack of education, money, English literacy, and information--and frequently by discrimination--to live in areas of coethnic settlement. Domestic, native-born migrants--predominantly Caucasian--free of discrimination and possessing more money and information, move where they wish, often to communities where immigrants are not welcome or cannot afford to live. Strong evidence suggests that spatially isolated immigrants are slower to naturalize and get involved in politics than domestic migrants.
Gimpel looks closely at states with very different patterns of migration and immigration: California, Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Florida, Pennsylvania, and New York. In these states, Gimpel shows the impact of population mobility on party registration, party votes, and voter turnout and asks whether population changes have changed the dominant party in a state or produced a political reaction from natives.
Separate Destinations contains a number of thematic maps detailing the settlement patterns of internal migrants and immigrants for both counties and census tracts. Blending insights from a number of social science disciplines, including economics, demography, sociology, political science, and anthropology, this book will be of interest to a wide and diverse readership of scholars, students, and policymakers.
James G. Gimpel is Associate Professor of Government, University of Maryland.
