Book Description
Of all the men who rode with Billy the Kid, one of the least well-know is Henry Newton Brown. Brown broke with Billy the Kid and for a time served as an assistant marshal of Tascaso, Texas. Restless and looking for a better life, Brown ended up in Caldwell, Kansas in where he became an assistant marshal and eventually, after Bat Carr was fired, he became the marshal, of the cowtown known as the Border Queen.
Sure that his past had been safely left in New Mexico, he began to settle-in as a respected citizen of Caldwell. He was honored with the gift of an engraved Winchester as a token of the town's appreciation. A short time later, he married a local school teacher, purchased a house, and then his past caught up with him and he discovered that life is full of choices, and always with a "passel of consequences."

Billy the Kid's Buddy.......2005-09-09
Little factual evidence is known about Henry Newton Brown. He first gained notoriety as one of the Regulators, a gang of hired ruffians that comprised one side of New Mexico's Lincoln County War in the late 1870s. In this capacity he made the acquaintance of one Henry McCarty, aka Kid Antrim, aka William H. Bonney, aka Billy the Kid. After splitting from the Kid and his gang, he worked his way to respectability as marshal of a small albeit violent cowtown, Caldwell, Kansas (still very small today, though decidedly less violent). For reasons still unknown, he reverted to the dark side and attempted to rob a bank in nearby Medicine Lodge, killing two men in the process, then perishing at the hands of an angry mob.
Similar to Wyatt Earp and others, Brown typified a distinct, classic character of the Old West: the "good bad man." He seemed to constantly hover on both sides of the law. Troy Boucher has taken the few facts known about Brown and cemented them together with lots of Zane Grey-inspired fiction. As I feared as soon as I saw the title, he fell victim to character idolatry, removing most of the "bad" from his protagonist and rendering him a stock Western hero who's fallen victim to circumstances beyond his control. How a previous reviewer could compare this chunk of beef jerky to Steinbeck and Twain is beyond me.
Boucher's descriptive passages are skillful. His sentences are crisp and vivid, and he wisely kept his chapters short. But the dialogue is banal, his characters are primarily stereotypes, and his story slams shut as soon as Brown is killed. I'm grateful that Mr. Boucher took on Henry Newton Brown, one of the wild West's more elusive and enigmatic figures. I just wish he hadn't sugar-coated Brown quite so much, and in this case, the truth of Henry Brown is far stranger and more fascinating than Boucher's fiction.
A Clever Book........2002-06-06
I usually don't like westerns, but maybe that's why I liked this book so much. Because unlike most other genre novels, this one isn't about trappings, it's about people and characters and real storytelling. I won't bore you with all the details but I do think Mr Boucher does a neat job mixing fact (the real Henry Brown) with fiction, giving what might otherwise be just another Zane Grey pastiche some dimension and real heart. The Amazon synopsis does a pretty good job laying out the basic storyline, so let me just say that if you want a good read with some intelligence, you should give this book a try.
An Absolute Gem.......2002-06-01
A beautiful and often touching narrative from a talented Kansas writer. Boucher's compelling story is written with a strong love and honest respect for the historical characters that once traversed the Old West. The gritty prose, always rich and well-paced, is equally poetic and terse. Throughout this narrative, Boucher successfully manages to combine a few subtle elements of Hamlet with the rugged landscape of the western genre while staying true to the life of Henry Brown. The novel, dealing with the beginning of the "civilized" west, is extremely thought-provoking and offers the reader strong evocations of place, atmosphere and multi-dimensional characters. The true beauty of this novel is that it is not only for fans of western fiction. This novel is a MUST for a fan of any kind of fiction. Do not dismiss this narrative as mere genre writing. Fans of Steinbeck, Twain, McMurtry, and James Lee Burke will not be disappointed. Don't let this one pass you by. It is essential reading about the human condition...for any century.

The Indian tribes of the upper Missoury in 1833-34.......2002-02-11
An English edition of the german Prince Maximilian's jounal about his upper Missoury expedition in 1833-34.The journal and the beautiful watercolors by Karl Bodmer, are an invaluable ethnografic source on the life and customs of the upper Missoury indians and the fur trade era.The esteems of this edition are that it includes almost all the original watercolors realized by Bodmer during the expedition, and extracs from the original Maximilian journal that were not published in the original edition. On the other hand the heavy editorial crops makes "People of the First Man" not enough for the serious scolar.
