Finale to Legend of Sam Keaton.......2005-03-19
In the murder mysteries of Sam Keaton of Laramie, once again there is a murder and no suspect. In the shadow of the slaughter of Custer and his troop at Little Big Horn, Marshal Keaton wants to know why 2 Texas Rangers are asking about a dead man, why a wealth widow woman has come to town and why someone wants the Marshal dead. In this saga, Keaton travels to Pennsylvania to find the pieces of this puzzle. He is beaten, nearly drowned in whiskey by his abductor, rescued from a stampede, shot at all the while avoiding the seduction of the wealthy widow, and pining for his love, Rebecca, who is with the Sioux. Finally, Sam learns some answers from a elderly lady at an orphanage and is able to pin the murder of a man in Lamarie to the twin brother. But the lawyer and the widow woman were not innocent. Many people were murdered who got in the way. The widow asked the Marshal why he did not fear death. His reply," Death is the end of a long journey. Home. To God. If death has a reason, life has a reason. There is strength in knowing both. And when you think of passing through the curtain into eternity beyond, it puts life into perspective."
The Marshal is glad to put this case behind him and return to Laramie. There he learns that Rebecca had been looking for him. He leaves immediately to find her never to let her go again.
This is a must read book for the conclusion to the previous books in this series. I am facinated the way the author is able to weave such mystery and action together in this western series.
Charming and Entertaining.......2002-10-04
What can I say? Samuel Keaton has taken my breath away in every one of his fast paced, heart pounding, and oddly funny adventures. And " Thunder Voice" is no exception.
The last of four books, I felt that this one was the slower one of the others. Less brawn and more brain is what this small town marshall needed in his search for renegade Texas Rangers, the murderer of an old drunk, and if a wealthy widow's sister was murdered or commited suicide.
It also left the reader wondering if this extremely loveable character would fin love with the Right widow.
An amazing conclusion.......2001-07-18
It's been a year since the events of Sun Dance, the last book in this fine series. Samuel Keaton has stayed off the bottle and tried to get on with his life, but it hasn't been easy. But then two Texas Rangers show up looking for a man brutally murdered in January. Instead of answering Sam's questions, they try to kill him. A beautiful woman also shows up, claiming a connection between the dead man and the death of her sister. Hardly trusting her, Sam follows the trail to Pennsylvania, where his life is in danger around every turn. Can he stay alive long enough to sort through all the clues and reach the right conclusion?
This book had me hooked from the moment I picked it up. Every time you get one answer, it leaves you with more questions. Sam, his friends, and their world are so realistic, that it draws you right in. I must disagree with the previous reviewer because I didn't feel the ending was rushed at all but reached a logical and fulfilling conclusion. And the epilogue tying up Sam's personal life left me smiling for hours.
This series is must reading. I plan on rereading these books many times over the years to come.
A satisfactory conclusion to a great series.......2000-01-28
To start out on my soapbox, I would like to say that whoever wrote the summary on the back of this book should be shot. They should be shot after they are forced to actually read the book. The back has nothing to do with the book.
Okay, got that out of the way.
This was another Ghost Rider romp from Sigmund Brouwer's fine pen. The western aspects again were excellent and historically accurate. The mystery was good, although easier to figure out as a reader than the previous Ghost Rider books. I did like the fact that Sam gets out of Wyoming and heads to a different state to uncover another mystery and more attempts on his life.
I cannot say too much without giving away the entire plot. So I won't. I will add my one criticism of this book: Brouwer wraps this one up much too quickly. It seems that he ran out of space in the book and had to quit with the whole thing in 10 pages. Quick! Explain the mystery, sort out the characters, get home, and add a happy ending! The ending was too abrupt and too unsatisfactory.
So, all together, this was a good book of a great series. I recommend the entire Ghost Rider series.

Glorious and Tragic Struggles for Equality.......2000-08-10
Most books and reports on Civil War events come from white writers and voice white viewpoints. This one speaks with a black voice, as George E. Stephens wrote as correspondent for the (New York) "Weekly Anglo-African," from the events of John Brown's rebellion (Nov. 1859) through September, 1864. Along the way he shifted from member of the press to acting patriot-soldier, recruiting and then enlisting in the Massachusetts 54th, that leader among black regiments depicted in the movie "Glory." Donald Yacovone provides not only notes for the letters but also information on Stephens' family background. After the 54th disbanded Yacovone follows Stephens' ongoing struggles to educate freed slaves in Virginia; the story of many black patriots' efforts to move their people upward by finally granting them some education is not widely told or appreciated. These chapters fill a need today. So the life taken as a whole is both glorious and tragic: it's distressing to follow Stephens' hopes, from fresh optimism through disillusionment to despair, time and time again from the events of Fort Wagner to the last anguished efforts of his life. At its end he had to sue the government he'd served all his life to obtain the commission denied to him because of his race (though illegally), and provide for his wife with a higher pension. He never lived to receive it, dying in 1888 before the promotion came through. In this Stephens is typical of black men of his time, and it's deeply saddening. This is not a happy, but it is a useful, book, and a corrective for many cheap heroics about how well we treated our black veterans. We need to ponder its message today.
