Not Just for Youth.......2007-02-22
Excellent study bible for beginners, not just youth. Great explanation with historical background information. A must have for every family.
Beginning........2006-11-07
The Catholic Youth Bible is a tremendous resource for anyone who wishes to study the bible. Catholics, especially, tend not to read it, but to accept interpretations made by their priests. But I know a group of several non-Catholic ministers & Catholic lay people who read this book every week--admitting that they're not where they should be in their study of this masterpiece. For that introduction to a life-long study, you can do no better than this beautiful little book.
Sincerely, Dr. Frank Braio
The Catholic Youth Bible.......2006-11-06
This book was in tip top condition for the price paid. I highly recommend ordering this product. The mailing time was excellent, less than a week. I look forward to future orders.
just what we needed.......2006-11-03
My daughter's school required the students to have their own study bible, and this is just what we needed.
Wonderful tool for faithful living.......2005-10-25
I bought this for my daughter and use it even more than she does. This is a wonderful Catholic interpretation of the Bible and does a great job of explaining Catholic beliefs and traditions in relation to Scripture. It has all 73 books, so it's a complete Catholic Bible.
Some of the special features I like most include "Live It!" giving the reader practical applications drawn from real life and "Pray It!" encouraging the use of the Bible for personal prayer. Lots of study aids help place the teachings in context.
The Catholic religion hasn't changed in over 2,000 years, yet this bible makes it accessible to today's believers. I recommend it for anyone interested in a little extra help when exploring Scripture.

Great Prayers For Ecumenical Services.......2007-06-02
I have found this book to be of great value in my Ecumenical relations with other faiths.
I have also found for myself a deep spiritual renewal in reading this book.
I recommend this Book of Common Prayer to all that value the wisdom within other faiths.
Very Good!.......2007-05-14
Well, I can't rate the BCP anything but positive. My only concern was I failed to read the size of the book and it was smaller then I would have liked, the pages are thin, but at the same time feel very "strong." It has the Daily Office and the complete Psalter. If only I had read the dimensions, I am sure I would have opted for a larger addition. If you don't have problems with smaller print, then by all means purchase this copy, you can't be the price. Also the binding it very good, the book while small, lays flat, whch is a really nice in a hardcover book of this size.
Review of BCP.......2007-03-25
I was pleased with this book, as well as for the speed of delivery. Thanks.
the other good book.......2007-03-24
This book was so good, I used it in my wedding!
Book of Uncommon prayer.......2007-03-23
A wonderful size to tuck in a backpack or purse, I love the language of the liturgy and the realm of spiritual union they create between the reader and God. Nicely bound, delicate paper.

Product Description
What happens when an affable parish priest is confronted by a pair of curious second graders who want to help him solve the Mystery of the Eucharist? Why, he turns it into a teaching opportunity for the entire First Communion class. The book is a wonderful combination of storybook, reference book, and keepsake book. The storybook section mixes a bit of 'who-done-it' drama with traditional religious education to uncover the mystery of faith. Father Hugo challenges the children to look throughout the church for clues to solve the Mystery. Then he and the parish staff together explain how the things they find, the prayers they say, and the music they sing all relate to Jesus Christ and the Eucharist. The reference section of the book contains a rendering of 'our church' that identifies the sacramentals and other items the children find. It also includes information children should know when making their First Communion. The last section of the book allows the First Communicant and his or her family to record the events of this special day, making it a lasting keepsake.

Super informative memory book!.......2007-05-13
I bought this book for my daughter's First Communion. I also bought 4 other copies to give to my niece and some of my daughter's friends who were also making their First Communion. My daughter and I have filled out the back memory section which is such a nice reminder of her special day. There is room for comments, feelings and pictures and mementos. I began reading the story to my daughter, but haven't finished it. She enjoyed looking at the map of the church and discussing it. The only reason I'm giving this book 4 stars instead of 5, is because the story didn't keep my daughter's interest. However, I believe this is because we have really discussed all aspects of the sacrament before Holy Communion. The children in the story are searching for the mystery of the Eucharest. My daughter already understood the mystery. This would be a great book for preparation and then used as a memory book.
My 1st Communion.......2007-05-08
Great! My niece loved this Book and couldn't put it down the entire day. We wrote in it together the day before and then on the day of she read it with other girls her age at her party. It will be a great memory for us to share in years to come!
Wonderful resource.......2007-02-12
I bought this book as a gift for my daughter's birthday so she would have it before she made her First Communion. We read one or two chapters a week as a review of her CCD program (to ensure we covered any gaps). She enjoyed the story and loved filling in the memory pages at the back of the book. What a wonderful Catholic resource! Highly recommended. Also consider getting the companion book Today I Made My First Reconciliation.
simply wonderful.......2003-09-26
This book is a must read not only for children who are about to make their First Communion, but for the parents of the children as well. It's an easy to read book that takes you step by step through the process of this special day in their lives. Children will love it not only for the writing, but for the beautiful illustrations. Parents will love it because it's a wonderful refresher course as they recall their own First Communion.
Mom in San Diego.......2003-05-10
My daughter received this book for her First Communion. We just finished reading it together and I don't know who learned more. The story kept us both entertained. She could identify with the children in the story and loved the 'mystery' aspect. The explanation of things found in the church and the Mass, though detailed, are kid-friendly. I just love everythning about this book and highly recommend it.

Book Description
Did rebel angels take on human bodies to fulfill their lust for the "daughters of men"? Did these fallen angels teach men to build weapons of war?
That is the premise of the Book of Enoch, a text cherished by the Essenes, early Jews and Christians but later condemned by both rabbis and Church Fathers. The book was denounced, banned and "lost" for over a thousand years-until in 1773, a Scottish explorer discovered three copies in Ethiopia.
Elizabeth Clare Prophet examines the controversy surrounding this book and sheds new light on Enoch's forbidden mysteries. She demonstrates that Jesus and the apostles studied the Book of Enoch and tells why Church Fathers suppressed its teaching that angels could incarnate in human bodies. Contains all the Enoch texts, including the Book of Enoch, and biblical parallels.
Fallen Angels and the Origins of Evil takes you back to the primordial drama of Good and Evil, when the first hint of corruption entered a pristine world-earth.
Contains Richard Laurence's translation of the Book of Enoch, all the other Enoch texts, including the Book of the Secrets of Enoch, biblical parallels

Fallen Angels & the orgins of evil.......2007-03-09
I could learn all ahe had to say by just re-visiting the Bible. Nothing new or thought prevoking in this book
A decent introduction to 1 Enoch, but disappointing overall.......2007-02-13
I decided to give this book two stars because it offers a basic introduction to 1 Enoch and similar texts; it is also a cheap alternative for people wanting to read the apocryphal text without spending a great deal of money. However, I found the book to be quite disappointing and I can't consider it to be recommended reading. The majority of the book is nothing but Richard Laurence's translation of 1 Enoch and other related texts (such as The Book of Jubilees), so Prophet herself does not really offer any major content or insight. On a positive note, Prophet does provide some useful cross-references, footnotes, and chapters detailing parallels between Enoch and the Biblical texts (otherwise I would have given this 1 star). However, some of these are better than others, so readers should be careful when evaluating whether or not the parallels actually exist or if they are imposed upon the texts by the author.
I also disagree with most of Prophet's theories regarding the Watchers, the Nephilim, and the ongoing (perceived) struggle of good versus evil. I'm being somewhat kind to say that she's doing nothing more than offering "speculation" because there is really no support (archaeologically, scientifically, or even scripturally) to demonstrate concrete evidence of her ideas. For instance, she writes that human beings have continually been demonically possessed by evil fallen angels to carry out their dirty work and to aid in the ultimate destruction of humankind. While I'm sure that some people might find this argument believable, I find it very unconvincing and completely dependent upon adherence to superstitious beliefs. I consider it especially ridiculous when she tries to argue that this is happening even in our current day with political leaders and other important figures. In such cases, Prophet is using this lack of evidence to play right into the superstitious beliefs of some people who will therefore "see" events as she wants, and be willing to play along. She also promotes the "Sons of Seth" and "Daughters of Cain" argument, which I find erroneous, albeit she uses a modified version of this view (the demonic possession aspect) to suit her theories. Additionally, I do not care for much of Prophet's New Age "fluff" that she sprinkles into the texts. Once again, she uses such material to appeal to certain kinds of readers so that it looks like she's giving them legitimate information, but it really has no substance.
If you are just getting into this material, then you might enjoy this book. However, if you spend any amount of time researching such topics than you will see how little it has to offer and you will be wanting much more thoroughly researched material. I recommend that you spend some time reading over the other reviews posted here to get a better understanding of the pitfalls of this book and where else to look for more information.
I was somewhat dissapointed, but it is has some good qualities.......2007-02-09
The book seemed kinda "weird" to me, but it does have its value. I especially like the comparison chart which compares passages from the Bible with prophecies of Enoch.
I suggest that you (and everyone) get a copy of "Restoring the Biblical Christ: Is Jesus God?" The amount of insights in that book is mind-boggling, yet easily grasped.
Dr King.......2007-01-25
Fallen Angels is nothing but a preface to the Book of Enoch. Just buy the Book of Enoch and save the money, except if you like non-fiction.
Not necessary if you buy the book of enoch.......2007-01-13
This book is basically a commentary with the book of enoch after it. It's better to just by the book of enoch by itself.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.
Customer Reviews:
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02
Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.
pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16
Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.

Confronting Blind Faith.......2006-11-20
This book is not for the faint of heart, religiously speaking. This is not a book for those who are reluctant to read with an open mind. It is not a book for those who do not want to challenge their own beliefs and religious viewpoints. It is, however, a book for those who want and need to understand the reality of religious teachings. It is a book for those who are not afraid to consider freethought, that is, reaching conclusions based on evidence and common sense, rather than dogma.
That being said, this book is a mindblower. It is a collection of essays by world renowned historians, researchers and theologians, who present the reader with a truck load of propositions against the existence of God.
Such propositions are enough to set off uncontrollable anger because most people have been taught to believe in some form of God, despite any hard evidence. Our religious beliefs are based on Bible stories, myth and dogma, not on scientific evidence.
This book is a hard hitting, sometimes disturbing, yet logical and scientific presentation of facts against the existence of a God. It is organized into sections on specific topics, such as the Origins of Religion, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Bible, Jesus, and Doctrine, to name a few.
The intent of the book is to show the reader the obvious, and compelling weak points of religious doctrine and dogma.
Consider the fact that Christians around the world celebrate Christmas on Dec 25th, the date they believe is the birth date of Jesus Christ. In reality, this date was the Roman celebration of the winter solstice. There is no evidence that Christ was born on this date, or even close to it. Along with this, St. Francis of Assisi is credited with the creation of the first Nativity scene in 1223. He invented this scene as a teaching tool. In other words, the Nativity scene is not based on fact, but is simply a human invention to illustrate a point of view.
The above is a mild example of what the reader will find in this book. Most of the examples are far more provocative. Take, for instance, the fact that Jesus Christ was not the only Messiah to live on earth. There are about fifty-one such Messiahs who were all born of virgins, came to earth to save mankind, were crucified and then rose from the dead. The Egyptian God, Horus, lived on earth and said and did all the things that Jesus said and did. The life of Horus, however, was recorded 1000 years before the birth of Christ.
This book is a tough read in the sense that it challenges the reader to think for himself. It forces the reader to look at facts long repressed by religious leaders. It encourages the reader to consider scientific facts that fly in the face of blind faith. Myths, half truths and convoluted dogma are tossed out the window in this provocative book.
The reader may go away from this book without any major change in personal beliefs. Religious beliefs, after all, are deeply ingrained. But at the very least, the reader will be encouraged to think and reason, even if only for the length of time it takes to read this book. That alone, is no small matter.
Good Information Thrown Together.......2006-09-14
This book may be a good introduction to freethinking for those curious enough to pick it up. The book suffers from a poor presentation that makes it seem disorganized and comic-bookish. The truth is it is not all that bad, but the reader needs to approach it understnding that all this book does is introduce you to the issues. If someone reads this book and becomes interested in following the trail of one of the many authors introduced, well then the book has done its job, I think. That appears to be the purpose. I like this book and would recommend it to teenagers or those who have blindly accepted received wisdom all their lives and who are now ready to explore for themselves. Is it a threat to faith?--- yes it is. It encourages free-thinking in the purest sense, and any and all freethinking threatens religious dogmatism and priestcraft. The title is therefore appropriate; this book has a value of its own in that it may reach and help many people who are grasping for the truth, who are fed up with groveling before a fairy tale.
Not worth it.......2006-08-17
I read many historical and theological books. This book lacks organization and it lacks any academic references. The vast majority of historical and/or theological books include bibliographies and footnotes or endnotes. This book had none of these. Further, as the book is an accumulation of essays and excerpts from many other sources, I would expect a bit of an explanation for each of the authors - especially the more obscure ones.
Now, that being said, I do agree with much of what this book purports, and have read other books that touch on many of the items addressed by this book. However, I think this book is incomplete, and is not representative of the genre nor does it live up to its title.

Book Description
There is a war going on for the future of our country. Most people know that. What they may not know is that if Christians lose, the result won't merely be enduring public policy we disagree with - it will be a prison sentence for those who oppose it. We've all seen the attack coming. First the Supreme Court said kids can't pray in school. Then the Ten Commandments were ripped from the classrooms. Now pastors are being removed from their pulpits and put in jail for speaking out against homosexuality (Sweden). And things are only getting worse. How in the world did we get to this place? And why is it that Christians are singled out in this assault on morality? Serving as a wake-up call for America, this book will expose the truth that Christianity is being criminalized - and that we must stand up against it now .

Essential Reading.......2007-05-12
Christians get out of your Bible bunkers. These people mean business and if you don't stand up for The Word, you'll fall down to the lies.
Truth overdue.......2006-11-08
Immediatley the reader is struck with the straight foward manner the facts are presented. It is one thing to think the things presented in this treatise, it is quite another to back them up with research and hands-on experience. I tire of hyperbole and twisted tales design to postulate a personal agenda. That is why I read Criminalization of Christianity. It did not resort to manipulation of emotions to sell books. It did not lash out at any undeserving faction. It did not resort to bigotry or hatred. Instead the book lays out stunning reality that should make us stand up and shout it out - I have had enough!
Thanks to a courageous Janet Folger we can join together and fight the good fight.
To Arms! Wake up, Christendom!.......2006-09-19
Thank God for people like Janet Folger, David Kupelian (Author of "The Marketing of Evil") and others, who use their pens as clarion calls to those of us who love God, our country and our right to religious freedom...FOR NOW!
We must either wake up and take action, or accept the fact that, by remaining silent, we assist those who pave the way straight to Hell using stones of Political Correctness.
Christians, wake up!.......2006-07-19
Wow! I had no idea how serious it is that we are losing religious freedoms left and right and are remaining silent. Janet Folger cites case upon case of instances when Christians were discriminated against and even forced to choose between ceasing to exist as a business or supporting the homosexual agenda.
Right now it's abortion and the homosexual agenda that are causing Chrisians to lose their freedoms. But if we don't stand up and fight, it won't be long before sharing the gospel or even owing a Bible might land us in jail.
I highly recommend this book for individuals but especially for churches and group studies. I think it would have been nice if the author had included group discussion questions for each chapter, but you can still use the book in a weekly Bible study, discussing a chapter per week and determining what your church or group is going to do to fight the criminalization of Christianity. A lot of research went into this book, and it reads well--not like a law textbook. Many thanks to the author for writing it!

More than a prayer book, Celtic Daily Prayer is a gift from the Northumbria Community of northeastern England. This devout religious community, with members scattered around the world, is joined together by the teachings of traditional Celtic Christianity dating back to the sixth century. In assembling this collection of prayers, they offer Christians ancient Celtic devotional writing as well as contemporary sources of wisdom, such as Anne Morrow Lindbergh, T.S. Eliot, and even Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul, and Mary. The focal point for this prayer book is the daily office, although the book also includes additional meditations and daily readings. It offers two complete years of reading, so it should last a while (the publisher also promises follow-up books). Although many of these prayers come from the ancient monastic tradition, they easily speak to Christians contending with everyday things like jobs, childcare, dinners, and house cleaning. In his introduction Richard J. Foster (Celebration of Discipline) claims that this prayer book is most often found "in kitchens with bread baking and tea brewing or in living rooms crammed full of that cozy lived-in feel." --Gail Hudson
Book Description
The Ancient Paths of Northumbria in northeastern England have been trod by generations of men and women who loved God and followed Jesus, bringing faith, hope, and love to vast numbers of people. Today, the Northumbria Community remains a living expression of this monastic, contemplative stream of the faith, and the perennial need to make that faith relevant to the world.
Celtic Daily Prayer is the fruit of the spiritual life of a remarkable community. Its liturgies, prayers, and meditations are drawn from a deep well of spiritual experience that transcends fashion, culture, and denomination. Blending prayer and praise and building upon the ancient wisdom of traditional Celtic Christianity, this prayer book is extraordinarily fresh. At the heart of the life of the Northumbria Community, as well as this book, lies the Daily Office -- morning, noon, and evening prayers and a monthly cycle of meditations for individual or communal use each day. With words drawn from sources such as St. Patrick's Breastplate, Teresa's Bookmark, Columba's Blessing, and the Psalms, this cycle of daily prayers reflects the essential rhythms of life.
With liturgies for communion and other special occasions as well as daffy readings, this prayer book contains two complete years of scripture readings and a calendar of saints' days and festivals. The Jewish tradition of family Shabbat, adapted with prayers from the Celtic tradition, also finds its place in this book. A section on rites of passage suggests prayers and rituals for the pivotal times of life: birth, rebirth, marriage, midlife, and bereavement, as well as blessings and graces for all occasions. This traditionally grounded yet surprisingly modem prayer book will enrich the spiritual life of readers for years to come.

Essence of Celtic Daily Prayer.......2007-04-02
This book is well-arranged into familiar offices, seasons, and liturgies.
The translation is true to the Celtic flavor. I use it often!
Deeper insights, poetry and prayer.......2006-12-10
I have owned this book of prayer for eight years. I return to it again and again for new insights and fresh visions. I shared some of the prayers with a youth group, and it spoke as deeply to them as it did to me. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a fresh look at prayers and understandings of the Christian faith. Marla Christine
A refreshing guide to prayer.......2006-12-08
I have been using Celtic Daily Prayer for almost two years and it continues to amaze me. The combination of familiar repetition and inspirational readings in each day's prayer cycle provides those who "keep the hours" with fresh perspectives in prayer. The daily office was not my tradition until about two years ago, and while I own several traditional prayer books, I am continually drawn to Celtic Daily Prayer as my main guide to the rhythm of daily prayer. For those from a non-Catholic tradition, Celtic Daily Prayer offers a nice transition from the Protestant "devotional time" to the ancient practice of the daily office.
A Fresh Perspective.......2006-07-08
Wonderful readings and short daily services. Will take you through two year long cycles of daily prayer and introduce you to some wonderful Celtic saints and writers.
A Nice Resource.......2006-06-30
I first stumbled across this book in the local Barnes & Noble, where I sat and perused it, becoming more and more drawn to the liturgies and readings. When I arrived home, I immediately logged on to Amazon.com and put it on my Wish List. One of my friends gave it to me the following Christmas.
The section of the book I use most often is the Daily Office, which can also be found online at the Northumbria Community's web site. The services are short and and designed to be said in community. I introduced my Education for Ministry (EFM) group to the Complines, and they have become a regular part of our worship together.
I also use the "Follow the Example" section of the book when planning liturgies for small groups and retreats. Here you will find a list of Saints and Holy Days with brief biographies and references to the other sections of the book for suggested scripture readings. The Saints range from the ancient and traditional, primarily Celtic, to 20th century figures such as Diterich Bonhoffer, Oscar Romero and Thomas Merton. Nine longer liturgies and reflections based on the lives of specific Saints like Brigid, Brendan and Hild.
The book also contains a series of 31 Daily meditations, a Holy Communion service, a Family Shabbat, Rites of Passage, brief seasonal liturgies, and two series of Daily readings for the year.
A definite must for those interested in Celtic Christianity and Spirituality.

Great Book.......2007-06-08
Learning to change a view that is wrong is the first step in healing. This book gives people the opportunity to change the course of their life and focus on what they are designed to do in life.
Spiritually Awakening.......2007-05-30
The Supernatural Ways of Roayalty is a book that can truly open one's Spirit to the realm of thinking above the normalacy of the daily Christian's walk in life. When reading this book, if one were to allow God to heal the wounds of the past, and renew a right Spirit within, this book can help pave the way to knowing who you are in Christ and allowing you to truly live the life intended as a Christian. Truly, we as children of the King should prevail to walk as such. Great teaching in the book and wonderful insight given to both authors to release God's love to the reader.
life changing.......2007-05-26
Great book, great author, God's awesome! Who are you in Christ? What authority do you have in this world? Are you who you're supposed to be? get this book now!
Necessary Reading.......2007-04-10
Kris Vallotton wrote everything in here except for two chapters. Sometimes it is difficult for me to listen to Kris, but it was quite easy to go through his book. It flows quite nicely. This book really made me see myself more as God sees me -- the way I really am. I truly am a high priest and a king in God's kingdom. I am seeing more and more that, as I am not to put any boundries on what God will or will not do, neither should I put limits on what God will do in and through me! This is truly a book that will launch you into your God-given potential.
kind of dull.......2007-02-18
you know, i must be truthful. i found this book to be somewhat obvious in content, and really rather flat. so much so that i could not even bring myself to finish it. i had previously read 2 of bill johnson's books and wanted to keep the exciting flow happening, but this book just didn't do it for me. i know that we are royalty, but where was the "outside the box," radical thinking that bill johnson offered?
glad to see that others loved the book. either i missed something in trying to read it, or it was just never there IMHO.

Book Description
The early Christian Church was a chaos of contending beliefs. Some groups of Christians claimed that there was not one God but two or twelve or thirty. Some believed that the world had not been created by God but by a lesser, ignorant deity. Certain sects maintained that Jesus was human but not divine, while others said he was divine but not human. In Lost Christianities, Bart D. Ehrman offers a fascinating look at these early forms of Christianity and shows how they came to be suppressed, reformed, or forgotten. All of these groups insisted that they upheld the teachings of Jesus and his apostles, and they all possessed writings that bore out their claims, books reputedly produced by Jesus's own followers. Modern archaeological work has recovered a number of key texts, and as Ehrman shows, these spectacular discoveries reveal religious diversity that says much about the ways in which history gets written by the winners. Ehrman's discussion ranges from considerations of various "lost scriptures"--including forged gospels supposedly written by Simon Peter, Jesus's closest disciple, and Judas Thomas, Jesus's alleged twin brother--to the disparate beliefs of such groups as the Jewish-Christian Ebionites, the anti-Jewish Marcionites, and various "Gnostic" sects. Ehrman examines in depth the battles that raged between "proto-orthodox Christians"-- those who eventually compiled the canonical books of the New Testament and standardized Christian belief--and the groups they denounced as heretics and ultimately overcame. Scrupulously researched and lucidly written, Lost Christianities is an eye-opening account of politics, power, and the clash of ideas among Christians in the decades before one group came to see its views prevail.

Religious reading.......2007-06-27
Considering its subject matter I feel 5 stars is worthy. It is written by a scholar in palin English and an almost conversational style. For folks interested in Christian scripture of all types and why we have the New Testament we have today, I feel this is a must read. Tho the book can be considered a text book it will be as comfortable on one's nightstand as in a contemporary class on religious studies. An excellent book for a study group.
An open minded review..........2007-06-27
Professor Ehrman is a learned and lucid writer. If you want to know what the best minds in Chiristian History have found out this is a good book for you. Dr. Ehrman writes in a easy to read manner and handles the subject matter in a matter-of-fact way. His ease with this material makes this book a must for those who want to know the history of the faith. Readers should bring an open mind to allow for acceptance of an alternative view of events in the early days of the church.
Juxtaposing Texts & Turning Down Textual Criticism.......2007-05-21
"When you have learnt by heart all your books by Basilides, Manes, Barbelos and Leusiboras, go sing them in the weaving women's workshops, or offer to read them to the unlearned in the taverns that you frequent;" (Jerome, Liber contra Vigilantium)
Prologue to A Review:
Gnostics questioned that Jesus really died on a cross, they believed Jesus separated his Divine Person from his physical body at crucifixion. Irenaeus, a second-century church father wrote that the Gnostic teacher Basilides, who was active in Alexandria early second century, has pictured the spiritual Jesus as laughing at the folly of his persecutors after he transformed Simon of Cyrene to look like the earthly Jesus.
Two years before Robinson released the Nag Hammadi Library, John Dart wrote his amazing account of the discovery, and its codices. In the 'The Laughing Savior' he mentioned that in specific Nag Hammadi texts Jesus was portrayed laughing, unseen from above, at the ignorance of those pounding nails into his hands on the cross. What I have earlier discovered was the Gnostic origins of many suras in the Quran which portrayed Jesus miracles of childhood, now, I added a more serious issue, the Gnostic portrayal that Jesus was not crossified, only his body!
It was the summer of 1991, when I called the eminent Harvard professor Helmut Koester, from Evanston, Ill., and left him a message inquiring about any research on the relation of the 'Laughing Savior' to the Quranic recitation on Jesus never crossified, and the Gnostic Origins of it. He shortly after, called back and gave me a title of a book he has just reviewed, Christ in Islam and Christianity by Neal Robinson (July 1991), which was the sole book that explored my query, why did the savior laugh?, or, what Robinson calls "Shubeha Lahum'.
Why did I limit myself in such inquiry with very busy scholars like Dr. Koester? It was his authority, the integrity and unparalleled scholarship in the field of Ancient Gospels.
Religious Literacy:
"How is it that the United States is one of the most religious places on earth but most Americans don't know anything about their own religions, much less the religions of others? I try to answer this question historically, looking back to earlier times when learning to read and learning about religion went hand in hand." enquires Dr. Stephen Prothero, a historian of American religion.
Peter Steinfels wrote in his 'Beliefs' column in the "New York Times," May 12, 2007, under the heading, 'At Commencement, a Call for Religious Literacy', "In today's world it is irresponsible to use the word 'educated' to describe high school or college graduates who are ignorant of the ancient stories that continue to motivate the beliefs and behaviors of the overwhelming majority of the world's population." Earlier, on April 2, 2007, Time Magazine's cover story, by religion writer David Van Biema attempted to explain, "Why We Should Teach the Bible in Public Schools 'But Very, Very Carefully.' "
Coptic Gnostic Literature:
The attention focused on Gnosticism by fiction writers, is thrilling to the lay, but it is also true that increased attention on academics tends to be predominately positive. As a Coptic admirer, I welcome those first-timers or renewed interest 'Truth seekers'. At least the genuine first-timers to Gnosticism are not pursuing facts in the oh-so-popular legends of the Holy Grail, Bloodline of Christ, (The Da Vinci Code), Mary Magdalene, and the like!.
James M. Robinson's 'The Nag Hammadi Library in English', has been around for three decades and is a complete Coptic Gnostic source (GQ), introducing all of Nag Hammadi Codices translatred, by many outstanding scholars. Marvin Meyers, one of the GQ translators wrote, 'The Secret Teachings of Jesus' comparing four Gnostic Gospels is a re-translation without commentary on The 'Book of James, Gospel of Thomas, Book of Thomas & The Secret Book of John.' Elaine Pagels three books (The Gnostic Gospels, The Gnostic Paul, and Beyond Belief: The Secret Gospel of Thomas) have received considerable attention recently. (Quoted from J. Philoponus, Gnostic to the bones)
The Gnostic Gospels:
A remarkable number of ancient gospels not in the NT Canon (included in the New Testament) have been recovered during the past century. In evaluating these gospels, scholars have come to an astonishingly diverse set of conclusions about when they were written. Some scholars have assigned many of the newly recovered gospels to the first century of the Christian movement. Others, confirmed ancient Church traditions, concluding that virtually all of these gospels were written during the middle or late second century. No scholarly consensus regarding the dates of these gospels seems likely anytime in the foreseeable future. Andrew Bernhard (The Secret Gospel of Mark, The Gospel of Peter,...)
Key to Ehrman Success:
Success witnesses remarkably to the work of Bart Ehrman,... Three things contribute especially to his success. One is that Ehrman writes as spiritedly as he thinks. ...Remote history comes alive in entertaining and provocative analogies and contrasts. A good case is the contrasting of ancient religions, which lacked centralized organizations and creedal confessions, with many modern religions. Ehrman's summary of the Gospel of Peter in Lost Christianities is more interesting than reading the Gospel of Peter (and about as long). His account of the Nag Hammadi discoveries reads like Agatha Christie. Equally spellbinding is the narration of Morton Smith's discovery of a reference to the Secret Gospel of Mark ...
A second key to success is that Ehrman has his finger on the pulse of postmodernity. The core contention of his work is that in the early centuries of Christianity "proto-orthodoxy" battled with diverse forms of the religion and won. ... In keeping with this outlook Ehrman calls for valuing wide-ranging varieties of early Christianity and their texts. So he consistently juxtaposes movements and texts that lost battles to become the dominant form of Christianity against a "proto-orthodox" variety that won the battles and whose texts eventually became the New Testament. ... Ehrman's call for valuing diversity in early Christianities comes at a time when something comparable to proto-orthodoxy is calling for a canonical reading of scriptures. Whereas Ehrman colors the battles for canonicity with intrigue and deception, ... A third feature that contributes to his success is the wide range that these books cover without diluting the wealth of information with which they are packed. ...I cannot do justice to even in an essay review. Aside from Helmut Koester's two-volume historical introduction, I know of nothing comparable in range and depth." Robert Brawley, McCormick Th. Seminary
Ehrman Vs. Orthodoxy:
Most of Ehrman's profuse writings is related to various aspects of Walter Bauer's thesis that early Christianity was diversified. Ehrman has pioneered connecting the history of church doctrine to Gnostic codices within biblical manuscripts. In his writings, Ehrman has turned around textual criticism, and has coined such terms as 'Proto-orthodox Christianity'. Ehrman defends that it was more often the 'Orthodox' that did corrupt the texts, not the heretics (like Marcion) who were charged with tampering with the biblical manuscripts. He has authored or contributed to almost two dozen books.
BART EHRMAN THE BEST TEACHER.......2007-05-08
PROFESSOR EHRMAN DOES SUPERB WORK IN WRITING ON THE HISTORY OF THE NEW TESTMANET ERA.
Fascinating! early Christian sects we never knew........2007-04-29
One of my first books concerning gnosticism and early Christian sects that would eventually be dubbed "heresies". Contains an extensive bibliography for further research. Ehrman coins the term "proto-orthodox" to describe the variety of Christianity that won the initial battles over "who was right". Wide breadth and scope, yet the book remains focused. Includes evidence for and against most arguments, such as which works might be pseudonymous or outright forgeries. covers history of official lists of canonical works. covers beliefs and theologies of specific "heresies" including Marcionites, various gnosticisms, ebionites, docetism, adoptionists, and Montanism. Discusses specific new testament works that were never cannonized, ie. "apocryphal". Includes a whole list with approximate dates of non-cannonized scriptures (eg. Epistle of Barnabas, Gospel of Peter, Acts of Thecla, coptic Gospel of Thomas, secret Gsopel of mark). There's about 40 or 50 books that were not included in the bible that were at one time considered sacred.
This was a truly eye opening experience for me. At least 4 stars!
