This book is put in simpler terms than a text book & makes it easier to understand for the novice. Very informative.

This is an excellent book for basic canine genetics and picking a breeding partner as well as other aspects of Breeding for quality show puppies.

5 out of 5 stars The Breeding Bible.......2004-09-20

The absolute best information for breeders on breeding and caring for pups and mom. Written by a legend in dogs and her knowledge is extensive. I would not be without this book ~ I credit it with my being able to save many a pup & avoid many problems.

4 out of 5 stars The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog.......2004-05-23

This book contained 100 pages of manuscript on whelping and breeding and care of neonates by Terri Shumsky. People who can no longer get this book should check out Terri Shumsky's HOW TO BUY AND RAISE A GOOD HEALTHY DOG, which contains all the same information given to Ann Seranne PLUS lots more.
Here's what Boxer Review said about Terri Shumsky's book.
The Book Shelf

How to Buy and Raise a Good Healthy Dog is mostly about breeding and
raising a dog. It contains one chapter on the buying of a dog, one chapter on general
health care (covering about 65 pages) and three appendixes on genetics, food and
nutrition and microchips.

"This is another Doral publication which was written by breeder and judge Terri Shumsky. The illustrations are effective particularly in regard to the birthing process. As a matter of fact, the information given in the "Having Puppies" chapter is exceptional and useful for both the novice and experienced breeder. I think that the information on general health care is quite sufficient for most dog owners. Other books which have been reviewed in this column (The Merck Veterinary Manual,Hands-On Dog Care, The Purina Encyclopedia of Dog Care and the Five Minute Veterinary Ready Reference) are perhaps too extensive for most health questions. Shumsky's book fills a niche of providing just about enough information."

4 out of 5 stars A good place to start if you want to start your own dog wash........2007-05-12

This book provided the author's personal information on how to start up a dog wash, and it provided good info. The only thing I did not like was the book had to be down loaded on line. I like having a hard copy on hand to review.

5 out of 5 stars How To Start Your Own Dog Wash Business.......2007-04-10

This product came nicely packaged and is totally informative and useful. There aren't enough positive things to say. It is all as it was described to be.
Thank you.

1 out of 5 stars Duh !!!.......2007-02-07

Not worth the money. It is my opinion that the useful information in this book could be held on five pages and tends to be very basic in nature (things like, hand out lots of business cards). Even the best advice the book offers could most likely be obtained in an evening on google if you tried. If you can't think of the ideas in this book on your own, then you probably don't need to be running your own business anyhow!!!

That being said, if you are interested in starting a dog wash, you have ZERO business knowledge, and you flat out do not know where to start, then I guess this could be helpful for giving you a point in the right direction ... but that is all it will give you.

1 out of 5 stars This book is all wet.......2005-05-08

No secrets to be found here. All this information can easily be obtained using common sense and doing a bit of research yourself. Most people in the self wash business are happy to briefly chat about their experiences and give you some pointers for free. That being said, I did speak to two owners who both suggested the book, so as puzzling as it is to me, it must have an audience. If you want one stop shopping without researching the subject this will provide you a beginning, but the information is barely worth $10, never mind $39 and none of the finer points of retail are covered.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite training book.......2001-01-24

I purchased this book when I unexpectedly had a new german shorthair puppy to train. I purchased it because it had an extensive section on puppy training and I was anxious to get started. I also soon purchased several other bird dog training books, including some very famous ones, but I kept coming back to Larry Muellers book. I like his attitude toward dogs and his willingness to go against commonly held beliefs and techniques. He is a very obsevant man who incorporates the latest dog psychology into his obsevations. The emphasis is on avoiding mistakes or techniques which cause setbacks and cost you time to correct. This gives you a lot of insight into dogs minds and training in general. Most importantly every technique he recommended WORKED! I cannot say that about any of the other books. Also every thing that he said to avoid that I did not manage to avoid cost me time. He was right. I have repeatedly received compliments on my dogs performance and manners even by pros. The biggest factor in that was this book. This is an excellent book to purchase before acquiring a pup. His puppy training section(2-4months old) is extensive, excellent and effective. He also has techniques for selecting a pup which make a lot of sense.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and informative.......1997-12-31

Larry Mueller offers his unique way of speed training a bird dog, however, I do feel that his techniques are stressing to a dog - especially a sensitive dog or a young dog (say six-months). Larry does offer some excellent ways to train your dog on the basic obedience/hunting commands, but his use of force training goes beyond my personal preference. If you are a first-time trainer, training your own dog, this book is excellent - if you approach training with love and patience. Remember, you are training a friend and companion, not a strickly business hunting dog.

True this book is written by an Englishman.

SO WHAT?

Replace references to 'HM' with 'Federal...'

If the info in the book is not relevant to the US, at least the book has drawn awareness to this aspect, and the correct data can be quickly found on the internet. Thus the book is almost as valuable to an American as it is to a Brit.

If the rest of the world buy hundreds of thousands of books written for an American market, surely America can do the equivalent?

1 out of 5 stars (American) Buyer Beware.......2005-03-15

This book is of limited value to American kennel owners. Imagine my surprise when I opened this guide and was referred to Her Majesty's Customs and Excise Tax for VAT. Six of 11 Chapters are specific to the U.K., and the references in the two appendices will do little good unless your target audience is British expats.

I urge Mr. Cavill to consider drafting a U.S. edition, and Amazon should make clear that this is a U.K. publication.

5 out of 5 stars I'M USING THIS BOOK TO TRAIN MY SECOND DOG!!!.......2007-03-02

This Book Works!!!

I'm using this book to train my second lab. I used this book to train my first lab (Ebony) in 1995 and am now using it now to train my new pup (Jack) in 2007. The book is geared for the hunter of both upland game birds and waterfowl, it is easy to read, easy to follow, and even easier to apply. Initially it utilizes the time that you are spending with your pup everyday anyway to turn it into a training session with more formal training sessions coming later.

I've read the other well known retriever training book (Game Dog) and to me it was half story/half training...with a long boring introduction. I don't know about you but when you bring that new pup home you don't want to spend time reading a boring story about some other hunter's dog that was the greatest bird dog that ever lived etc. etc. etc. You want to start training your new pup!!!

What I love about this book is that it has short introductions and then it gets into the meat of training your pup. The photos precede the text allowing you to have a visual image of what the training session is going to be like and then you'll read the text for more detailed information.

You will see within a short period of time that if you'll simply follow Mr. Mueller suggestions you'll have a pup that is not only learning to hunt but is also learning to think while hunting; which is an outstanding quality for a lab to have.

Don't wait until your pup is six months or a year old to start throwing some dummies around the yard to begin his "training"; do it now while the pup is still young (7/8 weeks) and learning is still fun. Oh, and don't let the title of this book fool you the book is 222 pages long...now does that sound like speed training!? This book teaches you to maximize the limited time we all have to train our pups in effect "speed training".

Be patient with those pups they learn quick...and I'll see ya'll in the field.

P.s. This book was written in 1987 before some of the modern dummies that are now used to train bird dogs. So, the only thing that I'm going to do different is initially use Dokken's Dead Fowl Trainers instead of those canvas covered boat bumpers before live bird introduction.

2 out of 5 stars Yeah, right!.......2001-05-15

Every dog trainer I've ever met says it takes three years to train a finished gun dog. Just the title of this book flies in the face of many years' experience. Of course, Mueller also advocates training with little treats for little gun dogs, which is reminiscent of those fluffy little poodles in the Westminster dog show. "Hey, Pup, Fetch It Up" by Bill Tarrant is a much better way to start a gun dog, and for advanced theory on how Labs think and work, "The Labrador Shooting Dog" by Mike Gould is awesome.

4 out of 5 stars A candle in the dark!.......2001-11-14

This Book has some age on it, but some things just never change. It was recommended reading when I start showing. It provides helpful insight for the novice that the experienced takes for granted everyone knows. This includes dressing the part (fashion may change but not the basics), what to take with you (even a change in water can disagree with your dog), and how to count up your points to the championship.

I recommend it for the novice showperson.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2001-06-04

I found this book to be both enjoyable and informative. Anyone interested in starting a dog showing hobby should consider reading this book.

1 out of 5 stars How to Show Your Own Dog.......2001-01-18

Fortunately this book is currently out of print, and should stay that way. The illustrations and pictures throughout the book date back to the late fifties and sixties. No where in the book does MS Nichols discuss in any detail the finer points of actually showing your purebred dog. To her benefit she did a very good job of depicting what it is like to attend a dog show and how champions earn their pionts. Unfortunatly, most of this information is not laid out in any organized manner. At times I felt like I was having a friendly cup of coffee as she skipped from one thought to another. Her biggest inside tip under the chapter "Tricks of the Trade" was "Keep your nose clean, your eyes and ears open, and your mouth closed until you know what it is all about." Good advice since you won't learn what showing your own dog is about from this source.

    Book Description

Dog collars are generally thought of as strictly functional, and it’s true that they’re crucial as both a training aid and a way of identifying Rover if he strays. But as this instruction book and kit shows, collars can also be fun, creative, and even elegant. This glitter dog-collar kit is a wonderful way to bond with a large or medium-sized dog whose neck measures 17” to 26”. That would include breeds from Irish setters, golden retrievers, and Labrador retrievers to Airedales, collies, and basset hounds. Glitter paint adds that extra special touch that separates the chic canine from the plain-Jane pooch.
