Want to learn how to speak the language of critters, large and small? Easy-to-read and understand, Ted Andrews's bestselling Animal Speak shows readers how to identify his or her animal totem and learn how to invoke its energy and use it for personal growth and inner discovery. Nature lovers will love this insightful compendium, chock-full of touching stories about animals, natural history, and animal folklore. Readers will also learn magical animal rites and how to read omens. Animal Speak includes a dictionary of bird, animal, reptile, and insect totems, which describe each creature's meaning. For example, if a person's totem is dragonfly, he or she was most likely excessively emotional and passionate in early years, learning with age to balance it with mental clarity and control. If a dragonfly suddenly shows up in your life, it means you may need to gain a new perspective or make a change. --P. Randall Cohan

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful way to become one with all of creation.......2007-06-01

I found this book gives me an open mind to how we can communicate with our "feathered friends". It is amazing, just keep your eyes open around you {work, driving, outside of your home, etc...) We all have something looking out for us, but you must realize it for your faith to grow in Mother Earth and Father Sky. This is a wonderful way to get in touch with our animal friends, and them to keep themselves dedicated to you. It all makes sense once you find your "feathery friend"...we all have some. I have 7, they give peace of mind and shed beauty over any area I'm at. This book will bring good things to you!

3 out of 5 stars An interesting work.......2007-04-15

I am keeping this book as a reference. It doesn't keep my attention the way that Nature Speak did, or even Enchantment of the Faery Realm, but it contains all sorts of interesting information about animals, both scientific and spiritual. Ted Andrews' writing always makes me smile, and this book did too, but it wasn't as easy to read cover to cover, probably because the info I wanted was broken up by both exercises and encyclopedic info about the totem animals, birds, reptiles, etc.

5 out of 5 stars Ted Andrews Is Magical!.......2007-04-05

I own every book (yes every book!) Ted has ever written. I first heard Ted Andrews years ago when he appeared at a Boston Book Store promoting his books. I was captivated by his words verbally and entranced by his books. He has "The Gift" of Animal Speak and anyone tuned into the animal world will understand and feel this power when they read Ted's books. Animal Speak is only the beginning. I suggest starting with this one and keep adding! What a wonderful world he has opened for us all. If you ever wondered why a Flicker keeps coming to your bird feeder each day, look it up in the book and find how Flicker's medicine is shaping your life and drumming new rhythms at this moment. He gives full and complete information on each animal, including their common traits and full magical powers.

I was introduced to this book in the early 90's. I have found it to be very helpful for my dream journaling and meditation clarifications. This book is a great addition to anyone's library of healing and spiritual growth information.

1 out of 5 stars Animal Speak: The Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great & Small.......2007-03-23

At first glance, I thought this book covered animals and their mysticality in an academic sense, but I was wrong. This delves into, specifically, Native American totem animals, and nothing beyond that. You got your wolves, eagles, bears, snakes, a few others, and that's about it. I was under the impression this book covered a multitude of animals, and discussed more than in depth descriptions of their importance specifically pertaining to the Native Americans and some rituals to attune yourself to different animals. Don't be fooled by the title, it does NOT cover all animals great and small, and neither of any outside of Native American spirituality.
This is the first book I've ever deemed worthless, but if you're curious about a select number of animals in Native American spirituality, this may be for you

An invaluable language manual for people who need to communicate with dogs, How to Speak Dog is far more than a simple training guide. Author Stanley Coren discusses at length the evolution of language in many species, and focuses as much on body language as he does on verbal communication. This is a man with his own theories on language development--when disagreeing with Chomsky or Darwin, he backs up his arguments with plenty of thorough, firsthand experience.

Separate chapters devoted exclusively to interpreting the movement of tails, ears, and bodies are fascinating, and can often provide surprisingly quick insight into canine behavior. There's a tremendous difference between showing affection and showing dominance, and humans have a strong tendency to misread our dogs' behavior and reward them in exactly the right way to ensure the continuation of frustrating behavior. Coren maintains that dogs can often learn far more words than we give them credit for--certainly, we've all seen pooches go bananas at the words walk and cookie, but he also suggests we watch for learned behaviors from certain words. Perhaps office gets your spaniel waiting by the door, or baby results in your terrier checking in on your child's location--you may just think it's cute, but actually, it's a sign of your dog's linguistic ability.

Whether you own a dog or two or work in the field of animal care, this manual will be a most informative read and is sure to have a positive effect on the relationship between you and man's best friend. --Jill Lightner

Book Description

Parlez-vous Doggish?

At long last, dogs will know just how smart their owners can be. By unlocking the secrets of the hidden language of dogs, psychologist Stanley Coren allows us into the doggy dialogue, or "Doggish," and makes effective communication a reality.

Drawing on substantial research in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and years of personal experience, Coren demonstrates that the average house dog can understand language at about the level of a two-year-old human. While actual conversation of the sort Lassie seemed capable of in Hollywood mythmaking remains forever out of reach, Coren shows us that a great deal of real communication is possible beyond the giving and obeying of commands.

How to Speak Dog not only provides the sounds, words, actions, and move-ments with which we can effectively communicate with our dogs, but also deciphers the signs that our dogs give to us. With easy-to-follow tips on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with one another, original drawings illustrating the subtleties of their body language, and a handy visual glossary and "Doggish" phrasebook, How to Speak Dog gives dog lovers the skills they need to improve their relationships with their pets.

5 out of 5 stars How to Speak Dog.......2007-03-30

Really like this book. I found this book a great read and it gave me a greater understanding and real incite into the canine's mind. For all those things your dog does and you don't know why or maybe you think you do, but you were wrong. This is definetely a MUST READ for any dog owner!

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile.......2007-03-09

With so many dog training books out there, it is refreshing to find one that discusses meaningfully how to communicate with your pet. If you're looking to dive deeper into this issue, check out "Adam's Task: Calling Animals by Name," by Vicki Hearne. Combining animal training with philosophy and literary criticism, it offers excellent insight into how animals communicate and respond to humans. The Atlantic Monthly called it "A fascinating and often surprising discussion of animal-human encounters." If you are an animal trainer-- or even just an animal lover--it's definitely worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this book for the appendix.......2006-12-27

From my reading, I understood Conlan's mission not to convince any of us that dog's have a language per se, but rather to cultivate our understanding regarding how dogs communicate through vocalization and body language--as well as their perspicacity in reading our own body language. I agree with one reviewer that this book might be beyond the average dog owner--I'm an average dog owner. But Conlan's descriptions of facial expressions (wrinkles, ear position, muzzle positions), vocalizations (growls, barks, yips) and body language (tail position, body position etc) could very well save your life; and I found this information alone more than recommends the book. It is packaged in the appendix for ready reference.

I was particularly glad to understand how to spot a dog that was confidently aggressive v. scared aggressive. Both are dangerous, but how you react to each is different. Every dog owner should understand this--for he/she needs to understand it for his/her own dog(s)as well as with any confrontations other dogs.

For purely practical information regarding dogs and the top issues that dog owners must wrangle with, I recommend Leader of the Pack. But with Conlan, you'll get specific understanding regarding dog body language as well as vocalizations to ensure success in reading the animal's state of mind. These two books together will give every dog owner the confidence and knowledge they need to be confident, responsible dog owners.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2006-07-01

I had my doubts about this book. I am a professional dog trainer, and a animal behaviorist. I would not recommened this book for your average reader. However it covers the basics of canine behavior very well and I would recommend it to anyone who trains dogs, or works with groups of dogs and wants a deeper understanding of their social interactions.
Reads a bit on the scientific side, so if your reading for entertainment you will probably be bored. If your reading to learn and increase your knowledge, you will probably enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Useful .......2006-06-06

I doubt that some of the examples were true to life. Some dogs were at first presented as knowing as much as a 3 year old human child. These dogs were presented as responding to long sentences and did things that dogs just cannot do. Then the book analysed these impossible canine responses. And I do not accept the book's analysis. These fantastic canine responses could not have happened as the book asserts.

However, the material presented seems sound enough in principal. I guess the author was taking artistic license to amplify the points of his thesis. Whatever, it doesn't matter.

This book does support many of my own observations and has given me insight into dog behavior that I was not yet aware.

I am 67, a lifetime dog owner who spent a year working full time for a Veterinarian when I was 17, and presently have a 5 year German Shepherd. If you are a typical dog owner you will gain much from this book.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Editing.......2007-06-15

It is time for Ted Andrews to take his share of responsibility for the poor quality of book produced by Dragonhawk Publishing (which I suspect is his own label). This book is so poorly edited that information at times becomes incomprehensible and/or inaccurate. His Animal Wise Tarot suffered from the same problem. This is an insult to readers. I respect the author's knowledge but will never buy another copy of any book he publishes under Dragonhawk; readers work hard for their money and deserve more respect than what Mr. Andrews is showing. How spiritually correct is that?

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book!.......2007-05-09

This book has alot of very useful information. I'm sure I will be using it as a reference book for a long while.

4 out of 5 stars A great work.......2007-04-15

I really really liked this book. It was relatively aimed at Wiccans and Pagans, but it had very nice information, both of a spiritual nature, and scientifically so, about all sorts of herbs, flowers, and trees. Some of the exercises seemed a little weird to me, but to each his own- someone might really benefit from these. I see the outdoors as an even more beautiful place after reading this book. Its definately worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Finding Spiritual in Everyday Life.......2007-01-03

After reading this book, you will not look at the world the same. Andrews points out simple ways to find the Divine in the everyday. A simple walk outside in your yard can be an act of worship!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could ask about Nature's symbolism (to you).......2006-02-27

I was on vacation in NW Canada Rockies area and discovered this book in a little shop, and I couldn't leave the country without it (just in case I couldn't find it quick enough in the US). It's beyond "plants" you ID with. There's ceremonies (like making a staff -- or celebrating Solstice etc), a dictionary of landscapes (why are you drawn to oceans), magical rhythms (like seasons, angels, etc) ... even the meaning of numbers in nature (why did you plant two birches?) And of course the expected definition of plants, trees, flowers, etc. (Marigold: "keynote: words have healing power; sacrifice out of love if necessary." "It is a flower of love and sacrifice")

Book Description

When Helen Finney feeds alphabet soup to her dog, Martha, it goes straight up to her brain, and Martha begins to speak! But having a talking dog isn't always as much fun as it seems.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gently humorous.......2006-09-28

Downing a bowl of alphabet soup the family dog comes up wordy in Susan Meddaugh's gently funny picture book. Friendly illustrations will soon have sympathetic kids relating their own version as Martha wears out her wonder with incessant chatter.

5 out of 5 stars Very Funny for Dog Lovers.......2006-07-28

I bought this book as a gift for a 5 year old, but found the humor to be a bit more sophisticated. My 9 year old son (& dog lover) found it to be hilarious. It will become a favorite gift of mine to give children in the 7-9 age bracket.

4 out of 5 stars a talking dog!.......2004-08-30

Kids love the idea of a talking dog, and Martha's story is amusing, as she develops the ability to speak after eating alphabet soup and then drives her family mad with her nonstop talking (except during her own televisioin shows, of course). It's unfortunate that the family eventually collectively yell at Martha to "SHUT UP!" but we just talk about the inappropriateness of the family's response, even when they're frustrated. Eventually they resolve the situation when Martha proves to be brave, intelligent and lucky during an encounter with a burglar. A bit loopy but kids love it/

5 out of 5 stars Good book for kids.......2004-08-29

At first I thought this was a good book, and was going to give it five stars, but then there was a big SHUT UP which wasn't really appropriate. And then there was a burglar which might be scary for kids, but it also taught you to dial 911 if something bad like the burgler happens, and it showed that Martha felt bad after her family yelled SHUT UP to her, so it kind of taught you not to yell SHUT UP, so I put it back up to 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Speak, girl!.......2004-05-07

Warning: By reading this book to your children you may be inadvertently encouraging them to force-feed their puppies alphabet soup. Creating a book that is as much comic strip as it is enjoyable picture book, Susan Meddaugh's enjoyable 1992 creation follows the adventures and misadventures of Martha the talking pup. After being fed a bowl of delicious alphabet soup, Martha, the family pet, begins talking in complete grammatically correct sentences. For the family, this new occurrence is initially a boon. Martha is able to explain all kinds of doggish mysteries, hitherto unexplained to humans. She answers the door to the pizza delivery girl, much to family's amusement. She amazes both family and friends. Unfortunately, there are downsides to owning a talking dog. Martha, once she learns how to dial the phone, is prone to ordering large quantities of barbecue beef. She doesn't understand such social niceties as not commenting on someone's appearance loudly in pubic (especially if that someone is fat). And she talks constantly about nothing at all. When the family finally proclaims that Martha's talking is too much, the humbled doggie falls into a deep depression and refuses to devour anymore alphabet soup. Fortunately the appearance of a nasty burglar in the home gives Martha the opportunity to save the day and reinstate herself as the family's favorite talking dog.

The book's an original, no question. Martha's constant chatter appears as speech balloons over her head. If you get this edition in hardback, I highly recommend that you flip to the author's photo on the back inside cover to see a picture of a dog that looks very much as if it might have been the inspiration for Martha's cuddly form. The illustrations are sweet and inticing and Martha says everything you'd expect a dog to say (if neutered). The double page spread of her blowing away the family with an incredibly long speech is particularly impressive. I suspect that if you were to read this book to your little one they would insist that you read every single word that pops out of Martha's mouth. All things considered, this might take some time so prepare to set aside some 20 minutes for a full and unabridged reading of the delightful "Martha Speaks". As for the use of the term, "shut up", (which the family yells at Martha when they canst takes it no more) this is left entirely up to the reader's discretion. If you live in a home where the phrase is considered impolite, you may wish to read it aloud from the book in a silly way, or simply disguise it as the less controversial "Be Quiet" (which I do not, personally, endorse). If this phrase is not considered impolite in your home, let rip and let go.

This is altogether a fine book and an amusing story. This is an excellent choice for those children interested in the intricacies of canine yabbering.

Book Description

The day Randy Grim got a phone call from a St. Louis animal shelter worker pleading with him to take yet another unwanted dog to his no-kill shelter, he had no idea that the dog would change his entire life. The dog had survived a horrifying procedure still practiced in some animal shelters: "euthanasia" by carbon monoxide gas poisoning. The account of Quentin's ordeal and the crusades Grim and Quentin have undertaken on behalf of abandoned animals is sobering, hilarious, and ultimately uplifting.

Grim and Quentin have appeared on numerous television shows including Today Show, Animal Planet, It's a Miracle, CNN, MSNBC, CBS News, CBS Early Show, Access Hollywood and in People Magazine, National Geographic, Forbes and Guideposts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very sad story with a happy ending........2007-02-23

The book was well written and definitely shows the horrors of what goes on behind the shelters in this country. Quentin was a miracle and how Randy saved him is nothing short of amazing. Through their events a change was made with the shelter orginizations throughout the country. Quentin and Randy were definitely meant to be together and their cause for animal rights is undying. I don't think one could of done what they did without the other. Very comical in many parts and hearbreaking in others. Worhtwhile reading. It opened my eyes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!!.......2007-01-09

This is a MUST READ for anyone that's involved in animal rescue, shelter work and animal control. It's also good for just about anyone who has compassion for animals. This dog's will to survive is incredible!

5 out of 5 stars The unforgetable human/animal bond.......2006-12-25

Not only is Quentin a miracle but the story needs to be told over and over again. Randy Grim reminds us that we humans are at our best when we listen to the animals. As a human/pet bond writer of a FULL-COLOR novel, "ME&YOUTOO: CATALYST", I can truly say this story is a wonderful narrative and beautifully told. Please read this and listen to Randy's message - we need to rescue the unwanted, the left-behind, and the discarded. These animals deserve better!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful animal story.......2006-04-25

This is the book to buy. What a wonderful book to write about a dog that has been through several struggles and survived. I would read all of her books that she writes. Great reviews....

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle that Keeps on Giving.......2006-02-15

This was a great story about a dog who survived an animal shelter gas chamber and lived to tell about it with the help of Randy Grim. No dog has ever survived the gas chamber in St. Louis, but Quentin did - named after the infamous Sam Quentin. Quentin was one of the millions given up by his guardians, more like sentenced to death by his guardians. If it weren't for Randy Grim's incredible work with the St. Louis Stray Rescue, Quentin would've survived the chamber only to put back in. But that wasn't the case. Randy was called and claimed Quentin, who became a nationwide spokes-dog championing no-kill shelters. Thanks to Randy and Quentin, St. Louis replaced the gas chamber (where animals truly suffered at the end of their lives) in their animal shelters with HUMANE euthanasia. Hopefully some day it will be a no-kill shelter, along with every animal shelter in this country.

I enjoyed reading it because the story is incredible and happy, it causes you to want to do something about the nationwide epidemic of homeless pets, the humor in the book made me laugh out loud, and it includes pictures (Quentin is adorable!).

"The Man Who Talks to Dogs" is definitely recommended as well!!

This book will help you understand why your dog is misbehaving, but it doesn't reallt provide enough info to help you correct the behavior.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading.......2006-11-07

Dog Speak is a must read for anyone who has a dog or loves dogs. This book is animated with the words that lead to solutions for every behavior problem imaginable. It is easy to read that will turn you into the "adoring master" your pet yearns for. Why? Because it teaches you how to interpret your dog's feelings, by understanding his or her verbal and non-verbal cues. Once you understand the pattern you can establish the rules of behaviors that are acceptable and those which are not. I would classify this book as the "bible of behavior" when it comes to communicating with "our four legged best friend". It certainly holds a prominent place on my book shelf

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!!!.......2006-10-24

When all else failed this book helped my family embrace our wonderful puppy and grow together as a pack. We now understand our dog better and can communicate more clearly with him. Bash's techniques are easy to implement, require no physical discipline and are the optimal solution for making your dog a better citizen both in your home and in public. Understanding the way dogs think, implementing these simple training techniques, and plenty of love is all a person needs to raise a wonderful dog. I highly recommend this book to dog owners new and old, especially those families with young children. Thanks Bash!

5 out of 5 stars the best book on communicating with your dog!.......2006-09-30

As always, Bash doesnt disappoint;like his other books this one is well thought out, informative and easy to read! Bash makes it easy to understand his philosophy and have fun reading at the same time.

This book should be on every dog owner's shelf! Bash has a deep understanding of all species of dogs, having trained first hand so many different kinds, not to mention his experiences with training wolves.

Its time for more books like this from Bash,he is the walking 'encyclopedia' and expert on training pets in this country, all other dog trainers should study first hand with him!

5 out of 5 stars I now understand "Dog Language!" .......2006-09-20

A fantastic book! Finally I understand what my dog is trying to say to me! I have thought to myself many times, "I wish she could talk, so I would know what she's saying." Well, now, after reading Bash Dibra's "DogSpeak," I truly can understand what my dog is telling me with her different body movements, actions, facial expressions, and vocalizations.

The book is amazing, and Bash Dibra is the ultimate master dog trainer. As one who has grown up with dogs and has had 4 cocker spaniels in the family over the years, I am always looking to learn more about my newest little one (8-month old Brady). Dibra is truly the authority on how to understand animals. He is, without a doubt, the best in the world.

I have always been impressed by Dibra. All of his books show a sincere love and devotion to animals. It is clear from his writing that Dibra is a gentle and caring individual who truly loves and respects the dogs he trains. Because of his connection with the animals, he is able to understand their communication. It's almost as though he can read their minds. No kidding. He knows exactly what they are thinking. I trust him and his techniques implicitly.

Not only is the book written in clear and interesting language, but the advice Dibra gives is absolutely golden! The training works beautifully and it fosters a loving, trusting, and respectful relationship between dog and owner. I know first hand -- I have used Dibra's techniques and my dog is an absolute doll. She has earned the reputation of being the neighborhood sweetheart. I firmly believe this is a result of using Dibra's book and communicating well with my dog. After all, I can finally understand her language!

This book is a MUST for any dog owner. Dibra is the definition of an expert. How many other authors have trained a wolf???! No other author or trainer can remotely compare. I recommend this book with the utmost enthusiasm. If my dog could speak, she would too! DogSpeak absolutely deserves five stars.

5 out of 5 stars One of my absolute favorite books of all time!.......2006-10-06

I have dozens and dozens of books in the fields of Spirituality, New Age and Eastern Religion, and this book is one of the most inspiring, deeply moving, and life changing in my collection. I have read things in this book that I have not found anywhere else. Penelope's experiences of animal communication rings true to my heart. Her abilities and experiences have had a profound impact on my world view and have inspired me greatly. Reality is far vaster and far more magical than we have been taught to believe. While others may find this possibility threatening, I find it liberating and a way of connecting with my soul's truth.

1 out of 5 stars How Sad.......2002-11-28

If you think you can learn anything valuable from a person who believes they were once a Yetti (Big Foot) in a previous life, who communicates with faeires, and can control the elements, then spend your money. You won't be disappointed. This woman is totally off her rocker. She believes she communicated with a horse with an evil spirit, the spirit left the horse after she spoke with it, and then caused planetary changes and the demise of Communism. HUH? The woman is totally out of touch with nature, her spiritual side, and most importantly herself. Go back to the basics Penelope. Learn to love the animals again for who they are. Do not impose on them your own distorted beliefs.

5 out of 5 stars very entertaining.......2002-03-22

What a hoot! This book is fabulous and very entertaining, well worth the money. I found it in a bookstore and could not put it down. It will provide you with plenty of hilarious anecdotes and ridiculous stories to amuse your friends. Anyone who does not like this book probably was taking it too seriously, or didn't fully realize what they would get from a book on "interspecies telepathic communication." High ratings for imagination and camp value, new age to the hilt, and absolutely, completely, totally out there. And, yes, as a previous reviewer alluded to, she has her own way of relating to and caring for animals - definitely not the way I would treat an animal in my care. I give it a 5 star rating over all.

5 out of 5 stars For those with open hearts.......2001-02-15

This is an excellent book for readers who already accept telepathic animal communication as reality. As the subtitle states, this is ADVANCED Interspecies Communication. Begin with wonderful books such as Patty Summers' Talking With the Animals and Arthur Meyers' Communicating With Animals and practice with your animal companions before tackling the concepts presented here. As I continue to learn and improve my own telepathic connection, I reread sections of When Animals Speak and more and more of Penelope's statements that seemed beyond belief are now fitting like puzzle pieces into my newly-expanded worldview. I especially appreciate Penelope's candor as she describes being torn between providing the safe environment she'd like for her animals or granting them the autonomy for which they long. And I'm grateful for the wise words and lessons from the animal teachers which Penelope shares with the rest of us.

1 out of 5 stars Crackpot or charlatan?.......2000-05-04

I started this book with an open mind, really wanting to believe. As I read through the chapters, I could literally feel the doors slamming shut in my brain. I went from hope, to disbelief, to anger at paying money for this kind of unadulterated, new-age garbage. Penelope Smith claims to be able to communicate telepathically with animals. She claims to be an animal lover. As I read chapter after chapter, I became progressively more horrified as she told stories of her neglect and abuse of the animals under her care. The healthy Afghan hound she had put down, ostensibly because "She asked me to help her leave her body and this plane of existence", when in reality she just couldn't deal with having the dog around at the time. The other Afghan hound that showed symptoms of suffering from a brain tumor that she let go 5 days without eating, meditating over it to "Help it leave its body" instead of taking it for a quick and merciful end. This was her favorite dog that she couldn't seem to let go of. The tales of how she let her dogs run free in the woods to chase deer. She complains about her neighbors "Because they were sometimes quite critical and hostile". Well, perhaps that had something to do with the fact that Smith let her 2 dogs roam free, and both of them bit her neighbor while she was out jogging? Or could it have been that Smith's cat Sherman (who also was allowed to roam the countryside) got in the habit of visiting these same beleaguered neighbors, beating up and bullying their cats? Smith says to Sherman, "How could you do this?" She makes him promise not to do it again. He does it again. Three more times. Then there's the story of the 2 dogs that she let breed uncontrolled twice, because she thought it would be nice to have the puppies. This in spite of the fact that the female dog had severe behavior problems, and came from a line of dogs that displayed vicious and uncontrollable behavior.Smith has a glib answer and a spiritual reason for her neglect and abuse of the animals under her care. She even admits that she calls the vet only as a last resort. This, from a woman who lives in a very wealthy part of California; a woman who makes a lot of money using these animals to "teach" gullible people how to communicate telepathically with them. As I read, I went back and forth, wondering, "Is this woman delusional, or is she a slick and conniving charlatan?" After reading her explanation that Afghan hounds did not evolve on Earth, but rather were brought here from outer space in their present form, I'm starting to believe she is both. Oh wait, I think I'm getting a telepathic communication from Smith's animals...yes, it's coming in loud and clear...it's... "GET US OUT OF HERE!"

Illustrated in gorgeous, muted hues, this board-book version of an elegantly simple poem is a picture perfect introduction to animal--and people--sounds for very young readers. Every page, framed in decorative borders, reveals a critter making noise: "Flies hum. / Dogs growl. / Bats screech. / Coyotes howl. / Frogs croak. / Parrots squawk. / Bees buzz. / But I talk!" The animal sounds emerge from or surround the animal itself; thus, "snore snore snore snore..." wafts drowsily out of the mouth of the slumbering bear as snow drifts around the edges of the den. Three children, of different ethnicities, make occasional, giggling appearances throughout, urging each other forward to let their own voices be heard: "But I speak!" "But I say!" "But I talk!" Award-winning artist Tomie dePaola (26 Fairmount Avenue) is in fine form with his luminous folk-art illustrations, which make a delightful accompaniment to Arnold L. Shapiro's friendly rhymes. (Baby to preschool) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Three children describe a menagerie of animals and the sounds they make. Purring cats, snoring bears, mooing cows, and quacking ducks are all pictured in bright bold colors. This is a perfect read-along book for the younger set-the catchy, rhyming text begs to be read aloud. Young children won't be able to resist roaring, hooting, and neighing along!

"dePaola's exuberant illustrations in his best folk-art style will have kids joining in and shouting out the words."-Booklist, starred review

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2006-05-12

This is one of the best books about animal sounds ever written. I teach 2 year olds at a daycare center and this is the only book they will sit through from beginning to end. This book even has the other teachers impressed when they peak in my room and the toddlers are all sitting at attention. We read it nearly every day!

5 out of 5 stars Strongly recommended........2005-12-13

Tomie diPaola's absolutely gorgeous illustrations carry this simple animal-sounds poem to the next level. I like the inclusion of the animal world beyond the barnyard - there are dozens of books informing children that ducks quack and cows moo, but this one includes howling coyotes, creaking crickets, squawking parrots, and chattering monkeys. My 8-month-old adores this book and turns the pages eagerly to see which animals come next.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Read.......2003-07-06

I began reading this book to my daughter when she was 19 months old. Before about that age, she had said very little, mostly animal sounds. Then suddenly, speaking was all that interested her. So this beautiful poem seemed a triumphant expression of her newly discovered voice: "I talk!" A month of very frequent (on request) readings later, my daughter helps by "reading" all the verbs. I think this might be my favorite of her books. It appeals to both her toddler aesthetic and my grown-up one.

5 out of 5 stars Hours of enjoyment.......2002-09-08

With restrained colors, this board book is a fun poem to read aloud, with plenty of ways to expand upon the story. Cute drawings, plenty of opportunities to make animal sounds. For example, "Crickets Creak / Mice Squeak / Sheeps Baa/ BUT I SPEAK.... Horses Neigh / .. BUT I SAY... / Parrots Squawk / BUT I TALK"

5 out of 5 stars Adorable.......2001-09-22

The three children are absolutely adorable. The animals are cute. The word bites in this book are short and to the point. This is a great book for toddlers and early pre-readers. It can easily keep the attention of both of my children. I enjoy reading this book to my children and have yet to get tired of it. Certainly, this book is a good addition to your child's library.

"How to Speak Dolphin in Three Easy Lessons," by Dan Greenburg, is #11 in the "Zack Files" series of short novels for young readers. The book is illustrated by Jack E. Davis. In this installment, our hero Zack is vacationing in Florida with his dad, and discovers that he (Zack, that is) has the ability to communicate telepathically with dolphins. Before the story is over, he must solve a mystery involving the marine mammals.

This book strikes just the right balance of paranormal fantasy, silly humor, and mystery. Greenburg gets extra points for incorporating the classic board game Scrabble into the story!

I really like the way this guy writes but this book is a bit over the top.

5 out of 5 stars A Remarkable Guidebook.......2003-02-20

The Animal-Speak is a remarkable guidebook. Even if some readers do not feel altogether comfortable with the idea of telepathy with animals (much less humans), The knowledge about animals author Ted Andrews shares nonetheless is invaluable. Andrews has written more than two dozen books (including ANIMAL-SPEAK and ANIMAL-WISE). Andrews says wild animals have much to teach us and that through our bonds with pets or domesticated animals, we can become more aware or and tie into the intelligence that binds all nature. Animals can help us become more human and less mechanistic.

Each of the book's 10 chapters explores different aspects of the relationships of human to animal and animal to animal. If you are a skeptic about the depth of communication possible with the animal kingdom, personal stories such as Andrews' encounter with a barracuda show there are eminently practical aspects of such interactions. The chapter on animal communication and telepathy offers common-sense insights, and Andrews' also covers shamanic quests, spirit masks, shapeshifting and medicine shields.

Andrews does not try to be cute in his exploration of human-animal relations. While the book is not rich in children's stories that are understandable by the very young, there is no doubt that even preteens can benefit enormously from key chapters, such as "The Power of Domestic Animals", because most children have direct experience with pets at home or with animals on a farm. Andrews' rich insights and deep respect for the natures of our animal friends will serve members of that young audience well as they grow up to become Earth stewards. The book includes an excellent reference-guide appendix to the meanings of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, amphibians, and sea creatures to assist readers in utilizing the wisdom the text contains.
