4 out of 5 stars Good starter book series.......2007-05-12

Good books to help me and my grandchildren communicate. We started a book discussion club. Great quality time.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-05-06

These books are great chapter books to introduce to a three or four year old. I started reading them to my son when he was four, and he's enjoyed every one. He will enjoy them again when he's older and can read them to himself. I've also given them to my son's friends as birthday gifts. They'll last longer than some plastic toy that a child will get bored with.

5 out of 5 stars Great Books.......2007-04-13

These are great for young readers to read to their parents or a younger sibling. They are informative and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Great, must read for all children, Absolutely wonderful series........2007-02-15

I am so impressed with the writings of Mary Pope Osborne. My 4 1/2 year old cannot wait for each night to come to find out the next adventure Jack and Annie must take and the next clue or riddle they must solve. We read one book each night - and they hold her attention until the end.

These books are cleverly written - they both entertain and educate a child on historical events. I would say these books should be on all children's "must read" list.

If you do get them, please get them in order - the riddles are usually done in sets of four - so keep getting them that way. For example the first four in the series leaves clue to this Mysterious M person - (I'm not giving it away) and it is not until book 4 you find out who that is. The next four deal with solving a set of clues or riddles to solve a problem. So, it is best to read them in order and in get all four at one time.

We are now up to number 26 in the series, and my daughter has come up with quite a few stories of her own. She realizes the events happened, but she still has quite of an imagination and pretends she too is solving the problems. She has also impressed her pre-k teacher with what she knows about these subjects. She goes in and tells her all about them.

I cannot say enough about these books - great, must read for all children. I would give it 10 stars if the ratings went that high.

Book Description

A timeless tale by the incomparable Kate DiCamillo, complete with stunning full-color plates by Bagram Ibatoulline, honors the enduring power of love.

"Someone will come for you, but first you must open your heart. . . ."

Once, in a house on Egypt Street, there lived a china rabbit named Edward Tulane. The rabbit was very pleased with himself, and for good reason: he was owned by a girl named Abilene, who treated him with the utmost care and adored him completely.

And then, one day, he was lost.

Kate DiCamillo takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the depths of the ocean to the net of a fisherman, from the top of a garbage heap to the fireside of a hoboes' camp, from the bedside of an ailing child to the bustling streets of Memphis. And along the way, we are shown a true miracle — that even a heart of the most breakable kind can learn to love, to lose, and to love again.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good and easy to read.......2007-06-11

Edward Tulane is an uncaring toy rabbit made out of china and rabbit fur who has never loved anyone but himself. His eleven year-old owner Abilene loves him very much but when she, her mother, and Edward go on a ship across the ocean to England, Edward is taken from Abilene by two boys. He is then stripped of his clothes and thrown into the water. He sinks to the bottom and for the first time in his life he feels something. Fear. Edward is rescued and travels from owner to owner and from place to place. During his journey he learns how to love, and then his heart is broken and vows never to love again. But he does.

This is a charming book about love, hope, and a toy rabbit's journey home. I did not think that it was very sad, but some people might. Fans of animals and drama should read this book for sure.

1 out of 5 stars Disturbing.......2007-05-30

I read the first few chapters of this book standing in a book store. They were beautifully written. I bought the book for my 7 year old son. Fortunately, I read it first before giving it to him. I will not let him read it. The book takes a disturbing religious turn 3/4 of the way through, with the rabbit strung up as a scarecrow (actually its ears are nailed) to a cross, waiting to be saved. Several of the characters in the story are abusive to a point that is not acceptable to me in a children's book (a young boy being slapped in the mouth). There are plenty of good books for children on the market. This isn't one of them.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging Story to Share with Your Children.......2007-05-28

This is a sweet story with great illustrations that was perfect for me to share with my 7-year-old daughter. The story was engaging with mini-cliff hangers at the end of each chapter. Edward Tulane meets a variety of interesting characters on a journey that is at turns filled with despair, hope, and ultimately and always love. Enjoy and share with your children.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely, but not necessarily for kids.......2007-05-24

I see a lot of the reviewers liked this book, but few of them commented on how they liked it for their kids. I know the review says 3-6 grade, but we got this as a gift and read it to our 6 year old. His reading level is quite high, so I was pleased with how the book was written. Her language, the way she puts a sentence together, is so lovely and beautiful. As soon as we'd finish one chapter, he'd be clamoring to start the next.

He liked the book, although there were some parts he may not have understood completely. Fine, I accept that. But there were some parts that I thought were a little rough for him, and maybe would have been rough even for a 3-6 grader. Specifically the story line with the abused children struck me as too rough to read as a kids' book in our house. Not that we deny to the kids that there are bad people in this world, but the story line was too hopeless to explain.

At the risk of writing a spoiler, let me say this: from the moment Edward starts his journey, each person's life that he touches is flawed, sometimes severely. And to this end, the happiness he brings into their lives is what is touching. But whereas Edward is redeemed by the end of the book, everyone else is still miserable, or in some cases, worse.

So my final thought is if you like Kate DiCamillo's writing, read this book. It's wonderfully written, and it is, indeed a weeper. But be prepared that if you read it to kids, the dark parts may outweigh the light.

5 out of 5 stars INSTINCT PURCHASING.......2007-05-12

I'm a young adult, and I had most of the collection as a kid.

I was perusing amazon, just for fun, and saw this set for a hundred bucks... I showed my sister....she encouraged the purchase...and I bought it. I'm in college, so a hundred bucks is like a thousand. It's a GREAT BUY, no doubt; this is a timeless collection, and this edition is a step up than the previous.

No regrets. Keeping it for my own kids.

5 out of 5 stars It is best!!.......2007-03-08

I want to commend to other people to read this book. It is really interested.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful set, wonderful story........2006-12-12

This is a wonderful little box set and ideal for new readers. Beatrix Potter stories vary in their quality of writing, but all are just wonderfully and whimsically illustrated. Lovely to have them all in their individual books rather than the large collected volume that we have been using at home. As another reader noted, this is great for little hands, but watch out they are easy to lose!

the stories are lovely, most people will know the story of Peter Rabbit and probably Jemima Puddleduck. There are some absolutely wonderful stories in this collection and you will really enjoy getting to know them with your children. The tale of Samuel Whiskers, Two Bad Mice, and Ginger and Pickles are particular favourites of my 3 and 4 year olds. As some characters turn up in other stories, it is a wonderful world for them to inhabit and identify with.

there may be some worries that, as they are 100 years old or so, some things in them are particular to the time and may not be easily explained - but why should this matter? Worlds are full of strange and wonderful things - of imperial measurements, strange rhymes and odd jobs. Of self-fitting candles and pounds, shilling and pence.

The characters are wonderful and the stories fun - beautifully illustrated too. I would also take this chance to highly recommend the animated dvd and videos of these stories, these are near perfect renditions of the stories and are great for the children to add to the experience - they have Niamh Cusack as Beatrix Potter part narrator.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Splendid.......2006-09-27

The 23 original tales by Beatrix Potter comes in a sturdy presentation box. All 23 tales are of the original art work and are beautifully made. The books are small for little hands (just the way Beatrix Potter wanted them). The stories are classic and completely timless and brings backs many memories of childhood. They are perfect for adults and their little ones.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Difficult to read.......2007-06-27

I loved the tale of Peter Rabbit so I decided to get the collection of Beatrix Potter's "tales" for my 4 year old son. I've been trying to introduce books that are a bit longer and have different stories or chapters to encourage him to want to hear the next story (pre-reading skills). He often used to ask me to read an entire children's book which could be as long as 45 pages, which wouldn't help him when he was learning to read and I wouldn't want him to become frustrated. Many of the Beatrix Potter stories are a bit difficult to read aloud to a child since the language is more proper English rather than current day conversational English and consequently can be difficult to follow for a young child.

Kate DiCamillo, author of the Newbery Honor book Because of Winn-Dixie, spins a tidy tale of mice and men where she explores the "powerful, wonderful, and ridiculous" nature of love, hope, and forgiveness. Her old-fashioned, somewhat dark story, narrated "Dear Reader"-style, begins "within the walls of a castle, with the birth of a mouse." Despereaux Tilling, the new baby mouse, is different from all other mice. Sadly, the romantic, unmouselike spirit that leads the unusually tiny, large-eared mouse to the foot of the human king and the beautiful Princess Pea ultimately causes him to be banished by his own father to the foul, rat-filled dungeon.

The first book of four tells Despereaux's sad story, where he falls deeply in love with Princess Pea and meets his cruel fate. The second book introduces another creature who differs from his peers--Chiaroscuro, a rat who instead of loving the darkness of his home in the dungeon, loves the light so much he ends up in the castle& in the queen's soup. The third book describes young Miggery Sow, a girl who has been "clouted" so many times that she has cauliflower ears. Still, all the slow-witted, hard-of-hearing Mig dreams of is wearing the crown of Princess Pea. The fourth book returns to the dungeon-bound Despereaux and connects the lives of mouse, rat, girl, and princess in a dramatic denouement.

Children whose hopes and dreams burn secretly within their hearts will relate to this cast of outsiders who desire what is said to be out of their reach and dare to break "never-to-be-broken rules of conduct." Timothy Basil Ering's pencil illustrations are stunning, reflecting DiCamillo's extensive light and darkness imagery as well as the sweet, fragile nature of the tiny mouse hero who lives happily ever after. (Ages 9 and older) --Karin Snelson

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great book, for those who love words.......2007-06-27

This book was so much fun to read as adult, even though it is written for a younger audience. The author's use of obscure and advanced vocabulary is a great opportunity to learn new words and to be entertained at the same time. I read the book last year after I was introduced to it by the professor of the reading class that I was taking. I love how the author uses irony, personification of animals, and directly addressing the reading throughout the book. The story has great themes that apply to all ages and are timeless. It was also full of content that would make it an interesting and lighthearted way to open the door to discussions with children on a variety of topics including: individuality, redemption, and child abuse and neglect. It is a rich story full of unique and largely likeable characters. It is set in a castle that may feel familiar, but is unique for many reasons. The extended length of the title is also another point of interest to me. If you do not know the definition of perfidy when you begin the book, you most certainly will when you are done.

5 out of 5 stars A Courageous Mouse!.......2007-06-20

Who has ever heard of a mouse that loves art, music, and books? What type of mouse can read? What mouse could ever fall in love with a princess and fight rats to survive? This is a tale of an unlikely hero who conquers many forces of evil to triumph--all in the name of love!

5 out of 5 stars The Tale of Depereaux.......2007-06-08

In The Tale Of Despereaux light, darkness, love and evil can all be found in the castle. But in what order do these things happen. The book takes you back and forth while other events are taking place. For Example, we learned that Mig turns to the rat. All of this is taking place as Despereaux finds Botticelli. Botticelli is trying to lead him to nothing but suffering and despair, which is what he lives for. The mouse falls in love with the princess, Mig wants to take her place and a rat is out for revenge. So what do you think will happen next? Does Mig become princess, Does Despereax marry his true love, did the rat Roscuro every find light and his revenge? The book uses light and dark to symbolize good and evil. I believe that Despereaux is the light and the rats are the darkness. But don't take my word for it; read it for yourself, you won't regret it.

1 out of 5 stars What is the moral of this "Tale"?.......2007-06-04

Let me first state I do not have a problem with "dark" children's books. Roald Dahl is not all sunshine and light, nor is Lemony Snicket and we love them. I do not quibble with challenging situations in children's literature.

However, in a book that antropomorphizes creatures, where the spectacular may occur, I feel compelled to agree with my fellow critics who state that the treatment of the character Miggory Sow is atrocious....but the treatment of the character is only a by-product of a flawed tale that abuses the simplistic premise that all that is beautiful is good and things that are not, aren't.

My children and I discussed this problem. The princess in the story is beautiful. She is so much light and goodness, in fact, that her character lacks any shading. She represents everything good and Desperaux worships her, though she does little good besides look good. Miggory Sow is an unattractive house girl, with pig eyes and cauliflower ears from abuse. She is written with little depth or much humanity. The story implies that her station in life and looks are all we need consider to indicate a lack of intelligence or beauty in her soul. Miggory Sow was written so unsympathetically and the princess so one-sided, I wondered if Ms. Dicamillo was giving us her views on the social order.

It was an interesting discussion with my children. My three daughters thought it was mildly interesting - but not recommendable. My sons didn't care for it. I hated it. We sold the book, though I considered throwing it away. Just one family's opinion....

1 out of 5 stars Dark -- not for kids.......2007-06-03

I really tried to like this book. But the terrible scenes of violence to Miggery Sow and the dark portrayal human nature were left unredeemed and and unenlightening. If a book is a mirror into the soul of people, then this one is too cracked and dark to be of appreciable value.

Subtitled A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, this absurd and very simple story has become a classic, selling hundreds of thousands of copies since its first publication in 1940. A peddler walks around selling caps from a tall, tottering pile on his head. Unable to sell a single cap one morning, he walks out into the countryside, sits down under a tree, checks that all the caps are in place, and falls asleep. When he wakes up, the caps are gone--and the tree is full of cap-wearing monkeys. His attempts to get the caps back generate the kind of repetitive rhythm that 3- and 4-year-olds will adore. (Preschool and older) --Richard Farr

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL EDITION TO AN OLD, OLD CLASSIC.......2007-05-12

I hate to admit it, but I can remember this story being read to me by my mother shortly after it was first published. I loved it as a child and love it now. The story, at first glance is simple, well told and an absolute delight. The illustrations are "old world," and the type I grew up on. Even though the story has been around for years and years, it is certainly no worse for the wear. What delighted me as a child seems to delight the kids of today. I read this one to my various classes and the kids all seem to love it. Actually, there is not much to not like about this one. Recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Never Gets Old.......2007-05-02

I recently started reading this book to my two year old, and she loves it as much as I did when I was young. It's fun to incorporate lessons on counting and colors as we read this silly tale of monkey see, monkey do.

5 out of 5 stars Monkey See Monkey Do.......2007-03-29

"Once there was a peddler who sold caps. But he was not like an ordinary peddler carrying his wares on his back. He carried them on top of his head."

When a peddler falls asleep on the job, he finds that his caps are stolen by a bunch of cheeky monkeys. The peddler discovers a way to get his caps back in a hilarious illustration of "Monkey see monkey do".

This book, first written in the 1940's has stood the test of time.

I read this book to my own two kids, so when I saw it on the list from Amazon, I ordered it for the grandchildren, who enjoy it just as much.

5 out of 5 stars a family favorite.......2007-01-04

I fondly remember this book from my childhood and wanted to share it with my children. They love the story and even act out the parts and try to balance several hats on their heads. My 3 yr old requests it practically every night.

"There has obviously been some kind of mistake," writes Alexander T. Wolf from the pig penitentiary where he's doing time for his alleged crimes of 10 years ago. Here is the "real" story of the three little pigs whose houses are huffed and puffed to smithereens... from the wolf's perspective. This poor, much maligned wolf has gotten a bad rap. He just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, with a sneezy cold, innocently trying to borrow a cup of sugar to make his granny a cake. Is it his fault those ham dinners--rather, pigs--build such flimsy homes? Sheesh.

This 10th-anniversary edition of Jon Scieszka's New York Times Best Book of the Year, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs!, includes a special, impassioned letter from prisoner A. Wolf himself and a snappy new jacket by Caldecott Honor artist Lane Smith, whose quirky perspectives still color the illustrations throughout. As with The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales, the collaborators take a classic story and send it through the wisecracker machine, much to the glee of kids young and old. (Ages 4 to 8 or much, much older) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

In this best-selling collaboration between author (and performer) Jon Scieszka and illustrator Lane Smith, with music by noted composer Kurt Hoffman, you will hear Alexander T. Wolf tell the story from his point of view. Side one features narration and music, while side two has music alone, so that you can read it out loud by yourself.

2 out of 5 stars Several things.......2007-06-01

Several things- I don't think it's too hard to borrow off a classic story to try to make a cute book- so I would not go overboard stating this book is super creative.

Another thing- I don't like the language and tone of the book, and just think it's wierd. I know it's a kids boke, and a joke, but it's got odd lanuguage for a kids book...and I promise I am not a super-conservative...but the underlying tone is violent....

Here for example:

"Now I am usually a calm fellow....I go a little crazy"
"And do you know what that little porker answered?"
(About the 1st pig) " he was dead as a doornail, it's a shame to leave a good ham. So I ate it up"
"And your old granny can sit on a pin"

I think it's negative, and crass.

I have to give it atleast a 2 beacuase the illustrations are phenomenal though!

5 out of 5 stars A funny book.......2007-05-28

I stumbled on this one.

This funny story is about Alexander T. Wolf as he explains his side of the story of the three little pigs.

As he would have you belive he was maligned for having a cold and needing a cup of sugar for the cake he is making for his dear old granny. He sets out to borrow one and twice he accidentally sneezes and blows down the straw house and the stick house.

In both cases the pigs die and not wanting to waste; he eats them.

Problems arise at the brick house. The third pig says some mean things about the granny and he gets mad. The police arrive and he is arrested and later framed by the press for the crimes he didn't really commit.

The book is fun. The artwork is funny and there are witty jokes all through it.

5 out of 5 stars READ THIS FOR A CHANGE .......2007-05-23

The problem of this book that I read was that the story of the Three little Pigs was just a fake according to what Alexander the Wolf is telling. What A.Wolf is saying is that the whole problem that started with the whole huffing and puffing and blowing your house sort of thing was mistold.Because according to A.Wolf was that it all started when he was making his grandma a cake and had a terrible cough and needed a cup of sugar so he went to the two little pigs house which was made out of straw and sticks he knocked on the door and it fell right in no one answered so then his terrible sneeze blew the house down and there the two little pigs were drop dead so it would be a shame to leave them so he ate them, next he went to the third little pigs hose wich was made out of bricks he asked for a cup os sugar and he didnt answer so he stated sneezing alot and couldnt calm down the cops came and got him.So they thought the story Alexander Wolf was boring so they jazzed it up with the whole huffing and puffing. And all that happened just because of a little sneeze would u belive that just a little sneeze how uncalled for was that, and to think that nothing else would happen. So i really recommend this book to eveyone because its funny and entertaining which is really unusual because every book I read was ok not so entertaning. so that all i have to say wait just read the book and find out.

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-04-27

I love reading this book to my daughter! She is not even 2 yet, but loves the illustrations and the sneezing! So cute, I highly reccomend this book!

5 out of 5 stars The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.......2007-03-21

I read The True Story of the Three Little pigs by Jon Scieszk. I liked this book because the big bad wolf tried to
blow the houses down , but he couldn't. In the book I read when the wolf went to borrow something from the
pigs he accidently blew the house down. This helped convince me that it was a good book.

Goose Girl

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Goose Girl.......2007-06-13

At first, I was skeptical of a book titled THE GOOSE GIRL, but I borrowed it from the library anyway. Little did I know that this magical debut would become one of my favorite books and Shannon Hale my favorite author.

To keep peace between two nations, Princess Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee, first daughter and jewel of Kildenree (Ani for short) is sent to the kingdom of Bayern to marry the prince. On the way, she is betrayed by her lady-in-waiting and half of her guards. Alone, Ani finds her way to the capital of Bayern where she gets the job of watching the king's geese, all the while waiting for her chance to regain her name.

Though a fantasy, THE GOOSE GIRL seems realistic. There is magic, but a believeable sort. Ani, too, is a believable and likeable heroine, and the supporting characters are three dimensional as well.

THE GOOSE GIRL'S biggest fault is that it's slow-moving. Not boring, but it is long and the story could have been told in less pages, which might be a turn-off to some readers. The first part is especially slow. There is also some violence, though certainly not as much as the sequel ENNA BURNING. However, Shannon Hale's writing is absolutely beautiful. Wonderful metaphors and imagery and vivid word choices make this one of the best debut novels that I've read and certainly one of the most magical books.

This is a novel that I strongly recommend to all, especially those who love retellings of fairy tales. Though certainly not perfect, THE GOOSE GIRL is truly a lovely book that definitely does not disappoint.

3 out of 5 stars A good read, but not her best work.......2007-06-09

Even if you didn't like the book, you must agree that it was well written. Shannon Hale does a marvelous job of story-telling. Some of it was predictable, but the characterization was fantastic and the world she creates easy to visualize. There is one thing I'll bring up for those concerned with content. One of the characters tells a story about women baring their breasts. It was an unnecessary addition to anotherwise perfectly clean story. All three of the books in this trilogy have things in them that really could have been left out and been much better books for it. I'd recommend "Princess Academy" before recommending this one.

5 out of 5 stars Love this Book.......2007-06-01

I read this book on recommendation from my local childrens librarian. I loved it and recommended it to my family to read. The descriptions are so different from what you usually read. My sister said she would have put it down during the first few chapters if I hadn't raved about the book so much. She thought the plot started slowly. I didn't feel that way at all, and after the first few chapters, she couldn't put the book down either. I love the characterization. The dialogue is great. The imagery is very clear, and the book flows very enjoyably, with just enough tension to keep it interesting all the way to the end. I've read all three of the Goose Girl series, and was not disappointed with any of them.

5 out of 5 stars Mother Goose with Morality.......2007-05-30

I'm a sucker for modernized mythology and fairy tales (Mother Goose with morality, essentially). This book is easily one of the best. In the strain of Ella Enchanted it covers the fairy tale of the goose girl. When starting out I was expecting this book to follow the old tired plot "princess doesn't want to marry prince but falls in love with him despite her feminist leanings." This was a welcome twist on that unfortunate plot line, with the main character Princess Ani, kicking serious butt.

The queer, shy, swan and wind whispering Princess Anidora of Kildenree is sent to a neighboring country in marriage. After en-route betrayal Anidora is reduced to goose girl, herding the flocks for the royal she was meant to marry.

A book like this doesn't come along often. I was elated at the finishing page, completely transported to the mystical lands Shannon Hale created. I wish I could wipe my mind free of the plot and read it all over again, completely fresh, welcoming the thralls of a perfectly executed story.

5 out of 5 stars My Review.......2007-04-22

This is book is an outstanding masterpiece with humor, romance and strong words. I would recommend this book to ages 10-20.

Anidori-Kiladra Talianna Isilee (Ani) was born Crown Princess of Kildenree.
In the first part of the book 'Crown Princess' the narator tells a bit about Ani's life when she was younger. The narator introduces Selia, her Aunt, the queen and the king, and how the queen takes her off her rightful throne to be married to a prince in far-away Bayern.
So Ani and her guards, and mercinaries, and Selia set off to Bayern. On the way there Selia, with the gift of people speaking, enchants the mercinaries and some of the guards to work for her cause and take Ani away and replace Ani with Selia. Only a few loyal guards were left and Ani thought that they were all dead. So Ani has to run from them, without taking her special horse.

Then it goes into the next part of the book 'Goose Girl' in which she becomes a goose girl to disguise who she really is...

5 out of 5 stars Fire Star.......2007-06-26

Another excellent book by Chris D'Lacey. And the BIG news is that this was NOT the last book in the series as had been reported. Book FOUR - The Fire Eternal - has been completed and is due for release in the UK in Sept 2007. I think it will be available in the US in March of 2008!

I can't wait! Check out his website for info on the new book, but beware, some of the things you 'thought' happened at the end of book 3, aren't quite what you think. :-)

Is it March yet???????

5 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!.......2007-05-06

My sons love this series! They have quickly read each one, and eagerly wait for the next to be released.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-21

This is the third book in the "fire" trilogy from author Chris D'Lacey. My 10 year old daughter and I loved it! But it really leaves you wanting more and fortunately we learned from his web site that he is working on book number four "Fire Eternal" which should be released soon. These stories are about the legend of the dragons' firetear;the story of Gawain and Gweneviere and the polar bears. There is magic and mystery and adventure. A very good read for kids and parents alike.

4 out of 5 stars Dragons Rule.......2007-03-06

If you would like a dragon tooth for yourself; then you should read Fire Star.

This book is about a man named David trying to write book on the events that happen in the Canadian Artic. After David returned home everyone in the house including the dragons greeted him. In about the middle of the book David returns to the Artic because he receives an urgent message to return. The message contained information about a mysterious comet landing.

This book would have been better if there weren't many characters. There should have been at least three dragons and four main characters. The things I liked about this book that it is full of mysteries. I would recommend this book for people of the ages of ten to fifteen. I rated this book a four stars because of some of the boring parts.

5 out of 5 stars Fire Star was great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-11-08

Do not read unless you have read the book or enjoy spoilers.
Fire Star was great!!! There were a lot of things I did not expect. Who knew that Liz had an ex boyfriend! Or that there is an alien race called the Fain that has no physical form whatsoever! I did not expect Tootega and Dr. Gergstrom would die. Three things I did not expect were that Gwilanna would get frozen in ice, Dr. Bergstrom is a polar bear (I think he was Thoran), and that Bonnington would turn into a tiger. The only part I don't like about this book is that David dies! Once again, Fire Star was great.

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Provocative, appealing and controversial.......2006-08-02

Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.
Islam certainly was no "new religion" in the X-century. That the highly cultivated Al Andaluz ruler Mohammed-I could have been "mirrored" down in time into some myth about the "illiterate" founder of Islam itself is highly speculative. Nevertheless, Fomenko convinces me about the processes that were involved in forging a christian history. Intriguing and controversial as his books are, I recommend them as to rethink our current position in time and space and simply verify what was claimed. It is a "good" book, but not for bedtime reading... Mundus vult decipi, the world wants to be cheated. Fomenko's readers will understand why.

5 out of 5 stars pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.......2006-02-16

Traces of white wine were found in Tutankhamen's tomb however there were no record of white wine in Egypt until the 3rd century AD, 1600 years after the young pharaoh died according to the traditional chronology. http://www.newscientist.com/channel/being-human/mg18925395.400
It can be interpreted as a contribution towards New Chronology theory that pharaohs lived in the 3rd century AD.
