Among the greatest charms of children is their ability to view a simple activity as a magical adventure. Such as a walk in the woods late at night. Jane Yolen captures this wonderment in a book whose charm rises from its simplicity. "It was late one winter night, long past my bedtime, when Pa and I went owling." The two walked through the woods with nothing but hope and each other in a journey that will fascinate many a child. John Schoenherr's illustrations help bring richness to the countryside adventure. The book won the 1988 Caldecott Medal.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kid's book.......2007-04-19

My grandaughter fell in love with this book from the library and Granpa had to buy it for her birthday. It is very well illustrated and well written, Granpa never tires of reading it to her, as she never tires of hearing it. In a market filled with children's books of dubious merit or worth, this is well worth it, to read, to buy, to have in the library of a young reader on her way to a lifetime of reading.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Bedtime Story.......2007-01-05

I ordered this book based on the reviews found on amazon. I was looking for a nature oriented book for my 2 year old son. This has become, by far, one of our favorite family bedtime stories. The illustrations are beautiful. The story is heart warming and real. My husband loves to read it as much as I do. This is a classic in our library and will remain so for many, many years.

5 out of 5 stars Worthy of an Award - a review of "Owl Moon".......2006-11-19

I like Jane Yolen's work - the children do too (lol). But Owl Moon is probably the most poetic of her works that we have read. The word choice and imagery is wonderful; soft and soothing. You can hear the crunch of snow, and feel the biting cold.

Like the others I give it 5 stars, and would add that it makes for a good bed-time book.

Five Stars. Top notch Read-aloud. Artwork is nice, in darker shades than Yolen's other works. Perhaps not quite as nice in detail, but well suited to the story.

5 out of 5 stars Teacher's Favorite.......2006-11-07

I love this book! It has also been loved by my pre K students every year. I always look forward to reading it to my class and I can't say that about a lot of preschool literature. This story takes my suburban kids on an adventure that, unfortunately, many of them will never experience. It's educational, exciting, and a little spooky (but not too much). Don't hesitate to add it to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL WORK FOR THE CHILD IN ALL OF US........2006-10-29

I suppose I am lucky. I still, after more than six decades, have a lot of little boy in me. I still like to take long walks in the woods and dearly love those late evening ones. Of course I must admit that these walks are greatly enhanced when I have the chance to take one of my young grandsons with me. The author has captured, in this stark and simple story, all that is truly good about childhood and all that is good about an older person sharing the wonders around them with a child. Children perceive so much more than we, as adults do, and it is good to be reminded of that from time to time. This books certainly helps jog that memory. The simple text and the simple, yet in their own way complex illustrations mesh perfectly in this work. This is a book that is wonderful to read with a child or, if you still have a lot of child in you, just to slowly read it yourself and savior it. I highly recommend this one.

Roy Eberhardt is the new kid--again. This time around it's Trace Middle School in humid Coconut Grove, Florida. But it's still the same old routine: table by himself at lunch, no real friends, and thick-headed bullies like Dana Matherson pushing him around. But if it wasn't for Dana Matherson mashing his face against the school bus window that one day, he might never have seen the tow-headed running boy. And if he had never seen the running boy, he might never have met tall, tough, bully-beating Beatrice. And if he had never met Beatrice, he might never have discovered the burrowing owls living in the lot on the corner of East Oriole Avenue. And if he had never discovered the owls, he probably would have missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. Apparently, bullies do serve a greater purpose in the scope of the universe. Because if it wasn't for Dana Matherson...

In his first novel for a younger audience, Carl Hiaasen (Basket Case, etc.) plunges readers right into the middle of an ecological mystery, made up of endangered miniature owls, the Mother Paula's All-American Pancake House scheduled to be built over their burrows, and the owls' unlikely allies--three middle school kids determined to beat the screwed-up adult system. Hiaasen's tongue is firmly in cheek as he successfully cuts his slapstick sense of humor down to kid-size. Sure to be a hoot, er, hit with middle school mystery fans. (Ages 10 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

Book Description

Unfortunately, Roy’s first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn’t been sinking his thumbs into Roy’s temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing: he was running away from the school bus, carried no books, and–here’s the odd part–wore no shoes. Sensing a mystery, Roy sets himself on the boy’s trail. The chase introduces him to potty-trained alligators, a fake-fart champion, some burrowing owls, a renegade eco-avenger, and several extremely poisonous snakes with unnaturally sparkling tails.
Roy has most definitely arrived in Carl Hiaasen’s Florida.

4 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Book.......2007-06-04

I have recently read the book Hoot by Carl Hiaasen. Have you ever felt left out, or have you felt like your not where you're supposed to be? This is how Roy Eberhardt, a teenage boy from Montana, feels after moving to Florida. Roy investigates a mystery of the boy running with no shoes on, while he tries to save an owl species. Will life in Florida be looking up for Roy?
The theme or lesson of this book I think was to not let things get in your way. Hoot was very inspiring and it makes you want to help animals in your community. Also, you can literally feel yourself as if you were a character in the setting. I'd advise you to read Hoot because I know you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book but I liked the Tommytown series better.......2007-06-01

I thought this was a great book, but not as good as the Tommytown series. In Tommytown the boys 11 -14 and the girl, Karen 14 years old acted more like their age and the scenes where funny and exciting. But both writers are super! Take a look at Tommytown and The Boys From Tommytown , (I actually did it. I inserted the titles) Anyway you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars give a Hoot about this book:0.......2007-05-22

I thought that this book by Carl Hiaasen was great! This was a very inspirational book about a boy named Roy who moves to Coconut Cove, Florida. He faces many problems like a bully named Dana Matherson, and he meets a girl Beatrice, and her mal treated step- brother. Together the kids try to save mini owls who were going to get hurt, or killed by a building company that was building a new Mother Paula's Pancake House. I would reccomend this book to any one, but especially animal lovers. It is a great novel just like Carl Hiaasens other novels.

5 out of 5 stars Hoot.......2007-05-08

I thought the book Hoot was very good, it was about three teenagers daring to do something that normally kids would never dream of doing, saving little owles and there home from becoming a MaMa's Pancack house. this book is not only inspiring but it also is full of adventure, friendship, betrail, and coming together to help one another.

Book Description

Coryn, Soren, and the Band preside over a new Golden Age of the Great Tree under the subtle influence of the Ember. All seems well, but beneath the prosperity of peace Coryn is tortured by the suspicion that his evil mother, Nyra, is a hagsfiend and that his own blood carries the haggish taint. He wanders afar searching for the truth from hagsfiends themselves - putting the Great Tree in danger. Soren & the Band follow their new king to strange parts to guard him from the consequences of his obsession.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must read this book.......2007-05-07

Golden tree keeps you locked into the story of all the owls of gahoole. I was so caught up I read the whole book in one day!! The whole series is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Read.......2007-04-27

I read this book, and it was fantastic! The Golden Tree is perhaps one of Mrs. Lasky's best books in the entire Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. The Band finally makes a comeback, and Coryn is getting used to being King. Soren's chicks also hatch, though I was disappointed there wasn't much about them in The Golden Tree.

Coryn and the Band go on a journey to discover whether Nyra is really a hagsfiend, and if Coryn's blood is tainted due to his evil heritage, but end up finding out something totally different and possibly even more dangerous. A dark secret from the past is unearthed, and is in Nyra's clutches. Coryn and the Band need to stop Nyra before it's too late, and an important, beloved character nearly dies, and another character does die. I was practically on the edge of my seat with excitement!

Meanwhile, in Coryn's absence, Otulissa is left to deal with the annoying Whiskered Screech Owl, Gemma, and Elyan the Great Gray Owl. Both have become obsessed with the Ember of Hoole, and many Guardians start to follow them. Eventually, even Otulissa is powerless to stop them, and the Guardians' only hope of alerting Coryn lies in one of the most unlikely of owls.

A character mentioned in Book 1, Bess the Boreal Owl, Grimble's favorite daughter, reappears as the Keeper of the Palace of Mists in The Golden Tree. However, Bess, like Soren's daughters, Pellimore, and Eglantine, also has no dialogue, except for flashbacks.

One of the book's greatest surprises was Madame Plonk's amazing personality transformation, from a spoiled, fat old singer to a warrior gadfeather. There are also hints at new romances, and a brand-new owl kingdom. I can't wait for The River of Wind to come out!

The Golden Tree is a must-read for any fantasy lover!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-02-11

There was a nearly six-month lapse between "To Be a King" and "The Golden Tree," and I was not disappointed by this 12th installment of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series.

A brief summary: The Great Ga'Hoole Tree is glowing gold from the Ember of Hoole's influence, and the Island of Hoole has entered a state of perpetual summer. But after King Coryn and the Band leave the tree, Otulissa soon discovers that all that's gold is not necessarily good. The Ember enthralls the owls of Ga'Hoole, and many of them begin to act strangely, especially Gemma the Whiskered Screech Owl and Elyan the Great Gray Owl. When this strange behavior goes too far, it becomes clear that someone must get word out to the king and the Band.

"The Golden Tree" is suspenseful, and interlaced with the excitement and quality I've long since come to expect of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series. Fans of the books will not be disappointed, and the cliffhanger at the end will leave them looking forward to Book 13, "The River of Wind," set for release by July 1st. All in all, a fantastic read!

5 out of 5 stars The Golden Tree Reviewed By: Blythe&Basha&Bell.......2007-02-08

I LOVED LOVED LOVED the Golden Tree!! It was a big relief after the three legends. I had missed the original characters from books 1-6 (Soren, Gylfie, Twilight, Digger, & Otulissa) and the character from books 7-8 (Coryn/Nyroc) In this book, they make a full comback. Well, the book opens with Soren and the Band playing in the wind currents near the Great Tree, which for some time had retained a summer-like golden glow, which Soren found slightly unnerving. Coryn, however, is in his own hollow brooding over the ember with his firesight. He has, ever since reading the first legend, been questioning his lineage, for he suspected Nyra, his mother, to be a hagsfiend, which would mean his own blood carried the haggish taint. Well, in the middle of the first chapter, we finally (FINALLY) find out that Soren's eggs had (have?) hatched and his daughters names are Sebastiana (Basha for short), Blythe, and Bell. They are not in this book dialogue wise, and neither are Pelli and Eglantine. I dont want to give anything away, but one of my favourite chapters was The Book, The Battle, & The Band. Let me point out, this book would be rather confusing for someone who had nver read any Ga'Hoole book or even someone who had read all except for the Legends (9, 10, 11). It contains a lot of references from the Legends and reverts back to a lot of Coryn's past aquantices from books 7 and 8. Like the web-reading rabbit with no name, Gyllbane, her son Cody, Hamish, Styngyll and Slynella. The book ends kind of on a cliffie, and sets the stage for book 13 - The River of Wind, which comes out July 1st, 2007. I will end this review by saying this -- its good to have the Band back!!

The bay owls came out of their house,
and they sat on the tree and waited.
A big branch for Sarah, a small branch for Percy,
and an old piece of ivy for Bill.

When three baby owls awake one night to find their mother gone, they can't help but wonder where she is. Stunning illustrations from unique and striking perspectives capture the owls as they worry about their mother: What is she doing? When will she be back? What scary things move all around them? Not surprisingly, a joyous flapping and dancing and bouncing greets her return, lending a celebratory tone to the ending of this comforting tale. Never has the plight of young ones who miss their mother been so simply told or so beautifully rendered.

1 out of 5 stars What is all the hype about?.......2007-05-25

Our family did not like this book. The illustrations are dark and really scary looking (I understand owls are active at night, but it could have been different...) Story is kind of annoying with
    "...", said Percy
    "...", said Sarah
    "...", said Bill.
We just did not get what all the hype was about and expected SO MUCH better with all the 5-star reviews that this book had. Pretty disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars "I WANT MY MOMMY!", SAID BILL........2007-04-24

I purchased this book for my daughter when she was less than 2 years old. We read it every night for years.

It is such a delightful book about three young owls, Sarah, Percy and Bill who wake in the night to find their mommy GONE!. As they wait for her to return, they sat and they though (all owls think alot) about what could happen to her. All of a sudden, she swooped through the trees to the three owl babies. Sarah, Percy and Bill were so excited. Their owl mommy tells them, "you knew I'd come back".

I love to give this wonderful book as gifts. It was so well written by Martin Waddell and the illustrations by Patrick Benson are beautiful. This is a keeper!

It's my routine to buy the gift set - boardbook with plush toy if it's available because I can read the book while my child is holding the toy listen to the story.
The story is simple, fun and age appropriate. I certainly hope I can find more book + toy gift set, so that we can have a good collection of reading and playing material.

    5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming.......2007-03-19

Owl Babies is a wonderful story and the illustrations are beautiful. My granddaughter and I loved it!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Soooooooo Cute!.......2007-03-08

This little story is so beuatifully draw and the owls are especially expressive! It is a cute little story about three baby owls who awake to find that mother is not in the nest. Each scene has the owl babies dialoging in birth order. I particularly enjoyed the littlest owl who's only dialog is a woeful, "I want my mommy." However, he gets the last line in the book!

I made a CD recording of myself reading this book outloud, attached it to the inside cover, and gifted the set to my six year old Neice who lives four states away. She LOVES it!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful gluten free cooking.......2007-01-06

We love Bette Hagman's cookbooks. My mom bought her first one years ago, and it made a huge difference in the quality of her recipes. When I want a new cookbook for gluten free foods, I look for Bette's offerings first.

5 out of 5 stars the bible on GF cooking.......2006-07-12

This is the bible when it comes to baking gluten-free. Long ago, before the Internet was publicly available, people had to find information anyway they could on living GF and coeliac disease. When this book was first published in the early to mid-1990s, I thought I had died and gone to heaven. Before this book, I had a few recipes from the Celiac Society of America (CSA) and the Gluten-Intolerance Group (GIG), and a couple of really bad cookbooks from the UK (which usually relied on GF flour (wheat flour with the gluten washed) that wasn't readily available in the US and didn't bake all that well. The recipes in all of Bette Hagman's books are great -- staples that you longed for. Lentil chocolate cake -- even the non-coeliacs will want some!

5 out of 5 stars The original and still the most comprehensive.......2006-07-10

I have celiac disease, which is essentially an allergy to wheat protein, and I've been GF for 5 years now. (Why does that sound like I'm at an AA meeting?) Bette Hagman's books are the first couple of books that I got, and they're pretty good. *GFG-Revised* is a really great book with a lot of the staples that you need in there. The initial couple of chapters about what you can and can't eat are worth the price of the book (sure, you can't have wheat, rye, or barley, but how about quinoa, teff, spelt, or millet?) (Answers: yes, yes, no, yes.) but the recipes are what you should buy it for. The "Revised" edition has been updated with the new "four bean flour" blend.

    My favorites:

Corn muffins - p86 - uses a polenta technique to be utterly different than cornbread
    Pumpkin bread - p76 - fabulous.
Sandwich bread - p55 - the closest thing to, well, you know.
Muffins - p77 - done in less than an hour and tasty-tasty-tasty.

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not exactly "gourmet"..........2006-05-23

I was disappointed in this book. I guess I expected more than meatloaf, cheese balls, tuna casserole and beef stroganoff...

There are a few gems, but overall, not what I would consider "gourmet". Ninety percent of these recipes I never would have eaten before being diagnosed and I'm certainly not going to eat them now...

    4 out of 5 stars Eat Healthy........2006-02-24

I recently became intolerant to Gluten. My doctor ran out of intructions to patients for Gluten free diet. I went to Google, which reffered me to your link to Gluten free diet books.
I got more than I required and I am happy with the book.

    Book Description

A place of salmon runs, ancient totems, and a  lesson a young vicar must learn....

Amid  the grandeur of the remote Pacific Northwest stands  Kingcome, a village so ancient that, according to  Kwakiutl myth, it was founded by the two brothers  left on earth after the great flood. The Native  Americans who still live there call it Quee, a place  of such incredible natural richness that hunting  and fishing remain primary food sources. But the  old culture of totems and potlatch is being replaces  by a new culture of prefab housing and alcoholism.  Kingcome's younger generation is disenchanted and  alienated from its heritage. And now, coming  upriver is a young vicar, Mark Brian, on a journey of  discovery that can teach him -- and us -- about  life, death, and the transforming power of love.

I ordered this recently because I passed the copy I purchased in 1975 to my grandaughter , who has asked me if she can keep it.Of course I said "Yes" , but find I really miss having a copy in the house.
Story takes you out of the hubbub and into the essentials.

    5 out of 5 stars The Owl..........2007-01-21

What does one do for a friend who has only a year or two to live? Do you coddle him or challenge him? That's the premise of I Heard the Owl Call My Name. The bishop who is faced with this question, chooses to send his young ill vicar off to the hardest and most remote parish, a small village in British Columbia. The book covers the remaining months of the vicar's life without dwelling on his situation.

Instead, the book focuses on how the vicar learns the culture of the Kwakiutl and likewise how the Kwakiutl begin to slowly accept that the outside world is beginning to seep into their culture as their children seek education outside of the village.

I Heard the Owl Call My Name is a tender story about two cultures learning from each other as seen through the eyes of a young vicar sent to Kingcome, a village in the Pacific Northwest. It's one of the few books where neither culture is favored in how they are portrayed. Both have their good bits and their bad bits. Characters have good days and bad days and are allowed to grow into well rounded individuals.

This is an unforgettable book. I first read it the early '80's and it is still poignant in my memory. It includes insight into pastoral skills and rapport, and, perhaps most importantly, an open and sensitive look into death and dying. I bought it for a friend, who has just lost her best friend, and who remembered reading the book 17 years ago.

    Book Description

There is something evil in the air. Fourteen-year-old Bobby senses it. Who is that man he saw arguing with his pretty new English teacher? And what was the real reason she missed school for days afterward? Bobby knows he should mind his own business, but times are confusing. World War II has just ended and the world is changing. Bobby's world, especially. There's his relationship with Joanie, for one—why does being her friend feel awkward all of a sudden? And then there are his buddies, the junior varsity Edenville Owls—a group of basketball players in need of a leader. Can they help each other off the court as well as they can on it? They will need to. Something evil is in the air.

Robert B. Parker brings the same powerful storyline and spare, atmospheric prose to his first novel for young readers that he does to his New York Times best selling Spenser novels. A perfect fit.

4 out of 5 stars A Good story for Young Adults........2007-05-18

Over the past two months my 13 year old son has been on a reading streak. He finished Carl Hiassen's, Hoot and Flush (which were given to me by him for my reading and comments) and now he has finished reading Robert B. Parker, "Edenville Owls". For some reason he is not a big Harry Potter fan. Anyway, again, with an outstretched hand he asked me to read Mr. Parker's novel and according to my son he did enjoyed the book, but not nearly as well as he enjoyed the Tommytown and The Boys From Tommytown novels by Robert L. Saunders, or Hoot by Carl Hiassen. If you are looking for a challenging read for your young son or daughter, I encourage you to take a look at these novels.

His overall disappointment was that in the novel "Edenville Owls", he didn't feel the characters were realistic and the author should have spent more time developing the main character, Bobby Murphy, to act like a 14 year old instead of a twenty year old. (Struck me as a valid point.) I smiled and then read the book over the next 3 days.

I've read several of Mr. Parker's novels. I have always enjoyed his earlier novels but I have been disappointed in several of his novels that he has released over the past year. So, I'm hoping that I won't be disappointed in this read, although I'm excited that Mr. Parker is forging his writing skills into the young adult book arena.

First, the title relates to the main character, 14-year-old, Bobby Murphy JV basketball team the Edenville Owls during the mid 1940's. Murphy is a self-confident young man and ends up the leader of the basketball team. But Bobby is also trying to understand the changes in his personality and desires. He feels like he is going down a twisted path of constant changes. Once, he gave no thought to the appearance of Joanie's body and her pretty face. Once, he gave no thought to whether she paid any attention to him. Now he felt he wanted her acceptance. If she rejected him it would drive him crazy. The story moves Bobby into his friendship with Joanie, unfortunately for Bobby that friendship drives a wedge between himself and his best friend, Nick. UMMM. Reminds me of a familiar situation.

The story moves into another theme that involves Miss Delaney, a young teacher with hidden secrets. At school Bobby stumbles on a man in a heated argument with Miss Delaney. Also, in that moment the man is slapped by Miss Delaney. He searches for answers from Miss Delaney, but she rejects his pleas. His curiosity is not satisfied and he decides to unravel this mystery of the man and the motivation and connection between the man and Miss Delaney.

In summary, the author proved that his writing skills are fertile enough to create an impressive novel, and certainly a novel worthy of the attention of young adults. The one fault I had was the telling of three separate stories; none of them seemed to get the attention they deserve in a novel that is otherwise a decent read.

I am certainly excited that known authors are getting involved in the young adult book market. Mother's like me can only benefit from their exceptional writing, and storytelling experience.

3 out of 5 stars Some polished Parker prose for the youth market.......2007-05-11

I enjoyed the novel "Edenville Owls", Robert Parker's first official novel for younger readers. The book actually reads like a regular Robert Parker thriller, only the sex, violence and profanity is turned down, and the characters are mainly all kids. One thing I did find strange is that Mr. Parker seemed to be a bit reluctant to have younger readers see his characters placed in truly dangerous situations (being subjected to a few nasty verbal threats was about the worst the kids had to endure), yet there's quite a bit of ugly language on the part of the racist minister who runs a white supremicist youth group. I don't think there was anything wrong with that- younger readers can probably handle (and benefit from) a glimpse at the seamier aspects of life- but kids probably would have found the story a little more gripping if there was more actual danger on display. Still, the book was a good, fun, fast read, and I'll likely pick up the next adventure featuring Bobby, Joanie, and the rest of the "Owls" gang. But not until I read another one of Mr. Parker's reliably snappy regular offerings.

    3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-04-29

I'm looking forward to future novels about the young detective. This wasn't so bad. I thought it was too technical especially when it refer to history about sports greats. I would like more mystery in his future novels and less history. But the ending was great.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Starter for Parker.......2007-04-29

Because Robert B. Parker's name was above the title, I ordered the book even though it was destined for young adults. How can a Parker book not be a great read? How many adults did I know that were reading and salivating over Harry Potter? I read the book in two sittings and was not surprised at the dialogue and textures that Parker placed on each page. My nephew is still a tad young for this book but in a year perhaps not. And if he likes this (and he'd be a fool not to) then Edenville Owls will be a great introduction to Robert B. Parker's writing style that is comfortable and entertaining. Once that occurs, then my nephew will enter the worlds of Spenser, Jesse Stone, Sunny Randall, Burke, Everett Hitch, Virgil Cole and Wyatt Earp. At that point, Power Rangers and Pokemon cards will remain on his shelves replaced by what is sometimes called the theatre of the mind. Thank you Dr. Parker. And a book about Spenser's first case as a detective after leaving the DA's office would be greatly appreciated. I highly recommend Edenville Owls for its textured plotting and finely drawn characters. The traditional themes are there and the ending is not blown all out of logic and proportion. Worth the price. Hopefully it will find its way into school libraries across the country.

5 out of 5 stars Bobby Murphy, Boy Detective.......2007-04-25

Spenser fans everywhere are going to love this book. Although Spenser was raised by his father and uncles in Laramie, Wyoming, 14-year-old Bobby Murphy almost comes closer to the childhood many longtime fans envisioned for Robert B. Parker's signature character.

Bobby Murphy is a wonderful, though idealistic, protagonist. He's more or less the brains and eventual leader of a five-man junior varsity basketball team called the Edenville Owls. They ended up calling themselves that because the only uniforms they could find were all yellow. He's on the cusp of young adulthood, just starting to notice the finer intracacies of the world: such as the opposite sex and problems in the adult arena that normally stay behind closed doors.

After his last teacher was removed from the school, Bobby and his class got a new teacher: Miss Delaney. Miss Delaney is young and beautiful, the perfect teacher for a young boy on his way to becoming a man to fall in love with.

However, Miss Delaney also apparently has some dark secrets. While in detention, Bobby and one of his friends sees Miss Delaney arguing with a man. After a heated exchange, Miss Delaney slaps the man. Bobby shouts at the man to leave her alone, then he and his buddy charge to the rescue but are made to return to detention. Later Miss Delaney asks Bobby to forget he ever saw anything.

In just those few moments, Bobby's plunged into a mystery that will tear away a lot of his remaining innocence as he pursues the truth of who the man is and exactly what's going on.

Three main storylines weave throughout the book: the mystery involving Miss Delaney, Bobby's work to bring his basketball team to the state tournament, and his evolving relationship with Joanie, a girl he becomes friends with that eventually comes between him and Nick, one of his best friends. Any one of the stories would be enough to keep a reader turning pages. That they're all together and complement each other well is just excellent writing.

Parker is going to take a lot of heat over Bobby, though. Bobby THINKS like Spenser. He ACTS like Spenser. And both characters are troubled over the same vagaries of life. But these are the themes that Parker constantly writes about.

Readers familiar with Parker's work are going to find a lot of familiar ground here, though altered somewhat because the story is set in the 1940s and Parker does, for the most part, stay within the conventions of his youthful heroes. However, argument can be made that the Hardy Boys were taking on much more dangerous assignments on a regular basis.

The fact that World War II was only an eyeblink ago in the story's setting is important. The villains are made more menacing because of that. And Parker is given a freer rein to talk about wickedness. Strangely enough, some of that wickedness is still in our world.

The writing is as pure and economical as always. There's an innocence about Bobby that is endearing, but at the same time he comes across as older than his 14 years. Parker weaves his plotlines effortlessly and readers will cruise through this one. More than that, this is a book that adults and young readers can share and both enjoy. I've handed off my copy to my 18-year-old, whom I've also introduced to Parker's work, as well as Crais's and other writers.

I envy the young readers who will find this book. This will be their FIRST Robert B. Parker novel and they'll find SO many more books waiting for them as they grow up. Hopefully Parker will find time in his busy schedule to pen another Bobby Murphy book.

A fun read, especially if yoiu're a sports fan. I read it in search of things that would help my own ability as a coach in my company. Much of it is light stuff but the easy read makes it fun nonetheless and there are few golden nuggets laced throughout the book.

I have never read a more inspirational book in my life. Before, I never realized how much other people have struggled the way I have in life, and have actually succeeded! It was great for me to see that and to know that there are other people in the world with great adversity in their life and have come out on top due to hard work and great leadership. This book isn't for just sports fans, it's for all who are looking for great advice in the real world and need a little tap on the back saying that everything is and will be okay! This book is great for all ages and for any occupation!

    5 out of 5 stars A great inspirational source.......2007-01-17

I purchased this book while I was searching for a "golden nugget" for a speech I was preparing for high school students. What I found was an entire gold mine of inspirational quotes and ideas! I truly enjoyed this book, and found many bits and pieces that I will share with others. I've already purchased a gift copy, and have shared mine with several others. I would highly recommend "How To Succeed In The Game of Life" to high school and college coaches, teachers, counselors, ministers, and parents....anyone who is in the business of working with young people and advising them as they navigate the difficult road to their future. There's plenty within for the "older folks" who need to be re-inspired in their own lives as well.

    4 out of 5 stars A Well-written Book, Some Errors.......2007-04-27

I liked To Be A King, but I didn't love it. In the copy I got, there were quite a few errors, and Mrs. Lasky didn't tie up all of the loose ends as effectively as in her previous books.

The things I liked about this book in particular were the creative new characters, a new romance, and Hoole's transition from being a chick to an adult, from being a follower to a leader. Part of the book centers on the forces of evil (Pleek, Ygryk, Kreeth, and Lutta, Pleek and Ygryk's "daughter"), while the other part centers on the newly formed Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

In this book, the Guardians of Ga'Hoole are founded, and the final battle for the N'rythghar is waged. While King Hoole reigns over the S'rthgahr, chaos runs rampant in the N'rythghar. Lord Arrin is ammassing an army for a final invasion, while kraals, Ullryck's hagsfiend troops, and a mad upstart owl's forces fight for the spoils. King Hoole must also form an army before Short Light, or lose all hope of ever reclaiming his father's throne. Hoole gains new allies: Strix Strumajen the Spotted Owl, Sir Bors the Barn Owl, Sir Tobyfor the Northern Hawk Owl, Lord Rathnik the Snowy Owl, and many others.

New, dark forces also lurk, preparing to strike and steal the Ember of Hoole: the archfiend Kreeth, and the changeling bird Lutta. Lutta transforms into Emerilla, Strix Strumajen's lost daughter, in order to gain Hoole's trust and steal the Ember. But Lutta finds something much more than just the Ember...

There are also deaths in To Be A King, but nothing too disappointing. Basically, the entire book explains how the Guardians of Ga'Hoole came to be.

But there were some problems in the book. Some parts were poorly edited, and had many errors. At the end, it was unclear whether or how Lord Arrin, Ullryck, and Shadyk were defeated and/or killed. Sure, Hoole and the Guardians triumphed, but the whole battle was mostly vague.

Other than that, To Be A King is a great ending for the Legends triolgy and provides some insight on Book 12, The Golden Tree. I would reccommend this book to fantasy lovers.

5 out of 5 stars GUARDIANS OF GAHOOLE.......2007-02-21

I BOUGHT THE BOOKS BY KATHRYN LASKY FOR MY FOURTEEN YEAR OLD GRANDAUGHTER. THE FIRST ONE WAS ON HER BOOK LIST FOR SUMMER READING. AS SOON AS SHE BEGAN TO READ IT SHE ASKED IF THERE WERE MORE BY THE SAME AUTHOR. AFTER I FOUND ALL THE OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES I ORDERED ALL OF THEM FOR HER CHRISTMAS PRESENT THAT YEAR. SHE SHARES THEM WITH HER COUSINS BOTH BOYS AND GIRLS. THE STORIES ARE INTERESTING, EXCITING AND WELL WRITTEN.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-01-18

My son has read this entire series (so far) and he just LOVES it! All of the books have kept him riveted!

    5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-01-10

In To Be a King, Hoole must fight against the odds in a battle in which enemy war lords are amassing armies of hagsfeinds and owls. A mad owl named Shadyk is amassing an army of young hagsfeinds, as is a hagsfeind named Ullryk, Lord Arinn's assasin. In the book, Hoole must decide to use the magic of the ember to restore N'yrthghar.

It is a very thrilling book in the series of Guardians of Ga'hoole.

    5 out of 5 stars Guardians of Ga'hoole series.......2007-01-04

I began to buy Kathryn Lasky's "Guardians" series for my 12 year old granddaughter trying to find something to spark her interest in reading. She really did not read for pleasure very much. This series and the "Warriors" series written by Erin Hunter have made a reader out of her. She can't wait until the next books come out! I am very thankful for this because I love books and the children today have so much TV and computer things to do, lots of them do not take time to read books.
