My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Would you be excited if you had a tree house that could travel through time? That's what happens to 8 year-old Jack and 7 year-old Annie in the book Tigers at Twilight #19 by Mary Pope Osborne. So far this is the best book I read in the series because a tiger gets stuck in a bear trap and the kids try to rescue it. Then, the tiger is about to attack them, but I'm not saying any more. You should read the book to find out what happens.

This may be the ultimate cat book for some but I didn't appreciate the overload of Frenchisms, and the dwelling on mistreatment of cats all through their history. It was an informative piece of work but I found it fairly rough going.

Here we go again.......2006-11-03

If you've read others of Shah's book, The House of the Tiger King will feel both familiar and a little different. Familiar in so far as he writes well, puts himself in unusual predicaments and circles around arcane knowledge without drowning you in the stuff. However, the House of the Tiger King finds him transformed into a more obsessive, more punishing individual. Much of this, of course, drives the story. Despite the things that lighten the story of harsh adventure in the Peruvian jungles (some of which we could do without, such as the tiring references to Pot Noodles), this is a darker tale than usual. The worry is that Shah having written his way around the world, pushing himself further and further for his stories, is not going to run out of stories to write about, but a way in which to write them. He seems to have backed himself into a corner in this one, the intrepid, manic voyager, forgetful of wife and child, driven by obsession. So when the next book comes out, do we find that the obsession was just manufactured for the sake of the book, or can he perform a magician's trick and reinvent himself again?

Excellent artwork.......2006-08-25

I used to think of John Berkey as just a sci-fi artist. But after viewing this book its clear Berkey is quite simply an excellent artist on all levels. What I find masterful about his work is that upon close viewing you see that he uses simple brush strokes for his approach. Yet, when viewed from a distance his art appears as detailed as any photograph I've seen. This is what it means to be a true artist: Being able to convey a clearly conceived and well-executed idea while maintaining an original sense of style and technique. Mr Berkey's work should be viewed by all, whether sci-fi fan or not.

For those of you who were inspired by John Berkey's fantastic visions of the future decades ago, you will find continued inspiration in Jane Frank's new book, The Art of John Berkey. This book complements the earlier Painted Space book well, but stands on its own as a serious work about John Berkey. Several pages of autobiographical notes from Mr. Berkey himself followed by several chapters chronicling the many phases of Berkey's remarkable career. Back before computers, Berkey mastered the brush, inferring technological complexity with only minimal strokes in a way few other artists can. He ranks high along with legendary futurist artists like Syd Mead and Ralph McQuarrie. The book is beautifully printed, with lush colorful pages that bring Berkey's paintings to life. I recommend you purchase this book-it will take you on a fantastical journey you will want to come back to time and again.

Tigers are being killed all over the world. I believe that people should read this book to learn about this beautiful animal.
There are 36 species of cats. In my opinion tigers are the fearsest of them all. Tigers were once everywhere, ranges in southern and eastern Asia. They also are in habitats such as rain forest, mangroves, scrubs, thorn forest, tall grass areas, riverbanks, and temperate forest, in east Russia.
Siberian tigers are believed to be the largest of tigers. There are about 450 of them in habitats like deciduous forest. There were about 40,000 Bengal tigers that roamed India nearly a century ago. Now, only 4,000 remain mainly because of poaching. How could this happen to such a beautiful animal? It would be amazing to watch a tiger running gracefully through the African plains. But remember this, a tiger can turn into a killing machine in one blink. In ancient China tigers were considered regal and useful at sometimes. They were sometimes a link between human and spirit, and to bring spirits from the grave. In other times a tiger and a dragon in pieces of artwork, they would use a tiger and a dragon together representing two great forces of nature. A sketch of a roaring tiger means fury and fighting. In Taoism the tiger represents yin (evil). The dragon represents yang (good).
In our quickly changing society the endangered tiger reflects real and fictional qualities of life. There are many amazing things about tigers. Tigers might be dangerous but they have amazing grace, great power and mystery, and stealth. This gorgeous creature is endangered and so close to extinction. They might be close, but it's their strong feelings that give them the strength to go on. That's why the tiger is the real KING OF THE JUNGLE!!!

THIS IS THE BEST TIGER BOOK I'VE EVER READ(so far)! The photos are classic, the information is great, and you can most certainly tell that the writers and photographers put a ton or two of effort into it. If you like tigers(like many do)I suggest you buy this book. Oh and tigers come only a couple of inches away from being tied on my love scale with my favorite animal, the lion, so it makes this book all the better! Anyway, I love it to pieces, and you will too! Get it while it's fresh, off this site, or in any book or nature store!

Great Intro to Tiger Conservation.......2004-08-29

Dr. Ullas Karanth is one of the most respected conservation biologists working to save the tiger from extinction in the wild. In this book, Dr. Karanth presents interesting information regarding the tiger's place in ancient culture, its biology, evolution and behavior. The book ends with the best discussion I have ever seen on the past and future of tiger conservation throughout the world, particularly in India and Nepal which contain most of the world's tigers in the wild.

The book is written with a view towards educating the INTELLIGENT layman about the main threats to tigers and the methods of tiger conservation. The text is not watered down for the benefit of those who merely wish to have a book that looks pretty; however, it is a pleasure to read, since Dr. Karanth's clarity of thought and writing are apparent throughout.

The author summarizes the research of other biologists (Drs. George Schaller, John Seidensticker, Mel Sunquist) and presents his own work on the monitoring of tigers and their prey. One learns how the densities of the tiger's ungulate prey species in a given area can be estimated. Since tiger numbers are positively correlated with the numbers of the cat's ungulate prey, this provides biologists with methods of estimating the number of tigers in a given area. For accurate counts, the author proposes the use of remote cameras to photograph tigers, which can be uniquely identified by their stripe markings. This "camera trapping" approach, as it is called, can be combined with powerful statistical methods to estimate the proportion of tigers in the population that were actually captured by the cameras, thus giving a total count of tigers in the sampled area.

Fascinating glimpses of tiger behavior are presented through the results of fieldwork in the Kanha and Nagarahole National Parks (India) and Chitwan National Park (Nepal) by the eminent scientists mentioned above. Much of what is known to science regarding tiger behavior and ecology is the result of these systematic studies. The methods and goals of modern field biology are carefully distinguished from the subjective impressions recorded by hunter-naturalists in the first half of the last century.

In an age when the media is choked with enormous amounts of misleading information, it is refreshing to find a book that gives sound scientific information in a clear and precise fashion. Dr. Karanth points out, for example, that while the much - publicized poaching of tigers for body parts is undoubtedly harmful, the poaching of the tiger's ungulate prey is likely to be equally, or more, disastrous. An especially attractive feature of the book is the pains the author takes to refute age-old and popular myths about tigers. For example, many people believe that white tigers are a separate race that need to be conserved (they are merely genetic mutants), or that keeping tigers in captivity by private citizens somehow contributes to tiger conservation (this is a colossal delusion).

As another reviewer notes, Dr. Karanth's criticism of the concept of 'sustainable use' of tiger habitats by humans is interesting. This fashionable concept, so dear to social activists who know little and care less about tiger conservation, cannot be applied to tiger range countries like India. This is because the number of potential consumers of products from tiger habitats is out of all proportion to the available resource base. Sacrificing, on the altar of 'sustainable use', the few protected areas where breeding tigresses still thrive can only spell doom for the species.

Dr. Karanth ends the book on an optimistic note: given the tiger's history of survival under extremely adverse conditions, there is a hope for this magnificent King of Cats if rational action, based on sound science, is applied to tiger conservation. The deep sense of hopelessness about the fate of wild tigers that one often comes across in the media is useless at best and counter-productive at worst. The first thing that concerned people should do if their efforts are not to be downright harmful to the survival prospects of tigers is to get informed before intervening. This book is a splendid attempt to provide such information.

Biggest of all Cats.......2002-07-23

Of the making of coffee-table books about tigers there seems to be no end. Text traditionally hasn't mattered much; tigers are so alluring that most book buyers are content just to gaze at pictures of them.

The Way of the Tigers is different. Author K.Ullas Karanth is a Wildlife Conservation Society biologist and perhaps India's leading authority on tigers. Karanth explains what is- and is not true about these secretive big cats to which he has devoted the past 21 years. He outlines as well what will be asked of all of us if tigers are not to disappear from the wild.

The latest information is here, from tiger genetics to the little understood but indispensable role basic biology must play in the future if the success or failure of tiger management is to be assessed. The author has little patience with romantics who insist that tigers and a growing human population can harmoniously share the same shrinking forests. If tigers are to survive, he believes, the course is clear: "establishing protected reserves and buffering them with compatible land use; delinking tiger habitats from the forces of market-driven commerce; (and) enlisting sufficient public support for tigers both locally and globally to ensure these goals are met". Everyone, everywhere, he writes, can find a part to play in that effort.

Meanwhile he urges us to resist the pessimism that can be fatal to the cause. Things looked bad for the tiger in the 1970s, too, Karanth reminds us. But in India, at least, thanks to political will, private resolve, and the commitment of a handful of forest officials, the tiger's slide toward extinction was halted-even reversed for a time. "If wild tigers do not survive the twenty-first century", the author concludes, "it will largely be because we, the current crop of tiger conservationists, have lost this sense of purpose, clarity of thinking, and sense of hope. By failing to inspire the next generation....the present day doomsayers may be making self fulfilling prophesies".

K.Ullas Karanth, one of India's best known tiger specialists asks and then goes on to convincingly make a case for tiger conservation and why he believes that wild tigers can survive. A conservation Zoologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society, the author has studied wild tiger for over 15 years.

In The Way of the Tigers, the author emphasizes why scientific studies are essential for the process of tiger conservation. The book is informative and takes the reader into the world of tigers. Karanth discusses the rationale behind saving tigers and why the primary challenge before us today is to channel the human fascination for the tiger to positive conservation action.

Karanth looks at the methods and results of scientific work such as radio-tracking and other methods used to count wild tigers. He also explains the evolution of tigers, their distribution and how humans have interacted with tigers since prehistoric times. He gives you an overview of the natural habitats, prey species, and behavior and biological needs of tigers and also delves into how modern science has helped replace traditional myths on tigers. The book also discusses the reasons why tiger populations are in decline-the main socio-economic threats to the tiger - habitat destruction for agriculture, development projects, exploitation of forest produce and hunting and poaching.

He summarizes conservation movement in India and efforts made so far to save the tiger providing a compelling and optimistic raison d'etre on why he believes that the tiger can be saved. He states that "wild tigers can survive the 21st century if we can temper our compassion for the animal with knowledge and pragmatism". An interesting and enlightening book on the crucial issue of tiger conservation.

I am now 12 and in 6th grade and i say these books are great.I recomend these for kids instresed in science or the world.I am currenly reading Stephen Hawking's " A breif History of time" which is a great and understandable book for anyone. These books inspied me to be a Theoretical Quantum physicist. it got me into the fasinating subject of time travel and Unifeild Feild theory.The boottm line is these books are filles with adventure and fun.

My Review of Ghost Town at Sundown.......2002-03-12

Since I like scary stories, I really, really liked this one. The best part was when they heard a ghost playing the piano. The ghost's name is Lonesome Luke.

Fins Up for Dolphins at Daybreak.......2001-10-21

My name is Grant. I am in third grade. Last week I read DOLPHINS AT DAYBREAK because it looked like a really exciting book. DOLPHINS is my favorite Magic Treehouse book so far. I have already read VIKING SHIPS AT SUNRISE and CIVIL WAR ON SUNDAY. I would give all of the Magic Treehouse books I have read 5 stars, but I like DOLPHINS best because I love dolphins and the submarine adventure was really exciting!!!

Here's a bit of what happened: Annie was curious about the mini-submarine and talked Jack into exploring it. Inside the sub Annie pushed the wrong button and it started to go down to the bottom of the sea. They saw an Octopus, which started to grab the submarine...they also saw a hammerhead shark...

That's all I will tell you or it will spoil the story for you.

Night of the Ninjas.......2001-10-11

Night of the Ninjas is easy to read with short chapters and pictures. This book can hold the interest of children from 8 on up. The characters are fun and children can relate to them. The characters are a brother and sister, so this book will be of interest to either boys or girls. I have found that the Magic Tree House Books make children want to learn more about history.

Wonderful Adventure for Kids in early Elementary years.......2001-07-30

My children loved all 3 of these adventures, which we listened to in the car on a trip via the audiotape version. They laughed at the adventures of the kids, learning as we went about Pirates, Dinosaurs, and Knights. These are written with "old style" magic -- no darkness or evil overtones -- and my kids responded to it beautifully, requesting additional versions for later trips. My husband and I didn't suffer much either. I strongly recommend this collection for those who have early elementary kids (mine are 6 and 8 years old), whom they don't think are ready for Harry Potter and some of that ilk.
