If You Give a Child a Good Book..........2007-05-24

...he/she will enjoy it for years. I purchased this book after a co-worker highly recommended it. My child was an infant at the time, and although the book has a recommended age range of 4 to 8, I read it to her anyway. It was of course over her head, but I highly enjoyed the story myself - which is almost as important as the child enjoying the book, right? My girl is now approaching three years old and she enjoys the book as much as I do. It's fun to follow the story as the simple act of giving a mouse a cookie escalates into an endless cycle of giving the mouse other things he requires as a result of the cookie gift. It's a silly, lighthearted tale and the illustrations are fun. If You Give a Mouse a Cookie will surely be a family favorite for years to come, and I'm glad I purchased the hardcover version since it's likely to be passed down to the next generation.

Very enjoyable story.......2007-05-15

I bought this for my 2 1/2 yr. old grandson and was immediately his favorite book to read at bedtime. My daughter is now having to read it to him 2-3 times before it is lights out. In fact, even yesterday during the day, he wanted it read to him. It is a great book.

IF You Give A Mouse A Cookie is wonderful book. It talks about what the mouse like to do in the story. what he likes to do is ask for cookies and milke , and he likes to keep on asking for things. I like this book so much and I hope you too.

A Picture Book That Would Be Good, Even Without Pictures.......2007-04-01

It's all just one short joke, but its amusing. Give a mouse a cookie, and you'll be stuck in an infinite loop of mouse pampering. Too bad the last page doesn't have "DON'T GIVE COOKIES TO MICE!" in real big neon letters.

This is the cutest book to read to children of all ages. It is a great read for an adult. If you went to a college class you will certainly appreciate how this little mouse attends the college classes. It also comes with a CD.You will love this book. I highly recommed it.

My boys chose this book at the library, and I purchased it because it is so touching and, yes, inspiring! The story teaches the importance of perseverance, as Mahalia works toward her Bachelor of Science. My 5-year-old loved it. A bit long to hold my 3-year-old's attention, but he enjoyed the rhyme scheme, and I am sure he will enjoy the entire book when he is a bit older. The illustrations are beautiful, as well. This is a book I will save for my grandchildren!

Great book, for those who love words.......2007-06-27

This book was so much fun to read as adult, even though it is written for a younger audience. The author's use of obscure and advanced vocabulary is a great opportunity to learn new words and to be entertained at the same time. I read the book last year after I was introduced to it by the professor of the reading class that I was taking. I love how the author uses irony, personification of animals, and directly addressing the reading throughout the book. The story has great themes that apply to all ages and are timeless. It was also full of content that would make it an interesting and lighthearted way to open the door to discussions with children on a variety of topics including: individuality, redemption, and child abuse and neglect. It is a rich story full of unique and largely likeable characters. It is set in a castle that may feel familiar, but is unique for many reasons. The extended length of the title is also another point of interest to me. If you do not know the definition of perfidy when you begin the book, you most certainly will when you are done.

The Tale of Depereaux.......2007-06-08

In The Tale Of Despereaux light, darkness, love and evil can all be found in the castle. But in what order do these things happen. The book takes you back and forth while other events are taking place. For Example, we learned that Mig turns to the rat. All of this is taking place as Despereaux finds Botticelli. Botticelli is trying to lead him to nothing but suffering and despair, which is what he lives for. The mouse falls in love with the princess, Mig wants to take her place and a rat is out for revenge. So what do you think will happen next? Does Mig become princess, Does Despereax marry his true love, did the rat Roscuro every find light and his revenge? The book uses light and dark to symbolize good and evil. I believe that Despereaux is the light and the rats are the darkness. But don't take my word for it; read it for yourself, you won't regret it.

What is the moral of this "Tale"?.......2007-06-04

Let me first state I do not have a problem with "dark" children's books. Roald Dahl is not all sunshine and light, nor is Lemony Snicket and we love them. I do not quibble with challenging situations in children's literature.

However, in a book that antropomorphizes creatures, where the spectacular may occur, I feel compelled to agree with my fellow critics who state that the treatment of the character Miggory Sow is atrocious....but the treatment of the character is only a by-product of a flawed tale that abuses the simplistic premise that all that is beautiful is good and things that are not, aren't.

My children and I discussed this problem. The princess in the story is beautiful. She is so much light and goodness, in fact, that her character lacks any shading. She represents everything good and Desperaux worships her, though she does little good besides look good. Miggory Sow is an unattractive house girl, with pig eyes and cauliflower ears from abuse. She is written with little depth or much humanity. The story implies that her station in life and looks are all we need consider to indicate a lack of intelligence or beauty in her soul. Miggory Sow was written so unsympathetically and the princess so one-sided, I wondered if Ms. Dicamillo was giving us her views on the social order.

It was an interesting discussion with my children. My three daughters thought it was mildly interesting - but not recommendable. My sons didn't care for it. I hated it. We sold the book, though I considered throwing it away. Just one family's opinion....

Dark -- not for kids.......2007-06-03

I really tried to like this book. But the terrible scenes of violence to Miggery Sow and the dark portrayal human nature were left unredeemed and and unenlightening. If a book is a mirror into the soul of people, then this one is too cracked and dark to be of appreciable value.

My daughter really enjoyed this book. We purchased this and Chrysanthemum and she loves both. I have read these over and over again. This is a cute tail about Lily and her new toy and how she gets in trouble trying to show off her toys in class. It has wonderful detailed artwork and the storyline is very enjoyable.

I read the book Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. The reason I would recommend this book is so people could decide if they like it even though I didn't. I didn't like this book because Lilly was mean. In the book I read that Lilly was writing mean stuff to her teacher just because the teacher took her stuff away when she wasn't supposed to have it in school. This convinced me that it was not a good book.

Wonderful story!.......2007-01-14

A great story good for lots of laughs! Lilly receives a purple plastic purse containing her many treasures from her grandmother and brings it to school to share with her teacher (who she idolizes) and her friends. She cannot wait to share her treasures with her friends and does so against the admonition of her teacher, resulting in its confiscation until the end of the day. She "hates" her teacher until the end of the day when he returns her purse and lets her know that even though she had a hard day, everything will be okay. A classic!

It's Not Easy Being........Your Student.......2006-12-18

About a million years ago I was teaching 1st grade when Lilly's book appeared in my room one day carried in by my Principal for a shared reading. I had a purple purse at the time up on my desk, donated by my daughter so that I, too, that very same day after lunch could read the tail...it would appear that the Apple carpet was getting ready for the battle of the Shared Readings.

In the end with me deferring till after she left, both of us faired pretty well, with a great story like this one you can always win the day and even read it twice, but what I remember best and my then Principal remembers best, was the day we co-opted one another in presenting something we both knew was the hot story of the year.

Ah...Henkes is a hot writer....kids know it, kids get it...maybe one day he'll get his due. Cause he's got stories that tell the lives of their characters with true insightful zing. And it's a rare day I can really use zing in a sentence.

In this story which is a perfect present this time of year ...Lilly a mousette brings to school her favorite, precious, new, wonderful spanking purple purse. I feel exactly this way about my new Puma's truth be known and want to wear them EVERYWHERE....she's jingling, checking, peeking, distracting, bugging, interrupting the important daily class work of her dear , dear, dear favorite teacher Mr. Slinger and guess what, he is a braver teacher than I for he takes the purse from her to stop her side show. I'm still upset someone guilted my PUMAS off my feet last week as too sporty for "going out". And Lilly feels this with every fiber of her being. Imagine losing to a teacher's hand something so precious to you. Just a teacher hint here.....you may not get this student back on your side EVER unless they have a really big forgiving nature....and it always works for me to suggest putting distractions into my special drawer to keep my purse "company". After all NO one is allowed in the drawer where my purse is "secretly" kept. ButI suppose Mr. Slinger has no purse...Anyway as the tale continues Lilly writes a note, the teacher writes a note, feelings bound and bounce and are resolved in such exhaustingly sweet ways.You have to love how it all comes back at the end of the day. I love resolutions...and I love watching Lilly get back on track.

And truely I love to read this story to kids...it's one to read especially when a child like my first grade Gabby La La goes over to the Santa Shop and returns to the classroom clutching her bag of goodies which I know will make the rest of the day slightly irrelevant. Watching her with her porcelin penguin soap pumper for Momma and her glitter covered "ring of ears" for herself and her "littles bag of the doggies bones" for the dog her Momma won't get her but who we hear about all day long and I'm seriously worried if this really doesn't get bought this Christmas...watching all of this I just pull out this Lilly story and shift into teacher mode thanking Henkes for getting my word out for me. Teacher teaching here. Thank you.

It's more than a great book. Lilly's books are just living.

I got this book when I was 6 and I still like it! It is the touching story of little Lilly, who loves her teacher but hates him when he takes away her purple plastic purse and sunglasses. It is sooo cute and very fun to read. It is very true-to-life, unlike those other stupid books that think they're tapping into the minds of children. I highly recommend this book. I even have a kid-sized purple plastic purse and a Lilly stuffed animal! This is such a cute book. 5 stars and perfect for any age!

The story was fun and just what we needed as we drove around on our vacation. The major complaint I had with the recording was the vocal and sound quality. The characters' voices were often times very inconsistent with regard to the sound levels. Some character's had very grating voices, and when they would yell, it was literally painful. The narrator's voice was lilting and pleasant, and when it would switch to a another character, often times is was jarring and loud.

Universal & Classic Storytelling At Its Finest.......2007-05-12

I started reading the Redwall series just a short time ago and I must admit that I am completely hooked. For anyone who enjoys classic storytelling in a fantasy theme, this series is a gem.

Yes, it is violent...there are battles, characters die, villains are truly villainous...both to the good and to their own followers. The violence might disturb some (particularly younger children who have not been exposed to the realities of war, death, and evil), but on the whole I found it to be very realistic, which is probably why it is not especially suitable for younger children. Good and evil are mostly treated in a black and white manner, but there is just enough gray to make it believable. And, of course, Good always wins out in the end...but at a realistic cost. Characters you love die horrible deaths at the hands of the villains, or in sacrificing for others.

There is absolutely no inclusion of any sort of sexual content whatsoever, beyond the fact that there are families, babies, and so forth...it is completely innocent in that way. Otherwise, there is no candy coating to how depraved the truly evil can be, nor to how difficult true courage and bravery are.

I feel the primary "moral" of the Redwall series is this: Peace and Happiness for individuals or a community requires vigilant protection and Good people must oftentimes act to preserve their bounty from those who would destroy it by force.

Beyond the philosophical aspects of the writing, the detail and consistency of behavior, mannerisms, and speech in each of the characters is delightful. As one progresses through the series, it becomes apparent that there are no humans involved...the buildings, ships, crafts...everything is done by the animals themselves, to their scale. Whether or not there are humans elsewhere, that is unclear, but is rather beside the point of the stories. No, these animals don't look like people...a badger is a badger, a mouse is a mouse, a sparrow is a sparrow...but they think like we do, they scheme, they go on adventures, and they live fascinating or mundane lives...all in a world where things are just a little bit magical.

Various species have dialects and some are so entertaining that it is hard to not attempt to read passages out loud just for the sheer joy of how the words sound to the ear. Knowledge of the many accents of Britain will help in this and oftentimes the accents imply a type of social stereotype to a character. Coupled with the natural behaviors and temperaments of the real world animals, this is quite a fascinating set of characters Jacques has created and it is full of humor.

This truly is classic storytelling at its universal best.

Redwall.......2007-05-03

Redwall is a really good book. It's about a mouse named Matthias that has to find the sword of Martin the Warrior and fight off the army of Cluny the Scourge. Matthias gets help from Methuselah, Constance, and Basil Stag Hare. I would recommend this book to people ages 10 to 12 because it has action, adventure, and lots of descriptive words and writing.

A Great Adventure Book.......2007-04-18

The book Redwall by Brian Jacques is a very exciting story. It is a story about a young mouse named Matthias that lives in a castle called Redwall Abbey. One day, rats came to try and take over the abbey. He knows the only way the mice can win is to find the sword of the great mouse Martin the Warrior. Matthias goes on a perilous journey for the sword; facing owls, snakes, and many other dangers on his quest to save the abbey! The main character of the story is Matthias and it takes place in a forest in the past.
Redwall is a fantasy book. The moral of the story is good triumphs evil. I would recommend this book because it is very exciting, adventurous, and mysterious. If you pick this book up, you won't be able to put it down!

I highly recommend this book Mouse and the Motorcycle. This is a book parents read to their younger kids, and you will most likely love this book. This book is about a kid and a mouse named Ralph. The kid's name is Keith. He is going to the Mountain Inn in room 215 and Ralph lives in there too. Ralph becomes friends with Keith. Keith decide to let Ralph ride a toy motorcycle and Ralph is only allowed to ride the motorcycle at night. Ralph's family needed food one day and Keith was so nice to give Ralph half of his P.B.J sandwich.
Beverly Cleary is such a good writer. Beverly also wrote the Ramona books. If you like Ramona books you would also be in love with Mouse and the Motorcycle.

The mouse asks the little boy if he can sit on the motorcycle. The little boy said "yes". The mouse pretended it was a really motorcycle and then the motorcycle started moving but when you stop making the Rrrrrrrrrrmmm. The noise stopped the motorcycle stopped.
You will have to find out what will happen next by reading the book.

This phenomenal book The Mouse and The Motorcycle by: Beverly Cleary. Is an amazing story about a mouse getting to use a kid's toy motorcycle. It is very funny and there are always parts to surprise you. Like parts when an owl tries to eat him and there is cats and also dogs he has to survive from. Also Ralph has to get a pill the one that killed one of his family members a aspirin. Because Keith has a head ache.
The theme of this phenomenal story is the mouse gets to ride Keith's motorcycle. Ralph eventually loses the motorcycle and has to get it back before Keith leaves to see more of the U.S. Ralph gets put down a hamper and almost eats a whole shirt and then he sees the bike but he could not reach it.
In this amazing book there are two main characters Keith the boy and Ralph the mouse. Keith is a very good boy with toy cars and motorcycles. Ralph is mostly naughty and loves the motorcycle. But a lot of unexpected things happen to these two in this amazing story.
This amazing story takes place in an old hotel where a family stops while going to show their son Keith the United States. This hotel is very old hotel which very little people stop at. Including that two old people run the place.
If you want to see what happens to Ralph and Keith's bike read the rest of the book to find out. That is why I think you should read this unforgettable book.

This was my first "real book", my son's first "real book" and now my grandson's first "real book". After 40 years I can remember everything that happened in this book. That alone says it all. A fantastic read for young and old.

My daughter can't get enough of this book. She could sit in front of it all day long, opening all the flaps and staring at all the details in the pictures. She is on a real Maisy kick, so I knew she would love it, but I had no idea how much. Three months after I first got it for her (she is 21 months now), I still know that it will hold her attention when I pull it out. That's a valuable tool for the mother of an active toddler!

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH is a good book. I enjoyed reading it. I would recommend this book to anyone. Mrs. Frisby's son is sick, and something is coming up and it is not that good...if he is sick. There are four children, Teresa, the oldest, Martin the next but the biggest of the four, and Cynthia the youngest and Timothy. THe farmer is why Mrs. Frisby and her family have to move, becasue when the frost melts the famer will plow. Jeremy helped Mrs. Frisby by bringing he to the owl, which can help because he has been there longer than anyone can remember, and so the owl helped. So they figured out the moving problems with Timothy.

I enjoyed reading Mrs.,Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. This book was funny,and very interesting. it was about a mouse family, the Frisbys', who are taken care of by their mother, Mrs.Frisby. She is very terrified about moving day this year, because her son, Timothy is very sick, to sick to move. She struggles along the way, to find somewhere and someway to move before the plow comes, and destroys their house. Along the way, she meets many new friends, and she discovers that there is someone who can help: the Rats of Nimh. She becomes friends with the rats of Nimh, and does so many things, and goes through a lot of trouble, to save her son, Timothy. It is interesting to hear all of the things that animals have to say, and that rats can make a home out of a rosebush. I thought it was a good book, and I give it four stars.

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh is a wonderful book in my opinion! Something that makes it exciting is that it uses personificatioin. Which makes it more interesting because you can compare problems that animals face with proplems that may be easier for humans to solve. At some points it was very suspenseful, especially at the end of chapters. Sometimes I always wanted to read ahead. The book also expresses love, family, and trust for each other. It was ok but Mrs.Frisby and the Rats of NIMH isn't something that I usually read. It was a great book and I suggest people should check it out. Mrs. Frisby and the rats of nimh is a great book. I like it because each chapter makes you wonder what will happen next. The auther uses personification so it is cool that it has an animal's perspective. I rate this book a three because it is not a bad book, but it is not the best book I have ever read. It is a great book. I think anyone would like it if they wanted a good book to read.

I would recommend this book because it is full of action and intensity. When I started reading this book, I never wanted to put it down. After every page, it just got better and better. There were many surprises in this book, like if there is a battle or new enemy; it was just full of surprises. I would and have read a book by Brian Jacques, which was Redwall, the first book in the series. Now I am reading the prequel to Redwall, Mossflower. Overall, Mattimeo was a terrific book.

Excellent Book for everyone young and old.......2007-04-16

Tis book tells the story of Mattiemo, a young mouse who is captured by Slagar the fox in a break in at Redwall. He and all of his friends are taken to an evil land but Mattiemo's father Matthias is hot on this trail!!!!!

This is a good book for those that have read the series before (Expecially Redwall). It brings back our favorite characters, including Basil Stag Hare, Jess Squirrel, Matthias, Cornflower, Tim and Tess, plus many more.
It has a good plot, plus many emotions including sadness, romance, courage and a huge fighting spirit.

Great novel.......2006-11-21

"Mattimeo" tells the story of the son of Matthias the Warrior, who happens to be named Mattimeo. The plot is compelling and whimsical, great especially for younger readers, and I enjoyed it even more than "Redwall". There were only a couple of minor things that kept me from giving it the full five stars.

First of all, there are the numerous (that may well be an understatement) descriptions of Slagar's mask. Believe me, if you don't know what material that mask is made of by the end of the book then you have some serious attention problems. Quotes such as "Slagar grinned from behind the silken mask" and "The silk mask sucked into a hideous grin" are okay when used in moderation, but when we are bombarded endlessly with these nearly identical descriptions, it detracts from rather than adds to the story. I'm sorry, *what* was the mask made from again?

The other thing that bothered me was the apparent lack of attention to proportion. For example, at one point, Slagar gets angry at an impudent Mattimeo and starts beating the young mouse with a cane. And yet, according to Brian Jacques, Mattimeo does not feel the blows at all. Am I the only one who thinks this is simply absurd? A fox beating a mouse with a cane would be like King Kong beating a human with an uprooted tree - that's how big foxes are compared to mice. Forget feeling the blows, Mattimeo should be crushed by them!

But despite these things, I really enjoyed the story of Mattimeo, and I would recommend it to anyone who has read other books in the series or who just loves animal fantasy. I also recommend the fantastic "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" series by Kathryn Lasky and the "Warriors" books by Erin Hunter.

Mattimeo! The new champion of Redwall!.......2006-10-17

Mattimeo is kidnapped by Slagar and his gang along with many other young ones. He is forced to travel to an evil kingdom where he will become a tortured slave forever. But, Mattimeo's father and many other parents are hot on Slagar's trail ready to fight him and any other obstacles that they may encounter.

I really liked this book because of the suspense and creepy parts of the book. The characters in this story were believable even though they are talking animals. There were gory parts though but if you are 11 or older it is pretty cool.
