Superb!.......2006-04-23
The book is well-organized and well-written. I was successful using some of the protocols described in the book to modify dog aggression. This is one of the best books out there on aggression.
Four Stars for now, with the potential for Five Stars!.......2006-03-15
This book actually has a lot of very good, practical, and very helpful information for the dog owner who wants to prevent (as I do) or treat agression problems, especially in agression-prone breeds like spaniels and some of the guarding breeds. I debated whether or not to give this book a five star rating. I settled on four stars for now because of my one "complaint" against the book -- it is a very, very COMPLICATED book to read and utilize. The author, apparently through many years of working with problem dogs, has developed a number of complex systems for treating and preventing agression problems which, while I'm sure will be useful and should work well, and just very complicated for the amateur to use. This is definitely NOT the kind of book one can read in bed when tired. It reminds me of some of my college texts -- a challenging and complicated read, and perhaps a bit on the dry side. I know that when I tried to read it recently, my mind often wandered.
To sum it up, I would recommend the purchase of this book for the interested reader, just be prepared to sit down and devote quality time to reading the book and learning the system of training the author has put forth. Unfortunately, my life right now is just too complicated to really give this book the time it deserves. I hope in the near future to have a little more free time to carefully read the book, absorb the information, and begin to implement it with my own dog.
Very helpful exercises.......2006-01-07
This book is terrific for owners of any dog. We actually rescued an dog-aggressive dog and actually went to Brenda Aloff for a few sessions. Her advice and exercises helped turn a stressed out little monster into my little princess. My dog isn't magically cured, but by using this book, we've taught her to look to her humans for guidance in stressful situations, instead of just attacking as she would in the past. She knows the rules and was taught them in a completely positive reinforcement manner. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
"...this book should be on every animal trainer's bookshelf for future reference. How Dogs Learn covers the content of an undergraduate course in learning and behavior, but the examples are taken from dog trainingit is practical and very useful without sacrificing scientific and technical accuracy." —Jack Michael, PhD, Department of Psychology, Western Michigan University
How Dogs Learn explore the fascinating science of operant conditioning, where science and dog training meet. How Dogs Learn explains the basic principles of behavior and how they can be used to teach your dog new skills, diagnose problems and eliminate unwanted behaviors. It's for anyone who wants to better understand the learning process in dogs. Every concept is laid out clearly and precisely, and its relevance to your dog and how you train is explained.
A Howell Dog Book of Distinction

Basic operant conditioning.......2007-06-04
This book was a little simple for me, since I have and experimental psychology background. However, I did discuss it with a few friends with dogs, and found that they had no idea that they were actually reinforcing bad behaviors in their dogs. There are very good suggestions for gradually encouraging wanted behaviors and discouraging the unwanted behaviors. I highly recommend this to anyone who has not previously trained a dog. It is also a good checkup for experienced dog people, like me, to make sure we remember all the mistakes we could make.
Fabulous!.......2007-01-11
This book is great!! Well written, easy to understand, hard to put down!
A text book for dog trainers.......2006-07-01
This is one of many books I have purchased in search of a solution to an aggression problem between my two dogs. How Dogs Learn reads very much like a text book or technical manual. If I worked with dogs in a professional capacity, I think this would be a very useful book, as it would help me learn the jargon. In my case, trying to learn a new vocabulary got in the way of learning the concepts behind them. I had to read some sections several times, but I did learn some interesting things about dog training. I feel I have a better understanding of my dogs, but I still have no idea how to keep them from fighting.
Concise and well written.......2006-05-22
A very quick read, this book covers the science of behaviorism very accurately. While I personally didn't learn anything new here (but have read many books on the subject) this was the most concise book on the subject yet. It explains the important concepts without getting too technical but still telling you what you need to know.
This book covered most of what I learned in my undergrad Learning And Behavior psych course.
I reccomend this book to people not just interested in how to train, but interested in why these training methods work. I would also reccomend Pryor's Don't Shoot The Dog which covers the same concepts but relates it to humans as well.
Rereading the good stuff- this is one of the best..........2004-04-02
Coming back into the world of dog training after a few years, I grabbed several of my previously owned books to review and redigest. I have only started to read "How Dogs Learn", and found the first chapter fascinating. It outlines, with just enough information without "too much" detail, the history of behavior and training from the scientists' and the trainers' perspective. I found it so helpful to have both histories and to be able to visually see how the two are now forming bridges to one another's vast databases of knowledge.
I also note that the author is very fair in her assesment of those "training forefathers", who though we as positive trainers might disagree with, truly made great investments in the dog training industry, and who deserve to be recognized for their contributions.
I recognized so many of the people involved, as well as the books, which are also mentioned (which is great- If I want to get into more detail, I know what to look for).
I still have much to read, but I am very excited about reviewing the principles of operant conditioning, and seeing more illustrations of how two worlds have begun to forge a united base of knowledge, which is sure to clarify and enlighten all of us trainers in the end.

Confused, but enjoyable anyway.......2007-01-27
Well, imagine my suprise when I began reading this book only to discover that it had nothing to do with Dog the Bounty Hunter. I had prepared myself to delve deeply into the inner workings of this man by strapping on an extra absorbant Depends adult undergarment and surrounding myself with copius amounts of food to sustain me throughout my intended reading frenzy. I still read the book, and I guess it's great if you want to train actual dogs, but as a guide to help you stalk a trained bounty hunter? Well I had to subtract one star for that shortcoming.
A favorite.......2004-04-19
Incredible book - it is so complete and really requires re-reading numerous times. For those who have difficulties with technical terms I advise buying the Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary dictionary - probably the best of its kind and truly a good companion when reading such advanced books.
well worth the time and money!.......2003-08-16
This book along with volume one are the most in depth and useful books on dogs, their behavior and training. A 'must read' for those who work with dogs and very useful for the owner who wants to know dogs better.
Outstanding.......2001-06-30
For a dog behaviour professional, this book and its companion volume have to be the most useful and important resource around. Not for the casual dog owner, but then that's not the target market. A wealth of material, well presented and organised, and without bias. Now when's the one on behaviour modification coming out??!!!
Aye Yie Yie!.......2001-06-22
I would give this book five stars if it weren't for the level of difficulty in reading it...just had to take off a star for that reason alone. This isn't the book for the first time dog owner or casual trainer. It's a serious book for the well-versed student of dog behavior and training. Mr. Lindsay definitely knows what he's talking about but the reader must already have a fairly good grasp of the "concepts" behind his explanations in order to fully understand the material. It was a good read that I had trouble putting down, though! If you're serious about learning the more advanced concepts and principles in dog behavior and training, the book is well laid out and informative to the max!

Good for new puppies.......2007-05-24
Ian Dunbar rocks. He's well-known for his philosophy of prevention and excels at it. It's a good, basic, foundation book, but might not be what you need if you have a problem that is out of control. I bought the book after viewing Dunbar's Fighting and Biting videos; they complement each other perfectly.

Book Description
Behaviors that are perfectly natural for a dog can be frustrating to dog owners if they don’t understand the dog’s motivations, reactions, and needs. Why Does My Dog . . .? explains hundreds of specific canine behaviors and problems that the author has encountered while working with dogs for more than 20 years. Problems are listed alphabetically along with root causes and solutions for specific problems. The impact of diet, training techniques, and environment on a dog’s behavior is clearly explained.
Customer Reviews:
Get into the mind of the dog.......2004-02-08
This is an excellent book. i believe all dog owners who love thier best friend must read it.
john fisher is a dog behaviourist, read: dog shrink. reading between the lines of this book, i believe he is very dedicated and is driven strongly by his love for dogs.
in the first chapter of this book, he explains what it is he does - he listens and looks at how a dog behave, or what the problem behaviours are; he would use then his vast knowledge of how a dog would behave/think to recommend a solution.
next, he would explain how modern society/living clashes with having a well behaved dogs. the crux of most dog problems is social ranking. modern society sets this basic instinct in dogs awry at times. in a short chapter, he tries to tell us how we can re-establish ourselves as masters in the eyes of the dog.
the rest of the book lists from A-Z a long list of behaviourial problems and how to deal with it. most problems will be attached a related real life problem he encountered, and the solution he advised.
the book concludes with a 10 page appendix. this is where he lists his techniques to olve problem behaviours, there are only 1 or 2 techniques though.
i suspect 'Think Dog! An Owner's Guide to Canine Psychology' by the same author is a newer version of this book, which was first published in 1991. so you could check that book out.
if you love dogs, understand their mentality, read this book!
Very illuminating, excellent resource.......2003-01-19
Written by an experienced pet behaviour councellor, this book is a must-read for dog owners, especially inexperienced ones. One of the most educational books on dogs I've ever come across. Explains many misconceptions we have about the way dogs interact and behave and assumptions we make that lead to negative results when training our dogs. Every topic discussed is supported by examples from Mr. John Fisher's practice in his work with problem behaviour, or rather what we label as problem behaviour according to our value system. I'll definitely buy Mr. Fisher's other book "Dogwise: The Natural Way to Train Your Dog" as soon as I find it.
Think Like Your Dog!!.......2000-11-28
This book is a must for dog owners! Dealing with a dominant puppy was such a frustration until I read Mr. Fisher's book. My puppy's attitude changed the first day I implemented these training ideas. He is now a joy to be around. All it took was me learning to think like a puppy!
