The idea for Sunspot started as a joke when a friend complained to Laurie Birnsteel that her dog hated change. When asked if her dog was born in May, the friend replied yes. “That's why,” Birnsteel replied. “Your dog is a Taurus, and Tauruses hate change.” Thus began more than two years of research—including hundreds of questionnaires and interviews with dog owners—into the relationships of dogs and their signs—more specifically, how their astrological signs affect their behavior.

“The last dog who owned me was a Gemini,” Birnsteel writes, “and I never knew if she would lift her leg or squat. Like the zodiac twins, she had different and distinct personalities. She could be sweet with someone one minute and growl at her the next. Lili, the dog who owns me now, is a Cancer. She's gentle, not confrontational, emotional, and melodramatic. What can I say?”

Each sign has its own chapter in Sunspot. Beginning with lists of the “good doggy” and “bad doggy” characteristics for each, Birnsteel proceeds to offer real-life examples of dogs behaving in ways consistent with their signs. At the end of the book, the questionnaires that pet owners completed are included.

In "Sunspot," Laurie Birnsteel, a Hawaii native who currently lives in Louisville, has created a book that really should have been written a long, long time ago. But it wasn't, and for that alone she deserves credit. But she has also walked a fine line between silly and serious - something that takes skill. For those who put no stock in astrology - especially PET astrology - Birnsteel's cheeky approach to this book provides a knowing wink. Simultaneously, for those who do, she never condescends or makes light of the subject matter.
By breaking doggy astrological traits down into "bad doggy" and "good doggy" columns, she makes it an easy read, and testimony from actual dog owners is the hook. The book ends with a "survey" so that, if you don't know your dog's birthdate, you can determine what sign your pooch falls under. All in all, it's clear that Birnsteel is an animal lover who is merely enjoying the opportunity provided by a part of her life that she holds dear. Dog lovers will eat this up, especially if consumed as a light read. Others probably will scoff. Either way, it will be a welcome addition to your coffee table.
