The Ultimate Joe Chronicle.......2003-08-28
All other books about GI Joe take note: You have just been left in the dust. Michlig's authoritative and highly readable GI Joe: The Complete Story of America's Favorite Man of Action is the best single source of information about the origin of GI Joe that exists. Colorful anecdotes illuminate this exhaustively informative, definitive work about America's Movable Fighting Man. It belongs on the bookshelves of everyone interested in the history of playthings.

Hard to Put Down.......2002-11-28
A great read for the hardcore collector or the novice.
Full of great insider info and eye watering photographs.
Essential Joe history.......2002-03-15
Excellent review of the life and times of America's Moveable Fighting Man. Especially interesting are the details of the conception and behind-the-scenes work in creating the prototype figure and marketing concept, an aspect of the story that may interest even non-Joe devotees. Collectors may wish to note that this is a much-expanded (and therefore more essential) version of the slender book included with the G. I. Joe Masterpiece Edition boxed figure.
Well researched and a tale well told.......2001-11-22
Don't confuse this book with the "GI Joe collector's guides" that exist in various forms. This is a different animal - - gripping, well-written nonfiction, telling the story of a small family-owned business and its leap of faith on a brand new type of toy for boys, the now-ubiquitous "action figure."
The story of the GI Joe product illuminates the story of the toy industry itself. I found this look inside the process of bringing a product to market and maintaining its value over the course of decades fascinating.
What great fun!!.......2001-05-01
I don't normally give a Five Star rating, but my god, this book is wonderful. The story is fun and indepth. The design is AMAZING and the images of the GI JOE figures are wonderfully shot.
If you have even a slight, passing interest in GI JOE, buy this book, you won't be dissappointed!

Good but...........2005-01-18
I am no expert at gi joe collecting but I did not find what I was looking for in this book. It has very nice color pictures but is extremely specific and repetitive. This may seem good for some people but not for me. It does not include the spec for the Deep diver, vehicles and some equipment. Also it does not include many boxes that you can easily see on the net. I do not know if I can rely in its price guide also. The book is mainly focused in showing one pic of single items and in describing the subtle differences between one series and another of the SAME figure in almost all cases. The format is in two column and you have to go reading from the top to bottom and to the top again so it becomes kind of confusing to read at first.
I will conclude that this is a nice book if you are looking for specific information and not if you are looking for a visual aid to see what item goes with what to complete your collection.
If you want it anyway try to find the lowest price.
But anyway do not forget to HAVE FUN!!!
A useful tool.......2002-03-15
A straight-forward catalogue of Joe figures and accessories from the beginning through the 4" era and on to today. Black & white pictures are plentiful. Not the book for blissful page-flipping and reminiscing, but definitely the place to turn for organizing your collection.
Correcting a reviewer.......2000-03-23
I would like to correct a statement made by reviewer Andrew Walls regarding the "official" status of GI Joe: An Official Identification and Price Guide (1964-1999). This book, like others written by Vincent Santelmo on GI Joe, was licensed and the manuscript was reviewed and approved by Hasbro Inc. As Acquisitions Editor at Krause Publications, I was involved in every step of this legal process. I can understand the reviewer's confusion since many publishers don't take the necessary steps nor commit the time and expense to create licensed or "official" books.
Neither Complete, Nor Official.......2000-01-02
This book has some useful information on uniform and figure variations, but it is far from being a complete guide to G.I. Joe. For a more complete reference to every vintage boxed and carded figure and equipment set, check out this authors other book, The Complete Encyclopedia to G.I. Joe (1997 Krause Publications). Although it is primarily black and white, it is the most complete and comprehensive guide to in-package G.I. Joe stuff. When I first heard Vinnie was doing this book, I assumed it would be as complete and comprehensive as his previous book, only in full color, with a focus on individual and out of package stuff. While there are values for individual pieces of equipment, and many sets are photographed out of package, not every set and piece of equipment is covered, mentioned, or even listed in the book. This is obviously not due to a lack of knowledge on the authors part, but may be due to publishing considerations. I can only speculate. Perhaps Vinnie only had a limited number of pages to work with and realized he wouldn't be able to get it all in. If that's the case, perhaps he should have omitted the sections on 1980's and 1990's Joes and focused exclusively on the vintage 60's and 70's stuff. I like the format and the idea of the book, it just seems as if it's only about 1/4 complete. As a supplement to Vinnie's other book, this is okay, but don't expect to gain a comprehensive knowledge of Vintage G.I. Joe from it. This book was not licensed or approved by Hasbro, so the term "Official" in the title is somewhat bogus.
A must GI Joe reference for the "Avid" Joe Collector.......1999-11-17
A very informative and concise detail presentation of the 'Singled Boxed' GI Joe's and the 'Packaged Sets' he was sold with . Wealth of detailling; Right down to the different type screws used on some fiqures. Well done. A 'must have' reference for any serious collector.

Don't bother.......2006-03-18
This guide is very incomplete! It only has the basic figures and uniforms only up to the 1990's even though it just came out in print in 2006.
COMPACT, CARRY ALONG BOOK.......2006-02-01
The Warman's G.I. Joe Field Guide is not a comprehensive, all-encompassing guide to G.I. Joe figures. Writer Karen O' Brien makes this clear in the introduction. Rather, this small (5" by 4") book serves as a convenient, pocket guide to G.I. Joe figures and accessories and includes hundreds of clear, vibrant photographs. It's the kind of book you can pack along easily when you travel to garage sales, flea markets, or collectibles shows. While it may not be exhaustive, there is still a lot packed into its 512 pages. O' Brien provides a brief history of the figure line and the opening section of photos display the various copyright marks and facial and uniform variations on the early figures.
Some figures are show loose while others are show still in their original boxes. For pricing purposes, only a MIP price is given. Another plus is that O'Brien provides the Hasbro item number for the figure (although not accessory sets). Some of the rarest Joe figures are pictured including the Soldiers of the World sets, the rare Canadian Mountie Sears figure, and the Action Girl G.I. Nurse, valued at $4000, perhaps the rarest figure of all. The various adventure sets were always my favorite as a kid and the book includes photos of these great sets including the Secret of the Mummy's Tomb, White Tiger Hunt, and Fight for Survival dog sled set. You know I still have those plastic husky dogs over thirty years later!
The first 380 pages of the book are dedicated to the original G.I. Joe line while the last 130 pages are given over to the 3 ½" line. Only figures are pictured for the 3 ½" line, no vehicles or accessories are included. As a basic, carry along guide it serves its purpose well to provide some guidelines for pricing and identification. You can get more comprehensive guides but this fills the bill for being compact and inexpensive.

Book Description
After almost a decade of inactivity, the U.S. government is forced to call the daring, highly trained, special missions force known as G.I. Joe back into action! The threat? Their mortal enemies, the ruthless terrorist organization known as Cobra, have returned after apparently being dissolved in the 1990's. But how have the lives and relationships of those on both sides of the conflict changed after so long?
Customer Reviews:
THE TRIMPHANT RETURN OF G.I. JOE.......2005-04-26
Marvel Comics began producing a G.I. Joe comic book back in 1982, the same year Hasbro rolled out the new 3 ¾" line of Joe action figures. The series was a big hit and would be one of Marvel's top sellers for many years and spawn several companion titles such as G.I. Joe Special Missions and G.I. Joe European Missions. But as the popularity of the toy line waned, so did the popularity of the comic and the title was finally canceled in 1994 after 155 issues. G.I. Joe lay dormant for seven years until resurrected by Devil's Due in 2001. "G.I. Joe Reinstated" re-prints those first four issues where we see the Joe team brought out of the mothballs to once again face off against arch-nemesis, Cobra. But this was not the G.I. Joe of twenty years ago which was squarely aimed at the young boys who played with the action figures. This was a grittier, edgier Joe, fully immersed in our modern world of terrorism and 9/11.
Reinstated begins deep in the Florida Everglades at the base of Dreadnok leader Zartan. Zartan hosts a meeting of Cobra dignitaries including the Cobra Commander, the Baroness, Major Bludd, Destro, Dr. Mindbender, Tomax, and Xamot. These diverse and ego-maniacal personalities instantly begin squabbling over power as the Cobra Commander presents Cobra's newest weapon...nanite technology which he claims will infect and destroy virtually anything it's introduced into, whether it's mechanical or organic. Destro manages to usurp power and imprison the Cobra Commander. But military has been keeping an eye on Zartan in the form of Snake Eyes' apprentice Kamakura, who relays his information to Joe command. After seven years the Joe team is reassembled with Duke, Flint, Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Roadblock, Shipwreck, Gung Ho, Mainframe, Spirit, and more...We catch up with the Joe team and learn that Snake Eyes and Scarlett were to be married but Snake left three weeks before the wedding. We also learn rather humorously that Bazooka is no longer quite fit for active duty.
The Joe team begins their assault on Zartan's base but it is all a ruse to draw the Joe team in. Scarlett and Snake Eyes are captured and several members of the Joe team, including many new recruits are infected with the nanites. Furthermore, Cobra has begun infecting infrastructure in the U.S., hitting government installations, communications networks, and other targets, resulting in widespread damage and chaos. Cobra's plan is then to play the good guy and save the day so the government will be in their debt. The Joe team must now find a way to battle this new technology and save the men and the nation from Cobra's latest threat.
Reinstated was an extraordinary story and a great way to bring back the Joe team. Far from the more implausible Marvel stories, Reinstated handled the seven year absence logically with the various Cobra members quibbling over power. Meanwhile on the Joe side we are given some meat to the past seven years that the Joe team had been disbanded. While it would have been great to see a bit more of what's happened to the team in that time, it was at least nice to see the subject handled intelligently. And in a plot right out of today's headlines we hear that people are protesting in Washington over the Joe Teams attack on the Cobra base. Kudos to Josh Blaylock for playing up the whole sympathizing with the terrorists angle as many people today have done with Al-Quida. Steve Kurth and John Larter provide the striking artwork putting the finishing touches on this great trade collection. Devil's Due had done a great job of balancing staying true to the characters Marvel and Hasbro introduced and updating them for 21st century readers. I like having the stories aimed at a more mature audience than the "G" rated Marvel material. Clearly, G.I. Joe is in good hands at Devil's Due.

A great book for GI Joe fans worldwide. Definitely a Collector's Item!
Reinstated [is bad]!!!.......2003-04-02
I'm sure most of the people who will read this review have been fans of GI Joe: ARAH since it's inception in the early 80's like I am. I was very happy when they brought back the toy line and was equally excited when I saw the "Reinstated!" comics. I just read the book, and it was the biggest disappointment. First the story had so many holes in it. Second, too much love story, and finally inconsistency with the original GI Joe story line. There is so much I want to get into, but I will be giving the story away (and believe me, you'd thank me for it). If you give in to your curiosity and buy the comic, prepare to be very disappointed.
And Knowing is Half the Battle!!!!!.......2002-08-21
No one was more happy to see the return of GI Joe then i was. I grew up with them. I read their comic, I played with their toys, and I watched their cartoon show. i am not ashamed and enjoyed all three immensely. Even now I am older, with less free time, and fewer toys to play with, but still the return of GI Joe left me very excited. This Volume contains the first 4 issues of the new Image comic being published by Devil's Due and I have to say that it is just great!!! The comic brings us up to speed with the GI Joe team who must once again stop Cobra, and Destro, and everyone's favorite maser of disguise Zartan. The stories are all well done, and the art is simply beautiful. Mind you this not a reprint, but all brand new first run stories. So if you are a closet Joe like me. Then do yourself a favor, and pick this one up!!!! Now drop and give me 20!!

Expensive.......2005-11-21
I have the first two G.I. Joe collections. They are pretty expensive for the limited amount of issues covered in them. Any episode of G.I. Joe is more entertaining than the comic so far. In the first book there is a two issue story arc. Unlike the cartoon there is some blood coming out of shot soldiers. Cobra Commander seems to be an underdeveloped character, since all you see him doing when he is not leading troops is practicing firing a machine gun. He is a good shot though, he shoots the leader of G.I. Joe in the head. Cobra Commander is revealed to be an escapist, at the closing of battles he makes some great getaways.
Review of all 5 volumes.......2005-10-19
I had occasionally read Marvel Comics' GI Joe series during my childhood, but I had never concentrated that hard on the overall storyline being developed by writer Larry Hama. Instead, I used the comics more as a supplement for planning the adventures of my vast collection of 3-3/4" Joes. Over the past several years, Marvel has made a half-baked attempt at reprinting the series, so I decided to pick them up to see what I remembered and what I could make of it. Unfortunately, the 5 volumes only covers 50 issues - that's right, 50 of 155 issues, not even counting the yearbooks and other related titles. But hey, when you consider that Marvel was asking twenty-five bucks for only 10 issues per book, it's no wonder this series of reprints lost steam.
Overall, these GI Joe issues are a standard example of a writer working within the confines of a licensed property; meaning, that over the course of the stories, very little happens to change the status quo. At the end, it's still GI Joe vs. COBRA, and when Hasbro has a property to sell, it can't be worked into a corner. Because of this, you may get bored seeing the same characters in similar situations over and over again. Despite this, Hama does provide some occasional diversions from the standard fare, such as plots that almost resemble EC war comics, or that give us insight into the lives of specific characters in the GI Joe universe. The best example of the former is issue # 34, which features a tense dogfight between the high-flyers Ace and Wild Weasel. For the latter, there are no better examples than issues 21, 26, and 27, where Hama builds a history for the mysterious Snake Eyes. These 3 issues in particular are pure gold (in fact, # 21, titled "Silent Interlude", is commonly referred to as the best GI Joe story ever written), and it can be clearly seen why Snake Eyes became the fan-favorite, as no other Joe received this degree of analysis.
Art-wise, this series was somewhat of a disappointment. Herb Trimpe provides great pencils for the first several issues, with his Kirby-esque style giving an interesting twist to the military hardware and scientific gadgets. The great Marie Severin drops by for one issue. Writer Larry Hama even takes time for a few penciling jobs, notably the aforementioned issues 21 & 26. Sure, this sounds pretty good so far, but thereafter, it's primarily a rotation of Rod Wigham and Frank Springer, neither of whose work has any real depth. What's really unfortunate is that Larry Hama wasn't able to illustrate more stories in the series, as he is truly a talented artist who obviously knows how his stories should be depicted. He's good - really, really good. In addition, while Michael Golden does provide some covers, his work from the GI Joe Yearbooks was not included. What a shame.
Overall, this was a fun trip back to my childhood, but for the cost, the quality of the material doesn't quite add up. This is the rare case where I feel a talented inker should be allowed to spruce up an older comic.
Great book, save for a few omissions.......2003-09-04
Ah yes, the start of the GI Joe craze. The comics are far better than the TV series ever was. The interesting thing about the first ten issues of GI Joe is that, except for the 2-part Oktober Guard intro, they are all single-issue stories, most of which impact very little on the rest of the series.
I liked having them in a single volume, but I do not like the fact that the back-up story in issue 1, nor the pin-up extras that were in the original somics, are included in this volume. Would it have hurt them to have put those add-ons in the back? That's why I can only give this volume a 4 out of 5.
I'm glad I got this........2002-09-12
I had every issue ... of GI Joe but had to sell my collection to make ends meet. Now however I'll be able to enjoy the art, stories and memories I once had with these new paperbacks.Amazon has good shipping time and great prices for these books so get them here. I hope they end up reprinting all ...issues and [the] Special Missions.
He'll Fight For Freedom Wherever There's Trouble!!!!.......2002-08-21
This is Volume 1 of what i hope to be the entire Gi Joe Marvel Comic Book series reprinted in mind blowing digital color. Volume 1 covers Gi Joe issues 1-10, and I have already gotten Volume 2. for some reason amazon is not showing you the true cover art of the books which is just beautiful!!!! This takes me back to 1982, where Reagan was president, and the Russinas were still the scariest people on the planet and Eddie Murphy was still funny. This volume captures the sweet simplicity of mainstream comic books. All the heroes are good, and the villians are bad. No shades of grey in these here comic books!! Buy this volume. Savor the simplicity of a summer spent reading Gi Joe when it was first run. Don't think of it as marketing a new line of toys, cuz I'd like to think that that was not what the comic was about. it was just good ole fashioned Good VS Evil, and the fate of the world lay in the hands of the men and woman of the GI Joe Team.

For young GI Joe fans.......2006-03-17
This is a good book for young GI Joe fans. 4 pages of stickers and 8 pages to stick them. There are 6 backgounds where you can create your own battle images with your stickers. There is also small info on some Joe and Cobra characters. The stickers are mostly package art from Valor vs Venom toy line. But there are also some new character images like Zanya form the DDP comic books. Some stickers are different versions or poses of the same character. So 60 stickers do not mean there are images of 60 different characters or vehicles.

Book Description
Early in the 20th century, the hoofbeats of U.S. Cavalry horses were a familiar sound at America's new base in the Philippines. At the beginning of WWII, Japanese bombs destroyed American planes on the runway. After the war, the base played a vital role, providing men and equipment to wars in Korea and Vietnam
until the 1991 monster eruption of Mt. Pinatubo sent American airmen away, never to return. This gritty, poignant, humorous, and sometimes disturbing chronicle reconstructs the 90-year history of what was the largest, and one of the most colorful, overseas United States military bases. That story is told in previously unpublished letters, writings, and personal accounts by the men, women, and families who were stationed there.

Clark AB- The way it really was........2006-10-20
For those of us that were lucky to have been assigned to Clark AB, this book will bring back a flood of memories, lots of laughs, and a few tears. Captain Utts' book provides an in depth history of Clark. More important, it provides a look at the base through the eyes of those men and women that served there. It tells of how they lived, loved, fought, and, in some cases, died, at Clark. I read it cover to cover in one setting-it was to good to put down!
