Book Description
The innovative designs in silver jewelry made in Europe and North America in the 20th century are fascinating and highly popular today. This new book starts with the end of Victorian styles, just before the turn of the twentieth century, and proceeds to display and explain the relationships in Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Mexican, Native American, Mid-century Realistic, and Modern Abstract styles right up to the 1990s. Beautiful color photographs clearly show the details, makers' marks, and fine workmanship that make each piece of jewelry fascinating to so many collectors today.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic Designer Resource!.......2001-03-14
As a jewelry designer, I found this book to be incredibly valuable. While the text is not particularly well written, the photography is outstanding. Great detail shots. Many of the pieces have pictures from the back as well as the front, which is very valuable if you are trying to determine how a piece was made. Signature marks are shown as well. It is a good chronological view of the history of jewelry using spectacular examples of work. I learned a great deal from this book and would recommend it to other designers. As a book for collectors, I thought the assessment information (good, better and best) was without meaningful context and also had no monetary reference. Designers - this is a 5 star book. Collectors - this is a 3 star book.
Nancy Schiffer's "Silver Jewelry Designs".......2000-10-03
I collect silver jewelry--mostly Mexican & bought this book as a reference.
I think the photos are great, especially the colorful ones in the first part of the book on Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, & Art Deco jewelry, however, the "Values Reference" price guide in the back is very poor. There are no prices listed for many of the pieces shown in the book & the descriptions in the price guide often don't quite match up with the descriptions accompanying the photos, so it is hard to determine the correct price. Also, I think some of the prices quoted are way too high if you compare the prices in the book with, for example, prices on E-bay.
If this book is ever republished, I think the "Values Reference" should be totally revamped & I think the photo captions should follow a more logical order--such as from top to bottom or clock-wise. In the present edition they often don't.
Buy this book for the lovely photos, but if you need a price guide I don't recommend it.
Pleasing to the eye, frustrating to read........1999-05-09
As a coffee table book, 'Designs' is an excellent and pleasant pictorial example of silver jewelery from around the world. As a reference work for a collector 'Designs' at more times than is acceptable is a headache to read. Attempting to determine which of the illustrations fit the authors descriptions is time consuming and should be unnecessary. This problem is evident in the photos of multiple pieces and in the good, better, best sections. For reference purposes, order is lacking. For good, better, best selection, information is lacking. As a jewelery catalog, this book passes muster. As a reference work, I will return the book to its owner and will not purchase a copy for my own modest library.

Book Description
The increasing attention placed on women's reproductive health issues in recent years has produced a corresponding interest in the role that communication plays--from promoting better health care to fostering greater well-being. Evaluating Women's Health Messages is the first systematic examination of women's health communication. Compiling the works of over 30 contributors, editors Roxanne Louisselle Parrott and Celeste Condit explore the various forms health messages take--medical, social scientific, and public--and the ways in which they compare with and contradict each other. The book is at once groundbreaking and comprehensive, examining the range of health issues from political, historical, technological, social support, and feminist perspectives--all within the broad framework of communication. With two chapters on each topic, the book provides a variety of perspectives on such issues as abortion, infertility, drug and alcohol use in pregnancy, childbirth, prenatal care, AIDS, breast cancer, reproductive technologies, menstruation, menopause, and hysterectomy. Evaluating Women's Health Messages is a vital tool for every professional interested in women's health concerns as well as students taking courses in health communication, woman's health, public health, sociology of health, health education, and gender studies.

Book Description
From Cover To Coveris a fresh, up-to-date look at some of the best examples of children's literature today, and also includes practical advice on how to write clearly articulated, reasoned opinions so that others can learn about books they have not yet read.
It includes:
- a short explanation of the process of making a children's book from manuscript to final bound book
- a description of the importance of the many different parts of a book (jacket flaps, title page, copyright, Cataloging-in-Publication information, etc.)
- six thought-provoking chapters that explain how ot think about and critically evaluate several different genres of children's books:
books of information
- traditional literature (myths, legends, tall tales, folktales)
- poetry, verse, rhymes, and songs
- picture books
- easy readers and transitional books
- fiction
- a concluding chapter on how to write reviews that are both descriptive and analytical
From Cover To Cover is an invaluable resource for all professionals who wish to write book evaluations that go beyond a simple personal response.
This definitive guide to reviewing children's books makes it effortless for parents, teachers, librarians, children's literature students and general readers who are interested in becoming children's book reviewers to assess the strengths and weaknesses of a children's book. An authoritative reviewer in her own right, Kathleen Horning provides practical guidelines for reading critically, evaluating an initial response, answering questions raised during the first reading, putting a response into words, balancing description with criticism, and writing reviews for a particular audience.
Customer Reviews:
All right for a textbook.......2005-09-24
The book isn't really all that interesting. Some of the good aspects are that the print is big, and it is easy reading. You can knock a chapter or two out of the way in an hour easily.
Good tool for writers, too.......2000-02-03
This book is should be an essential for anyone writing for children. Horning covers all the genres, offering insight into pacing, character and plot. She better defines what makes a picture book, an early reader, a chapter book, a mid-grade and a young adult -- definitions that are often murky in writing books. Although this book may have been intended for librarians and others in the book industry, I recommend it highly for anyone contemplating writing for children.

Will equip any librarian with what they will need to address their own service impact questions.......2006-08-07
One of the on-going tasks of any corporate, academic, or community library is to track and collected information on their collections and services usages by their patrons. Library science educator and consultant Sharon Markless has collaborated with research, training and consulting expert David Streatfield to present Evaluating The Impact Of Your Library to assist librarians in designing and soliciting user assessments for service improvements. They explain how librarians can best develop clear goals and objectives for their library's services; identify success criteria and impact indicators against which projects will be evaluated; identify, gather and interpret evidence in support of goals and objectives; and employ findings for future decision-making and benchmarking with respect to library services. Enhanced with "user friendly" advice for creating questionnaires, interviewing respondents, and conducting focus groups, Evaluating The Impact Of Your Library is replete with illustrative "real world" examples and simple checklists, forms and statements, and will equip any librarian with what they will need to address their own service impact questions. Every librarian, no matter how large or small, specialized or generalized their library, should give careful attention to Sharon Markless and David Streatfield's superbly organized and presented textbook and reference.

Good descriptions, questionable repairs.......2001-08-13
This book contains very good detailed descriptions of pieces, plus place and time of manufacture. It includes a number of small pieces, as well as the more common tansu.
Restoration of antiques is currently questioned, but methods shown here are not appropriate. Sanding, especially with a belt or other powered sander, destroys original hand-planed surfaces. Sandpaper also adds its own scratches to metal parts; steel wool is preferable for removing loose rust. The Heinekens' book "Tansu" describes a better metal coloring than spray paint. A few nicks and scratches are part of the piece's history, and small splits in the back do not affect its usefulness. Unlike the frame-and-panel European and American furniture, many tansu were not designed to accommodate effects of humidity changes on wood dimensions, and a repaired back panel will continue to move seasonally. When pulling nails, a piece of sheet metal under the wirecutters would prevent denting metal or wood parts. Since the Clarkes were in Japan, they could have bought much more appropriate tools than the ones shown, and some of the ones shown should never be used for this work. Japanese woodworking tools were just becoming available in the US in the early 1980s, but restorers should look for them now.
Very informative.......2000-03-01
I learned a lot from this book about the types of Japanese furniture as well as fine details to help me evaluate pieces. This book is an excellent resource, particularly for the price! I plan on trying the directions for restoring a piece in the near future.
I learned a lot from this book........2000-02-11
I learned a lot about Japanese furniture from this book - different styles, history and how to tell a quality piece. I am going to try to restore a small piece I have using the instructions in this book. For all of the expensive books available, I learned the most from this book!

Book Description
Whether you're an experienced evaluator of mineral projects, a student, or a decision maker who is not a practitioner but must use evaluation results, this new book is an essential reference for your bookshelf. Designed to complement traditional engineering texts, this book emphasizes the concepts of mineral project evaluation rather than computational details. It describes various economic evaluation techniques typically employed (including conventional cost analysis, discounted cash flow, and option analysis), their uses, and their relationships with geological, technological, and financial evaluations. Also discussed are the strengths and weaknesses of commonly practiced evaluation methods.
This book explains the practical difficulties in conducting an analysis and correctly interpreting the results, as well as the use of alternative techniques. Because many existing texts do not adequately discuss the meanings and application of merit measures, such as net present value (NPV) or internal rate of return (IRR), this book represents an exciting departure from standard reference tools. Contents include: why NPV and IRR are both valid and useful merit measures the shortcomings of conventional NPV and IRR analysis the dangers of scenario analysis why conventional incremental analysis is not needed to correctly calculate IRR why the desire to achieve NPV-consistent IRR is misleading how competitive cost analysis is conducted and used why option pricing is an important addition to the evaluation process.
When used correctly, evaluation methods are powerful tools to help us understand the economics of investment projects. Don't miss out on this new source. Contains glossary and full index.

Book Description
"Talking the process of change and teaching is a necessity for our intellectual and social well-being," says acclaimed author Regie Routman. Now, in this long-awaited volume, Routman continues the discussion she began in the best-selling Invitations and further explores the full universe of an effective language arts and literacy program across the curriculum. Filled with an array of field-tested teaching ideas, detailed strategies, reviews of theory, teacher-crafted lessons, and lists of resources, Conversations is all you need to become an informed, confident professional, sensitive to your students' needs and interests. What's more, it incorporates Routman's perspective on important topical issues such as curricular rigor, direct teaching, specific skills, and daily monitoring.
Conversations is grounded in the belief that the connections, interactions, reflections, and new thinking that evolve from rich dialogue define what we know. It was written, in part, to spur teachers to challenge assumptions, clarify their own learning, and take the lead in their own professional development. While this is not a book about a particular methodology, Routman does explore current theory and practice, and supports her views with classroom-based and scientific research. The book is upbeat and practical; each chapter is self-contained and can be read in any order. As Routman shares her own experiences and resources - through narratives, anecdotes, step-by-step demonstrations, and examples of students' work - we may find ourselves questioning, modifying, validating, or changing our own practices. Most of all, we will find ourselves talking. And here is where the conversation begins.

Exceeded expectations.......2001-12-05
I'm a member of a mailring which includes classroom teachers and reading specialists (I'm a reading specialist). This book was recommended a number of times. I have so many professional books that I was leary of spending the money on one more, but I was at a workshop where I was able to preview the book and was impressed.
I purchased the book, and I was not disappointed! It's easy to read and has a lot of down-to-earth ideas based on the latest research and includes numerous charts, checklists and student work samples. It follows right along with expansion of ideas from Mosaic of Thought and Strategies That Work. I especially love the section on retelling.
I think teachers at any grade level could benefit from this book. There are examples at every level. This is not the kind of book you read from cover to cover. I'll use it as a reference book for years to come.
A must in every educator's library.......2000-05-16
This book is an incredible source of information for teaching any aspect of a Language Arts program. It details reading approaches and writing techniques and shows how to bring them together for a Balanced Literacy Program. It also has a great index in the back listing all kinds of resources and childrens books.

Book Description
What do Honus Wagner baseball cards, Queen Anne side chairs, and 19th-century ceramic lions have in common? At first glance, very little. Yet Evaluating Your Collection sets out to discuss this wide range of things that people collect, in order to guide them to a greater level of knowledge.
Is an object really worth the price? How does one know what to look for? Can one recognize fakes and invisible repairs? What about color, finish, and form? In 1961, Charles F. Montgomery, Winterthur's first director, articulated a system for educating the eye and appraising the quality of an object. His fourteen points of connoisseurship, along with additions by Winterthur curators, conservators, and educators, form an unbeatable system. Understanding them, and how they interrelate, equips readers with a basic expertise necessary to operate in the world of antiques.
Compact, reader-friendly, and illustrated in full color with objects largely from Winterthur's outstanding collection, this and future series volumes provide invaluable advice. Armed with tips from the experts, your trips to estate auctions, flea markets, or your grandmother's attic will never be the same.
