Book Description
"Contains...imaginative art objects...Hanson builds enthusiasm in his text for the craft, and he does it with wit."--Arts & Activities
In a newly revised and expanded version of his original success, celebrated folk artist Bobby Hanson takes the humble tin can and elevates it to art. On display in attention-grabbing photos are an array of quirky objects that will delight and amaze--and all it takes to make them are a few simple tools, some cans, and these simple instructions on cutting, shaping, riveting, and soldering. The charmingly fun projects include some childlike objects such as whistles, trucks, and airplanes; a "Tin Pan Alley" series of musical instruments, including a "canjo" and chimes; and even stunning jewelry and sculptures. Artists, metal crafters, and anyone seeking a new creative outlet will find inspiration aplenty in these uniquely original ideas and projects.

fine art of the tin can.......2007-01-19
has great photos, and ideas. it's a great inspirational book.
Pure pleasure and inspiration.......2006-03-04
Just received this book and only reluctantly put it down. If your creative urges lean towards the unusual you'll not be disappointed in Hansson's tin can art. He shares his techniques and his own 'personal art history' with a style that's both conversational and folksy. You won't be able to look at a tin can the same way after reading this book!
Pleasant Misunderstanding.......2005-08-22
The book was interesting. I thought it was going to be more of a how to do book.

A thoroughly "user friendly" collector's guide.......2004-01-14
Schuco Classic Tin Toys is a thoroughly "user friendly" collector's guide to the Schuco tin toy collection is packed from cover to cover with everything a toy collector could need ranging from histories of models of toys to technical features. Enhanced with color photos, prices and rarity ratings, Schuco Classic Tin Toys is an excellent and very highly recommended survey of classic tin toys produced by this famous German toy maker.
Classic book about classic toys.......2003-07-28
Chris Knox's book, "Schuco Classic Tin Toys", is wonderfully illustrated with stunning photography. He covers Schuco through the early years, it's rise as an innovative creator of toys, it's demise, and finally, it's resurrection.
What sets the book apart from other toy books is the beautiful photographs of Schuco toys. The photography is nothing short of spectacular.
While the book offers Schuco history and pricing, it's more of a "coffee table" book. Enjoy it for the images of classic (and collectible) toys from the Schuco line.

Book Description
Tin toy mania! Now that computer games have come to stay, tin toys have become obsolete for today's children. For those of us who remember them from times past, these tin toys can transport us back to our childhoods; they call up a vision of a time we thought we had already forgotten. They also bear witness to history; they have survived wars and crises, and tell us something of the fashions, colors and tendencies of their times.
This book will be of special interest to anyone fascinated by early space travel and technology, those who simply want to wax nostalgic about a bygone era of their youth, and of course to collectors and fans of 50s and 60s tin toys. The roots of today's toys can be seen in these precursors, notably in the early transformer robots. Taken from collector Teruhisa Kitahara's vast collection, which is on display in many museums in Japan, the tin toys featured here are quite rare and give a wonderful overview of this era in the history of toys. A must for any toy lover!
Customer Reviews:
Imagination: The Last Frontier.......2006-04-20
Kitahara's world famous tin toy collection has been photographed many times, and featured in very small paperbacks and large coffee table spreads. This is probably the happy medium; a very inexpensive, large (nearly 350 pages) and visually inviting photoessay that lets the toys speak for themselves.
As many books as there are on tin toy robots, they nearly all feature the same collections, and so the photography and presentation become paramount. Taschen has often featured Kitahara's museum(s) but never to better effect than in this inexpensive volume. Kitahara's collection also includes non-space themed tin toys, but this book concentrates on the robots and space toys from the '50s and '60s when Japan brought unbridled creativity and unparalleled design to tin toys.

Book Description
The classic tale of bittersweet love, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" chronicles the story of a toy tin soldier and his love for a beautiful toy dancer. It is believed that author Hans Christian Andersen's unrequited love for the singer Jenny Lind inspired this timeless story.
Customer Reviews:
Classic tale, well told.......2003-11-12
This book tells the classic tale of the one-legged tin soldier who falls in love with a paper ballerina. The soldier suffers a series of misadventures, including being placed at the helm of a doomed paper boat, being chased by a rat, and swallowed by a fish. It's a wonderful tale that will hold older children spellbound. The illustrations are delightful. All told, the book has about 2000 words.
THIS STORY MADE ME CRY AS A CHILD.......2000-12-18
A little boy had a set of tin soldiers that were made from a melted spoon. One soldier was missing a leg because there was not enough metal left over from the melted spoon.
Tossed aside by the boy, the one-legged soldier sees a paper cut out figure of a ballerina. She is poised on one leg and he feels an instant bond. He has found another one-legged toy and believes this to be love.
The steadfast tin soldier has a series of mishaps. He falls off the window sill into a stream. From there, he is transported to a rat infested sewer. He is swallowed by a fish and through an unlikely stroke of luck, winds up back in the boy's playroom with the other toys and the ballerina.
The ending is what gets to me every single time. A gust of wind lifts the paper ballerina up and she flutters into the fire place, winding up a charred heap of ashes. Devastated, the tin soldier joins her. The remaining metal that was once the tin soldier is a charred piece of heart shaped metal.
I still think this is a very sad story. The photographs really emphasize the feeling this story evokes.
great book!.......2000-11-08
I taught 1st grade for 4 years and all of the teachers in my grade passed this book around at Christmas to read to our class. I cried everytime I read it. It has a wonderful message and my kids in my classroom always loved it! I have now (finally) purchased my own copy of this book to read to my little girl. It is a classic and I know she will love it as much as I do. Every home should have this book to read at Christmastime.
Brilliant! Improves on the original version........2000-03-26
This is a really good book. It has all the characteristic's that made the original a cherished and remembered fairy tale. It is a great gift for any young child, and can be enjoyed by adults too. It maintains the feel of the original tale, but is more like a poem. The art work on each page is beautiful, and the pictures are totally devine. I would recomend buying this for a different and fully enjoyable version of the original.

Great Reference Book.......2006-05-23
Great reference book for collector of 40's and 50's plastic doll house furniture. Copyright in 1997 makes pricing guide a tad out of date . . . nevertheless a good starting reference price range. Great photos. Interesting information on producing companies.
Beautiful, colorful, informative!.......2006-04-19
This is a wonderful reference quide for baby boomers who want to collect dollhouses and furniture! What great memories this book brought back. I found doll houses and furniture I once had and some of the models my cousins and friends had in the 1950's! This is a trip down memory lane and the price is great for this publication. Amazon delivers quickly, too!
A Great Resource.......2001-11-29
I purchased three books on tin toys and dollhouses, and this one was the best by far to help me evaluate some tin/metal doll houses I was buying.
The book sections are by the doll house maker, with excellent photographs that help identify them, and estimated years that they were sold.
In addition there are photographs of the furniture that you would typically find in these houses. This helps alot if you have just purchased an empty doll house, and you want to furnish it with vintage items of the correct size and type.
Simply an excellent reference book for tin doll house collectors or just old-timers wanting a bit of nostalgia :)
An excellent reference to tin litho houses........1999-05-03
Mary Brett has written the Bibile of Tin Litho houses. Excellent pictures of the houses detail their interiors, exteriors and the furniture needed to make them cosy little homes. All major producers are covered, Marx, Cohn, Wolverine to mention just a few. Ms. Brett also includes a section on the more unusual items, such as the rare and unique Friendly Folks Motel. Better buy two copies, this book is destined to become dog-earred and worn before very long.
