Book Description
The Big Toy Box At Sears is a compilation of the Sears Christmas catalogs from 1951 to 1969, boy's toys only. It is printed on stock very similar to that originally used by Sears and the book is the same size (11"x8.5") as the original catalogs. It is 582 pages long, of which 172 pages are in color. It pictures trains, playsets, toy guns, trucks and countless other boy toys from the Baby Boom Era.
An excellent resource and fun to look at. (All products pictured in The Big Toy Box At Sears are no longer available.)

The Big Toy Box at Sears (1951-1969).......2007-01-04
This book provides the reader with interesting information on the particular subject, namely toys at Sears. It covers, as per the title, from the period 1951-1969, providing an excellent visual display of the annual catalogues, including the toys & trains sold. It brings back memories of years / Christmas's gone by & trips to Sears department store (in my case Gamages in London England) to see the annual Christmas display. I give it a top 5 star rating as it appeals to the writer's values, nothing less. An excellent book.
The stuff that dreams were made of..........2006-03-18
In the brief introduction to this book the editor states, "If there ever was a "Golden Age" of Western Civilization this was surely it. In the following pages one can see both the reflection of yesterday and the seeds of the future, for few things in our culture are able to capture the sense of the times as are the trivial artifacts we give to our children to play with." Well, these were the playthings that the richest nation in human history gave to its children in the Golden Age between 1951 and 1969. The entire world offered their finest toys to America- but none were finer than those made by our own manufacturers (Marx, Ideal, Mattel, Remco, Kenner, Lionel, Gilbert...)
This edited sellection is mostly of boy's toys from the "wishbooks." You will find Marx playsets and electric trains especially well covered. But there is so much more: Mr. Machine, Robot Commando, Big Caesar Galley, Barracuda Sub, Lost in Space Switch-N-Go, Barracuda Sub, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea playsets, Batman playsets, Hamilton's Invaders, Mattel Shootin' Shell, G.I. Joe, etc., etc., etc. Your only complaint will be that 583 pages aren't enough.
Not all the pages are in color, but I don't remember that all the original catalog pages were in color either. Covers are also reproduced in color for all 19 years.
Wonderful But a Bit Pricey.......2004-11-17
The Big Toy Box at Sears is a compilation from the awesome Sears Wishbook catalogs of the 1950's and 60's covering boys toys. It is one heckuva a trip down memory lane with cap guns, foto-electric football, GI Joe, slot cars and more.
You'll be instantly transported back in time if you're a guy. I can remember the catalog arriving at home in September and immediately making out my christmas list.
My only two complaints is that they had gone into the 1970's to see more great GI JOE stuff along with Hot Wheels and the first wave of Star Wars toys.
Secondly at close to $50 bucks it's a bit steep although it is over 500 pages.

A dazzling study of the Forbes collection.......2005-02-09
Award-winning creative director and veteran writer in the realm of collectibles Richard Scholl presents Toy Soldiers: A Century Of International Miniatures, a dazzling study of the Forbes collection, an assemblage of more than 10,000 toy soldiers amassed by world-renowned businessman William Forbes. Full-color photographs of the pieces, and descriptions of the sets' history and how Forbes acquired them fill this captivating "must-have" for toy soldier enthusiasts. Toy Soldiers' flawless, visually impressive and narratively engaging presentation elevates children's playthings to the level of collectible sculpted art. Also very highly recommended is Richard Scholl's companion title drawn from the Forbes collection, Toy Boats: A Century Of Treasures From Sailboats To Submarines (0762418788, $12.98).

Book Description
The classic tale of bittersweet love, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" chronicles the story of a toy tin soldier and his love for a beautiful toy dancer. It is believed that author Hans Christian Andersen's unrequited love for the singer Jenny Lind inspired this timeless story.
Customer Reviews:
Classic tale, well told.......2003-11-12
This book tells the classic tale of the one-legged tin soldier who falls in love with a paper ballerina. The soldier suffers a series of misadventures, including being placed at the helm of a doomed paper boat, being chased by a rat, and swallowed by a fish. It's a wonderful tale that will hold older children spellbound. The illustrations are delightful. All told, the book has about 2000 words.
THIS STORY MADE ME CRY AS A CHILD.......2000-12-18
A little boy had a set of tin soldiers that were made from a melted spoon. One soldier was missing a leg because there was not enough metal left over from the melted spoon.
Tossed aside by the boy, the one-legged soldier sees a paper cut out figure of a ballerina. She is poised on one leg and he feels an instant bond. He has found another one-legged toy and believes this to be love.
The steadfast tin soldier has a series of mishaps. He falls off the window sill into a stream. From there, he is transported to a rat infested sewer. He is swallowed by a fish and through an unlikely stroke of luck, winds up back in the boy's playroom with the other toys and the ballerina.
The ending is what gets to me every single time. A gust of wind lifts the paper ballerina up and she flutters into the fire place, winding up a charred heap of ashes. Devastated, the tin soldier joins her. The remaining metal that was once the tin soldier is a charred piece of heart shaped metal.
I still think this is a very sad story. The photographs really emphasize the feeling this story evokes.
great book!.......2000-11-08
I taught 1st grade for 4 years and all of the teachers in my grade passed this book around at Christmas to read to our class. I cried everytime I read it. It has a wonderful message and my kids in my classroom always loved it! I have now (finally) purchased my own copy of this book to read to my little girl. It is a classic and I know she will love it as much as I do. Every home should have this book to read at Christmastime.
Brilliant! Improves on the original version........2000-03-26
This is a really good book. It has all the characteristic's that made the original a cherished and remembered fairy tale. It is a great gift for any young child, and can be enjoyed by adults too. It maintains the feel of the original tale, but is more like a poem. The art work on each page is beautiful, and the pictures are totally devine. I would recomend buying this for a different and fully enjoyable version of the original.

Excellent customizing guide--though text requires patience.......2005-07-13
I reluctantly gave this book 4 stars because of the English translation. Want to turn your GI Joe into a museum piece? The Fort Lewis (Washington state) Military Museum has many 12-inch figures on display to represent soldiers of different eras. "Second World War And 12-Inch Action Figures" is a how-to guide on turning 1:6th-scale action figures from Dragon, 21st Century, and Blue Box Toys into museum minatures. I have a minor complaint about the American soldier shown on pages 64 and 65--the sling on his M1903 Springfield rifle is attached to the stacking swivel instead of the forward sling swivel. I can't gripe much--the original GI Joe made the same mistake with the M1 rifle! Another minor glich is calling a 75mm recoiless rifle (page 4) a 57mm recoiless rifle. Even so, the advice on modelling tools and techniques and the photos and descriptions of the finished figures made for an entertaining read. I may even be able to use some of these techniques.

Book Description
Mustered together here are over 400 soldiers from the armies of Napoleon, King Arthur, the Kaiser, Grant and Lee: knights, grenadiers and lancers, cavalry officers and foot soldiers-all reporting for peacetime duty as collectible toy soldiers. These heroic metal men wear colorful uniforms from the Age of Chivalry to the world wars, on parade again, reporting in with a caption that places each of them as figures in history. The adult war gamer and collector alike will instantly recall being a powerful general commanding a childhood army of valiant model soldiers like these.
Customer Reviews:
Collecting Toy Soldiers.......2004-01-04
This appears to be a French publication, written in English and aimed at the U.S. market. The author has written 6 books in the "collectibles" series on very diverse themes and here has drawn on the knowledge and collections of some of the best known collectors and dealers in Paris. There is little authoritative information in the text and what there is has mostly been taken from "Petits Soldats" and "CBG" by Christian Blondieau. That said, the format of the book is excellent with clear full colour pictures on every page showing predominantly French manufactures, the majority of which have have not been illustrated elsewhere.
The section on Flats (52 pages) is good concentrating on some of the earlier and lesser known manufacturers rather than the big German names. The section on Lead (152 pages) mostly covers recent CBG Mignot, connosieur collectors models and modern white metal "toy soldiers", all of which are nice to see and may be collectable but were never made to be played with so are not toy soldiers! The chapter on Alluminium (48 pages)is very nice, concentrating on the products of Quiralu, as you would expect. Plastic and Composition figures are lumped in together (68 pages) and there is quite a nice mix here - early Starlux plastics and some of the lesser known French composition manufacturers.
I found it refreshing to see a book which contains virtually nothing on Wm Britains, Heyde, Dimestore and Lineol/Elastolin as these are all more than well covered elsewhere. At the price, it is exceedingly good value for money and given the dearth of knowledge on French toy soldiers, outside of France, I would certainly recommend it.

A great history, identification, and price guide........2002-10-15
I've been collecting American toy soldiers all of my life, and this is by far the best guide that I've ever found. It works as a good overall history of the subject, as well as, a specific historical guide to the companies and individuals involved. It is also superb as an identification guide and for approximate pricing.
Whether you are into cast metal figures like Maniol, Barclay, or Grey Iron, or the classic Marx, Ideal, MPC, or Lido plastics, this is one great guide. It even covers comic book flats, paper soldiers, cerial premiums, and the original G.I. Joe. You can spend hours just flipping though this hefty book and reminiscing, even if you don't currently collect.
Collecting Toy Soldiers. (1996) Third Edition.......2000-07-10
Second of two large soft cover books by Richard O'Brien, specifically aimed at the identification and fair value of American Made Toy Soldiers. Includes brief history of each manufacturer pre and post WWII styles of soldiers. Top quality materials, mine has traveled thousands of miles in suitcases, back packs and the backseat. Opened and closed hundreds of times, it is still in great shape. Crisp and clear photos of most of the listed items have helped avoid confusion and misidentification.
With on-line auctions setting the pace in the toy soldier collecting world. An identification guide of this quality is a must in establishing a BEGINNING bid, while desirability sets how high the actual cost will go. Hopefully, an update of this book is in work as in my opinion the on-line auctions have driven the price of many of the toys to often double their listed price.
