Book Description
For those who own a cherished but dilapidated fiberglass runabout, or for those who want a boat but are turned off by the high prices and often poor quality of today's offerings, this book explains everything there is to know about turning a rundown runabout into a real showpiece for a fraction of the cost of a new model. Author Jim Anderson, a runabout renovator from Minnesota's Land of Ten Thousand Lakes, leads readers through the whole renovation process.
For those who think a project like this may be more than they can handle, renovating an old runabout is actually less complicated and expensive than adding on a deck or redoing a room--two of the most popular projects for home handymen. And Anderson's sense of humor and gift for providing simple solutions make Runabout Renovation as fun to read as it is easy to understand.
The backyards of North America house literally millions of rundown runabouts ripe for renovation. With Jim Anderson's help, you can own a better boat than you can buy new, for a quarter of the price or less. And like a beautifully restored '57 Chevy, it'll have class.
Low-cost alternatives for the powerboater on a budget.
Although more people own boats ranging in length from 14 to 24 feet than all others combined, most books published about boat repair and restoration are directed at the "big boat" or yacht owner. In addition, many marine dealers and technicians never seem to have the right answers or the time to spend on people who own "little boats." Hence Runabout Renovation, a complete guide to finding and fixing up old fiberglass speedboats.
You'll learn how to:
- Choose and survey a boat
- Make cosmetic repairs and repaint your boat
- Replace the floor
- Reupholster and carpet the interior
- Build a new transom
- Upgrade electrical and mechanical systems
. . . and much more. There's even a section on repairing aluminum boats, and one on installing and repairing horns, lights, bilge pumps, live wells, and other speedboat accessories.
"Considering the tens of thousands of fiberglass powerboats that exist today, one wonders why Jim Anderson's Runabout Renovation is so late in coming. Whether you're shopping for a used or new boat, or trying to maintain the value of a boat you already own, this book will prove indispensable."--Richard Lebowitz, Editor, Boating World
Customer Reviews:
Fix-Up Boat.......2007-01-13
I bought this book for my son-in-law who's renovating a boat for pleasure and fishing. I know NOTHING about boats and don't like to fish, but he was THRILLED with this book, so that's recommendation enough for me!
A little outdated?.......2007-01-09
I found this item helpful, but maybe a little outdated. As a European, a lot of the stuff is a bit the American way. Eg. carpets i boats, which are hardly used i Europe. An option without carpets or vinyl would have been nice.
The lack of presentation on new materials such as vinylcell (eg. Divinycell and other similar products)makes the impression that this book could be updated. But in general, it is very helpful. Nicely written, a joke here and there, and good focus on security, helth hazards and other information.
practical guide.......2006-08-20
I got some very good ideas from this book. It's written for persons with average skills and tools, and is very easy to follow...
Runabout Renovation.......2006-07-20
This book is a great source for the do-it-yourselfer on how to repair it yourself and save money doing it.
Enlightenment.......2005-09-12
I purchased this book with a view to restoring an old (1968) fiberglass boat.
I found it to be extremely informative, and giving a lot of information as to possible sources of materials and specialized help.
This book, has made for me, what had at first sight appeared to be a monumental task, actually quite simple.
I would thoroughly recommend this book to anybody intending to restore or repair any fiberglass vessel old or new

Customer Reviews:
Disappointment.......2005-12-01
This book will not help you start a handyman business. It is all about the authors ramblings concerning his work clothes, tools, hardware and not at all about how to run the business. Anyone interested in running a handyman company will already know the technical side, and really what the author even provides there is useless. The business side is why I bought the book and it is not there.
Serves me right for not reading reviews first!.......2005-01-12
Anyone who is starting a handyman business and doesn't already know the elementary information provided in this book is NOT smart enough to own and operate their own business.
There is a much better book out there geared towards contractors, but the information is much more useful. This book is a waste of money.
Not as advertised!.......2004-08-15
Not very informative for anybody that has any handyman skills to begin with. Would be ok for somebody that has no skills whatsoever. Has nothing to do with "Starting and Running a Successful Business". I might give it to my kids because that is all it is really is good for. Very disappointed!
pipe dream.......2004-06-16
If you think you are going to run a contracting business with no overhead forget it.Go ahead and try and find jobs without advertising.Hmm why without advertising.Because if you try and advertise ,and don't have a contractors license and liability insurance. All those people who do have them and pay thousands a year for the privilege will be turning you in so fast your nail gun will spin.Unless you live in the Boonies ,most Counties and Towns require rafts of paper work and other license, before you can pull a nail in someone's home. The days of Gommer the fixit man are over because we live in such a litigious society, liability insurance is a must and it costs thousands. There is really no way to start a contracting business on the cheap and run it in a professional manner.this seems to be the case with most of these start your own contracting or repair business books out there. They forget about or gloss over the whole liability issue, like it's no big deal. You damage someone's home or property and you will see what a big deal it becomes.I am not a contractor ,I have a small 3 bay auto repair shop , and my liability runs almost 20 thousand a year. That's quite a big bite for a guy just starting out.Even if you stay away from large jobs, say a customer wants you to install a new window ,in most towns that would require a contractors license, check it out well before you just jump in.It takes a lot more then just the tools and the knowledge of how to use them to run a home improvement business.
pretty lame.......2004-03-28
This book I thought was dumbed down to the point of sad. All the info in it was, and should be, known by anyone remotely knowledgable about houses and handyman type work. It seems to have been written for the high school drop-out needing a direction. I would not recommend unless that person was completly clueless.

Customer Reviews:
This author seemed to put very little effort into this book........2006-05-08
I am extremely disappointed in this book. After all the hype (the author proclaimed he was very successful, building 60 homes a year at his peak), this book appears to be written by someone who has never set foot on a building site.
It is virtually all written in generalities, with very little useful or valid information pertaining to contracting. This book really lacks SPECIFICS!! A lot of what the author does is just write "fluff," or "filler." In other words, much of his writing is just wasted space.
I believe that the positive reviews on this book were either written by morons, people who think "fluff" is good writing, or most probably, friends of the author who are trying to increase sales of his book.
It's really a shame, because I have the feeling that the author really does know about the building business. Too bad that he didn't choose to impart any specific knowledge to the people who forked over $25-30 for his book.
The author should be ashamed of this piece of work. It's really a ripoff. If you are a budding young contractor like me,
DO NOT waste your money on this book! Or, your valuable time.
He knows a little about a lot.......2003-12-12
While I am only about 85% of the way through this book let me say that I have found some very informative material. I have also found some VERY VERY wrong information. As a financial advisor turned contractor I am currently in the "Planning for your future" chapter and have found some terrible advice. It leads me to believe that although he was a succesful builder and did well that he doesn't know when to shut-up about things he really has no idea about.
I have enjoyed the book so far but it really is outdated and needs to be revised or pulled off the shelf so that inexperienced builders do not use his "past there prime" ideas in todays market.
If you are in the market for industry books then you can do better. There are books out there that are much more current than this one. Buy a specialty book and stay away from the guys that think they know it all.
Beware.......2003-11-13
Book lacks detail, and content. Book is misleading and is simple over priced toilet paper
Watch Out!.......2003-05-16
If you are new to the building business - this is definitely NOT the book to buy or read. I found the book to be very general speaking on all 26 topics being discussed. E.g. topics on computers - why to use them or not - are completely outdated.
This book lacks a lot of detail. It scans over most items and I really find it difficult to highlight facts that I would re-read later. This book will NOT make me a successful Builder - just a frustrated reader.
Good Stuff.......2001-12-28
Good book. A solid value. This is a very versatile book, as it applies to all types of construction business. Its really about solid business practices(not strictly pertaining to building, although theres plenty about that in here). This book is very business oriented and covers quite a bit in the legal aspect as well. Good book with good templates. Finally i got some decent info on lein waivers. To those who arent computer savvy, chapter 17 is for you.
