Compton's book covers the basics, but barely.......2005-07-21

I bought Compton's book based on an ad in [...], a rather heavy duty marine diesel oriented web site. I already had Nigel Calder's marine diesel book and was somehow expecting more, but got less.

Calder's book is more detailed and thorough. If you have Calder's, then you don't need Compton's. So, my advice is to get Calder's marine diesel book instead.

Wow.........Ok so recently I bought an excavator with some engine trouble,not a sailboat and am and a complete novice at all things related to diesel engines,this book is one of three that I bought , its very easy to understand and the illustrations are fantastic the layout is also very plesant. I read lots of technical books on many different subjects and this book has to be one of the most thought out in terms of explaning a complicated subject to some one with little to no experience,in mantaining an engine. If you had no interest in diesel engines this would still make an excellent coffee table book , as you could read it for a few minutes and learn something or just brouse the lovely pictures. I am thinking of getting a few more copies to give as gifts . thanks

Be Your Own Troubleshooter.......2004-05-11

Mr. Compton says that he'd tried to write a first-aid manual for diesel engines and I'd have to say that's just what he's done in this very user friendly book. The book is full of great, easy to understand illustrations that make it easy for even the raw beginner to get involved with his iron jenny. This is a must have book for any cruising sailor.

Worth waiting for!.......1999-12-10

When you are looking for a simple explanation to a complicated set of directions you usually ask a friend, not in this case, just look at the book. I found Peter Compton's book a very helpful and interesting guide to trouble shooting your way out of a frustrating situation. I am teaching marine engineers and running courses for weekend sailors and would have no hesitation in urging them to buy a copy for their book shelf. The diagrams are first class and I use the book as an example to my students. Well done Peter for giving me the tools to make the job easier.

I love this book. I found the information to be very helpfull, I was able to replace the gas tank on my lawnmower and clean out the engine. This is the first time I have done anything like this, but because of this book I think I can even work on my other small engine equipment. This was a great buy for me.

Check to see if you really need this.......2007-04-27

OK, here's the deal on this book: if you either need to do some repair and heavy maintenance on your B&S (or, as I like to call, BS) engine, or you already have part of it apart and don't know how to get it back together, then this book will be helpful. However, if you have already torn your mower apart, put it back together, but are still having trouble honing in on the problem, I don't think you'll get much out of this book.

I was in the latter position up until, well, today. I had taken the carb off, "rebuilt" it, and readjusted it several times. But I couldn't get my mower running. Turns out the smallest internal part of the carb -- the needle seat -- has to be put in a certain way. This book doesn't go into anywhere near that much detail. This is only one example of which I'm sure there are others, particularly when you start messing around with the head and piston.

You can only learn engine repair and diagnosis through experience with (hopefully) a mentor. Online forums can help be that mentor in many cases. If you have no idea how to get started, then yes, I recommend this book. But if diagnosis and other small issues are your problem, I don't think this book will help.

Very Dissappointed - Only covers 1 type of B&S engine.......2006-11-19

I have two lawn mowers with Briggs and Stratton engines. One purchased in 2000 and the second in Oct 2006. Both have roughly the same 4 HP engine. (This has to be one of B&S more popular B&S lawn mower engines.) This book does not offer any guidance on repair or maintenance instructions for the carburetor that is on my 2 engines. Very generic. I thought it would cover all models

Great repair book just a little dated.......2006-10-19

I got this book in recently and was impressed with the quality of the text and illustrations to guide you through most any part of the engine you were servicing. The book is orgnaized into sections covering each of the area of the engine such as carburetor or electrical. One trick to using the book effectively is finding the sections that are relavent to your engine; some features simply were not on the engine I was servicing.

My only complaint about this book is that the information is a little dated and does not cover some of the newer engine designs Briggs & Stratton has. In my case I was looking for more information about the Pulsa-Jet Carburetor and it is not covered or even mentioned in this book.

Enjoy this book, for the relatively small price it is worth the purchase.

A Lawnmower Saver.......2006-07-05

This book is well organized. I found the cause of my lawnmower problem, then followed the instructions to fix it. It runs like a new machine now. I saved a lot of money and had the satisfaction doing it myself.
