5 out of 5 stars Dream Book.......2006-06-27

This book will set your imagination on fire and motivate you to turn your ordinary backyard into a mini-paradise. Lots of pictures to drool over, you will find yourself thumbing thru it again and again..

4 out of 5 stars Outdoor Rooms.......2004-07-28

This is a great "thumb thur" book. It has really nice pictures of outdoor areas that are very "architectural".... Not helpful for the "average joe" looking for ideas to create your own backyard/outdoor patio/room.

3 out of 5 stars Great for Entertaining Types.......2002-02-28

If you need ideas on how to create outdoor spaces for entertaining - this book is for you. Dining, lounging, dining, lounging... Even different photos of the same patio have different place settings on the tables to give you dining ideas. After a while, I began looking for spaces where you could do something other than dine, or lounge. Overall, nice photos of nice outdoor spaces, but limited appeal.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh ideas, lots of variety, great mixing of materials.......2001-04-17

When looking for fresh ideas and inspiration on how to create the prefect outdoor space you needn't look any further than this book. From a modern symmetrical porch to lush English gardens, it showcases a wide range of styles. With so much to choose from anyone can find something to suit their taste.

Many of the outdoor rooms have pools. It is amazing how they manage to flawlessly integrate the pools into the environment without making them seem out of place or just thrown there. The magnificent outdoor spaces truly become a part of the home.

I love the combination of styles and how they compliment one another. One room features the creamy white walls of Greece, a timber roof and hot Mexican colors in a cushioned seat. Large color photos tell the story with brief descriptions of each example.

In the back there is a sampler of fine furnishing and accessories form a variety of different styles including historical, rustic, Mediterranean/island, and geometric. There is also a helpful directory of design professionals, photographers and product sources.

3 out of 5 stars If you love concrete & steel, this book is for you!.......2001-04-04

Or if you love browsing Swedish furniture catalogues, buy this book! Unfortunately, I'm not a big concrete & steel fan or heavily into Swedish furniture. It's a lovely book but if, like me, you're looking for garden inspiration or expecting visions that incorporate trees and plants, look elsewhere and save your money. The designs for outdoor rooms in this book left me cold. I gave it a reasonably good rating because I realize that readers who love modern architecture will probably enjoy it.

1 out of 5 stars For BIG rooms and budgets only.......2006-06-10

If you are planning to entertain a cast of thousands (or at least a few hundred), own at least ten acres of land, and have unlimited funds (including hefty fees for architects and engineers), then this book offers a few good ideas. Unfortunately, I was looking for something more down to earth, such as ideas for a modest gazebo or shelter that would blend nicely into the back of my modest half acre piece of land - a place for thinking or reading or conversing with a few god friends, a place to escape the rain, or a place for star gazing. This book didn't even come close to my expectations.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mighty $teep Learning Curve.......2006-09-01

"Gazebos and Trellises : Authentic Details for Design and Restoration (Historic Landscape Detail S.) (Hardcover)" is a series of 200 rather small plates of historic structures that garden designers, preservationists and landscape architects may find of marginal use. The author's renderings mainly derived from field and library research of East Coast structures are unemotional, 1-point perspective, flat representations that I find undemonstrative and difficult on the eye.

In the back of the book are three pages listing plants and Vines from: Colonial Times and Republic 1700-1820 - Later Times 1820-1875 - to -Modern. Included in the list is Gloire de Dijon, 1853, - Gardenia, 1899 - and Souvenir de la Malmaison, 1893; among my personal favorites.

The author's rendering style is so dispassionate that his plates of Mount Vernon, Montpelier, and Monticello seem foreign to me.

There is an inadequacy of books on garden trellis and gazebos in general; and a paucity of anything of this genre. Nonetheless, I remain unenthusiastic about the content and cost of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration.......2001-08-08

Peter Joel Harrison provides a valuable service to architects, designers, preservationists, landscapers and homeowners by researching, recording and presenting the details of historic homes and gardens. His books, full of accurate drawings of historic fences, gates, gazebos, trellises, pavement and garden walls, are tools for anyone who's restoring an 18th or 19th century home or landscape and inspiration for anyone who hopes to infuse some of yesterday's charm into a new building. This book presents fascinating garden buildings in all of the styles of America's architectural heritage. If you're looking for a gazebo or pool house to match your period home, this is the book to start with.

I recently purchased two books on gazebos from Amazon. My daughter is getting married in the spring and we plan on building one. This book really is what it says...step by step "how to". It is good. Of the two books I purchased this was the most helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2004-08-16

Received the book not long ago and read it all in one sitting. I've learned alot and I'm looking forward to builing my very own Gazebo. I would definately recommend it to all my friends, well at least those interested in building one. ;)

2 out of 5 stars Title deceiving, Still has merit........2006-07-18

This book is deceiving. It should include on the cover somewhere that you have to send away for the design plans. I did that very thing when building my current home. That worked out well for my husband and I. So there is merit in "buying design plans" but the book should be more up front about what's inside. With that said, there are a variety of unexpected, fun designs.

1 out of 5 stars Assembly instructions are terrible.......2004-04-11

I'm in the middle trying to build the Three Bin Composter in this book. It says the "complete instructions" are in the book for free-- one of the few plans in here that you don't have to order. There is a LOT of missing information, and I think that some of the dimensions listed in the materials section are incorrect. This is pretty simple, so I'll just guess my way through it, but I would NOT use this company if you are looking for plans for something more complictated.

1 out of 5 stars Book of Drawings.......2003-11-11

This book merely showed drawings of things you could buy plans to build. Among the things you can't build with this book is a huge castle. Who on earth would buy a book to build backyard castle? I bought this book expecting several plans for building tool/garden sheds. What I got was some ideas on what a shed could look like. I get more insight every time I look out my kitchen window at my neighbors' sheds. I am not even going to try to resell this book, because I wouldn't do that to anyone.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2002-08-29

I thought this was going to be a great book on designing a play area for the kids, but I was truly disappointed. There are great ideas in this book, but anyone looking for a "build it yourself" guide needs to keep looking as there are no directions to be found; only listings on how to order the "blueprints" of the various items you wanted directions on how to build in the first place.
As I said, this book has some great ideas, just no directions included.

      3 out of 5 stars Nice, but................2002-10-02

I purchased a copy of Sheds, Gazebos & Outbuildings from Amazon this summer with the intent to build a shed as a fall project. While not a journey-level carpenter, I have built decks, added a room and so on. Buying the book seemed a good way to get a basic plan and have guidance on construction tasks unfamiliar to me. The first part of the book gives general start-to-finish construction tips (with good photos) and the second part contains 8 sets of project plans (no photos, only drawings and plans). I read parts of the book in detail, scanned other parts and, with some slight modifications, followed the basic garden shed plans. Right now I'm putting on the roof and am pleased with the overall results. Did the book play an important part? Yes and no. Yes, in that it did give some useful guidance and filled in some information gaps. No, in that lower cost plans are available through resources such as your agricultural extension service or local library. Too, the general building techniques section had photographs of a shed quite similar to the basic shed plans. This caught me when constructing the rafters and I think it might for others who attempt to use the book. The shed rafter design in the general part is not the same as used in the basic garden shed plans. Unless the book is carefully read it is easy to be thrown into a quandary as to which method to follow. Upon reflection, I'm a bit suspicious that there are no photos of completed structures for the 8 projects. I wonder if the plans were ever used to build the 8 structures (only drawings are used to illustrate them for the reader). I wrote the publisher to ask why two different rafter designs were shown. I received a prompt, technically correct, and courteous answer. However, there are any number of ways to construct the different parts of a wood structure and thus it doesn't make much sense to include a design that doesn't seem to directly apply to the plans in the book. The publisher's answer avoided that issue; that made me uncomfortable. I fear that if I tried the some of other plans that I might run into similar problems. In sum, I can't recommend that you buy this nice, but obfuscating book

This book was good for simple, basic overheads for patios and/or decks. It gave some limited plans and recommendations for lumber. It also listed a variety of roofing materials but was somewhat unspecific on the pros and cons of each.
We liked what the book did offer, but finished it feeling rather unsatisfied.
