Book Description
Parish Nursing is a handbook on health promotion and care within faith communities. Sections of the book address the context for parish or congregational nursing; models, roles, and settings for practice; issues for parish nursing practice; the parish nurse's collaboration with other health team and spiritual care professionals; and international perspectives of parish nursing. While the project had its initial roots in the Lutheran General Care System, it has been written so that nurses of all faiths should find it an extremely useful shelf reference or advanced-level text. Parish Nursing will be of interest to scholars, students, and advanced practitioners in community and public health nursing, psychiatric/mental health nursing, and primary care nursing. Originally published as Parish Nursing: The Developing Practice.
Customer Reviews:
The Must Have Text for Every Parish Nurse.......2001-03-24
This updated version of an earlier work on Parish Nursing is a comprehensive and invaluable overview of Parish Nursing as it was, and as it is today. Parish Nursing began as a movement under the encouragement of Granger Westburg and his work in whole person health. It now recognized by the American Nurses Association as a speciality practice within nursing, and has spread throughout the USA and other countries. This book is rich in resources and is required reading for any congregation or institution wanting to learn how to get started in developing a Health Ministry.

Book Description
May we exist like a lotus, / At home in the muddy water. / Thus we bow to life as it is. This verse is an important reminder, says Ezra Bayda, of what the spiritual life is truly about: the willingness to open ourselves to whatever life presentsâno matter how messy or complicated. And through that willingness to be open, we can discover wisdom, compassion, and the genuine life we all want. In At Home in the Muddy Water , Bayda applies this simple Zen teaching to a range of everyday concernsâincluding relationships, trust, sexuality, and moneyâshowing that everything we need to practice is right here before us, and that peace and fulfillment is available to everyone, right here, right now, no matter what their circumstances.
Customer Reviews:
Practical Advice.......2005-09-16
Easy to read, understand, and put into practice. Common sense, practical advice. Similar content as his "Being Zen" book.
Not too abstract, Not too nuanced - Just Right!.......2005-04-04
I was truly inspired and edified by reading this book. Mr. Bayda's insights into the principles of Buddhism are gentle, accessible and practical. These books are informative and I am glad they were recommended to me by a friend. I would also say that while many Buddhism books are either too abstract or too nuanced, this book comfortably falls in the middle providing real insight. I highly recommend it.
Ezra the Great.......2004-11-10
Reviewing a book such as this is no easy feat. Quasi-spiritual, semi-self help books are a dime a dozen, and many of them are terrible. They attempt to reduce common sense to a formula that, once applied to one's individual life circumstances, permanently alters the course of one's life.
Do you know anyone whose life has radically changed as a result of reading a self help book?
I bought this book (along with Being Zen, Ezra Bayda's previous title) because I am interested in Zen Buddhism. I bought them rather randomly, having never heard of Mr. Bayda before (these books did not, however, serve as an introduction to Buddhism for me; I have been interested in the practice for many years). I am extremely impressed, however, by Mr. Bayda's simplicity and practicality; I don't think I've read a more accessible book on Buddhist practice. I would argue, in fact, that he does it better than Pema Chodron (whom he credits as a source of inspiration). Mr. Bayda's books are the result of some fantastic writing and editing.
Mr. Bayda says that these two books are really Parts 1 and 2 of the same work, and I would agree: You should read both of them, so that the important concepts are really hammered home. After all, these books are not intended to be feel-good, airy-fairy words to make one "feel better"; this, in fact, is what I believe to be the "strength" of Buddhism---the fact that its primary goal is not to make one feel better, but rather to point us toward residing in the ordinariness and pain of every day life. Mr. Bayda's effort is directed at pointing us in the direction of an "authentic life," as opposed to the "substitute life" which so many of us are accustomed to living. Mr. Bayda offers sound, succint, and challenging advice on how we can apply the principles of Buddhism to our lives in a practical and compelling way, without ever using exclusively Buddhist terminology. A person of any faith would find this book both accessible and informative.
In the end, I cannot recommend either of his two books highly enough. While reading these two books (or any other books for that matter) have not and will not change my life, taking to heart the teachings really could.
A great tool for anyone willing to use it.......2004-01-27
As with my dad's first book, BEING ZEN, I could read AT HOME IN THE MUDDY WATER countless times and always find it useful. There always seems to be something or someone in life that I want to change. I see repetitive patterns in the way I relate to others and to life. I watch myself react and put up defenses and strategies of control. I think I am clear, with a good analysis of the situation, of myself, and of others. And yet, the same patterns return. The same difficulties and questions come again and again, varying only in the circumstances under which they arise, but not in the base emotions and beliefs themselves. AT HOME IN THE MUDDY WATER helps me to see and experience my difficulties on a deeper level, getting to the very base, the very core of my hurt, my fear, my anger and my pain. This book, like BEING ZEN, helps me to deal with life daily, whether it be with reacting to something as small as being cut off on the freeway to something larger, like depression, self-doubt, and difficulties with relationships. Many times, I must admit, the equanimity my dad speaks of in his books feels out of reach. But I know it is possible to achieve because I have watched him in spiritual practice for over 27 years. My dad still feels pain; he still gets hurt, angry, disappointed and filled with fear. But he relates to all of these things differently than most. His spiritual practice, as so clearly laid out in these books, allows him to experience life in all of its colors and shapes, in happiness or in grief, in peace or in total chaos. The practice is always the same: simply to BE HERE. The tools are out there, but it is up to each of us to put them to use for ourselves. AT HOME IN THE MUDDY WATER is such a tool.
self-help.......2003-09-17
This book is excellent for someone who is practicing without a teacher. I found the discussion of how to deal with a "dry spot" in your practice especially helpful. It's difficult for a solo practioner to step outside the self thing and see what's sabotaging your practice. I am thankful to Mr. Bayda for his ability to articulate so well what's going on.

Product Description
Violent crime is out of control because too many people don't want to think about it, don't prepare for it, and gamble that they won't be one of the 14,000 victims hurt or killed in America every day. Five out of six Americans will be victims of violent crime during their lifetime. Waking The Tiger Within, (136 pages, plus 32 pages of sharp, related illustrations), describes simply with fresh, unapologetic vigor how to become aware, powerful, never a victim--in control on the street, in the car, at work, on trips, at home and at school. Scott Flint, a 6th degree Black Belt, holds the title of Master Instructor, has taught over 3000 students during 29 years, learned from experience exactly what women, men, and children must know to be safe in all environments.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for everyone!.......2003-02-27
Scott Flint is an accomplished martial artist and self defense trainer. In this book he will teach you ways to increase your awareness, methods to develop your instinctual fighting ability and techniques to keep you safe wherever you go.
This is not a book for the faint of heart or weak of stomach. Scott goes right for the jugular, and pulls no punches with the techniques shown. His style is very much ýin your faceý and up close and personal. As he puts it ýyou must become your assailantýs worst nightmare ý if you are to surviveý
As a full time self defense trainer and part time law enforcement officer, I am constantly amazed by recommendations made by well-intentioned people that you should ýgive in ý to the attacker and just do whatever he says. My experience and research has shown that the individuals who are mentally aware, properly trained and are willing to fight back are the survivors. This book clearly shows how to do all three.
The good news is that statistics show that the people that are the most prepared to defend themselves are the most likely not to get attacked. Although most attackers are dumb, they are not stupid. Just as the tiger looks for the weakest animal in the herd, the predator looks for signs of weakness when choosing a victim. Just the mere act of preparing yourself may be enough to keep you safe.
Waking the Tiger Within is easy to follow and understand and should be considered a must-read for anyone interested in defending themselves and their loved ones from violent attacks.
A MUST READ BOOK FOR ALL!.......2002-12-28
Just wanted to let you know that I have read this book and it is great!! It is the best material I have ever encountered that deals with self-defense. It is full of useful tips and ideas to keep you and your loved ones safe. This book should be required reading for everyone. If you are contemplating buying this book, go ahead. You will not be sorry you did. Good job, Scott!
Waking the Tiger Within by Scott Flint: A MUST Read!.......2002-04-01
What a GREAT book! For those like myself and my wife, who have long ago eclipsed Jack Benny's 39 years, and who are also handicapped, staying safe in a violent world is not easy. Martial arts? Try them with Degenerative Joint Disease. We knew there had to be a better, easier way for those of us long past our prime "fighting years". As a volunteer personal safety instructor, I read, watch videos and attend as many seminars and programs as possible, always looking for ways to keep ourselves, and others, safe.
"Waking the Tiger Within" by Scott Flint has to be one of the best sources of staying safe to come along in some time. The book covers not only the number one ingredient of safety, ie awareness, but guides the reader into developing "Your natural built-in instinct to survive". His chapter, "Stop Button" is exactly what we have searched for: ending "an attack in one second." (No gun, pepper spray or Black Belt needed.) Worth the price of the book by itself.
Got kids or grandchildren? Worried about bullies? His chapters on these subjects are excellent.
Road Rage? Car-Jacking? (What would YOU do, if locked in the trunk of your car by an assailant?)
Many of the areas Scott writes about are covered in the seminars I present, but this book opens up a host of new, and surprisingly simple, techniques that almost anyone, at any age, in any state of health, can grasp and use.
Chapter One begins with these words: "No one ever has the right to hurt you." When you have finished reading and following the simple advice presented in these pages, you will be a long way toward the realization of that goal.
Buy this book for yourself and give copies to those you love.
Waking The Tiger Within.......2002-03-29
"What a great book! Just finished the first reading last night. I am an NRA Certified Instructor in the Refuse To Be A Victim(r) Program, and of course many of the things mentioned are included in our seminars. A number of other items brought up will be finding their way into future seminars I'll be conducting. Thanks for a super job."

Book Description
In today's high-stress world, most people look to home as a refuge. Yet frantic schedules and waning energy often turn the dream into a dispiriting nightmare of dirt, clutter, and disorganization. Spiritual Housecleaning shows how the cleanliness and order of each room in a house represents and affects specific aspects of an individual's spiritual health and well-being. Each chapter provides a series of practical exercises to help readers take on the most mundane tasks of cleaning with mindfulness and self-examination.
Customer Reviews:
An unusual book, to say the least..........2006-11-04
I really like the emphasis on how your space and your psyche are connected and how to create a space that nourishes the people that use it. I found a lot of the other stuff off-putting and quite frankly, bizarre. I am not in the last interested in conducting New Age-y "Healing Ceremonies" and how to contact my "Spirit Guide."
Misleading title.......2005-09-18
This is really a book about *emotional* metaphors for cleaning; spirituality is so much bigger than that. There were several aspects of the book that left me feeling like the author doesn't really understand spirituality. For example, the opening material starts by painting a picture of the author resting in her accomplishments on a float in a pool. To me this was an image depicting the opposite of spirituality; the author seems to be enjoying a relaxing, pampering experience that her relative wealth has entitled her to, but it seems devoid of spiritual meaning or depth. That said some of the metaphors (for example, a description of washing the dishes and how that mirrors one's personal life) are useful for developing a focus on a specific housekeeping task and for adding a bit of creativity and reflection to routines.
I often felt that some of the exercises brought me through emotional pain, which would have been entirely welcome to me if I weren't left to hang without any sense of forward momentum or resolution. The irony in this is that the author makes a big point early on about caring for a crying child with an invisible boo-boo, yet she leaves her readers hanging out to dry. This book would probably work well for someone who just wants to add a little bit of creative thought and reflection to housekeeping tasks, but doesn't have major reworkings to do with regard to housekeeping. Related books that are built on a stronger spiritual foundation include: Everyday Sacred by Sue Bender and Being Home by Gunilla Norris.
Zen of Floor Scrubbing.......2005-08-24
Yes, it's yet another book that promises a spiritual component to scrubbing the bathroom floor on hands and knees! The central message of this book is that you will experience personal growth if you dust every now and again. For people who haven't lifted a duster in years, this may be a ground-breaking insight (possibly literally). However, if you already have an essentially clean house, the best you can hope to find here is assurance that you're bursting with emotional health.
Too-too.......2005-07-12
The writer of this book leads readers into, well, a mess. The information and ideas are hard to find, let alone grasp. The writing style wanders around the point versus nailing it. A frustrating book. On the same topic, SACRED SPACE by Denise Linn is a much better book because it gets to the POINT much more quickly and is easier to understand.
Got more than I bargained for.......2004-03-24
I thought this book would give me specific instructions for what to do in each room to get it together, and I'd follow them and my house would be a nicer place to live. Ha! She talks about how each room in your house reflects a part of you...when I got to the end of the book and realized that each and every room in my house needed serious attention, I finally woke up and got myself the serious attention I'd been needing for a long time. At the time that I read this book, about 2 years ago, I kinda didn't like it because my house didn't get any cleaner. But now that I look back at how many changes I've made in myself, and how I can keep track of my emotional and even physical trouble spots by how I'm maintaining my house, I realize that reading this book was immeasurably beneficial. And what's funny is that I really hadn't put it together till I started typing this review.

Book Description
You Were Created To Be Free
When you were a child, nothing held you back. You cried when you felt like crying, screamed when you were angry and laughed when you wanted to laugh. You were vulnerable, dependent and felt no shame about your need. You simply were who you were.
This doesn't last long. As we grow, human expectations and judgment do something to us that God never intended. We become ashamed of who we are and learn that it's wrong to express what we're feeling. But that isn't what God wants for us. He wants us to break free from the bonds that others have placed on us throughout our childhood and adult lives, and find our way back to the freedom we knew as little children.
In Finding Your Way Home, you'll see how you can leave the shame behind and recover the childlike joy that's so elusive - even to committed Christians. It all begins by truly understanding what it means to be a part of God's functional family. Because no matter how "good" or "bad" our families were, it's only in His family that we can find genuine wholeness and the freedom to be who we really are.

Discovering Wholeness.......2003-03-29
I have had this book as part of my library for a number of years and while I have sorted through and disposed of many books due to lack of shelf space, this is one book that will always have a permanent place among favorites. It clearly helped me to understand the need to recognize and find my own identity and to then encourage others in their own process of finding wholeness, learning how to develope healthy and productive relationships in the process. Ken clearly expresses the freedom we can find as we develop a relationship with God through His Spirit as He leads us through our earthly relationships, teaching us what true love really means--freedom to be REAL people. Accepting and encouraging each other through the process of living the life we have, growing and maturing and becoming more genuine in the process.
This book truly "puts us in our place"; How wonderful!.......1999-02-17
Ken Schmidt is a marriage and family counselor in Ventura, California who has written an inspired book about where we fit into the scheme of things. Instead of blaming our parents or blaming society or blaming some other person or factor in our lives, Ken enables the reader to see that God can bring us into a right relationship with the people in our lives as well as Himself if we see Him and ourselves as He designed those relationships to be. I have purchased copies for troubled friends and was hoping to buy another copy from Amazon. I definately recommend it.
