Book Description
Here is a comprehensive overview, written by a practicing master in the field, on shooting interior photography professionally for artistic, technical, and financial success. Solid information is supported by varied interior photography of the quality seen in advertising, coffee table books, and shelter magazines. Clear, instructive lighting setup diagrams are provided for 30 different lighting techniques. This guide focuses on all the techniques needed to achieve success, including lighting, location, props, styling, using both traditional and digital equipment, and adding people, pets, and action to a shot.
Customer Reviews:
Roth rules.......2007-03-24
Mr. Roth, you're an inspiration and your work is nothing less than beautiful. I just started a (very) small side business photograhping homes for realtors and home owners. Your book helped me much with equipment selection, terminology, etc. This book is highly recommended.
I felt well informed.......2007-02-13
The author keeps a tight focus on his subject. Lots of good photos to use as models. A wider range of issues covered than I expected. A pleasant breezy style. My only disappointment was that lighting was not given nearly as much coverage as I wanted. It's almost as if that part of the book's subtitle was dropped in at the last moment in recognition that that's what most readers would be after. I enjoyed the book and expect to keep returning to it for tips.
Some Nice Shots, A Few Good Bits of Advice..........2007-01-01
I was a little disappointed after reading through this book the first time. While the author is an experienced photographer, many of the photographs and rooms he uses as examples, are less than inspiring. No doubt each of us has days when we shoot ordinary looking homes to pay the bills, but that's not really what I paid to learn about in this book.
That's not to say there aren't *some* compelling photographs and useful tips for professionals, but there is more filler than gems. This book doesn't really seem to have an obvious audience. It's not nearly deep enough in a technical sense to get beginners up and running, and it's not advanced enough to be of great help to those who already know photography well, but who want to take things to the next level. One example is that the section with lighting diagrams (which is brief), doesn't even use examples where the diagram matches the neighboring photo. Call me crazy but in order to see the benefit of a specific lighting set up on a specific room, it helps to see the actual photograph of that room afterward, otherwise you're not comparing apples to apples.
Also, it is clear his knowledge of digital technology and Photoshop is lagging behind his knowledge of film photography. Some of the references he makes to "digital quality" are quite simply off the mark in today's context (and the book is only a year old). Unless you're forced into a very dark shooting environment, nicely lit interiors are where professional DSLRs (or digital backs), combined with Photoshop, can yield seemless and beautiful results. I had hoped for some detailed examples and ideas of how to achieve such results, but no such luck.
One final bit that bugged me: the author takes a very commercial approach to shooting interiors, where apparently it's the norm in his world to be able to completely re-arrange furniture in a room, bring in decorations and paintings from the outside, etc etc. In effect, he's describing show-room photography in someone's home, instead of shooting the essence of what the home owner or designer has created. These are two very different things!
See how many luxury realtors or reputable designers are going to let you (or some art director) move their clients' furniture and artwork around all day while you search for "the perfect shot". Not going to happen. In essence, this book should more aptly be entitled "Tips for Shooting Commercial Interiors", where everything is fluid and you can make a room or office into whatever you want it to be. Shots for advertising, essentially.
While it's not a total loss (just seeing some of the photos can give you ideas for your own work, and there is some good advice on using reflectors and such), this book is far from an authoritative reference on the subject of shooting home interiors or interior designers' work. Not unless you know some designers who like to work on-the-fly and photograph it as they go....
FULL OF USABLE KNOWLEDGE.......2006-12-11
This book is so full of knowledge that is not over poluted with hard to understand industry lingo, but a guide that an expert or an amateur can equally understand. The root of the word amateur is to love and with this book it is very easy to do jsut that. I personally love how it ties in all aspects of a shoot and love the synigery styling section where Roth recomends a team aproach to styling.
Not technical enough........2006-11-12
Yes, there are some diagrams, but poorly presented relative to other books on lighting. So the "Lighting" part of the title is misleading. There is plenty of pontification on theory and "what makes a good photo" but not too much on the photo's actual execution. Nothing on long exposure, stops, ratios, etc. So if you want a book on improving your creative eye or how do properly "art direct" the room, this book is for you. Don't get me wrong, the guy does great work. It would have been nice to see how.

Book Description
When planning buildings in which people are to work and live, the efficient use of natural daylight and solar energy is increasingly important. The challenge is to compensate the different lighting requirements in winter and summer. Integrated daylight deflection systems distribute light into the interior of buildings, utilize and store solar energy to save artificial lighting, air-conditioning and heating costs. Extensively researched and impressively illustrated with a large number of computer simulations and photographs of built examples, this volume is more than an introduction to the basic principles, functions, designs and calculation methods of advanced light-guidance technology for architects, lighting designers, building and climate engineers. In particular it provides detailed documentation of the new Retro-Technology systems, explaining the role they can and do play in integrated façade and building design and planning processes.

Book Description
Good lighting can make or break a home in the same way that furnishings and interior decoration can set a style. This magnificent new volume -- with more than 275 full-color photographs and 20 full-color and black-and-white illustrations -- shows readers how to use lighting to maximum effect in every part of the house. From flickering candles to state-of-the-art micro systems, Lighting Style displays a breathtaking range of lighting effects for every room, every mood, and every budget.
Kevin McCloud, a shining new talent in interior design, draws upon his extensive theatrical background as he explains the emotional response you can elicit through different lighting schemes as well as offering practical solutions to problems of task lighting -- from areas to read, cook, and work in to mood lighting for the bedroom and night light for parties, ponds, and gardens. Inexpensive materials and a repertoire of imaginative techniques form the basis of McCloud's decorating philosophy, which celebrates fresh new interpretations of traditional styles and encourages all to create their own distinctive interiors.
The "case studies" -- one for each room in the house -- are double-page photographic spreads that include detailed descriptions of how and why each lighting scheme works, with cross-references to the "Practicalities" section at the back of the book showing readers how to duplicate the desired effect. A photographic glossary of fixtures and fittings, from bulbs and lampshades to wall lights and desk lamps, helps the reader make the best choice from the often bewildering range of products on the market. This section also provides the essential technical know-how, from the fundamentals of wiring to how to brief an electrician.
Informed throughout by both the practical lighting expertise and the imaginative design techniques for which Kevin McCloud is renowned, this innovative book will be a revelation of the real potential of good lighting, and will enable you to realize that potential to stunning effect in your own home.
Customer Reviews:
A worthwhile read and purchase........2000-03-08
The author speaks to lay people such as myself. He illustrates and compares through photographs different effects of lighting upon the same scene, so you not only read, but get the visual idea. Through reading this book, I am able to plan a lighting scheme that works for my environment and have become my own lighting designer!
Beatifull!.......1998-07-16
A really great book. Very charming and great photos.
Innovative, concise & authoritative.......1996-10-13
Most lighting books show you lots of pictures and tell you what was done.
They hardly help clueless DIY's like myself. Kevin's approach to lighting,
however, is systematic and understandable. His ideas and methods are
innovative yet simple. You'll be surprised at how much your room or house can
be transformed with the proper lighting.
Absolute must-get for new or renovating home owners.

Book Description
The Stage Lighting Handbook is well established as the classic practical lighting guide. The book explains the process of designing lighting for all forms of stage production and describes the equipment used. This new edition includes up-to-date information on new equipment and discusses its impact on working methods.
Customer Reviews:
Stage Lighting Book Very Illuminating!.......2007-01-12
This is a fabulous stage lighting book - not TOO basic for experienced lighting people, not too hard for beginners. I particularly like that there are chapters such as "Lighting the Musical" and "Lighting the Play", etc, as different shows have different lighting needs - but it is not always addressed in lighting books. I highly recommend this book for lighting students or people who just need to know more about lighting to have better communicate with their lighting designers.
And the wheel goes round..........2004-06-19
This book does a wonderful job of presenting the reader with a whole bunch of basic concepts and then rpidly builds on them. For any new light designer, or even experienced ones that want to try something new and different, this is the book for you. It really gets the wheels turning and the creative juices flowing.
4 stars.......2000-08-23
This book is a good overview of lighting design and lighting tech. The writing is frank and honest, the information is well-organized. I use it frequesntly as a designer to remind myself of things I might otherwise forget from time to time, or to get new ideas for how to light for this style. It is just an overview, and while it is highly practical, I would hardly call it comprehensive. Chapter titles include: Aims in Lighting, Lighting Instruments, First Steps in Lgihting Design, Color, The Lighting Design Process, Lighting Opera, lighting Thrust Stages, Agenda for a Post-Mortem, Projection and Effects, and Light Education. This book is sort of like a letter from one experienced lighting designer to a fresh-faced lighting designer, unlike many stagecraft books. It does have the UK slant, as another reviewer mentioned, but that shouldn't be a great hindrance. If you have 10 books about lighting design, this should be one of them.
Very Good Lighting Book.......1998-04-20
I read this book to help learn basic lighting design. This book teaches you all you need to know and more. Even though the book has a U.K. slant(only U.K. rigging is disscued) It is very informative
Basic, simple, reference book.......1997-12-04
This book does an extremely good gob of covering the basics of lighting design. It also includes a lot of pretty pictures and diagrams. I think the most useful part of the book is the appendix section, with gel conversion charts, beam and field angle charts, and commonly used photometric data. While not perhaps the most comprehensive lighting book, it does a good job of covering the basics.

Book Description
Forty years ago, the first time anyone thought to consider Picasso's theatrical work as a unified portfolio, Jean Cassou, then the Director of the Musee d'Arte Moderne in Paris, observed that the work occupied "a great place in his career. His whole genius, his entire work, including his still lifes, have a theatrical character." In his early years, Picasso discovered the theater as a source of inspiration and motifs. His subjects frequently came from carnivals and vaudeville, and he reveled in the conventions of commedia dell'arte figures such as the Harlequin and Pierrot. This fascination was not only reflected in the motifs of Picasso's countless paintings and drawings: Beginning in 1917, he began working intensively with Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, creating his now-famous sets and costumes for the troupe. For Picasso, the stage proved to be an extraordinarily fertile ground, and performance the subject of ever more paintings and sculptures. Picasso and the Theatre features over 80 works dating between 1900 and 1930, and taps an elemental passion of this universally revered artist.

Book Description
The art of architectural floodlighting, which first came into existence at the beginning of the 20th century, has seen a worldwide renaissance in recent years. "Architecture of the Night" ia a fascinating, in-depth, and richly illustrated account of the history of architectural illumination in American and European cities.
Customer Reviews:
Architecture of the Night.......2004-04-18
A century of architectural illumination-mostly of skyscrapers and expositions-that blooms in darkness. The development of electrical power preceded the modern movement and was brilliantly exploited in the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the 1889 Paris fair that was centered on the Eiffel Tower. But it enjoyed its heyday in the 1920s and 1930s, most notably in the US and Germany, and Neumann, a professor of architecture at Brown, has chronicled both with equal insight. Many of the period images are breathtaking, and inspiring work is still being done. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)

Book Description
Wood burners, also known as "wigwam burners" due to their conical shape, were once common at sawmills throughout the Pacific Northwest, where they were used to incinerate the enormous excess of sawdust and scraps that was a byproduct of every mill. As a result of the passage of environmental legislation in the 1970s that outlawed their use, these unique structures are quickly vanishing from the American landscape.
Through extraordinary photographs that recall the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, as well as through essays, photographs, drawings, and maps, Wood Burners examines the history and typology of this little-known vernacular architecture. This intriguing study follows the format of our highly successful title Grain Elevators.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book..definitely worth buying........1998-03-24
Daniel Mihalyo has conducted a thoughtful and loving study of wood burners. Anyone who has seen an abandoned wood burner rising hauntingly above the overgrowth will appreciate the variety of gorgeously composed photographs taken of the interior and exterior of the structures. If you have never seen a wood burner, this book takes you on a calm journey through time and space after which you will be both intrigued and satisfied. Eventually, wood burners will disappear; Mihalyo has captured their essence.
