Do you sleep with the light on? Are you in the habit of checking your doors and windows before you go to bed? Maybe even checking under your bed? If you are about to crack open Joe Hill's chilling thriller Heart-Shaped Box, you might want to rethink your nighttime habits--Hill's story about an aging rock star (with a penchant for macabre artifacts) who buys a haunted suit online will scare you silly. But don't take our word for it. We asked bestselling authors (and masters of dark terror tales themselves) Scott Smith, and Harlan Coben to read Heart-Shaped Box and give us their take. Check out their reviews below, and you might want to pick up a nightlight while you're at it. --Daphne Durham

Guest Reviewer: Scott Smith

In 1993, Scott Smith wowed readers with his stunning debut thriller, A Simple Plan. Thirteen years later, he spooked us again with The Ruins, a horror-thriller about four Americans traveling in Mexico who stumble across a nightmare in the jungle.

The set-up for Joe Hill's novel, Heart-Shaped Box, is appealingly simple. Jude Coyne, an aging rock star, buys himself a dead man's suit. He acquires it online, lured by the promise that the dead man's ghost will be included in his purchase. Jude thinks this is a joke, of course. He also assumes the seller is a stranger. We soon discover that he's wrong on both counts, however, and from this point on the story moves with an exhilarating urgency. Jude wants the ghost gone; the ghost wants Jude dead. We watch, chapter-by-chapter, as they battle for survival. "Watch" is the appropriate word, too, because this is an extremely visual book. Hill's prose is lean and precise, and he renders Jude's world with impressive confidence. It feels solid, every detail both correct and fresh. And this physicality provides a firm platform for the book's otherworldly happenings, which seem all the more frightening for being so securely grounded.

Hill has a flawless sense of pacing. His narrative never flags, nor does it ever move so quickly as to outrun itself. And one can sense his literary ambition pushing at the margins of the genre. There are times when his writing, for all its spare efficiency, seems to jump away from him, stopping one small step short of poetry. An e-mail to Jude from the ghost (trust me, it's not as absurd as it sounds) could even pass for something ee cummings might've written, in an especially morbid mood. And toward the end of the book, when Hill describes a trip down death's "night road" in a '65 Mustang, the passage has a startlingly lyrical beauty.

The story's horror ultimately has as much to do with Jude Coyne's past--his mistakes, abandonments and betrayals--as with anything supernatural. Jude has caused a lot of pain over the years, moving through life with a carelessness that verges on the callous. His battle with the ghost brings this behavior into sharp relief, forcing him to reflect upon his own capacity for cruelty. This dawning self-awareness leavens the book's bleakness and gore (and it is delightfully gory in places) with an unexpected sweetness. Despite our initial impression, Jude is gradually revealed--both to himself and the reader--as an essentially decent, even kind man. It's this kindness, this fledgling ability to love and be loved, that will ultimately be of crucial consequence in his death struggle with the ghost. And it's what makes Hill's debut not only well-written and terrifying, but also--as it draws to its close--surprisingly moving. So go ahead, take a chance, and open his Heart-Shaped Box. I think you'll be happy you did. --Scott Smith

Guest Reviewer: Harlan Coben

Harlan Coben is the author of the beloved Myron Bolitar series about a wisecracking sports agent, as well as stunning stand-alone novels like The Innocent and his breakout thriller Tell No One. His new novel The Woods releases on April 17, 2007.

You, dear reader, are obviously somewhat versed in making online purchases, so today, immediately after you click on the yellow "Add to Shopping Cart" on the top right hand corner of this page, why not do an online search and buy something totally unique?

Like, say, a vengeful ghost.

That is what rock-star Judas Coyne does, thinking it will be a laugh, fun for his "sick-o" collection of such things. It seems a random buy, but Judas soon learns that it is anything but. This particular ghost is one Craddock McDermott, step-father to recent suicide victim and boy, is he cranky. He demands revenge for his step-daughter's death, which he blames on Judas's shabby treatment of her.

Or is he after something else?

There are Amazon readers who will give you a better plot summary. Don't read them too closely because Joe Hill provides plenty of fun surprises. Heart-Shaped Box is a true spine-tingler. I don't use that hyphenated word much anymore. We have seen and read it all, haven't we? But right away, in the first chapter, there was a subtle line that made the hairs on the back of my neck go up in a way I haven't experienced since I first discovered great horror as a teenager.

Hill writes with a sure hand. The prose is compelling. Like most memorable tales of horror, this book is more about redemption than scary moments--though Heart-Shaped Box has plenty of scares. They are visceral, shocking and very well done. The characters are flawed and real. The father-son relationship adds texture and surprising poignancy.

So here's the thing. My guess is, you won't find a ghost to buy online, but if you read the Heart-Shaped Box, you will be getting something that will haunt you and startle you and stay with you and yes, visit you in your dreams.

Sleep well, dear reader. --Harlan Coben

Book Description

Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre: a cookbook for cannibals . . . a used hangman's noose . . . a snuff film. An aging death-metal rock god, his taste for the unnatural is as widely known to his legions of fans as the notorious excesses of his youth. But nothing he possesses is as unlikely or as dreadful as his latest discovery, an item for sale on the Internet, a thing so terribly strange, Jude can't help but reach for his wallet.

I will "sell" my stepfather's ghost to the highest bidder. . . .

For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man's suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. He isn't afraid. He has spent a lifetime coping with ghosts—of an abusive father, of the lovers he callously abandoned, of the bandmates he betrayed. What's one more?

But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost, no benign conversation piece. It's the real thing.

And suddenly the suit's previous owner is everywhere: behind the bedroom door . . . seated in Jude's restored vintage Mustang . . . standing outside his window . . . staring out from his widescreen TV. Waiting—with a gleaming razor blade on a chain dangling from one bony hand. . . .

A multiple-award winner for his short fiction, author Joe Hill immediately vaults into the top echelon of dark fantasists with a blood-chilling roller-coaster ride of a novel, a masterwork brimming with relentless thrills and acid terror.

1 out of 5 stars I am not going to make it.......2007-06-28

There is no way I am going to be able to finish this book. I am in about 100 pages and I am struggling; it's painfully dull and just plain "Who cares". The writing style is appalling, the characters are stereotyped and undeveloped, and the plot is formulaic. Scarier than the ghost in the book? All the five star reviews.

5 out of 5 stars A New Master of Horror Fiction.......2007-06-28

I have hade this novel some a little while now, but never got a chance to finish reading it up until recently.

I'd like to think of myself as a somewhat pre-expert at Stephen King novels, seeing as I own...all of them (The same goes for Koontz and the other 600+ books I happen to own, and the 10 or so I just bought on Amazon.com).

I can tell you that there are distinctive writing patters that are hard to duplicate.

Joe Hill's novel was an amazing read; it was better than I thought it would be, to be honest. It had one of those slow starts and then all of a sudden and grabs you by the balls and flails you around a bit.

I was very impressed for his debut. I honestly am anticipating his next novel, which I'm hoping will be coming up shortly.

This novel is a bestseller, and for those of you who do not own it yet, I highly recommend going to get yourself a copy of it... Now! What the hell are you waiting for? Go order it!

It's just that good.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Read It in the Dar,.......2007-06-27

Wow. Joe Hill, makes the ghost of Craddock James McDermontt come to life and follow you down the same winding, creepy road. You won't want to put it down, and some of the images will linger long after the book is done.

It's a great first novel and I can't wait to see what else Mr. Hill has up his sleeve! He's without a doubt his Father's son!

3 out of 5 stars Objective opinion.......2007-06-27

I wonder if Joe will ever wonder if he should have waited to reveal he was the son of a famous author? So many reviews on here mention Stephen King but as an objective opinion I can tell you Joe Hill shines on his own. His writing is very good even if the story wasn't the greatest in my opinion. Not his fault I just think it's tough to write a ghost story that can span over 300 pages. I think they make better short stories but that being said I'm glad I read the book. It had its moments that creeped me out and the characters were interesting and they are what drove the story. I'm impressed with Joe Hill to create a scum bag of a main character that you can't help but like even a little bit. I would recommend book and I look forward to seeing where Joe Hill will take me in his future works.

5 out of 5 stars A Louisiana Gothic Love Story.......2007-06-27

As many other reviewers have stated, I couldn't put it down. It sucks you in from the first paragraph and mesmerizes the reader to the end. Hill's description of dark, overgrown Louisiana 2 lane blacktops that reek of the swamp rising up to meet them was dead on. I could hear the bullfrogs as I read. I did try to visualize Jude's character and came up with James Hetfield on his angriest day. A movie version with Hill penning the screenplay would be a treat.

If Christian men are going to change from a pitiful, wimpy bunch of "really nice guys" to men who are made in the image of God, they must reexamine their preconceptions about who God is and recover their true "wild" hearts, writes bestselling author John Eldredge in Wild at Heart: Discovering a Life of Passion, Freedom, and Adventure. Eldredge throws down the gauntlet--men are bored; they fear risk, they refuse to pay attention to their deepest desires. He challenges Christian men to return to authentic masculinity without resorting to a "macho man" mentality. Men often seek validation in venues such as work, or in the conquest of women, Eldredge observes. He urges men to take time out and come to grips with the "secret longings" of their hearts. Although the book succeeds best in its slant toward a male audience, it also strives to help women understand the implications of authentic masculinity in their relationships with men. Eldredge frames the book around his outdoor experiences and appealing anecdotes about his family, sprinkling the text with touches of humor and overlying everything with heartfelt passion. Even as he mixes eclectic ideas about masculinity from popular movies such as Braveheart with classic words from Oswald Chambers, and lyrics from the Dixie Chicks with stories from the Bible, he points to only one answer for men searching for their true wildness of heart. Writes Eldredge, "The only way to live in this adventure ... with all its danger and unpredictability and immensely high stakes ... is in an ongoing, intimate relationship with God." --Cindy Crosby

Book Description

God designed men to be dangerous, says John Eldredge. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: To be a hero, to be a warrior, to live a life of adventure and risk. Sadly, most men abandon those dreams and desires-aided by a Christianity that feels like nothing more than pressure to be a "nice guy." It is no wonder that many men avoid church, and those who go are often passive and bored to death. In this provocative book, Eldredge gives women a look inside the true heart of a man and gives men permission to be what God designed them to be-dangerous, passionate, alive, and free.

5 out of 5 stars a good book in spite of its flaws.......2007-06-27

This is a good book--even a great one--in spite of its flaws, some of which have been mentioned here.
I will counter the most obvious ones:

+ Type B males are as manly as types As
(This blind spot leads to more flaws like the ones below.)

+ In praising type A manliness, Eldredge comes across as dismissing Mother Teresa

+ He leaves us with the impression that he sanctions violence uncritically

Other than these and a couple of other lesser ones, I still believe that this book is a necessary corrective.
We, the men in this culture, have been domesticated out of noble passions and
thus becoming vulnerable to lesser, trivial and destructive ones.

5 out of 5 stars Both men and women misunderstand men.......2007-06-25

When a man sets out for adventure, whether through hunting, sailing, mountain climbing, dog sledding, or any other traditionally masculine enterprise, the age-old "battle between the sexes" often rears its head. Many women simply don't understand what makes a man tick - and even though men might know what winds their clocks, they often don't know why. The result is that both men and women misunderstand men. Whether you're a man or woman, this book offers insight into why men are the way they are, and assure us all that it's not only good, but necessary.

Eldredge says, "For after years of living in a cage, a lion no longer even believes it is a lion... and a man no longer believes he is a man." The lesson is that men must relearn what it means to be alive and true to their inner selves, including the individual's right relationship to the woman in his life. This book will do some good toward those ends. It will also help the hunter to understand his passion for the hunt and its proper place in his life. It's worth reading, and it's a small price for what it teaches you about yourself.

this book i gave to my daughter to read before givign to her husband to read. it is a great book

4 out of 5 stars One of the few good books for men.......2007-06-22

Most Christian books for men tend to focus on the sensitive side of the male; the caring, compassionate, loving kind. Nothing wrong with that, but we know as men there is something in our souls that long for adventure. That is where "Wild at Heart" shines. You will not be sorry buying this book for yourself, or if you are a wife, buying it for your husband. It has been an "eye opener" for me, to say the least.

Book Description
A pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes.

This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn't happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table.

In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day.

"What Size Is Your Cholesterol?"
An Essay by Arthur Agatston, MD
You may think that the title of this article is a mistake and that I meant to say, "What Number Is Your Cholesterol?" But the fact is that the size of your cholesterol is just as important as the total number. If that surprises you, there is a good chance that much of what you think you know about cholesterol is wrong and that what you don't know about cholesterol could be killing you.

Luckily, there are now tests that can determine the size of your cholesterol and whether it is a problem. And there are steps you can take to do something about it if it is. As I explain in The South Beach Heart Program, the earlier you know where you stand in terms of your risk for heart disease, the greater your chance of preventing a heart attack or stroke in the future.

Before I go into how you can find out the size of your cholesterol, let me give you a little background on cholesterol in general.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2007-06-02

From the author/cardiologist of the popular "South Beach Diet" comes "The South Beach Heart Program" -a book designed to get and keep your heart in shape via a 4 step plan.

Step one is getting on a good diet. It should come to no surprise that the diet plan recommended is the heart healthy South Beach Diet. Step two is the exercise portion and the book recommend walking and strengthening exercises, particularly your core. The rationale here is that you can't keep your heart strong and exercise if your other muscles are weak. Step three is about getting the right tests. In other words, the earlier you get the tests, the better your chances are of preventing a heart attack or stroke. And finally, step four is getting the right medications one might need.

Good for anyone concerned about being heart healthy, I recommend this book for due to its comprehensive discussion of its subject in plain language. Also recommend The Sixty-Second Motivator for readers needing help making healthy lifestyle changes. Good luck!

This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all adults and probably on an exit exam for high school students. I have bought five copies of the book and given four away to friends and family. I will probably buy a few more. This book tells the reader how to analyze the problem, measure it and deal with it.

Book Description

Updated with a new 12 week companion Bible study, Joanna Weaver's popular book shows women how to blend intimacy with Jesus and service for Him.

An invitation for every woman who feels she isn't godly enough...isn't loving enough...isn't doing enough

The life of a woman today isn't really all that different from that of Mary and Martha in the New Testament. Like Mary, you long to sit at the Lord's feet...but the daily demands of a busy world just won't leave you alone. Like Martha, you love Jesus and really want to serve him...yet you struggle with weariness, resentment, and feelings of inadequacy.

Then comes Jesus, right into the midst of your busy Mary/Martha life-and he extends the same invitation he issued long ago to the two sisters of Bethany. Tenderly he invites you to choose "the better part"-a joyful life of "living-room" intimacy with him that flows naturally into "kitchen service" for him.

How can you make that choice? With her fresh approach to the familiar Bible story and its creative, practical strategies, Joanna shows how all of us-Marys and Marthas alike-can draw closer to our Lord, deepening our devotion, strengthening our service, and doing both with less stress and greater joy.

Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver is a wonderful exploration of two prominent women in the bible. I love how Ms. Weaver relates it relative to our lives today. As a Martha type striving to be more like Mary it was totally relatable and relevant. I loved the way Ms.
Weaver revealed her own struggles with Marthalike tendencies.

I recommend this book to any woman who is struggling with the busyness of life and would love to slow down and appreciate like Mary. Wonderful spiritual blessing, Ms. Weaver.

I had so many women recommend this book that I finally gave in and picked up a copy. And I was not disappointed. Using the biblical example of Mary and Martha, as well as her own personal experiences, the author points the reader to balancing the Mary/Martha in each of us in order to achieve a deeper intimacy with God. Now if I can just put all of this practical and thoughtful advice into action... I am SO Martha!

The Heart of Change is the follow-up to John Kotter's enormously popular book Leading Change, in which he outlines a framework for implementing change that sidesteps many of the pitfalls common to organizations looking to turn themselves around. The essence of Kotter's message is this: the reason so many change initiatives fail is that they rely too much on "data gathering, analysis, report writing, and presentations" instead of a more creative approach aimed at grabbing the "feelings that motivate useful action." In The Heart of Change, Kotter, with the help of Dan Cohen, a partner at Deloitte Consulting, shows how his eight-step approach has worked at over 100 organizations. In just about every case, change happened because the players were led to "see" and "feel" the change. In one example, a sales representative underscores a sense of urgency to change a manufacturing process by showing a videotaped interview with an unhappy customer; in another, a purchasing manager makes his point to senior management about corporate waste by displaying on the company's boardroom table the 424 different kinds of gloves that the company had procured through different vendors at vastly different prices. Well written and loaded with real-life examples and practical advice, The Heart of Change towers over other change-management titles. Managers and employees at organizations both big and small will find much to draw from. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

Book Description

John Kotter's international bestseller Leading Change struck a powerful chord with legions of managers everywhere. It acknowledged the cynicism, pain, and fear they faced in implementing large-scale change-but also armed them with an eight-step plan of action for leaping boldly forward in a turbulent world.

Now, Kotter and coauthor Dan S. Cohen delve deeper into the subject of change to get to the heart of how change actually happens. Through compelling, real-life stories from people in the trenches, in all kinds of organizations, the authors attack the fundamental problem that underlies every major transformation: How do you go beyond simply getting your message across to truly changing people's behavior?

Based on interviews within over 100 organizations in the midst of large-scale change, The Heart of Change delivers the simple yet provocative answer to this question, forever altering the way organizations and individuals approach change. While most companies believe change happens by making people think differently, Kotter and Cohen say the key lies in making them feel differently. They introduce a new dynamic-"see-feel-change"-that fuels action by showing people potent reasons for change that spark their emotions.

Organized around the revolutionary eight-step change process introduced in Leading Change, this story-driven book shows how the best change leaders use not just reports or analysis, but gloves, video cameras, airplanes, office design, and other concrete elements to impel people toward positive action. The authors reveal how this appeal to the heart-over the mind-motivates people to overcome even daunting obstacles to change and produce breathtaking results.

For individuals in every walk of life and companies in every stage of change, this compact, no-nonsense book captures the heart-and the how-of successful change.

John P. Kotter, world-renowned expert on leadership at the Harvard Business School, is the author of many books, including the award-winning, best-selling Leading Change. Dan S. Cohen is a Principal with Deloitte Consulting LLC.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Not as useful as "Leading Change" by Kotter.......2007-06-28

Full of anecdotes about how the principles in "Leading Change" were implemented, I found this less helpful than that book in implementing a culture change. None of the scenarios were close enough to our organization to make a meaningful impact on the management team. A good read though, illustrating Kotter's excellent roadmap to change.

5 out of 5 stars Addresses an Often Forgotten Part of Management Studies---People!.......2007-05-07

In this age of data, management is still about people. This book hits that aspect square on the head. It provides a realistic 8 step process for managing change filled with examples that bring the steps to life. The book is primarily written for managers of change, but the concepts can be useful to anyone at any level of an organization that's in a state of change. (And what organizations aren't?) It can be a bit dry at times, but the stories spice it up and make it bearable. Overall excellent content.

5 out of 5 stars Just what we needed!.......2006-07-15

This book hits the "heart" of what many managers miss in planning change initiatives. This helps us remember that change isn't all number and business decisions. It's the people. I was able to immediately apply some of the ideas and resteered a change initiative successfully. Now all of my supervisors are reading and learning.

5 out of 5 stars Fundamentals for helping an organization undergo change successfully.......2006-04-03

This book is the textbook for how an organization can successfully lead with change. I have used the 8-step method with various organizations and successfully 'seen-felt-changed' for the better.

5 out of 5 stars Best Change Management Book I've Read to Date.......2006-02-28

I'm now in a "Change Management" role with my work, and decided to read some texts on the subject to further my understanding of the topic. Of those books that I've read, this one has clearly been the most helpful. Kotter articulates the steps of change in a way that connected with me, and made it real with a number of relevant examples. It's not onerous to read ( <200 pages) but equally isn't "lightweight." While I would never recommend reading only a single book on the topic, I would definitely recommend that this be one of the books you read!

Book Description

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease challenges conventional cardiology by posing a compelling, revolutionary idea-that we can, in fact, abolish the heart disease epidemic in this country by changing our diets. Drawing on the groundbreaking results of his twenty-year nutritional study, Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former surgeon, researcher, and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, convincingly argues that a plant-based, oil-free diet can not only prevent and stop the progression of heart disease, but also reverse its effects.

Furthermore, it can eliminate the need for expensive and invasive surgical interventions, such as bypass and stents, no matter how far the disease has progressed. Dr. Esselstyn began his research with a group of patients who joined his study after traditional medical procedures to treat their advanced heart disease had failed. Within months of following a plant-based, oil-free diet, their angina symptoms eased, their cholesterol levels dropped significantly, and they experienced a marked improvement in blood flow to the heart. Twenty years later, the majority of Dr. Esselstyn's patients continue to follow his program and remain heart-attack proof.

Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease explains the science behind these dramatic results, and offers readers the same simple, nutrition-based plan that has changed the lives of his patients forever. In addition, Dr. Esselstyn provides more than 150 delicious recipes that he and his wife, Ann Crile Esselstyn, have enjoyed for years and used with their patients. Clearly written and backed by irrefutable scientific evidence, startling photos of angiograms, and inspiring personal stories, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease will empower readers to take charge of their heart health. It is a powerful call for a paradigm shift in heart-disease therapy.

I think everyone should take responsibility for their own health, but books like this can give us some guidance.

5 out of 5 stars Caldwell Esselstyn.......2007-06-07

This is the best heart book ever written period. I have about 50 health books. Ornish's book made me think about it, Esselstyn's book made me do it. All other health and heart books are just noise, they will just confuse you. This one is the best in many ways. In many ways the study is more powerful, and the book is more powerful than the Ornish books by far, though I think Ornish is admirable. This book really should be read along with The China Study, as the two authors refer to one another and their work in the two books. The China Study goes more in depth about the science and rational behind what Esselstyn is suggesting. The China Study is also an outstanding book. Congradulations to Mr Esselstyn, he is by far the best thing going at the Cleveland Clinc, this from one of its angioplasty patients. The only addition I would make to his analysis, is once you are able to, you need to add reasonable exercise, it is essential. But I understand his reasons for sort of omitting it. I suggest Mr Esselstyn write a Reversing Heart Disease Part 2, or "Advanced" there I am sure he would suggest strongly about exercise, as seen with himself and his own family. And I am sure he also has a lot to update us on. Great book, a must for anyone with heart disease.

5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2007-05-29

Fantastic book. I put this book right up there with "The China Study", "Eat to Live", and "The Mad Cowboy" in terms of inspiring us to change our way of eating. While I've read many books about diet and disease over the years, I've still learned many things from this book. There's a bunch of eye opening information in this book. My wife and I are taking a proactive preventative approach to our health. From that standpoint, we've felt we learned much from the book in knowing what to do to P R E V E N T heart problems in the first place.....and isn't that the key?

Great book Dr. Esselsytn!

4 out of 5 stars Common sense prevention of heart disease.......2007-05-19

A well-done book for those who have severe disease and for those who would like to prevent heart disease.

5 out of 5 stars The book that changed my life forever.......2007-05-13

This is one of the most enlightening books I have ever read. My sister heard Dr. Esselstyn speak in Louisville,KY BEFORE the book was released and told me about it. My other sister (3 in all) also has the book and we make several of his soups, we buy the foods he recommends and we FEEL great. We do NOT have heart disease in our family, but we like everything he recommends. Everyone could benefit from this book.

LLM has a good story plot but the hero in this book is a Class A Jerk from day one. He proceeds to make life miserable for the heroine.
I did not like this character. However, it is good reading material and
worth the time it took to read it. Get your hankies ready because it is
a tearjerker

The third in the McKettrick men trilogy, McKettrick's Heart was a really wonderful romance for anyone that is a romance buff. Keegan and Molly didn't exactly hit it off in beginning but it was a pretty lively read, good dialogue and very well written. A fast light read.

What a tear jerker! This book is awesome in taking you away from your own world and into another. You really feel for each character. I couldn't put the book down and stayed up all night ON A WORK NIGHT!! I found myself crying so hard at one point and didn't realize it until I felt my pillowcase. It's a must read for anybody who ever thought that they missed out on something in your childhood.

4 out of 5 stars One of Picoult's better books.......2007-05-23

I just finished reading Harvesting the Heart and I was sad to put it down at the end. Picoult does a great job of digging deep in her character's hearts and showing them to be just like us. It's a beautiful story, but a sad one in many ways. The ending was good, though it doesn't wrap everything up like most of her books, but I liked that. It gives room for the reader to imagine what will happen next. Picoult is a wonderful writer and I highly recommend all her books, especially the newest one, Nineteen Minutes.

I also bought this book because of the excelent reviews I read here.
Very hard to follow story, going back and forward.
Did not care about the people.
The story made no sense. period.
I put the book down after reading 130 pages.
I really tried to finish the book.
But it was just a waste of time.
There are much better books to read than this one.
Very disappointing.

In The Sacred Romance, authors Brent Curtis and John Eldredge inspire readers to enter into the greatest romance of all time--one with God. Many Christians have tried to satiate the hunger of their hearts by substituting the love of God with things from this world. Since "our heart is the key to the Christian life," this often leads to spiritual stagnation and unhappiness, while God, the "Great Lover," attempts to lavishly adorn us with His perfect love. Doubting God's goodness coupled with fear of trusting Him blind the believer and prevent him from being wooed by God into a rich relationship. Life can soon become empty, cold, and worthless. Through personal narrative, Curtis and Eldredge take turns convincing the reader not only that God is good, but that recklessly abandoning oneself to Him results in a fulfilling life of abundance and awe. In this portrayal of God's character, the obvious error lies in believing that He could need anything from His creatures, or that He could be "hurt" by their unrequited love. On the whole, however, this is a call to a more passionate relationship with the lover of our souls. A follow-up book, The Journey of Desire, was written by John Eldredge after Brent Curtis's tragic death. --Jill Heatherly

Book Description

The God who saves is also a God who woos His own to a relationship primarily of the heart. As we draw closer to Him, we must choose to let go of other "less-wild lovers," such as perfectionistic driveness and self-indulgence. Eldredge and Curtis identify the lies offered by "false loves" and instruct us on the journey back to the Lover of our souls. In carefully crafted words and images, the authors entice the reader to his or her own journey of the heart, promising, "It is possible to recover the lost life of our heart and with it the intimacy, beauty, and adventure of life with God."

See my review for the study guide because this is a great study to do with a group of people. Eye opening to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Fulfilling.......2007-03-30

This book really spoke to me and opened my heart to a whole new world: that perhaps God really wants to know us deeply and to love us as a lover does. The idea that we are His children, created by Him, and that we are glorious creatures marred by sin, that our hearts are new and good things once we accept Christ, are crazy ideas in the modern church, but these ideas hold up in scripture. This book has really helped me become closer to God, and closer to His true desire for my life: to live a great adventure with Him. I HIGHLY recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Romance.......2007-01-05

I first read the book, which has profoundly and positively affected my spiritual life. In all of my readings on this subject over the years, nothing ever has put the love of God in such a relevant context. I am now re-reading the book and doing the accompaning workbook which I recommend as well. I highly recommend the book especially for those who are interested in developing a or strenghening their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Wildly Profound and Inspirational.......2006-11-20

All of us spend our lives with a desire for something more, either buried deep within our hearts or just below the surface. This book reveals what that something more is and how we both draw close to it and away from it. The authors' insights into the causes of both our joys and our miseries are nothing short of revelation. This is not a "feel good" kind of book. It does not tell us that everything will be all right if we just have faith. It explores the harsh realities of life and the glorious possibilities of our God given destiny of a life in communion with Him.

I found myself moved to the core of my being, both laughing and crying at the same time as the words of this book cut straight to the center of what my life has been missing all along. This book is not a straight-forward outline of premises though. It is a journey with God. If your heart is not open to mystery of that journey, if it is not hungry for that something more, if it does not feel something missing, then it will not be open to the message of this book. I recommend picking it up when you are at a point in your life when you find yourself hurting, lonely, lost or numb and wondering where God is and why He doesn't just make the pain go away.

1 out of 5 stars New revelation, new spirituality.......2006-10-30

First of all, this book mentions "the heart" and strays from the truth of scripture terribly. God's word says the "heart is deceitful above all things and who can know it?" There is nothing good in our hearts, apart from Christ, and whatever "good" there might be in there comes from Him. Scripture tells us that in the last days the church will go into apostasy. This time has come like no other time before. There is a move to to throw out scripture and move past it, ignoring what God has already told us. What we need to know is in scripture--especially those things we need to know about Him and what He requires of us. This move in the church today to "feel" God and go "to a deeper level" is a reawakening of mysticism which does not belong in the body of Christ. The truth and objectives of scripture are not mystical, for a reason. Jesus Christ was and is not a mystic. This movement is called "contemplative spirituality" and it is subtle and dangerous. Sadly, even Eldredge has taken this route. How many more good authors and great men of God are going to forsake the completeness of God's word to turn inward to "self" and think they will find something new? Solomon said, "there is nothing new under the sun." The devil wants us to think we can reinvent and invent "new" outside of God's marvelous confines. We need to stick to scripture and stop reading books like these written by men who want to offer us something more than the Lord commanded us. We are treading on shaky ground, but all we need is His glorious word and to do what He said: "Keep my commandments."

Book Description

I can fix it. I don't need directions. I can figure this out on my own. These thoughts that erupt from a man's bravado, from his deep urge to be a real man. Yet underneath this, there is a louder voice countering, You can't. You're not capable. You're weak. Many men-possibly all men-face two looming questions at some point in their life. What does it mean to be a man, and am I one?

The Way of the Wild Heart reaches out to "unfinished men" trying to understand and live their role as men and fathers. Exploring six biblically based stages, John Eldredge initiates men into a new understanding and ownership of their manhood and equips them to effectively lead their sons to manhood.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unfinished Men.......2007-06-27

This book and workbook is an essential tool for men growing up as sons and fathers of sons. It explains some rights of passage that men require, but few ever receive to become mature men. It talks about how to pass off these rights to your sons one on one, or as a group of men mentoring young men and boys. It helps you look back on your own life and identify those men who mentored you (or maybe didn't) as you grew to maturity. It helps me whose growth through the different stages of life has been stunted or stopped because there wasn't a mentoring male influence. It shows the need and guides men of all ages through satisfying that need from either your father or other male influences in your life. The book points out that even though well meaning, a single mother cannot provide certain key elements that all boys and young men can only receive from other men. The book is very insightful and thought provoking and will help men of all ages. I am 61 and still learning a lot from this book and workbook.

5 out of 5 stars Willing to risk offending in order to stay true to what he believes is God's purpose and design for biblical manhood.......2007-06-06

John Eldredge has made it his mission to assist men in discovering a Christ-honoring, biblical roadmap to living out manhood as designed by God. Eldredge, author of the bestselling WILD AT HEART, now presents a companion title (with an optional workbook) on equipping men and their sons for the challenges of living in a technological, post-modern society. He cautions readers that this book is a map and as such "...is a guide, not a formula. It offers freedom." So saying, Eldredge highly recommends stepping back and reading WILD AT HEART first, as this new text builds upon the precepts offered in the earlier volume.

Eldredge opens this new book with a frustrating account of feeling totally inadequate at fixing his sprinkler system. Even with written instructions and an online video for some measure of guidelines, he confesses that it's not enough. He realizes he needs another guy to help him, and he's "hacked off" because he can't do it himself. Eldredge comments that men frequently face that sudden terror of recognizing that they're being called upon to "play the man" and yet have no idea how to go about it successfully. And, asserts Eldredge, life is constantly pressing the message that there is "no room for error," so a man better get it right. He calls this the "unfinished man syndrome," or the fatherless condition so many men know far too much about. This is why Eldredge hungers to lead other men in the way of "bestowing" masculinity upon their sons before it's too late.

In a six-stage, sometimes overlapping, pilgrimage, Eldredge lays out the masculine journey as he sees it: Boyhood to Cowboy to Warrior to Lover to King to Sage, all within a typical 80-year life span (or thereabouts). According to Eldredge, each stage must have its allotted time for learning appropriate life lessons so that the man grows deep in his foundations; otherwise, the scarring of an underdeveloped soul might result and assert itself when strength is most required.

In his chapter on raising the Cowboy, he expounds upon the strength of adventure, allowing it, encouraging it and experiencing it. Christian men and boys need something "epic" for which to fight, something beyond themselves worth giving their lives for with abandon. Eldredge is all for offering initiation opportunities that mold and invite males into a fellowship of men where commonality, hard work and deep soul sharing can flourish. No matter how differing the circumstances may be, living intentionally is key, writes Eldredge, for much is at stake.

As is true with his other works, brief discussions of worthy films, books, poems and music are referenced as additional sensory life markers. And, as always, Eldredge writes from the heart, shooting straight with his reading audience and willing to risk offending in order to stay true to what he believes is God's purpose and design for biblical manhood.

5 out of 5 stars Heartful Writing for Men and Parents of Boys.......2007-03-30

John Eldredge writes from the depths of his rich spiritual well to speak to the heart of men. Eldredge conveys meaningful insights about the stages he perceives men going through in healthy life transitions. He labels the stages as: "Beloved Son," "Cowboy," "Warrior," "King," and "Sage." These stages seemed right on for men. He writes about each one and follows the theme of the stages throughout the book.

Eldredge's writing appears more mature and refined with each new book he writes, as does his precision in targeting the experiences of men. This book offers myriad insights into the soul of men.

Eldredge continues his fascination with certain movies and books that speak to him about men and relates many tales of adventure in the great outdoors. In both cases, he succeeds in emphasizing the points he is trying to make using these tools and tales.

Some readers may weary of the emphasis on "manly" things like climbing mountains, guns, hunting, fishing, and blowing stuff up. I think Eldredge uses these to make good points but also has come to an understanding that not all men share these passions.

God has blessed Eldredge with a quiver of sons, and he shares his experiences with fatherhood. The lessons learned from him in this book make it valuable reading for parents of boys. I recommend it to mothers of boys because it will share with you ways to help your son be all the things God has designed him to become.

5 out of 5 stars Wild at Heart II.......2007-03-27

Having read the first half of the book, I was starting to think it was more of an in-depth work book of 'Wild at Heart'. But then I started learning new things that made the whole book worth while reading.

It only takes one paragraph from a book like this to help a man bring parts of his life into perspective that he has been struggling with. 'Wild at Heart' did this for me and now 'The Way of the Wild Heart' has also enlightened me on certain subjects that I was not getting answers on from elsewhere.

Thank-you John Eldredge for stepping out and publishing a very personal book like this. I know your books have touched many a man's heart, and have also shown them what it takes to raise their son's to become men of God.

I would urge you to overlook the negative reviews of this book. I really don't think the negative reviewers understand what the author is trying to get across. This book is not the definite guide book to being a man, nor does the author want you to feel that way. Even though he heavily explores an important aspect of being a man, he does not leave out the other ones. In fact he does a good job of covering all the different aspects that the negative reviewers are saying he rejects!

The readers are not only shown how to implement what is shown in this book into their lives, but into their sons lives.

I would encourage all men, religious or non-religious, fathers or not, to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great followed up to Wild at Heart.......2007-03-09

My husband loves this book and shares some of the insights with me almost daily. Not everything may be relevant to every man, but every man will get something relevant out of the book. John Eldredge desires to help men know themselves better and live life the way they were designed to live it. He is a Christian, but any man will benefit from reading "Wild at Heart" and "The Way of the Wild Heart".
