Mistress Mary is quite contrary until she helps her garden grow. Along the way, she manages to cure her sickly cousin Colin, who is every bit as imperious as she. These two are sullen little peas in a pod, closed up in a gloomy old manor on the Yorkshire moors of England, until a locked-up garden captures their imaginations and puts the blush of a wild rose in their cheeks; "It was the sweetest, most mysterious-looking place any one could imagine. The high walls which shut it in were covered with the leafless stems of roses which were so thick, that they matted together.... 'No wonder it is still,' Mary whispered. 'I am the first person who has spoken here for ten years.'" As new life sprouts from the earth, Mary and Colin's sour natures begin to sweeten. For anyone who has ever felt afraid to live and love, The Secret Garden's portrayal of reawakening spirits will thrill and rejuvenate. Frances Hodgson Burnett creates characters so strong and distinct, young readers continue to identify with them even 85 years after they were conceived. (Ages 9 to 12)

This book was my favorite book when I was growing up! I still dream about finding secret gardens. Wonderful tale tor children of all ages.

4 out of 5 stars A classic.......2007-06-14

The story of The Secret Garden begins with the tragedy of a young girl losing everything familiar to her including her closest human connections. Throughout the continuation of her tale, we see an evolution of her persona and her ability to grow and change. She is befriended by three very special characters. One demonstrates healthy adult-child affection, one helps her recognize her own strengths of will and the ability to care for another, and one teaches her about the love of nature. Any adult interested in the strengths perspective and any child looking for a story of hope during adversity will value this book.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic!.......2007-04-15

What a breath of fresh air in this day and age. I could not put this wonderful book down.

It started out with a child that just hated the world and everyone in it. She was basically kept by nannies and never saw her parents. When cholera hit the town, she was left alone and found a few days later to everyone's shock. She was sent to live with an uncle in England.

Sent to live with people and a world that was different from her life in India, Mary at first struggled. She was a yellow, sallow looking 10 year old. She couldn't dress herself and was looking to demand and be pampered. However, she explored the grounds and quickly discovered a love of birds and nature. The robin, leading her to the forbidden garden gate and key, she quickly had a secret. Letting another little boy and eventually another spoiled boy in on the secret, she quickly blossomed in her new environment, helping not only herself but others.

What a shame there aren't more of these kinds of books. My girls and I read this book together and loved talking about it and what happened and why. This one will go in my library to be treasured and shared for years to come.
